DUE TO THE FACTS THAT THIS NOVEL CENTRES AROUND, IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR ARDENT UK CONSERVATIVE SUPPORTERS. (As the ugly, inconvenient truth which drives the fiction will spoil the story and also the reader's sense of virtue and righteousness.) For everybody else;Great Britain is going through austerity. Those affected worst are the poorest and most vulnerable people in society. People who have nothing, are having the tiny amount of money they receive in benefits taken away by a spiteful government hell bent on protecting the very wealthiest, and savagely attacking the very poorest. But the problem is being ignored, or overlooked by the British public, largely due to a corrupt system where most of the media is controlled by the same wealthy people that the government pander to.In Manchester, it seems that one man is determined to put this issue right in the spotlight. His methods are met with disgust and outrage by the population, as he attacks DWP staff from behind as they leave their work, causing them life-changing injuries which shock and upset the entire nation. The DWP workers refuse to show up for work, and the whole British welfare system is thrown into chaos. Pensions and benefit payments aren’t being processed and this looks like the biggest crisis to hit the blundering, incompetent government, since the last one.DCI Andy Miller is handed an open cheque-book, and all the resources that he needs to bring this shocking crime-wave to a swift conclusion. The government announce that extra officers are being used. But in austerity Britain, there are no extra officers. Only tired, under-paid and frustrated ones who hate the government just as much as the attacker seems to. Miller and his team are going to have to dig deep and come up with something extra special in order to put a stop to this madness. THE FINAL CUT, the 5th DCI Miller adventure.Miller 1 is "One Man Crusade"Miller 2 is "Neighbours From Hell"Miller 3 is "Road To Nowhere"Miller 4 is "Gone Too Far"WARNING, Contains bad language, including the worst one a few times. I rarely start a series out of order but the advertising for this one pulled me in and boy am I glad it did!
Politics aside (for a minute at least) I was thoroughly entertained with the gritty, twisty plot and loved how all the different threads pulled together. Miller and his team felt real, full of engaging characters and not one of the now jaded cliched maverick loner alcoholic detectives in sight - just humans doing their best in a difficult job.
Now for the politics: The fact that this novel (using factual information) highlights the impacts that years of austerity have had on public services and the impact that the brutally heartless approach, sanctions and cuts of the DWP have had on the most vulnerable in society and thus on the services left to pick up the pieces, only added to the realism and relevance of this book for me, in fact without seeing the following warning advert I may not have picked up this corker of a book : DUE TO THE FACTS THAT THIS NOVEL CENTRES AROUND, IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR ARDENT UK CONSERVATIVE SUPPORTERS. (As the inconvenient, awkward truth behind the fiction will spoil the story and also the reader's sense of virtue and righteousness.)
I'm definitely going to read the first books in the series and am hoping that the political realism and compassion that was a major feature in this particular episode of Miller and his team is echoed in the earlier books.
a great read , i love the characters that suttie creates , the pace of his books is always good at some points it did feel that i was reading a political pamphlet but if you read on its a great yarn
so staff from the DWP are being attacked and they cant work out why. so in steps miller and his team and they are led on a merry dance
Anyone who has a social conscience about the plight of people on any type of benefits and the stigma associated with it should read this book. The government should be truly ashamed. Another cracking detective novel
I've given this book 5 stars. Absolutely fantastic book. I've read all 5 books which are all brilliant, I'm in a situation of having benefits stopped for the most daft reasons so I was even more enthralled in reading it. Fantastic writing .I would definitely recommend this book and the previous ones. Thank you Steven suttie for a great collection of brilliant reads.
This series is a great read. Miller is an admirable character. The subject in this novel is hard to comprehend, that a government could treat its citizens in such a manner. Is it being resolved?
As usual, Steven Suttie has come up with a brilliant DCI Miller read. But & it's a big but, if I wanted to read about someones rantings about a political party, I would buy a book about this subject. I totally agree that you need a certain amount of background, into why these attacks were taking place, maybe a page or two, but there were far too many pages ranting on about the tories & what their policies have done. And before you say that my comments are those of a typical Tory supporter, you are wrong!!! I am not a supporter. I just like the books that I read to supply me with escapism not political rubbish.
I enjoyed this story just as much as the previous Miller books.........and not being a Brit, I found the political slant a little overbearing at time. I share the sense of injustice at the facts that are presented within the fictional framework, but I really felt like I was reading through the minutes of a political rally at times. The story is great, pretty raw and gritty at times, but that is also real life. It’s just that if the author wants to appeal to a greater audience outside of Great Britain, I would suggest that he use less of the story as a grandstand for his political viewpoints.....even though they may be quite valid in other countries as well as his own.
