Fool's Notion

Rate this book
Missouri mules were the best. Alda grew to love the creatures working side by side with her pa on their farm along the banks of the Missouri River. He would be hopping mad when he realized his wife and daughter colluded behind his back to sell a pack string. It wouldn’t matter that they were trying to save the farm.

Alda struck out on her own to drive the team over fifteen hundred miles. By day three, her lead mule Bessie refused to take one more step. It was a good thing the handsome cowboy Cord stopped by to lend a hand or Alda might still be sitting in the dust.

Now, Alda needed the man to move on so she could continue her journey. Judging by the spark in Cord’s eye … it just might take some convincing.

Fool’s Notion is a charming story of a stubborn woman (is it any wonder she’s driving mules across the country) and the mysterious man who self-appoints himself her ‘cowboy in shining stirrups’ (my term. don’t judge the author for my feeble attempts to make ‘knight in shining armor’ fit the theme of the story lol) There’s adventure, romance, emotion, and faith – all woven together in a setting that is at once beautiful and treacherous.

Alda is spunky and determined to save her family home after her mother’s death, no matter what her father says. Granted, she’s also quite foolish in how she goes about it. After she is given a decent share of some reward money, I kept thinking “oh good. She’ll herd all those mules on a train now and save herself the trouble of driving them from Missouri to California.” Nope. Why choose the easy way when the hard way remains an option – seems to be Alda’s motto lol. Cord, for his part, is a swoony bounty hunter (yum) who decides to stick with Alda to keep her out of trouble. Not the best choice as far as their reputations, perhaps, but goodness gracious she needed a keeper. Don’t get me wrong – Alda is a strong heroine with more grit than most, but she doesn’t always have the ‘trail smarts’ to match her bravado. Ergo, disaster often ensues, especially in Cord’s absence.

Bottom Line: Fool’s Notion is a great choice for fans of western ‘trail’ romances, though there are some small issues with pacing, motivation, and shallow development of both writing style and characters. Overall though, readers will be engaged in finding out what happens to Cord and Alda & all those mules! A sweet romance with a healthy dose of adventure thrown in too!

If you would have told me a few months ago that I was going to read a book about mules, I probably would have laughed. Mules? Sure, they are cute, but who has a use for them? Flickinger's Fool's Notion has made me a believer. Now granted the mules weren't the main part of the story line per se, but I did enjoy reading about them and Alda's adoration for them.

Perhaps that biggest scene stealer, however, was Cord. Handsome? Yes. Bounty hunter? Yes. Stealer of hearts? You betcha! Cord was strong, determined, and just over all a good guy. Now, do I think it is weird that a Christian was a bounty hunter? Kind of. But the way Flickinger writes this character, it just all makes sense. From the very first time he saved Alda I was hooked. The interaction with Cord and the meddlesome bad guy was actually quite funny at times to be honest, and that's when I knew that Cord was going to be my favorite.

Not only is this story about Alda's journey across the west, but her journey as a person. This sweet story is sure to put a smile on your face on a rainy afternoon. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Fool’s Notion by Lisa J. Flickinger first caught my eye with its unusual and intriguing cover. A redheaded woman in a beautiful period dress is watching a mule train trek across barren land. I knew there had to be a great story there.

In 1883, Alda Lealand of Kansas has decided to take the California trail as a single lady. Unusual enough, but she is also driving a pack of mules 1500 miles cross-country to be sold following her mother’s death and father’s disappearance. Cord is the bounty hunter who can’t settle down, but can’t keep himself from coming to Alda’s rescue more times than she would like.

I really enjoyed this light-hearted western. I often found myself laughing at situations in which the characters found themselves. The romance is sweet, albeit not smooth, due to the personalities and baggage both Alda and Cord have.

Alda has to learn that God is a “God who cared about His family, not like a fickle earthly father-like her father-but a God whose love was deep and wide.”

I found the perfect phrase for me to remember when I act like a stubborn mule, dig in my heels, and hold on like I’m right and no one better challenge me...
“You’re not above forgiving, are you?...”

All in all, just a great, fun book that I learned a few lessons from as I had a great time getting to know the characters. Highly recommended.

