I've already fallen in love with this new series. These three sisters are tight and this book mainly focuses on the eldest Madelyn. Maddie and her sisters are starting over in a new school without a women's baseball team so they join the boys..yeah that goes down well. Holden (think arrogant jock..at least on the surface) is intrigued by Maddie so to annoy her goes after her sister. Will it be sisters before misters or trouble? What's going on in this small town with thefts and assault on the school grounds? Is it the obvious bad boy family or someone else? A little bit of mystery, drama and not too much teen angst made for a brilliant easy to read story. I'm really looking forward to the other sister's stories.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
I was so curious about this new series by Jordan Ford and quickly after I received my copy I started reading. I like the set-up for this trilogy with each book focusing one a different sister and after finishing this one I can only say I am even more curious about the other two sisters books. We got some glimpses of what they are up to here and I even have guesses about who they'll end up with.
Curveball was a great start of this series. I liked getting to meet the sisters, this town and the school. Curveball follows the story of the Barlow Sisters who move to a new town. They have some trouble getting used to a new house and town. They love playing baseball and want to join the local baseball team, but that turns out to be a boys only team. They try and fit anyway and I liked how we get to see a bit about the sport as well. There's also a bit of mystery surrounding school goods that get stolen, which was interesting too. I liked the twist at the end.
I have to admit that at first I had a bit of a hard time liking the two main characters of this book. I am glad to say that changed as the book progressed and I really enjoyed this book. Holden is the perfect guy, captain of the baseball team, good looks and popular. And as Maddie call him, he's a bit of cardboard cutout. But it turns out there's much more to Holden than meet the eye and I liked getting to know the real Holden and seeing him trust Maddie with the truth.
Madie was refreshingly honest and direct, but I also found her a bit too fiery at first. She easily jumps to conclusions about Holden, but it was great to see when she realizes she might've been wrong about him and falls even harder for him. I also liked how protective she is of Chloe and it's obvious these sisters care about each other.
The romance starts off as a bit of a hate to love romance. Maddie can't stand Holden and gets angry at him and he likes her fiery side. I didn't really care for that part, but once Holden starts opening up to Maddie and shows her his trues elf, I was totally onboard with the romance. They made for a great couple, although I would've liked a bit more scenes between the two getting to know each other. I really liked the scene where they visit his grandfather. While there is little drama, there is this thing that keeps Holden and Maddie apart for a big part of the book. It felt a bit forced, but also in character. I am glad it didn't drag on too long.
To summarize: Curveball was a fun start of this new series. It has a solid romance, three sisters, some teenage problems, sports and a bit of mystery. I wasn't sure if I would like Maddie and Holden at first as Holden seemed a bit too perfect and Maddie a bit too fierce and she judged him a bit too harsh. But that all changes as the book progressed and it was great to see Maddie get to know the real Holden. I just would've liked to see a bit more scenes of them getting to know each other as now most of that happens on one evening. I didn't really care for the thing that kept them apart, but it did feel in character and it didn't drag on too long. I had fun reading this one and the glimpses we got of the two other girls have me really curious about their stories!

Bring on the BARLOW SISTERS! After reading Jordan Ford's last trilogy (The Brotherhood) I think it was only fitting for her to explore into the world of sisterhood! Ever since she first announced her plans for this trilogy several months ago I've been hooked on her concept of three sisters learning to navigate in a new town while finishing out their high school baseball careers on the boy's team. Once again the amazingly talented Jordan Ford has surprised her readers with this brand-new twist on a sports romance that is relatable to all females.
Right from the very beginning my full attention was captured and I couldn't put this story down because I needed to know how everything played out! Maddie Barlow's character is so relatable that you can't help but instantly connect with her. She is one of those characters that sacrifices her happiness for her loved ones and understands that she needs to be strong for her sisters in their move to Armitage! Holden on the other hand is someone who you "hate to love." At the start of this story I thought he was a complete jerk, but eventually he wiggled his way into my heart and stayed there until the very end! I love when we get one of those redeemable hero's that make our hearts flutter.
