Sons of Beasts #3

Son of the Dragon

Rate this book
Deep in a high security shifter prison dwells the most dangerous shifter in the world. Vyr Daye is the Red Dragon, alpha to the Sons of Beasts Crew, loner, watcher, fire-breather…and he’s also completely misunderstood. The media has dragged him through the mud, his reputation is shot, and his own father helped to put him in prison for a one-year sentence. Only this prison isn’t what it seems and he’s fighting to keep his dragon alive. All he needs to do is keep steady for six more months and then he can live his life as quietly as possible with his crew, but one sexy, fast-talking prison counselor saunters in and wrecks his focus. Riyah isn’t what she seems, but no one can sense her powers besides Vyr. He’ll keep her secrets if she keeps his. And as the dragon inside of him starts losing his battle, he’ll need her help to gather his crew and pull him from the brink before it’s too late. And the more he gets to know the beguiling woman, the more he thinks she’s here for more important reasons than even he understands.

Riyah Mercer has been hired to infiltrate the shifter prison and watch Vyr’s back. He doesn’t trust her, but he doesn’t realize she is his only friend here. She can see him struggling, and can see the dragon fading. As she starts falling hard for the stoic man, she becomes determined to do anything to save him. But saving the dragon means unleashing his fire on the world, and that’s not the only danger Riyah is in. There are eyes everywhere in the prison and they are creating something monstrous down in the cell where they keep the Red Dragon. If she is caught helping the man she’s falling in love with, it could mean the end for them both.

Guuuuurl did good. God damn, where to start?.

I don't know what I expected from the last book of this series however it took a turn I just didn't see coming.
I loved the way this one was written and how unique it truly is. The plot was perfectly executed and the story seamlessly written. The characters fit to perfection and the feel of the book just fit. I loved Vyr and Riyah! They are perfectly suited and all round fantastic characters.
Their story has so much emotion woven through it sometimes it's hard to take in. For such a short story I didn't feel like I missing anything. I love all the characters old and new, they shouldn't work but fit so perfectly together it's hard not love them in all there crazy disfunctional glory.

I'm honestly gutted this is the last of this series, though I'm sure it's not the last of these characters. Sons Of Beasts is definitely my favourite series to day by this author.

I can’t get past certain aspects of this book. How could your father leave you to suffer like that? How could you be so fucking powerful and still submit yourself to abuse? How could you let the assholes holding you be so smug and think they power over you?

This book made me mad. I wanted better for Vyr’s story. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Riyah, but she couldn’t fix this book for me. It’s all wrong.

2 stars. Barely. Angry stars.

Ok but could have been more

I started with this series years and years ago when it was about this ragtag group of Lumberjack werewolves. Such a combo. And Lumberjacks was all the rage in romance. But somewhere along the way I got bored. Each story in each series was repetitive and followed the same pattern. The immature potty humor jokes. Everything just felt rehash and stale. So I stopped reading the books. Picking this one up after a long hiatus, I can affirm that...the universe hasn't grown up even though the shifters are. And that's not horrible. Just means the story is like Campbell's comfort soup. It's known. There's a lot of variations. It's a bit bland. But it gets the job done.

This one had an ending I wasn't sure felt earned. A lot of slow burn ground work to then quickly move through story points to get to the happy ending. It makes for an odd reading experience. It's not bad but I feel the characters deserved more. More depth. More maturity. More gravitas. The themes are actually pretty serious and deep and reflective of our current times. Yet here it feels like a costume the author wants to try on. Kind of like using aspects of Black culture (Baby Got Back reference)-- an easy plug that's a quick joke. It feels uncomfortable to me how the author does that. Uses pieces of other cultures in these broad humor moments that feels too close to mocking

I'm so not ready for it to be over!!

Whew! This was such a hard book to read with everything that the Red Dragon had to go through. I am not usually an emotional reader but between the torture and trauma that happened behind those walls and knowing that this is the last we will see of so many beloved characters, this was definitely one of the few that give me all the feels. The way that the members of the Sons of Beasts Crew will do anything for each other including go to prison is incredible and I absolutely love the way they love each other and wish I had friends like that. The badass princess is one seriously kickass chick and she literally walked through fire for her man and pulled him from the fire as well. She was definitely the hero of this story. The bond between the princess and the dragon was palpable from the moment they figured out how much they had in common and it made a great story that much better.
I'm sad this journey is over but it ended in such a good way. I know that I will like wherever she takes us next and can't freaking wait to see what she has in store for us.

Last of the Sons of Beasts. Bittersweet. I loved it but sad that was it! Cant wait to see what comes about next! I've followed this author from the beginning and no signs of slowing or ever stopping cause I just love her. She works hard on her stuff and she feels what she writes and we dont get that often with writers. They are rare. If you haven't read any of her books you are missing out. You should read in order though. These books just do it for me. I laugh and cry a lot! They just tug on your heartstrings! You feel what these characters go through and their trials and heartbreak! Each one is different and unique and thats why it works.