I gratefully received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Celebrate Lit. This in no way influenced my opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

I love a good story of a young woman trying to be strong all while making a complete fool of herself. Alda was just that. Trying to save her family and farm from ruin she sets out on the journey of her life. Not knowing what lay ahead of her, but knowing determination, will see her through. Alda is as stubborn as the mules she was transporting. I just loved her! I loved her determination and bravery. My heart cheered her on but felt the sadness she felt in her trials.
Then along comes the ever handsome Cord. He is a knight-in-shining-armor with a sense of humor. A man on the run from a controlling family life yet upholds the law. Cord will bend over backwards to see justice is served.
Once I started I could not put it down. I felt the story captured my attention and I could not wait to see what happened next. A very quick enjoyable clean read recommended for all.

A journey driving a team of mules from Missouri to Death Valley becomes one with much more depth for Alda Lealand.
3.5 Stars

Alda is determined, stubborn and courageous but she also loves her home and misses her mama. When she meets Cord near the beginning of her adventure, she is ready to send him on his way after his assistance. Yet he somehow keeps showing up just when she needs rescuing.

There’s an air of mystery around Cord—I mean the guy doesn’t even give his last name—and the desire to unravel it made me keep reading to find out his story. And then there’s Alda’s proclivity to land in situations she needs saving from.

Lisa J. Flickinger takes her heroine and readers on an emotional journey of finding faith and falling in love while peppering in plenty of adventure, action, and suspense. Fool’s Notion is an entertaining read with plenty going on to hold your interest.

Fool’s Notion by Lisa J. Flikinger is an enjoyable sweet and inspiring story about a woman’s journey as she treks across the west with her mule pack. A simple, light, and quick read, Flikinger has created a tale with pleasant characters and an agreeable setting. Not only is this story about a personal journey, it also has a bit of sweet romance. Although the first third to half of the book is a bit slow going, the pace does pick up. Readers will not be disappointed if they push to the end of this charming story.

As usual with Lisa Flickinger’s books, I love the cover.

A young woman—Alda Lealand—travels with a string of donkeys from Kansas to California, and encounters many trials along the California Trail. She also meets a young bounty hunter named Cord, who helps her accomplish her goal.

The characters in Fool’s Notion are strong. Alda is as feisty as one might expect of a young woman who takes on such a challenge, and her brilliant, curly red hair seems to add exclamation to her personality. She has trouble trusting, due to past experiences, but won’t give up. Cord has his own reasons for doubting her, as well as himself. The relational advancement is intriguing, and the dialogue natural and believable, giving the reader a sense of individual character development and story progression.

I was drawn into the setting of this book: the old West, wagon trains, the law of the land, how people engaged with each other when their lives were in constant danger from men and nature. The author has done much research in order to present this story in a credible manner.

I also appreciated the use of humor for pacing and interest, with just enough romance to engage the historical romance reader.

As far as plot goes, this novel is full of unexpected twists, which make the read exciting. One never knows what the next challenge will be or where it will appear from. There are definitely some unanticipated sources of the obstacles in Alda’s path.

Throughout the novel, Alda senses the fragrance of faith, which influences her life and its direction. A great take-away value for a fascinating story.

I recommend this book to readers who appreciate a well-told story, especially one from a historical perspective with a touch of romance. Five stars from this reviewer.

This is the first novel I've read by Lisa J.Flickenger. I took right away to her writing style which was easy to read and her descriptions of the 1880's time period were well written. I really enjoyed her main characters, Alda & Cord. They both were dealing with running from their past.

Alda, a young woman from Missouri was traveling west by herself along with a team of mules that belonged to her father. She had taken them without his permission shortly after her mother died. Along the way, Cord, who is working as a bounty hunter comes to her rescue and volunteers to go with her to Death Valley, California where her uncle lives. She has made arrangements for her uncle to sell the team.

I loved how the author had teamed up this unlikely pair and created tension, danger, and a hint of romance along the way. Alda, who used to be a Christian had strayed away from God & Cord tries to help her find her way back, even though he is going through his own struggles.

The story was a fast-paced, action-packed adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I love Alda's spunkiness and determination. Also, loved her willingness to help others.