This story was filled with sweet YA romance and a little bit of suspense (we all love our suspense, at least I do) to keep readers on the edge of the seat until the very end! I cannot wait until Max and Chloe's stories release in the next few months because I am in love with these sisters!
Blurb: CURVEBALL - Barlow Sisters #1 Maddie Barlow is used to being in control. So when her father uproots their family to the small, troubled town of Armitage, just six months from her high school graduation, she’s struggling to cope. Worse yet, he insists the coach makes room for all of his daughters on the boys’ baseball team. The close-knit Armitage Pitbulls don’t want three girls messing up their season, and they’re going to do everything in their power to make sure the girls don’t make them look bad…especially Holden Carter—the smooth, good-looking captain of the team.
Maddie takes one look at him and knows he’s trouble. In spite of her instant attraction she’s determined to put the arrogant jock in his place, which is made doubly hard when her younger sister starts crushing on the guy. In an attempt to protect her sister from getting hurt, Maddie puts herself between them, only to face a curveball she never saw coming.
Her attraction to Holden is not supposed to turn into more…and when it does she’s caught between hurting her sister and turning her back on the first guy she’s ever really fallen for. But a forbidden romance is not the only curveball Maddie and Holden have to dodge, because things aren’t what they seem in the quaint town of Armitage…and they’re about to work out that discovering the truth can be way more dangerous than living a lie.
The Barlow Sisters have a great life in Columbus. Twins Maddie and Max, and younger, by a year, sister Chloe. They are not only sisters, but best friends. They are also gorgeous, kick-ass baseball players. Maddie is the tough sister, protective and strong. Max is easy going, focused on her baseball. Chloe is sweet beyond words. Everything changes in the blink of an eye when their dad takes a promotion as sheriff in the little town of Armitage, California across the country.
Obviously the girls are shaken. Maddie and Max are entering their last semester of high school. They have to leave their friends, boyfriends, and most importantly their team behind. Armitage is nothing like home. The town is run-down and the people seem to be closed off. There is too much crime for such a small town, even at the high school. One theft after another. And to top it all off, the high school only has a boy's baseball team. A team that does not want the girls. Holden Carter, the team's captain makes that clear. He's going to be a problem, in more ways than one. Chloe is immediately smitten. Maddie is infuriated by the gorgeous man, but can't get him out of her mind. Only Max is unfazed by Holden, but she's not acting herself either. She's secretive and disappears regularly. This new town is wreaking havoc on the Barlow sister's.
This is a book of false images. Everyone is putting up a front, hiding secrets. There is unnecessary pain because of all the secrets. So much insecurity, uncertainty, and false-assumptions. Maddie with her forthright honesty could not have been placed in a less fitting environment. Holden is the king of false fronts. He has the Carter image to maintain and keeping secrets is his family specialty. Can he let his guard down and show the real Holden. He and Maddie could have something deep and meaningful. Or will he keep his image as golden boy and settle for something light with her sweetest sister Chloe? Will one of the girls get their heart broken? What is going on with Max? Is she in trouble? (I don't think so). And what about the thefts?
Curveball is a great start to the Barlow Sister's series. It manages to tie in baseball, a fantastic high-school romance, and a mystery. The three stories are beautifully woven together into a very entertaining read. The sister bond is amazing. I loved, loved, loved the girl's love for one another. This is a book I wholly recommend; you will enjoy it!
Simply Brilliant. This new YA standalone starter in the Barlow sisters trilogy had me addicted from the very first page. Maddie, her twin Max and their slightly younger sister Chloe have just moved to Armitage for the final six months of their senior year. They are all baseball players and they immediately throw a spanner in the works when they are added to the line up of the all boys team. Holden Carter the captain is not impressed, however as annoyed as he is, he cannot fight his growing attraction to Maddie. She calls him on his antics and he wants to prove to her that he is a good guy.
Sparks fly all round and their growing mutual attraction is beautiful to witness. Holden really is a sweetheart underneath his tough guy arrogant persona and Maddie helps break these walls he has up. However, something sinister is afoot and blame is immediately laid on town bad boy Vincent Mancini, is he guilty without even proving his innocence? I loved all the mystery and intrigue along the way. The bonds that these sisters share was very heartfelt and even though they are close, they were still keeping their own secrets from eachother. Loved this first instalment and can't wait for the others. I was fortunate enough to recieve an ARC and this is my honest review.
