From New York Times bestseller Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.

A fisherman’s daughter.

The governor’s son.

Two very different worlds.

In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman’s daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of North Carolina’s governor at a fancy party where she’s working.

Laire, who wants so much more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.

Years later, when fate leads them back to one another, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

She was an unlikely obsession, this girl he’d known for such a small amount of time. Were he asked under fire, he couldn’t possibly account for the depth and certainty of his feelings for her.

I am so happy that I didn't give up on this book! It starts off really slow in the beginning and I planned to just skim the heck out of it to get to the end, but once I got to about the 30% point, indifference and boredom quickly turned to love and complete captivation. DON’T SPEAK is a modern take on one of my favorite fairytales, ”The Little Mermaid” It is quite a lengthy book but once the pace picks up, I promise you that you’ll end up devouring this book like I did! I just couldn’t put this one down and it is definitely one of my top favorites by Katy Regnery!

DON’T SPEAK is the story of first love and forbidden love - how two people are able to look past social barriers and prejudices to be with each other. But is love enough when there is so much stacked against them?

 photo Dont Speak Teaser 5_zpsqogh3kti.jpg

Laire Cornish is a local girl from Corey Island, a small fisherman town in North Carolina. Her family and many of the inhabitants of this small town have lived there for generations. She’s the youngest of three sisters and is the most dutiful daughter. Always going out of her way to help her father when he comes home bone tired from being out all day fishing. She offers to take a shipment of blue crabs up to the house of a client on the mainland so that her father can get some much-needed rest. It is at this gorgeous and expansive estate, that she meets the most beautiful man her eyes have ever seen!

Erik Rexford is what you would consider royalty of North Carolina. His father is the Governor and their family is one of the wealthiest in the area. He is immediately captivated by the beautiful girl with strawberry blond hair and freckles. Her innocence is refreshing and it also seems to put him under her spell. Erik is tenacious in his pursuit of Laire! Laire gets a job at a local restaurant on the mainland, which she had to lie about to her father because it is frowned upon for her to want to leave their hometown. But Laire wants more out of life. She wants to go to college, become a fashion designer, and leave her small hometown behind. Working at the restaurant also makes it easier for Erik and Laire to spend time together.

 photo Dont Speak Teaser 4_zpsoturijrv.jpg

Erik and Laire keep their relationship a secret because they know their families would not approve and would end up doing everything they can to tear them apart. So the two spend whatever stolen moments they can get together. But then a terrible tragedy and an ugly lie end in heartbreak and years of separation for the young lovers.

Almost six years pass before the two cross paths again which seems to be fated. A lot has changed for Erik and Laire. Old feelings of betrayal and anger are still very prevalent. Can these two find their way back to each other or is it just too late?

 photo Dont Speak Teaser 2_zpscbtjrmfk.jpg

What a beautiful love story! My heart broke for Erik when he was fighting so hard to hold on to Laire and not having any clue as to why she was pushing him away. This character was INCREDIBLE!

DON’T SPEAK is currently available! Make sure you add it to your TBRs!

➦DNF 60%. Looks like I'm in the minority here... This book wasn't for me. I've only read one other book by Katy Regnery in this series and I loved it. This one, however, was a miss.

➦I am a big fan of "years later" romances. You know, those where the main characters get separated while children/teens and meet again when they are adults. This premise was one of the main reasons I picked this book up.

➦My main problem was the pace of the story and the length of the book. I am NOT a patient reader. By the time I got to the middle of the novel I've felt like I've already read a full length book. I didn't really understand why half the book needed to be spent on the "before." I got exhausted and lost interest. If you don't mind slow paced books then you might enjoy it.

Overall Opinion: I really enjoyed this one. I love a second chance romance, and this was done really well IMO. I liked both characters. I connected to each of them, and I also felt their connection to each other. I was rooting for their HEA and was so happy when I got it. My only gripe is that I wanted some more time at the end with them as a happy couple, and with them achieving their goals and "making their own rules". I know that the safety gang has had issues with this author in the past, but this should be completely safe for all of you! We even have a long separation with both of them being celibate -- which I know you guys love ;)

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Laire and Erik's story. They meet one day when Laire is doing a crab delivery to his summer house. She is the extremely sheltered fisherman's daughter, and he is the governor's son -- so needless to say they have totally different lives. That doesn't stop Erik in his pursuit of Laire, because he is drawn her her in a way that he's never felt before. They start a whirlwind summer secret romance that ends with both of them having a broken heart. They are reunited years later, and all the truths come out for them to work through...and they do get a HEA ending.

