Preston McQuinn wil rust - om te werken en om alleen te zijn met zijn sombere herinneringen. Zijn altijd even vrolijke buurvrouw Cybil Campbell is echter niet van plan hem die rust te gunnen!
Nora Roberts is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 200 novels, including Hideaway, Under Currents, Come Sundown, The Awakening, Legacy, and coming in November 2021 -- The Becoming -- the second book in The Dragon Heart Legacy. She is also the author of the futuristic suspense In Death series written under the pen name J.D. Robb. There are more than 500 million copies of her books in print.
Cybil Campbell is the youngest of Grant and Genviéve’s three children and has followed her father’s path. She’s the artist behind a comic strip but she’s a much lighter spirit than Grant, exuding cheer and sunshine, always seeing the best in people. That includes her new sullen neighbor, Preston McQuinn who guards his privacy with vigor, giving up only his last name. Cybil believes he’s a struggling musician and makes it her mission to help him and put some cracks into his cynicism. He’s actually a renowned Broadway playwright only using the NY apartment (loaned to him by…Daniel MacGregor) until construction in his Connecticut home is complete.
I simply adored Cybil, one of the most delightful characters I’ve read in some time. Her sunny disposition is in her DNA, created from parents who raised her in love, possibility and an idyllic locale. Her comic strip character was a bit like her and included the host of people who became a part of her life because of her own doing. Her apartment was open to friends and neighbors, free to drop in anytime because the chaos inspired her. Preston couldn’t be more opposite and his attempts to keep her at a distance proved futile after awhile. They couldn’t be more opposite, which really works for them, despite Preston’s moments of insensitivity.
This was a wonderful story to end the series, representing our last relationship created through Daniel’s meddling. Though Cybil technically isn’t his granddaughter, she was raised as if she was. I loved his craftiness and the community of family he created. Cybil was a high note to end on, even though there were times I wanted her to walk away from Preston. But he even won me over in the end and their relationship became special. Despite the rocky start of the series, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the books in the last half with this one being my most favorite.
I discovered Nora Roberts' books my freshman year in college. Rather, my college roommate forced them on me and I devoured almost her entire catalog and still continue to do so. To this day, we have really great conversations that go something like this:
F: Oh! She is a MacGregor. Her mom was the woman with the broken-down car that married... M: The recluse cartoonist in Maine! Right! But what about that piano one? F: The piano player with the red-headed Stanislaski daughter? M: Oh right, that's Waiting for Nick. Weren't the across the hall neighbors as well? I think I want to read the second Dream Trilogy book. The one about Kate... F:...how the hell do you remember their names? I always get Honest Illusions, Hidden Secrets, Private Scandals, and Sweet Revenge mixed up. There was one about a talk show, the jewelry heist, the magicians in New Orleans...oh! and the one where...
Anyway, my point is that Nora Roberts has a lot of die-hard fans, both of us included. We can have discussions for eons about all the plots and characters of her books but is that why any of us come back to them over and over? Well, kind of. But mostly it is because of the feeling they give you. If you are in the mood to read a HEA book, Nora is a great go-to. Once you read enough of them, the plotlines seem formulaic--even the murder mysteries--but I will keep coming back for more. They are somewhat like reading an ice cream sundae but they have more meat to them (in terms of witty dialogue, humor, and that NR can actually weave a good story). Now I am thinking about a meaty ice cream sundae. Gross. Talk about a mixed metaphor.
So you don't have to work on that mental image alone...
I remembered particularly enjoying this book on prior read-throughs but I never reviewed most of the Noras I've read. (nor has anyone, as this book seems to have mostly one-liner reviews) So, perhaps a quick plot reminder is in order for people like me that read bazillions of NR books and need to remember which one this is:
Cybil Campbell is the daughter of Genvieve Grandeau and Grant Campbell, the artist and cartoonist who fell in love in The MacGregors: Alan & Grant. They are related to the MacGregor clan indirectly through Grant's sister Shelby, who marries Alan MacGregor (the politician son of THE MacGregor) in the same book. Whew, what a mouthful. In typical MacGregor fashion, THE MacGregor has dropped Preston McQuinn, a Pulitzer winning playwright and author across the hall in the same apartment building. Enter the brooding-reserved-once-burned-by-a-woman-now-scared-of-commitment man vs. the bubbly-super-friendly-always-thinking-of-others-before-herself woman romance storyline. SPOILER ALERT! They fall in love.