Vyr's book is special. In a way its wrapping up but that doesnt mean she wont ever go back to her crews. Never say never! I've been waiting for his story and truly I'm glad his was last because in some ways it was the best. Misunderstood dragon. Everyone believing the worst about him and believing the hype and rumors. Broken dragon...son of the Blue Dragon Damon Daye. He's not had it easy and you definitely felt for him. Is he beyond hope?

Riyah is sent in to help Vyr. She's terrified because she too hears the rumors and believes the worst. Weird thing is she feels safe with him and she's not scared of him. She's there to protect him and get him out. What she discovers is truly horrendous. These 2 souls cant help but be drawn to one another. Its funny and sweet and well Riyah gets to know The Red Dragon for who he really is. Is it too late to save his dragon? Will his crew come for him?

The tone of this one was so bleak, but I expected that going into it knowing that Vry was in prison, but I really didn’t expect the guards to be truly out to get Vry. I figured that with Damon setting things up it would be like a country club prison. I was glad that Ryiah was brought in to help Vry. The connection the two of them had was great! I think both of them helped each other over come things from the past and definitely what was happening in the present for Vry.

I loved what the crew did for Vry. Often a little of Nox goes a long way, but when Nox got to talk to Vry, it was the best thing for him. He knew that his crew wanted him around as much as he wanted them.

The ending was great! I loved how all of the crews came to show support, first when the horror of what was happening came out, then later at the end to just show the love!

This is a trilogy from T. S. Joyce. Right now what I need is to read something that pulls me away from reality, entertains me, makes me laugh, makes me worried and makes me happy. As far as I’m concerned this checked all of the boxes.
#3 Son of Kong

This is the end of the trilogy. The Dragon is behind bars. I have to say this was absolutely fun, yummy, hot, thrilling, and just what I needed. Vyr is completely bad ass delicious. Rayih is the perfect match for him and strong in her own right. We see the entire crew and we have some really fun moments when the three women are together. Of course Nox is both incredibly strong and incredibly entertaining. This is the end of the trilogy even though TS Joyce keeps saying this is a standalone it really does fit perfectly into the world all of her other books are set in.
Is this perfect? Far from it but it did take this reader away from this reality by making me laugh and mist up for a while. Great big yes and thank you!

Vyr's Amazing Transformation

How does T do it? How does she redeem these miserable creatures, these unsaveable wretches who seemingly have no way out? How does she make each story unique and yet still familiar and satisfying? How does she make a family out of the scraps and leftovers, the damaged and the broken? I have no idea, but I love to read every word.

DAMON’S MOUNTAINS SERIES REVIEW

I wasn’t planning on reviewing these books at all, but given the fact that I’ve been completely OBSESSED with them for the past month, it feels wrong not to write somthing. So in the end I decided to write a general series-wide review that I’ll put up on each book—that’s right, all 48—because that’s how much fun I’ve had reading these.

Let’s do this.

OKAY listen. These books are straight up trash. They are. Romance drama trash to the max. But there’s no denying how freaking entertaining these things are. They’re hilariously funny, extremely cute, filled with action (some more than others), and packed with grade-A soap opera drama. Some of the novels are better than others, but if you need to go brainless for a while and just read something fun, these are the books you need.

All the characters are out-of-this world awesome, but the real thing that sets this series apart is the world building. Joyce has created such an elaborately rich universe with all these characters and I am 100% here for it. I love love love how everything overlaps and that we get to see all of our favorite characters even long after their books are done.

To help keep everyone straight, I even created a family tree spreadsheet like a NERD (Willa would be so proud) which you can view here. Just beware of spoilers.

Nerd alert!

FINAL WORD

These books are insane trash and I’ve loved every second. If you’re needing some laughs and romance, look no farther my friends. It’s worth the Amazon Kindle Unlimited free trial just to get your hands on these.

The couple: Vyr and Riyah

Romance genre: shifter
Series: Son of Beasts
Length: 231 pages

Plot: Vyr is our apex predator, the dragon shifter that everyone is scared of. Because of his past actions (burning some towns up), his father helps the authorities put him in prison, a special prison to hold dangerous shifters. Things are not going well for him. He has six months left, but he doesn't think he'll survive. Then, a prison counselor comes in: Riyah. She's not exactly what she seems, not quite human. She wants to help him but there are so many plans in place and none of them under her control. All she can do is try to save Vyr when everything comes crashing down.