POV: This alternated between focusing on Laire and Erik in 3rd person narrative.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. The ending did feel a little rushed to me, but that might just be because I'm greedy. Otherwise, I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No. They are instantly connected, but take a while to develop stronger feelings.

H rating: 4.5 stars. Erik. I liked him a lot. He was understanding and patient with the h, and I appreciated how he dealt with his mom.

h rating: 4 stars. Laire. I liked her. She was so incredibly sheltered, but she still recognized that she wanted more from her life.

Sadness level: Moderate. I teared up a few times, but not so much I needed tissues.

Push/Pull: Mild

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: Not really.

OW/OM drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had pretty good closure with a HEA ending. I would've liked some more time with them as an official couple in the end though.

How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

Beautiful luv story.

This is the first time I 've read anything from this author. I actually doing know how I this book was going to work for me but I have to say it won't be the last book I read from this author it was amazing. The story was just beautiful heart breaking in parts but beautiful. The luv between the characters was so strong even after spending years a part and thinking bad of each other. It was still strong they were just so meant to be they had to get there HEA. I know this book is a modern fairy tale of The Little Mermaid but I really luvd the way the author put in lil bit that reminded me of the fairy tale. The Little Mermaid is one of my favourite stories as a child and now I can say that this is going to one as an adult.

I really enjoyed the characters in this. My heart went out to Laire she was so naive about life outside of the little island of Corey she needed someone like Erik to show her how there was more to life than little Corey. I do think that the characters were similar in some ways they both kept secrets from there family's to protect each which did happen to go against them. But they had to do what they had to do to get the most out of an amazing summer together.

Erik is very sexy but very sweet the way he dealt with Laire was sweet. I did find it funny him explaining stuff to Laire in parts with her not really knowing much about the opposite sex I could find how uncomfortable he was but he did deal with it well. This made me really like him and his character a lot.

Laire is a really good character to. It was great to see how she dealt with everything that was thrown at her. I did get angry in parts with her family. They were just so meant and made her feel like crap. I'm just glad she did get on with things and didn't let her family get in the way even if it did mean it came with consequences. It was great to see Laire grow from this naive girl to a strong woman that stuck up for herself. I was cheering her on throughout the book.

I would highly recommend this book. Once I started I couldn't put it down. Like I said was sure if I'd like it but ended up luvin it. Can't wait to read more of this authors work.

Don't Speak was a beautiful, touching and inspiring second chance love story about a rich, charming and priviliged boy, a Governor's son, and a simple, warm-hearted and unspoilt girl, a fisherman's daughter. Although their backsgrounds and believes couldn't be more different from each other, they have one thing in common: both are prisoners of their families' expectations for their futures. They desperately want to escape those chains and pursue their own goals and dreams which would never be approved by them.

Laire Cornish is living a sheltered life on Corey Island with her father and two older sisters. One day she would love to attend college and make a career as a fashion designer instead of settling down with a local boy and having his kids like everyone else.

Erik Rexford is coming from an old-money and highly influential family. He is expected to go to law school and work for his father's firm. It doesn't really matter if he wants it since a life like his one always comes with duties and commitments.

When a beautiful red haired island girl arrives at his family's mansion in Buxford one summer to bring a delivery, he can't but ask her out on a date. Laire is refreshingly different from the girls he is used to. She is timid and inexperienced which makes him feel a surge of protectiveness for her. They will spend several weeks getting to know each other, slowly but surely falling in love. Erik awakes a desire in Laire she never knew existed. For the first time in her life she is ready to break some rules.
Unforseen circumstances are going to tear them apart. When they finally see each other again after 6 long years they will not only find out which secrets and deceitful actions have lead to their separation but that the love they once felt for each other is still beating inside their hearts refusing to let them move on.