It wasn't as great as I remembered it being but not too many books are as amazing one the second or third time through. (don't draw and quarter me! I know lots of classics are rereadable!) We just had a discussion at book club about books that are a different experience each time you reread them due to changed life circumstances for the reader. Maybe that's what happened to me here. The female in this story is 24, super successful, and completely self-sufficient. Maybe I just feel a little embarrassed to say that she seemed to have it more together than I do at the moment so yeah, I think that tainted my read a little bit. I need to find a Nora book that has someone just a bit older in it for my #2 pick. (which is pretty much all of them)
This was a great pick to start off my 'Nothing But Nora' week with Vinaya and Maureen. I think we should make this a yearly thing!
This was just okay for me. The style was more "chick lit" than "romance.” The trope of a girl pursuing a guy has also never been my favorite. When she offers him a hundred dollars to take her out on a "pretend date," I did not find it cute. Like, at all.
The finale of the MacGregor series is the story of Preston and Cybil. Cybil is a Campbell and a honorary MacGregor. She writes comic strips as a profession and lives her life to the fullest. When a broody new neighbor Preston moves from across her hall whom she believes is penniless, she doesn't know he's a famous playwrighter and also has been given the house by Daniel. As Preston is initially irritated, then amused and subsequently turned on by Cybil, she is in love with him very quick. They give in to the attraction, he fights the feeling, some angst and then HEA. To be honest, I adored Cybil. Such a fun, pure hearted soul who spread cheer everywhere, loved openly and forgave easily. Preston was a douchebag many times, fighting his feelings and hurting the sweet Cybil- and he didn't grovel enough- and that's why this book is not a perfect five star. He does achieve mild redemption in the end, but I wish he was kinder. Overall I will miss the McGregor clan. It was one of the best series I have ever read- with so many memorable books- The cherry on top being Daniel and Anna. So much love to them, his shenanigans, and his desire for bairns. Safe 3.75/5
I remain bitter that this is the last MacGregor book, but it's a heck of a way to go out. I feel like it shouldn't work; Preston is really basically unforgivably cruel to Cybil at moments, but somehow it does despite everything.
And I like to imagine her tv show is basically Caroline in the City, and that makes me happy.
The MacGregor Serisinden bir hikaye daha. Daniel MacGregor sen inanılmaz bir adamsın. Her şeyi ayarlayıp gerisini doğa kanuna bırakıyorsun.
So, I think Nora is nothing special but I like to read her books from time to time when I want to chill for a while, for example when it's exam season. You can chew this book in one day, laugh at it and feel that type of love only books can give you (and hope something like that will happen to you, even if it rarely does😂). I find characters quite interesting and I can only imagine how hot that neighbour actually is!!! 🤤🤤
I don't know why I don't read more Roberts. She never disappoints. I'm not in a reading slump at the moment, but I've got to mentally bookmark her for the next time I find myself stuck.
This was cute! Like I said, solid. I think this is one of the perfect example of what a high three star read is like. Nothing groundbreaking, but the plot and premise are really good. I would've liked more about the comic strip writing. And I think Cybil forgives MMC (forgot his name, yall) for too much and too often. But this was so grounded and sweet that I didn't come out feeling irritated.
4.75 stars. Here's what happens and my reactions in a nutshell: She gets hurt by his omission of the truth and it just pulls at my heartstrings the way I love so much. Then he pretends he doesn't mind and that it's for the best. As if! Things get back to normal between them but then he messes up again and my heart goes noooo. And finally, FINALLY, he realizes he can't live without her... BUT he screws it up AGAIN!!! My poor, poor heart stopped beating for several pages then, until he professed his love and they lived happily ever after. This is exactly the type of stories I like.
The main character was just too much. Very self centered and always the victim. I didn't like that. I hated that Preston always ended up groveling when he wasn't the bad guy. Cybill over stayed, created situations, then didn't like the outcome. I love the McGregor Series... This one, probably the least.
amazing what audiobooks can do. I listened to the whole thing over again (I was halfway through the paperback) just today! Love how Cybil’s story reflects her mother’s with the reclusive hero living in close quarters. also very happy to see The MacGregor still alive and kicking—I firmly believe he is still alive today meddling with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and no one can convince me otherwise.