The author has managed to interweave a very poignant plot that intertwines with one of the basic issues in most societies today: Rich Vs. Poor, Us Vs. Them, the Haves Vs. the Have Nots. The greed of the rich and powerful desiring even more riches and more power rings clear in our world and through the pages of this book. As well as a captivating investigation into a series of brutal murders, this novel serves as a commentary of our modern society. This is an excellent read with many great discussion points.
The fifth in the DCI Miller series. In much the same vein as his previous novels in the DCI Miller series, the actual plot is very commendable. A man is on the rampage, attacking civil servants who work for the DWP, maiming them so badly, they will be forever disabled. There is a warning at the outset suggesting if your a Tory loving individual you’ll likely as not be outraged by the content of the book. For me, the use of the novel to rant about politics totally detracts from the storyline. I’m all for highlighting social injustices but not in this way.
Wow! What an addictive read. The saddest thing is that even though the story is fictitious a lot of the information within the book is based on true FACT. It really is an education into how this toffee nosed government run the country . If you are unsure just read it you w/o be be able to put it down! Thanks Steven another excuse not to do my housework can't wait for book 6?
Why 5 star's this book is definitely the bone truth about England and is worthy of my rating. Steven has successfully covered all the problems that unemployed people and disabled people in the UK endure and not forgetting the homeless endure under the Concervative Party that is supposedly running this beautiful country. I recommend this book to those that do not support the conservative party and have some compassion.
I’ve read the whole DCI Miller series and enjoyed them. The first -Pop - who gets a mention in this book was by far the best, in my opinion. However, I have enjoyed them all and this one was not a let down. Steven raises very strong political opinions within the book and is obviously not a fan of the Government. Whatever your political preference are, this shouldn’t spoil the reading of this book. I would give this 4.5 out of 5.
Steven Suttie THE FINAL CUT When people start being attacked DCI Miller and his team get involved. The persons that have been attacked work in the DWP office. Is this attacks against the poorer people it certainly seems so. If you like these type of books you will love this one. The author does not mess about and tells it how it is. I loved the pace from start to finish 5* 29 November 2017.
Another great book from Steven Suttie in this series. Living in Australia I never realised how the welfare system is in the UK and this book was a shock to me. The story is well written and the characters believable and if you haven't read this series from the start, I would recommend it as you'll be hooked if you do love your English police series like I do!
Another brilliant book by Steve Suttie. Keeps you on edge and eager to read what happens next. Definitely not a read for conservative voters as it is very damming of the present government. Written in 2017 the events that he so clearly outlines about the DWP and government are still the same if not worse now in 2020! An excellent read as always and I can’t wait to start his next book DCI Miller 6
GAUN YERSEL SON! Gaun yersel: Scottish, meaning: Shout of encouragement, insinuating the recipient needs no assistance to perform his attempted feat. Absolutely brilliant, should be essential reading along with Ken Loach film 'I, Daniel Blake'. Tells it as it is, DWP is a disgrace. Suttie recommends googling DWP deaths, this shit is real folks. Thanks Steven.
Have enjoyed previous books but this was so hard to read, I don't buy a fiction book to have the authors political viewpoints rammed down my throat ( no I am not a Tory supporter ) stick to the story.
A great story, up to his usual standards, all the locations exist and the characters on the media have names consistent with local press and tv reporters so adding to the reality, can't wait for the next book due out soon.
Oh, I’m hooked... love these books - so topical, so clever and so much fun to read. It amazes me how the plot comes at you from the sidelines and wallops you with its originality. This book was a bit more political but that was matched by the integrated storyline. Now I need number 6....
Excellent - i have enjoyed all the DCI Miller books but this one was exceptional. The political undertones really struck a chord with me, as a 'victim' of the DWP reforms. The perpetrator, when disovered, reveals an unexpected twist!!

Another great book in the series, it is highly charged and very political, I do however think the balance is spot on. I can't imagine a worse situation than having to fight for a pittance and the unjust situations that are highlighted bring it home to me of how lucky I have been.
Another fast paced very believable story from Stephen Suttie. Thought provoking as previous books have been. No holds barred tell it like it is writing. Thank you again.
An enjoyable page turner with some food for thought. Great realistic cast of characters and a contemporary storyline. I liked the swearing especially the worst one!
Warning noted but “if you repeat a lie often enough”. etc. A vehicle for unbalanced political arguments with a shallow story line and conclusion lacking in imagination.
I enjoy this series but felt that in this book the author focussed too much on his political stance that the government has caused massive problems for the poor.
Great read, certainly changed my views on the government, interesting eye opening events, cannot believe these actually happened in this day & age. Conservative party shame on you !!!