~~I received this in exchange for my honest opinion~~
When your dad uproots your whole life 6 months before you graduate high school, you don't want to be happy. You don't see the opportunity that may lay ahead, all you see is your girls baseball team moving on without you, your friends at your previous school forgetting about you. All you want to do is finish your 6 months and go to college. Maybe play baseball as well for the new school, that is, if the boys will let you.
Jordan hits it out of the park with this book! Not only has she taken 3 girls that are really good at playing baseball, but she has them playing baseball on a team. I love reading her work. I never know what I am going to get when I read her work. I am never disappointed at all!
Going into this book I wasn't sure what to really expect but what I got ended up being so much more! I really liked how close the sisters were and how they had each other's backs. Plus they are some tough girls for sure. This book had it all. It had the playfulness along with the Romance and of course some sadness and anger mixed into one. I also loved how the mystery and suspense was thrown in there as well. I can say I didn't see that twist coming. Definitely recommend reading this even if your into more of the NA books as well as YA.
When Jordan Ford says she's writing a new sports series, you get excited, because she does it so good that you don't care if you're into that sport specifically, you just know the story and the romance are going to be top shelf. She thows in a little mystery and some drama, giving us an all around fun read. The characters are lovable and relatable, making you wish they were real friends. I'm excited to read the sisters' books.
Jordan Ford did it again. I was absolutely captivated by this book and read it cover to cover without a break.
I’m hooked on the Barlow sisters! I loved reading about Maddie and Holden fighting their attraction for each other and trying not to hurt Chloe in this situation.
Armitage has been facing some small town robberies and even an assault on school grounds. Is it obviously the boy from the bad family in town? Or is someone else pulling one over on Armitage?
I also can’t wait to see what Max and Chloe will have up their sleeves in the future. Armitage isn’t going to know what to do with these Barlow sisters!!
I voluntarily offered my review for an advanced copy of this book!
I have loved everything this author has written in her NA and YA Genre and couldn't wait to read her new Barlow Sister's series.
Curveball is first book of the series. This is Maddie & Holden's story. All three of the sisters are best friends, Maddie, Max and Chloe. Maddie & Max are twins & Chloe is a year younger. The sisters grew up playing baseball in Columbus but in their Junior & Senior year, their dad had received a promotion and so he moved the family to Armitage California.
The story goes from their and the new school at Armitage High. Their dad gets them to try out with the Pitbulls, an all guy team full of hotness & arrogance. This gives Maddie, Maxi and Chloe somewhat of an incentive to show them what they can do.
Holden, their captain of the Pitbulls, have a problem with the girls joining the team and him and his best friend Luke try to sabotage their playing from the get go. Holden, them realizes these girls can play and the fiestiness of Maddie is getting to him. Can he trust her with his secrets? Can Maddie let someone as arrogant and bossy as Holden in her heart?
This book at first didn't draw me in as much as the other books I have read from this author, but after 40% of the book, it got better and enjoyed the rest! I cannot wait for Max's story!
Hate to say this but I didn’t like this as much as I thought I would. The hero was a coward, and didn’t admit to his mistake till the end of the book. Then when he did apologize it didn’t feel sincere to me, it felt like he was just trying to get what he wanted and he knew he would have to apologize to chloe to get it. The “mystery” in the book was obvious from the beginning and I wished that I would have seen more of a connection between Maddie and Max.
Absolutely LOVE Jordan Ford!! I don't know how she came up with this story of amazing sisters, but to add the twists and turns here and there is great!
The Barlow sisters are taken for a whirlwind ride when their father uproots them to the only home they have known in Columbus, Ohio to this somewhat run down town on the other side of the country. Things seem a little off when they get there and not everyone is who they appear to be. There are untold stories, facades, and dirty little secrets lurking around every corner it seems. Not to mention, the town seems to have this "good ole boy" system going on. What happens when these three girls try to get on an all boys baseball team? Do they make the cut? Or do they deal with the fact that the coach thinks they should be on a girls softball team instead? Read and find out!
