This short anthology of horror comics by women is worth reading just for the introduction. The story of how this anthology came to be illustrates the frustrations creatives face when threatening (even slightly) the status quo.
The eleven stories collected have drastically different visual styles, but all of them feel like the early work of their creators, with maybe one exception.
Two stories in particular stand out. Jennifer Lewis’s Toothless has an atmospheric surreal feel and is genuinely creepy. Lewis’s layouts are strong and utilize collage to build beautifully composed pages. The story has the flow of a grim nursery rhyme and is my favorite.
Lindsay Moore and Marian Photinakis give us the simple, but poignant story The Procedure. I suggest reading this and the anthology’s introduction together.
I am glad I read Dark Lady, as a horror fan and as someone dedicated to seeing new voices enter the genre I love. I look forward to seeing more developed work coming out of Hell Cat Press in the future.