"Fool's Notion" by Lisa J. Flickinger is a wonderful story of love at first sight. It is also a story of a person that is supposed to love someone loves money more.

Alda is determined to save her family's farm but to do so she puts herself into danger and her father even puts her into a situation that is hard to accept and even imagine that a father would do!

Both Cole and Alda claims that the other saved them from situations, but I say they saved each other.

This book was filled with twists that kept me turning the pages from page one to the end and I even wanted to keep reading.

Alda learns that her father's claim that God is for weak folks isn't true at all.

I like this story because even through some of the characters became Christians, not all the characters accepted the Christian life just like in real life. I like fictional reads that have a little real life mixed in.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These are my own opinions.

It's 1883 and Missouri Mules were known to be the best mules for hauling, especially heavy loads. Most young ladies were busy batting their eyes and flirting with the young men in their circle. The thought of being a mule skinner would never have even enetered their minds - much less moving a pack of mules from Missouri to California! Apparently not the case for our young heroine, Alda, who set out on her own to deliver a mule string all the way, without the thought of the danger of traveling alone. Fortunately a friendly, God-fearing bounty hunter finds her and her mules and attempts to help her with this ill-advised journey.
I must admit that I laughed out loud at times with the predicaments she finds herself in. There were also times I wondered if she would survive. In all, this is a wonderful story of perseverance, learning to trust God and believing in others.

Once in a while a book comes along that captures my imagination and this is one of those books. While I have never personally dealt with mules, the author does a great job of painting a picture of what dealing with them must be like. I could imagine how Alda must have felt going behind her father’s back with her mother’s assistance to sell a pack string to save their family farm. I found myself rooting for Alda to accomplish her goal.

The book was fast-paced and did an excellent job of keeping my interest. I could appreciate the struggles Alda and Cord had both with their physical journey to California as well as their spiritual journey. The cover of the book is amazing with the beautiful red-head in a period dress. She perfectly depicts what I wanted Alda to look like. This book is one that is truly worth reading.

Fool’s Notion

This was a very interesting and enjoyable book. Alda is traveling by herself with the mules to sell them to her uncle. She is trying to save her family farm but her father ends up charging her with stealing the mules.

Cord who is a bounty hunter comes upon her and decides to make sure she stays safe. They meet other families along the way. But he cannot always be around.

This is historical so there is lots of wildernesses and different type of adventure we would have today since traveling by horse, wagon, mule, etc. The story has a good flow to it and you never knew what would happen next.

Interesting story!

When you start reading it’s like another cowboy story, but once you get into reading you don’t want to stop!! Loved the characters an the relationship to the animals especially, I thought I wouldn’t enjoy reading this interesting story but as I continued to read it got me to where I wanted to know more, read more, anyone would enjoy this interesting story of hardship and lack of family closeness a story anyone could relate too! Thank you for including the need to know God in a special way, how to trust in him and show many details about salvation! Thank you so much to the author for making this story so interesting and I would recommend to anyone!!

MY THOUGHTS:

A fun and delightful story. Within its pages, author Lisa J. Flickinger's talent for writing flows throughout each page. It is funny, suspense filled, encouraging and just an all around great read. The main characters of Alda, Cord and a few others are the kind you connect with in a flash. Each has their own secrets and past yet they strive to put it behind them and focus on the day ahead. It is a quick and easy read and one you will want to take time for and enjoy on any kind of day.

Blessings,

Karen

She was as stubborn as her mules and Alda thought she could drive a team of mules over fifteen hundred miles.. to save her home.. Alone!  She thought she was strong enough but the story gets interesting when handsome cowboy Cord arrives out of nowhere. Plenty of action as we ride along the fifteen hundred mile trail to California. I really enjoyed this trip!

Well Howdy Folks. Welcome to a trip to the 1880s. The land is rugged at times, the weather unforgiving and dreams of settling down whispers in the clouds. If there has ever been a fiery, independent, outspoken young woman it has to be Alda. She may not be tall or look like she can take care of herself, but let me tell you, don't ever underestimate a young woman on a mission to save her family home. What was she thinking taking mules across country by herself from Missouri to California? Mules aren't exactly easy to give directions to, but Alda has something to prove.

