Havenwood Falls High #4

Somewhere Within

Rate this book
Welcome to Havenwood Falls, a small town in the majestic mountains of Colorado. A town where legacies began centuries ago, bloodlines run deep, and dark secrets abound. A town where nobody is what you think, where truths pose as lies, and where myths blend with reality. A place where everyone has a story. Including the high schoolers. This is only but one…

With her raven-black hair, porcelain-white skin, and shy demeanor, Zoey Mills has been the target of bullies since childhood, no matter how many times her family moved. She expects nothing to change when they relocate to Havenwood Falls, her parents’ hometown. What she doesn’t expect is to discover that she inherited her eccentricities—as the next generation of a long line of frost dragons.

As she learns to accept she’s on the cusp of becoming a shifter, she finds out her new best friend isn’t human, either. But the boy Zoey’s fallen for is, earning the disapproval of her grandfather and patriarch and fueling the fire of a decades-long feud among her extended family. Elitism and prejudice take on whole new meanings.

While she wants to trust her instincts and follow her heart, Zoey discovers that hiding who she really is and playing by the rules would make life a lot simpler. But simple doesn’t mean easy. She must find her strength somewhere within and embrace her destiny—or risk losing everyone she cares about. And all of this on the eve of her Sweet Sixteen.

This is a Young Adult paranormal romance in the Havenwood Falls High series of Young Adult fantasy stories featuring a variety of supernatural creatures. The series is a collaborative effort by multiple authors. Each book is generally a stand-alone, so you can read them in any order, although some authors will be writing sequels to their own stories. Please be aware when you choose your next read.

I always thought if I were a supernatural being I would be a vampire, fae or gargoyle. Not anymore. I want to be a dragon shifter!

Amy Hale hit it out of the ball park with Somewhere Within. Frost dragons are uniquely awesome! When Zoey learns she is a dragon shifter and shifts for the first time, I wanted to be her. Zoey starts out on the shy side. With the help of her dragon, she finds her voice. That's just one of several things I loved. How Amy Hale's characters handled bullying. They stood up for others being bullied. They said "STOP" when someone wasn't able to. Thank you, Amy Hale.
The mystery around the Mills family kept me captivated. I want to learn more about Grandpa Mills, Zoey's dad and Aunt Jetta. I hope Amy writes another novella or two in the Havenwood Falls and Havenwood Fall High series.

If you're a fan of Havenwood Falls/Havenwood Falls High or just beginning to discover it, I recommend Somewhere Within. Read how cool frost dragons are. Bad pun intended. 🤓

I received this book to give an honest review.

Ever since I read my first Havenwood Falls book I have fallen in love with this little town of supernatural. I love how each new novella is by a different author so it is someone different bringing something to this town with their own supernatural being. In this novella we are introduced to Zoey who has moved a lot throughout her life. So when she gets moved to Havenwood she isn't too happy but what can she do. She isn't even there a full day when the unthinkable happens. She learns that she is a shifter kind of crazy right. But the kind of shifter she is, is even way COOLER!!! I mean this has to be one of the coolest shifters in Havenwood that I have read about.
Now while dealing with this new secret that she has from her family, she is also dealing with bullying from school girls and the fact that her grandfather doesn't believe humans and their kind should mix. It makes for a great bit of action and we see how Zoey has grown within a few short days to having more confidence and speaking her mind.
I really enjoy how there is just enough drama, action, and a bit of boy/girl crushes to where it makes the book enjoyable. I plan on reading more of this series because I am interested in this town and what lies there!

This Havenwood Falls High novella kept me entertained from start to finish. Zoe’s family have moved numerous times, but this last move to Havenwood Falls holds lots of surprises for the soon to be 16 year old. A grumpy grandpa and cool Aunt she knew nothing of, a shocking family secret, a new school, love interests and changes within herself that she has difficulty comprehending, are just some of the challenges that await Zoe. This is an enjoyable, well rounded story whose ending leaves no threads untied. It is a quick, easy and very appealing tale that adds even more depth to the town of Havenwood Falls. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion or review.

Somewhere Within is a novella in the Havenwood Falls High young adult supernatural fantasy series. This one features a teenage girl named Zoey, who is a member of a family of ice dragon shifters. She has spent her time moving around the country with her parents who finally settle in the town of Havenwood Falls. The beginning of the story is about Zoey being the new girl in town - fitting in to her new school, making new friends, discovering boys, and meeting new family to include her standoffish, stuck up grandfather. In the midst of all this, she finds out she's half human/half ice dragon, which explains some of the physical changes she's been experiencing as she approaches her sixteenth birthday. Throw in a complicated relationship with a human that gets even more complicated when another non-human gets thrown in the mix, and Zoey's life is enough to make any teenager lose it. Needless to say, she gets through it with a few scars. It was a good young adult supernatural story. I found parts of the book to be somewhat predictable. I also really wanted more backstory about the history of the dragons. This was the first time I had read a story about this kind of supernatural creature and I did enjoy it. Those who have read and enjoyed the Havenwood Falls or Havenwood Falls High books will appreciate this one.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Red Coat PR!

