Robby is seeing ghosts, and he’s not the only one. There are few people left in the world—many of them are thinking about how things might have been. They’re seeing ghosts of a life that was nearly reality. This new war that descends on them is more insidious than the last. This time, they’re battling their own desire, and fighting to stay alive, as individuals. They’re fighting to remain Distinct.
Ike Hamill writes fast-paced horror novels with strong, relatable characters. His books have gained a steady following amongst readers who enjoy his blend of sci-fi, paranormal, occult, and suspense. Whether focused on a small family trying to survive the move to a haunted house, or following a band of angry rebels determined to withstand an apocalypse, his stories draw the reader into the lives of real people in crisis. Readers are always sad to leave the characters behind when the book is finished.
Reviewers compare Ike to Dean Koontz and Stephen King—two of his favorite authors. His narrative often jumps between interwoven stories, presenting readers with a fresh perspective and keeping them guessing until the last chapter. Most of Ike’s readers are repeat customers. Pick up one of his books to learn why.
I can accept an alien gestating in the earth. I can accept that alien ripping through all realities, I can accept the destruction of that alien. I can accept the people being carried along to different realities. What made no sense to me was one man, the orgin, who ripped through all the realities and was able to influence and control all the remaining people and He was the cause of the churn. He was a man! How did he get that kind of power? Also this book had a lot of wrong words, like nobody proofread it before it was published.
I was a little disappointed with this final book (?) of this story. We do find out that everything is the result of what are basically parallel universes that get intertwined because of The Origin. What is puzzling to me is why The Origin was not more of a major character until this book. In my opinion, it is not really necessary to read Distinct in order to appreciate the entire story that began in Extinct. It is almost as if Distinct was an after thought, or a desperate attempt to wrap up some loose ends.
A lot going on here. Not uninteresting, but really hard to keep track of at times. I probably would have a hard time explaining what actually happened. Just too many plot lines and characters. Some work but some don't.
You definitely need to read the books in this series in order. I inhaled the earlier books, but made myself slow down with this one. The world building, the characters , the premise for this series was so good I didn't want it to end. What started as horror seamlessly segued in horrifying science fiction, and what happens when all those worlds of possibility collide, when every possible outcome of an action is a separate world, and now trying to all exist in just one spot. It also gives us a look into how the feelings we keep buried in our hearts can either be our greatest strength or our biggest weakness. There's still plenty of creepy moments, bizarre creatures, and other world elements that will cause a shudder or two. This series just calls out to be made into a blockbuster movie.
This is the fourth book (one is a short story) in this series of stories. It was great to revisit this world that Ike Hamill has created. It becomes more and more complex and the characters are amazing. After Instinct, you think that everything is fine (relatively) and that the people left can start rebuilding their world. Well, it turns out that things are more messed up than they realized and there are more forces at work. The old characters are more developed and the new characters are well developed. I would recommend this to anyone who loved the first two novels and you really need to read those to really understand this one.
Since it had been a while since I read the first two books, it took a long time to get all the characters straight. And there are many. That the chapters jumped from person/group to another was both confusing and interesting. The "cliff-hangers" made me want to continue but also had me retracing some chapters when I forgot what had happened. It did grow on me and looking back, the story wasn't bad, but it was incomprehensible. The characters were constantly asking questions and trying to figure out what was happening. Rarely did they get an understandable answer and that got frustrating. Even so, I'll continue on to the next book to see where this crazy story goes next.
I read this one to continue the story about the characters I loved but I had to skim a lot. Its just crazy! The story makes little sense and it's all over the place. I finally gave up. There's too many silly animals and different worlds and it's never explained to my satisfaction. Because ultimately it's just stupid. I am done with this series. There's a fifth but I can't read it. I got too upset with this one being so illogical. The author just goes with anything that hits his imagination I guess and tries to work it into the story but there's no rhyme or reason to most of it. I've never read a story this messy.
I was drawn into Extinct with awe. The characters became real to me. Their struggle against the unknown, to finally meet the Origin. Some scary moments, difficult decisions. Travelling to be thrown into another dimension, battling the unknown & unexpected. The characters all experiencing their own version of the world I found intriguing. From Carrie's difficult decision to help with the survival of those left rebuilding their lives. This book was wonderfully written and presented. Superb Author
I love, love, love this author. So incredibly original. This did not in any way dissappoint. This follows our characters, through the realization, that letting go of the past, can become realistically deadly. When the world has already collapsed, and you become aware that everyone's reality is just a little different than yours. Follow Robby and his friends, as they struggle to survive and unravel the mystery.
I have not reviewed the the other first 2 books. I wanted to do it all at once. These were truly remarkable books. The characters became my friends and suffered right along with them always hoping that in the end all would be good. You didn't disappoint. These were great.
I was thrilled to stumble on this book 4 in the Extinct series and even happier to see that there was a book 5. The characters are great! The world is scary! And I can visualize the whole easily. Ike Hamill has an inexhaustible brain full of ideas...and I can't wait to read about all of them.
I was very excited to pick back up in Robby's world and this book did not disappoint. Familiar characters that stay true to their nature alongside a unique world that changes every minute. I will absolutely be downloading the next book as soon as I submit this review.
New author to me but I really enjoyed the series. The storyline was different and definitely made me want to keep reading. The characters were believable and varied.
I really enjoyed this series of books. The character development was very good and the story line kept me wanting to continue. I found myself completely interested and wanted to keep reading.
I really enjoyed this series, the were a few times I got a little lost but overall it was a great read and hard to put down. Once off those series you don't want to end.
I really loved this book and couldn’t put it down. I was confused as to how the Orgin became the Orgin but loved the real and not real story lines of the characters and Carries part totally eluded me.
In this 4th book of the Extinct series you won't be disappointed. A convergence of the 3 previous books answers a lot of questions, but also leaves some new questions. Great characters and a great plot. Another great story.
Interesting development to the story, but it progresses far too slowly. The coyote chase particularly was an extremely dull and pointless chunk of the book just to fill up page numbers.