The three Barlow sisters have their world turned up side down when their father accepts a job as police chief of Armitage, California. Six months before twins Maddie and Max graduate they are halfway across the country attending a new high school. Unexpected attraction and a crush will cause a rift between Maddie and Chloe. Holden Carter, the cause of the rift, will find out that his best friend isn't the person Holden thought he was, and Maddie will become his confidante. Maddie and Holden are sweet characters who will have life throw them a curveball, but they find in each other that one friend/love they can trust. This is a fascinating read with complex, angst filled teenagers and an exciting plot with unexpected and surprising twists. Fantastic book, I loved it and look forward to the next book in this series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.
I really liked the start to this new series. I appreciated the attitude of Maddie towards her sisters. She wanted to put them first and cared about them but she also wanted to allow them freedom in their lives as well. Holden was a great guy in general however I feel his hide who I really am personality was never really resolved. I'm hoping we see that clear up a bit more in the following books. I liked that the girls were real athletes however none of them had to scream girl power from the rooftops either. You can be feminine while also being a great athlete. You can have multiple interests and not be closed into a die hard feminist box. I feel like this story really captured that idea perfectly. I look forward to the next installment 😃
Curveball was a short sweet read with lots of baseball and a touch of mystery. I really liked the sisterly bond in this book. You can really see how much the girls really care for and look out for each other. The mystery element introduced was a great edition as well. That really kept me on my toes and I was able to predict the culprit in the end. My favourite part was when the Barlow sister showed the all boys team that girly can play just a hard as boys can (and sometimes better!) I'm curious to see what is going on with Max. Look out for book 2!
I give this 3.5 stars. Maddie and her two sisters move to a small town and they are immediately the girls who become a threat to the baseball team. These girls know baseball and love to play. They are also beautiful and catch the attention of the star pitcher Holden. Holden figures out a plan try to keep them on the bench for their season. Unfortunately things don't go his way. Between the girls actually knowing how to play and the thefts happening in their school and around town, it is proving to be more for him and the girls handle.
This was absolutely adorable. You can't hold it against Holder because he's so cute and so sexy and so good, like really really really good :)))))))))))))))) I loved Maddie and him. I loved the sisters and the interactions between them. I can't wait to read about Max's secrets in the next book and of course Vincent and Chloe will be epic, I already have a mild crush on him. Thank you for this MS. Ford.
The first in this series, it is a great launch. Holden and Maddie were amazing together. Holden was such a good guy behind the whole persona. I loved the ending and I can’t say I expected how the mystery part of it would end. Chloe was a great sister who was truly the bigger person. Maddie was so responsible. I loved her character and the way that she was built in the story.
I received a review copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I've always loved the idea that girls should be able to play on a boys team when it comes to certain sports. Do I think they should be on a football field? Really depends on the girl and what position, but baseball? That is definitely one where I think girls can excel. As such, I was really excited to read this. A story of three sisters raised to play ball on a girls team who move to a new town and shake things up in more ways than one. As expected, the boys are not thrilled with the idea of girls joining their team and possibly making them look bad. Especially the two hottest, most popular guys at the school. That doesn't mean the girls back down and Maddie is the oldest and always trying to look out for her sisters. Things get a little complicated when she finds herself attracted to one of the guys, along with one of her sisters. When a variety of items start to go missing, there are some who are quick to point the finger at the new kids in town and Maddie gets caught in the middle.
If I am being honest, the start of the book was a little rocky for me. The flow was kind of abrupt. I'm not explaining this right, but it just felt terse. And Holden was really hard to like. Extremely cocky and full of himself. Maddie was a bit too mean as well. As the book progressed, those things eased up and the story began to grab my attention with the intrigue surrounding Max, and trying to determine who the thief was. I have to admit that I did figure it out sooner than expected, but that is probably because that character was another one that I found unbearable. So far, Max is my favorite sister, the one that I am really liking...even with the mystery surrounding her and I cannot wait to read her story.