I really liked this book a lot. It was a story about a girl coming to grips with being a dragon-shifter as well as coming of age. Just before her 16th birthday she finds out she's a frost dragon. New to Havenwood Falls she already feels like an outcast as the new girl, but then even before school starts she gets burned and suddenly has a scale on her hand instead of a scab or blister. Her parents explain that her father is a dragon shifter and her mother is human so they never told her because they weren't sure she would carry the gene. Confusing emotions and a changes similar to puberty along with a mean girl make for an eventful tale that turns out very heartwarming.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. I look forward to reading more from this author who has a good writing style that captivates and moves along at a steady pace. Characters were fleshed out and I found I cared about them.

Somewhere Within by Amy Hale was the first story that I have read in regards to dragons and I enjoyed it. We are introduced to the main character Zoey, who we learn is very close to her 16th birthday. Zoey has loyal parents who seem to care about her very much and we learn they have traveled to Havenwood Falls due to her grandfathers request. Once they arrive, something happens to Zoey and we learn that she comes from a long line of shifter dragons.

Zoey is confronted with difficult relationships with her grandfather, the school bully and a sassy vampire; however, she has a lot of loyal friendships in her friend Miranda and love interest Jordan. She also has unwavering support from her parents and Aunt Jetta in the process of learning who she really is.

I enjoyed this story. It was an easy read and I enjoyed the characters. I like that Zoey was able to stand up for herself and eventually to her grandfather. This is another great addition to Havenwood Falls!

Another hit for Havenwood Falls!!!

Somewhere Within is a Novella by Amy Hale. I have to admit that I wasn't sure about several authors writing with a cohesive vision of a complex and diverse setting like this series, but I'm blown away with each installment. Each novella is stand alone and builds one every other story and characters. With each novella, I can't wait to read more and find out more of the hidden secrets that are so a part of this world. This Novella explores the ins and outs of Zoey Mills' chaotic teenage life. After moving often without much notice, they finally end up in Havenwood Falls, her parent's hometown. It doesn't help that they never mentioned the extended family that she meets or the fact that she's a dragon!!! All of this just before she turns 16, talk about drama!!!! I absolutely loved this installment and can't wait to read more.

Each book in this series brings us new and interesting characters. Zoey has moved around a LOT in her short 15 years.. Approaching her 16 th birthday we find her unpacking again. Zoey tries to be optimistic but fears this new town will be like all the others and being different from everyone else has only made making friends hard for her. Zoey learns just how different she is right before her birthday and surprisingly enough a new friend. I can't go into to much of the story without giving things away but I was pleasantly surprised with her story. I did feel that things moved a little fast towards the end but the story played out just fine even so. I like that this one incorporates another character that we find in Havenwood falls and we get a little more history on the town. Great read, interesting characters- you won't be disappointed.

I love these stories and this little supernatural town.
This story is about ordinary Zoey and how the extraordinary happened on her 16th birthday. Zoey grew up knowing nothing about her family history and moving around a lot with her parents. As she approached her 16th birthday and moved back to her family home in Havenwood Falls, Zoey learns that she isn’t as ordinary as she thought. With the help of her friends Jordon and Miranda, along with her Aunt Jetta, Zoey discovers the strength in herself to do what is right and how her life will change for the better being a beautiful Dragon Shifter.
This story was very entertaining and fast read. Can’t wait for the next authors set of characters.

Zoey was a great teenage character. The new kid in school and feeling a bit like an outcast is something I could completely relate to. Being uprooted and moving is rough for anyone, but moving AND finding out that you're not exactly human? That would be super stressful.

To add to Zoey's difficulties, the older generations of her Ice Dragon family are a bit snobbish and don't think humans are good enough for their grand-daughter (even if she is only half-dragon).

I really admired the fight that Zoey found within her self and the courage it took to stand up to her family and their traditions. I don't think her battle is over yet, but she may have won some allies to her side of the field by the end.

Why oh why aren’t there more stars to give? When I heard the word dragons, I knew that I was going to love this book! See, I’m a huge lover of dragons. I even have at least 7 tattooed on my body!! If I could find a pic of these dragons, they would go on my body as well. The book was amazing! There was an underlying tension that was flowing throughout the whole book. You could feel it as you read it. Then once you got to the end, you let go of the breath that you were holding in! This is the first book that I have read by Amy, but I can tell you that it isn’t going to be the last! I need to go look at her other books now!!