Commentary: So many times throughout this book, I was so mad at Vyr's father. He has so much power and yet allowed - no, helped - his son to be captured and imprisoned. And Vyr suffered so much while he was in prison. The only good thing of come of his time there was meeting Riyah, and boy, did he need her. She was the one who was finally able to get through to him, to figure out how to help to get at least one of his parents to do something, and to comfort him when he felt like he lost everything. In the end, I was glad to see the leader of their crew back where he belonged.
One thing that helped me, I think, is that I haven't read the first generation of these books - I didn't read Vyr's parents' stories, so I wasn't attached to them. I could easily believe that his dad was simply a jerk - I was happy to keep believing it and now I don't want to read his story, knowing what he will do to his son in the future.

Previous book in the series: Son of Kong

Reviewed at Shifter Haven

I don’t have words right now. I do have tears streaming down my face – and so many emotions that it’s hard to get past them to form writing thoughts.

I should wait to write this review but somehow after reading Vyr and Riyah’s story I believe this review needs to be raw and full of emotions, even the ones that I can’t seem to find a voice for.

If you have followed any of the series or even all the series that make up Damon’s Mountains, then Son of the Dragon is a must read. You’ll be awed – angry – frustrated – hopeful – vindicated – fall in love all over again – and finally satisfied. If I could give Vyr’s story a 500 star rating I would, but I have to be content with a 5+.

There were moments when I was totally chilled with goosebumps, and moments that reminded me why I’ve followed and loved every single adventure of these amazing groups of shifters. If I say anything about this story I’ll end up giving away spoilers without meaning to… so I’ll simply say that this one had absolutely everything I needed. If this is the end of the tales from Damon’s Mountains then I’ll be content having known and loved a massive group of shifters and had gratefully taken a part in their lives.

Thank you, T. S. Joyce for sharing your imagination with us… and for bringing me to tears.

T has done it again!

If you've read any of her other books you will understand. Son of the Dragon was the perfect finish to an all too short series. As usual it left me feeling like I was saying goodbye to friends. Her characters have a way of digging into you and worming their way into you heart. Vyr and Riyah were no different. Their story was gritty and rough, sad and tender, raw and enlightening. You will laugh and cry and get spitting mad on their behalf and then celebrate the light at the end of that very dark tunnel you just travelled with them. You can read this as a standalone but it's so much more enveloping when you read the series and get to know the whole Sons of Beasts crew. And seriously, if you read this book and liked it, pick up one or all of T's other related series if you're not already a huge fan who's read and reread them all. I promise you won't be sorry and it's money well spent. Personally if I see her name on the cover I don't even read the blurb anymore I just one click as fast as I can and I've never ever been sorry. There are only a handful of authors that I can say I own every book they've ever written and .T.S. Joyce is one of those elite few. #keepemcoming #loveyaalpha

This is the third book in the Son of Beasts series. Vyr is serving a one year sentence in a shifter prison. He is about half way through but he won’t make it much longer. He isn’t just in prison they are doing things to him. They are trying to take his dragon. He needs his crew. Then a new counselor shows up at the prison, Riyah. Riyah isn’t just a counselor she has been sent my Vyr’s mom to make sure he survives his time in jail. At first Vyr doesn’t trust her but he soon figures out that there is more to here than he thinks and that she is there to help him. There is a crazy connection between the two. No one at the prison is as they seem. Many of them want to see Vyr dead not just without his dragon. Will Riyah be able to help him. And if she does will there be fire in the end? I truly loved this book. Vyr isn’t who you expect him to be. There is so much more to him. He lets people believe what they want to and never tries to change their mind about him. He knows his dragon is hard to control and sometimes out of control. He is crazy loyal and would do anything for his crew. I can’t say enough about this book or this series. I love these books so much. I hope there will be more books about the characters from Damon’s mountains.

Son of the Dragon is book three in the Sons of Beasts series. This is Vyr’s and Riyah’s book. Vyr is the red dragon and has additional powers that people aren’t aware of, and Riyah is a powerful witch.

At the conclusion of book two, Vyr was arrested and sentenced to serve a year in the shifter prison for the damage he did while helping to protect Torren’s sister. The public doesn’t know the real story about what happened and only saw the resulting damage. It’s been six months and the prison isn’t what everyone believes. The IESA is running the underground part and doing terrible things to the most powerful prisoners. Riyah has been sent to work at the prison undercover by Vyr’s mom Clara to check on her son. Riyah discovers the truth about what is really going on, and is determined to not only bring justice to the shifters being terribly abused, but to save Vyr and his red dragon before it’s too late.

Vry is such a strong man. He has had to hide so much his entire life and keep his powers and dragon under control. No one has understood just has bad it’s been until Riyah. She sees the man and the dragon, and she loves them both. Riyah is also a great character. She is the perfect match for Vry and I was happy with the way this ended.