This is definitely a YA book with all of the drama of high school, and first love. Add the upheaval of having to move in the middle of your high school years, and to a small town to boot, and many a teenager could relate.
Cute small town romance with a touch of mystery. Well not a lot of mystery for my cause I figured it out like 20% in but that's beside the point. Holden was extremely annoying at first, the cocky type I am not a fan of but somehow he put his shit together. He was still cocky but in a less obnoxious way.
I was privileged enough to receive a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
I love Jordan Ford's books and I absolutely fell in love with the Barlow sisters. The interaction between Maddie and her sisters in on point. Holden is a typical teenage guy. He does stupid things. but I love Holden and Maddie together. I loved how Maddie tries to deny herself to keep her sister happy but in the end Chloe doesn't hold it against her. I was glad the little mystery was solved but I can't wait to see how the bigger one turns out. I am really looking forward to both Max and Chloe's story. Well done Ms. Ford, well done!
I can't believed how pathetic the mc was. I mean she gets assaulted by her guy's best friend and she thought bruises fade 's so it's okay. I don't see why the two sisters confronted the same guy on their own instead of reporting it to the dad. The h was a joke too cause he tried to ignore that his BF beat his women and instead accused the h of lying. Can't stand the characters. DNF...
I think I'm way too old for this book. I didn't check the genre before starting, maybe I should have. It just was there. I didn't feel anything, i didn't get excited by it, I didn't commiserate with anyone. I finished it because I started it. Others might have better luck with it.
Maddie and Holden sitting in a tree.... Really cool high school book with an intriguing story. Three sisters show up at a new high school and make the boys baseball team. The author cleverly weaves a current story all the while introducing characters to find in subsquent books. Nicely done!!
Not totally sure how to rate this yet, but here's my review anyways. I picked this one up on a whim because it was free via kindle unlimited, and sometimes that "free" gets me. I've found some good books on kindle unlimited and I've found some doozies. This was in the middle. Was it the worst book I've ever read? No. Not really. Like. I liked the story well enough. For a light read to just kind of never dig too deep into anything, it was good. I mean, I solved the mystery ages before anyone even considered the possibility that Vincent Mancini might not be the thief. Well. Maybe. I definitely had it pegged ages before Maddie solved the mystery. It's not like it was that difficult. It was almost spelled out. I knew immediately that Maddie and Holden were into each other. That was spelled out. In crayon. Or spray painted on a water tower. Completely obvious. Holden was a dick. Like. There's no way to sugarcoat that. And the sister drama was frustrating as hell. I will admit that I've never had sisters, but one time my former best friend started texting a guy that i was interested in, and then she became interested in him, but then decided to not be interested in him anymore. I eventually got over that crush (he was a douchebag, too, and I was the exact same as I am now... always intrigued by texting people and accidentally oversharing/being annoying as all hell.), but the fact that my own then bff had to nose in on him still bit. If I must think back and compare, that boy was definitely a Patrick. Not a loss, but still not exactly the nicest thing my former best friend ever did. So. Like. I get exactly how Chloe must feel when her own sister starts digging Holden. I joked about starting a drinking game based on the amount of times that Holden winked and smirked. And then snickered came up and I was like "How drunk do I want to get?" I had fun reading, I really did, but I had a few complaints. Most importantly, this read like it belonged on wattpad. You know those books. The ones you've read because you're bored and have a wattpad account. They're about the good girl and the bad boy. This felt like that. Except for it was the good girl and the douchebag. Holden turned out to have a hidden side, which I'm not entirely sure why he hid it except that teenagers are a bunch of dicks who will eat each other alive for being different. But. Like. He still involved secrets and sneaking around and lying. That he dragged Maddie into. Or Maddie dragged him into? I don't know. It seemed a little annoying that Maddie was lying to her sisters about him, but I guess when baby sister has a crush on your future boyfriend, things get a little hairy. But. The amount of times that smirked and winked and snickered came up made me wonder if the author actually has seen smirking and heard snickering. I dunno. It felt very overused.
In the end, I liked it. But it could use some help.