I loved the description the author gave of the land and I felt as if I was right beside Alda cheering her own as dust filtered into our mouths. Cord is one of those men who is attractive, strong and has a dangerous job. He comes upon Alda when she is in need of help. There is definitely a trust issue between the two but maybe Colt can help her get to her destination safely. Can two strangers work together or will one of them turn their back on the other? I know if I was out in the wilderness I wouldn't be to trusting when a stranger wanted to join up with me.

The story is a great historical story that is filled with danger, secrets, and a deep faith in God. The author delivers good characters and an array of adventure that makes you feel like you are in a western movie. I loved how Alda and Colt each had a secret that could change the way they feel about each other. Colt to me was the one who had the most to worry about, but I won't say why. They meet wagon trains on the way that seem to be a blessing as they are now not alone if trouble was to start. The rumors of robbers could really stop a wagon train of hardworking people in their tracks.

I liked the story and found it to be a well written saga of the western life. There is one character in the story that I didn't like. He was rude, arrogant and unkind to women. I was cheering for Colt to let him know how to treat women with respect. This part of the story was interesting and I liked how the author handled it with grace. Be sure you don't miss this great story set during a time were surviving was hard and people worked together to build a future.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I loved Fool's Notion. It is about a lady named Alda who leaves her home with her family's prized mules to sell them in California. She is doing this against her father's wishes so save the family's farm. She planned this with her mother before her mother died. The distance from Missouri to California is sizable. Things are going well until one of Alda's mules eats to much sand and becomes ill. Alda is stuck with a sick mule that refuses to move. A cowboy named Cord comes to the rescue. The problem is Alda does not think she needs help. Despite Alda's objections, Cord is able to help the mule and decides he is going to help Alda travel to California.

Cord Sweet is a bounty hunter. He was a soldier and is running from his wealthy family that has expectations for him that don't fit into what Cord wants for his life. He is a good bounty hunter but the lifestyle puts him in danger often. He does not know why he feels he needs to protect Alda but he does. They join up with a wagon train that is headed to Oregon. Things go well until a cowboy named Walker takes an interest in Alda. When Alda rejects him, Walker gets his revenge on Cord. When Cord is in the hospital due to a longhorn accident that Walker is responsible for, Alda comes face to face with Walker once again. When she rejects him a second time Alda lands in prison.

Cord realizes Alda is in prison and realizes he loves her and intends to marry her. He will do what he needs to do to get her released and take care of her. He has been on the trail of dangerous train robbers, but now they have turned the tides and he is the one being hunted.

Fool's Notion is well written and the characters are so enjoyable that you are rooting for them. The book features suspense, action, and romance. Perfect combination.

Fool’s Notion by author Lisa J. Flickenger is a Christian historical romance set in 1883. Filled with adventure, humor, sass, romance, and history, this book was easy to pick up and hop right into its pages. I was immediately invested. It was the first I had read by this author, and I will be watching for more.

It is the tale of Alda Lealand, a young woman on a journey. She takes off on a solo mission from Kansas on the California Trail with animals to sell in hopes of saving her home. Does this cause trouble? You betcha. At home and on the trail.

Along the way Alda meets good looking bounty hunter Cole. He is all that and a Christian. Cole makes a perfect hero and is one lovable character. The author made him strong, sincere, kind, and handsome. Oh my!

I enjoyed the author’s writing style. Her story was well thought, researched, planned, and written. The descriptive writing style of the author took me to the West in the late nineteenth century. I learned facts about wagon trains, mules, and women riding horseback for extended periods of time. (You will need to read the book for that one.) Characters are well rounded and dialogue sounds smooth and not forced. This was an easy to understand book with a twist or two.

I love Christian books that don’t water down the fact the characters are Christian. This one passed the test. Deception, redemption, prayer, forgiveness and growth are all tackled in this book. It is a sweet book, and nice read. I would definitely recommend this. Anyone who enjoys historical light romance, especially westerns will love this. I rated it a 4 out of 5 stars because I really liked it. I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from CelebrateLit. All thoughts and reviews are my own, honest ones.

