Dear nine-year-old me,

You can read and you aren't dumb. I picked this up at the library to prove to myself, which is you, that the guilt of - never reading as a kid so I never will - is outdated. A Puppy called Hugo is targeted for your age group but written for no ideal audience. It's not hard to read, just so carelessly written with no depth to anyone or anything that happens it's torture. I can imagine you tugging your hair and the other pointing-under sentences, reading and re-reading during silent reading time. 'There is nothing I enjoy more than catching the odd forty winks during the daytime. ' (p.1)

This book isn't much more than a pretty cover and the author having a deadline so writing anything to make pages. A car crash that never gets mentioned again? Yes. How about the family needing money so putting on an animal show with local pets in the neighbourhood? Wasn't enough, so next comes a House-Fire! Of course that'll be dramatic enough!! And it's stretched out, confusing, boring and great if you're considering a nap. Two pugs go in and out of a burning house to rescue their owner. Pages of Percy saying he took lungfuls of clean air, lungfuls of inside-smokey air, lungfuls of autumn air. Black out. Hugo and dad Percy have no idea what just happened and the vet smells like lemons? But they are heros! They saved Grandad! Then it's christmas and may everyone be wished a merry year.

There's a reason I saw the second copy in the $2 box.

I love you lots, from twenty-two year old me.

Usually I don’t like sequels anywhere near as much as the first, but this was an exception. I actually think I enjoyed this one more than the first book, which I absolutely adore. I loved all of the “new” characters and the return of so many beloved characters from the first book. I loved all the references to real life shows and people - it made me chuckle. But most of all what I loved about this book was the way that the story was told through a dog’s eyes. I’ve read so many books about dogs and families but I’ve never really read books where the dog tells the story and I loved seeing real life situations through the eyes of our four legged friends. The friendships, the love and the way that everyone came together in difficult times was so beautiful to read about and this one actually made me cry several times (maybe because the subject matter and the storyline with Eric is very close to home right now). I can’t believe I’ve come to the end of this series, this will definitely require a reread later on. I absolutely loved this book and am so glad that it was my first read of 2024!