The Perfect Neighbor are opposites attract, grumpy x sunshine. Preston has been burned in the past and he is cynical. Cybil is a comic strip artist and is happy and helpful. They butted heads only because he was a little bit stubborn. I liked the romance, the characters, and plot.
This is a quick read. McQuinn and Cyril are apartment neighbors. Cyril is outgoing and McQuinn meets his match in Cybil. They connect in more ways than one and they fall in love
Author: Nora Roberts First published: 1999 Length: 295 pages (Large Print). Setting: Contemporary. New York. Sex: Infrequent. Reasonably explicit. Hero: Playwright. Heroine: Author/illustrator of a popular cartoon strip.
Fun and easy. Bubbly, happy, independent heroine. Stoic, withdrawn, creative hero. Lots of lust. Some romance. A bubblegum beach read.

I’ve read a lot of Nora Roberts’s books. I’ve mentioned before that when I first started reading romance novels, I went to her books first. The Perfect Neighbor was the very first Nora Roberts’ book I ever read, so right there, this book has a special place in my heart. But even if you take out the nostalgia I have for this book, The Perfect Neighbor is still a pretty great contemporary romance novel.
The Perfect Neighbor is the ninth book in the MacGregor series and focuses on Cybil Campbell, granddaughter (of a sort) to Patriarch Daniel MacGregor. Cybil is a cartoonist and makes her living creating strips for her comic strip. Seriously, this sounds like such a fun career, and Cybil totally loves it. It’s perfect for her. She lives in New York City and is friendly with ALL of her neighbors. Well, all the neighbors, except new neighbor Preston.
Cybil is such a friendly young woman. She’s so nice, and very outgoing; she’s basically the epitome of what it is to be an extrovert. Cybil is always willing to lend a hand to any of her neighbors, and really loves having a strong relationship with all of them. So when she gets a new neighbor, she naturally welcomes him to the building with a plate of cookies and a knock on his door.
Preston . . . is not the extroverted, friendly type. He would have been perfectly happy camping out in his temporary apartment and not meeting any of his neighbors. So when Cybil knocks on his door, he’s not particularly friendly to her. But then, they do get friendly!
The characters of The Perfect Neighbor really came alive. I could feel Cybil’s energy and friendliness, and Preston’s reserve and hesitancy to get involved with Cybil. But of course he can’t resist her and it’s a damn good thing, because they are perfect together.
I must mention my absolutely adoration of Daniel MacGregor who wants all his family to be happily married and having babies. Seriously, he’s so meddlesome, but in the best way. I adore him, and whenever he makes an appearance he always makes me smile.
So, if you’re looking for a happy, easy to read contemporary romance with fabulous characters you can root for, definitely look into The Perfect Neighbor. It’s a fabulous story packed into a small package. This review was originally posted on Quinn's Book Nook
The MacGregor series comes to an end with Cybil MacGregor, the daughter of Grant and Gennie from One Man's Art. Cybil is quirky, talkative, and outgoing, a direct contrast to her new neighbor across the hall -- a moody playwright named Preston McQuinn. If you loved One Man's Art, you should pick this book up (you'll see some similiarities)! This is the last chance to see what all of the MacGregors are up to, including fiesty Daniel. To hear a full discussion of The Perfect Neighbor listen to Season 1, Ep. #14 "Nora Roberts The MacGregors: Mac & Cybil" of Romancing the Shelf, a Nora Roberts podcast: https://romancingtheshelf.libsyn.com/
Maybe because this book is based so in her element living in New York, that it really doesn’t seem believable she’d hide out in Connecticut with him after the ending. Where are the friends and neighbors? Make new sure but it’s isolated, a fortress like the Macgregor castle and her dads lighthouse. Idk if I see it.
Re-read again for a bit of comfort reading! Good old- fashioned romance with happy endings all round. Just right when you're ill or a bit down; like a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows and a fleecy blanket 😊
I did not care for this series. I felt that there was more romance than story which did not interest me. I did finish the series to see if it gets any better and also felt obligated to finish series at that time in my life.