Based on the book synopsis, I had hopes that Fool’s Notion was going to be the perfect bedtime read for me. A bit of history, a touch of adventure, and with mules I felt sure there would be a bit of comic relief tossed in as well.

Unfortunately after just a few chapters, I was struggling with Alda, Cord, and their story. I found myself not liking the main characters of this story and had difficulty believing that it was all possible. A young woman traveling on her own with a pack of mules across country in the late 1800s? Cord comes to her rescue and helps her join a wagon train for a safe journey across country. No one seems to question the respectability of this arrangement?

Despite my issues with Fool’s Notion, I continued reading and completed the book. There was a hope that Alda and Cord’s story would capture my interest. However, the story fell flat for me. The writing was stilted and shallow in development. The ending of the book was disappointing. Giving the perception of Alda’s character at the beginning, for her to allow herself to be tossed around at the end is maddening.

Another confession: I am definitely a “mood reader”. There are days where I want lighthearted and frivolous and other days I want deeply moving tales of epic proportions. I have found that a book I didn’t enjoy six months ago, I can now read with pleasure. With those thoughts in mind, it could be that I read Fool’s Notion on a bad day. So I will likely grab one of her other titles and give it a go!

This is a sweet story about Alda who is trying to do the right thing for her family but she doesn't always go about it in the right way. She's a stubborn girl and wants to do things her way...hence, trouble seems to find her every step of the way.

Alda decides to drive a pack of mules 1500 miles to earn enough money to save the farm after her mother's death. Her father really isn't any help at all and I found myself thinking he needed to "man up" more than once! lol

Thankfully, she meets Cord, a bounty hunter, who makes it his mission to try and keep her out of trouble and help her as she goes on this mission. I thought he was a really great guy and I loved that he had so much concern and care for Alda.

This book is a journey across country but, more than that, it's a journey of faith. I really liked seeing Alda gain a strong faith and the growth we see in her as a result. I really enjoyed the romance of this story but also the twists and turns of the story line. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Fool's Notion is a historical western romance novel by author Lisa J. Flickinger. The setting is the California Trail, 1883

The reader meets the female protagonist, Alda, on the very first page as she is driving the most stubborn of animals across the country. We also meet Cord, the hero, who seems to want to help Alda, although Alda is as stubborn as her pack of mules. The reader follows along as Alda faces danger, turmoil, and touches of humor. I found it interesting to learn that sitting in the saddle every day would ruin underclothes, at least for the woman of the 1800's.

I loved that even when in tough situations Alda could still pray for herself and others. I wish there had been more action-packed drama in this story. As it is I left the story still wanting more, it felt too simple. I couldn't believe it had ended.

This was my introduction to this author. Would I read more books by this author? Yes, I believe I would. I give this book 4* because I liked it, but didn't necessarily love it.

This was a fun western themed novel. I really liked the story and the mules made me giggle. There was much growth in this novel and I am not talking about the mules, Alda is trying to keep her family afloat though her father isn’t helping too much. She tries to come up with a way to produce some money and ends up meeting Cord, a man that finds those that have gone against the law. He is certainly not looking for Alda but when he finds her, it is hard to let her go.

I think this story was great; romance, faith and humor all flowed through this story. Creating such moments that stayed with a reader to the very last page. I would recommend reading this story.

A simple but likeable and engaging novella. An easy, comfortable read with a light and sweet touch of faith and romance but with enough action to keep it real. This is a sweet historical fiction story. It was a crazy idea for Alda to try to cross the country in 1883 by herself with a group of donkeys. I like how Cord meets Alda and I enjoyed how they interact with each other. There is a bit of romance and a bit of intrigue in the story. Alda Leland and Preston Cordell "Cord" Sweet are as unlikely a pair as oil and water, at least at first. Cord is a bounty hunter, Alda is a fiery red-head who is just as stubborn as the mules she's driving cross-country to sell to save her father's ranch. A ranch that wouldn't need saving had her father been a responsible man instead of some feather-brained, scheming, selfish jerk who abandoned Alda soon after her mother's death. Cord comes to Alda's rescue several times, much to her chagrin, [spoiler alert]

only to eventually wind up in prison because her own father accuses her of stealing the mules. [end spoiler alert]

A delightful read.