Beautifully Written

Everyone of these stories just seem to be getting better and better and this one is no exception. I love it when I read a book and my emotions get pulled in so much it is like I am right there experiencing what the characters are experiencing.

This story had me laughing and crying all the way thru it. It also had me angry at times because of some of the scenes that were introduced because they brought feelings home. This story will teach one valuable lesson, that no matter what other people say or do you can overcome anything you just have to believe in yourself.

Until Next Time.... Tabi

I love this book, it’s about self discovery and taking the high road when you totally could take matters into your own hands. Zoey who has always been an object of bullying moves to Havenwood Falls with her family, just before her 1th birthday. She takes a journey within herself with self discovery and a secret that is about to be manifested. This story deals with several social issues which I won’t go into for fear of spoilers, it’s a great magical journey and I highly recommend this book and all the Havenwood Falls books, it won’t disappoint!

I got an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Being an adult I was so skeptical about Havenwood High but I've found these books to be so endearing. Zoey is a girl learning about herself with so much inner strength and wisdom. It's beautiful to see that a 16 year old is written in such a complex yet simple way. I love to see her get strength from her family, her friends and trust her instincts even with a stupid decision here or there which is something normal as her age as well. Highly recommend.

What a great surprise this little gem was! This was my first introduction to Havenwood Falls and I am a total fan.

As the main character approaches her 16th birthday, she finds out she is a shifter; part human, part frost dragon. She must also deal with her family moving, starting a new school and bullies.

Even though this is a novella, it contains some powerful and valuable lessons for us all. For those who love a good paranormal story, don't miss this one. I will definitely be visiting Havenwood Falls again.

Received an ARC for an honest review.

Another great Havenwood High read! I really liked reading Zoey's story - to the point that I wished it was longer than your typical novella. I wanted to know more about her parents and the whole family and her friendships at the school. The descriptions that Hale included about Zoey's own particular type of "supe" were amazingly.

My only complaint is that it was too short. I really would have loved more scenes with Jetta and more with the town of Havenwood Falls.

Novellas are a tricky thing. You either get extra information on characters already established. Or you're left feeling like you missed the bigger picture.

I have been a fan of Amy Hale work for while. While I would of loved more stage time for theses characters, I think she did an amazing job of getting this non teenager to relate to a dragon. I can't wait to see what else comes from Amy's imagation.

Somewhere Within

As part of Kristie Cooks Review Crew I was pleased to be able to read an advance copy of Somewhere Within on pre-release.

This novella comes under the Havenwood Falls High set of titles. Zoe Mills has moved many, many times in her 15, soon to be 16 years, but her latest move to Havenwood Falls is set to be the most revealing move yet. On top of yet another move, a fiercely traditional grandfather she’s never met before, a new aunt, new school friends, new school bullies and a new potential boyfriend with his own set of issues Zoe has to contend with an unexpected change that comes from somewhere within.

As with other novellas that fall within the Havenwood Falls High series the intended target audience is younger than I am, but that hasn’t stopped me throughly enjoying Amy Hale’s contribution to the series.

Love love love! I didn't feel like I have unanswered questions, it felt complete and whole. This story is well written with characters I can't get enough of. I would love to see more of these characters and Aunt Jetta was so fun! I wish I had an Aunt like her! I can't wait to read more in this series. I did receive this ARC for an honest review.

This was the first book I read in the collection and it wasn’t bad. It lacked the depth that a full novel would’ve shown. I would’ve liked to see more of a relationship between the characters it just wasn’t believable for me.
I did like the different species of paranormals and can’t wait to uncover more about the town and the people who inhabit it.
I voluntarily reviewed an arc from the author.

I could empathise with Zoey from page one, the loneliness of having to constantly move, the feeling you don’t belong. Zoey soon discovered her family’s secrets and how it will shape her life moving forward. Her instincts warn her that something is not right but will she manage to choose the right boy.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Novella it is packed with emotion has some great well rounded characters.

This is such a special story. I can relate on the introvert level. But it also touched on the bullying that has gotten so bad here in the world lately. In away the main character doesnt exactly run away from the bullying and stands up in a polite way. She also meets her granddad and learns about who she is in the supernatural way. She embraces that side of her to the fullest!

I absolutely loved this book and personally I think it's the best one I've read so far in the Havenwood series.
I have read books before about shifters but never dragon shifters and I can honestly say it was a lovely change and I look forward to reading more about Zoeys story if there is another book to follow on hopefully in the future.

This was a great, quick read with great character development. Even though it was short there was enough information provided to make it be a successful standalone story.

My only complaint is it went by too quickly and it would’ve been nice to have a full length novel instead.

I look forward to reading more in the series.

Zoey quickly became one of my favorite supernaturals. Her story and family history is unlike anything I’ve ever dreamt of. I loved the dynamics of her friendships and family. I hope in future novellas we get to see more of them!