"I love you. I never stopped."
"I love you too. Even when I hated you, I still loved you."

Laire and Erik have been two amazing lead characters. I enjoyed witnessing those two young people experiencing love and forging a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding. You could literally feel the butterflies in their bellies every time they touched, kissed or shared an intimate moment together.

Katy Regnery has chosen a magical scenery as the background for this epic love story. With much care and attention to detail like the authentic accents of the characters, their respective lifestyles as well as the precise description of various locations she demonstrates excellent and spell-binding storytelling. She painted all those vivid pictures in my head which made me feel like I was in the middle of this story and not just a bystander. I can absolutely imagine Don't Speak made into a Hollywood movie one day.

I loved the key message the author wanted to convey with this story: If two people care about each other, it's up to them to make their own rules.

Don't Speak was another great modern fairytale by Katy Regnery inspired by the Little Mermaid. I highly recommend it and hope that you are going to give this fantastic book a chance. I promise you will not regret it.

Katy Regnery did it again!!! She blew my mind with another epic book that is going straight on my top favorite list. Being a huge fan of her modern fairytales I was very excited to see what she would make of this story and how some aspects from the little mermaid will be woven into the plot. I won't lie - I had very high expectations of this book! Did Katy manage to meet them? Yes, she absolutely did!

Don't Speak was a beautiful and touching story about love, family and second chances that made me reflect on many things. Sometimes I had to stop reading and close my eyes and let the tears flow because I was so overwhelmed with emotions. Katy's poignant and picturesque writing took me to places I've never been before but could clearly see in front of my eyes. I was fascinated by the fisherman folk and their live style and how she eloquently portrayed their traditions and moral standards.

Laire came from a very different world than Erik. She grew up sheltered and protected as a fisherman's daughter from an Outer Banks island that felt stuck in a world where a woman's reputation can easily be ruined by a wrong move. She wanted more from life than marry a guy and become a mother at a very young age, never getting a chance to see the world and persue a career.

Erik was the son of North Carolina’s governor and came from a rich family that cared more about keeping appearances than anything else. Growing up in such a shallow world, it's not a surprise that Erik was utterly fascinated with Laire. She was like a fresh breeze in a life that was already planned out for him since the day he was born. Her shyness and naiveté enchanted him and made him feel protective of her.

The way they truly, madly, deeply fell in love was nothing short of magical. Their kisses made me shiver and hold my breath because their feelings for each other were palpable on every page.

It's not a surprise that Katy broke my heart after the first part of the book. I felt Laire's and Erik's agony of losing each other like it was my own! Six years will pass until the former two lovers will see each other again. I strongly recommend you to prepare some tissues because these scenes will shatter you - I can tell!

While it looks like Laire has moved on with her life, Erik seems stuck in the past. The once compassionate and sensible young man has turned into an icy and distant adult, keeping his broken heart unavailable for any woman. But no matter how much both tried, they never got over each other.

"Don't you see? I loved you as a man, in every season, forever. And when I lost you, I lost...everythin'. There was a hole inside me the size of a crater...and nothin', nothin' on God's earth, could have filled it but you."

Is the universe giving the dark haired prince and his frackled mermaid a second chance? Will the reasons that brought them apart be revealed and finally resolved? In order to find out, you need to read this amazing book!

If you are looking for a brilliantly written story which is the perfect combination of sweet and angsty - then Don't Speak is the right book for you! 5+ stars for the unquestioned queen of modern fairytales: Katy Regnery.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I LOVE FAIRYTALE RETELLINGS!! I'm intrigued by an author's unique take and twist of a classic and I'm almost guaranteed a happily ever after. DON'T SPEAK was a true adaptation of The Little Mermaid and I was entertained with familiar characters playing similar roles.

The heroine wasn't Ariel. Her name was Laire and I thought it was a neat idea to create an anagram of the name. I must admit, I didn't quite catch it right at the beginning. She too had big hopes and dreamt of a different life away from where she grew up, a life beyond the only world she has ever known. Her imaginings were often met by the doubt and disapproval of her family but she refused to have their ignorance dictate her life.

Laire's prince was indeed a man named Erik, but he wasn't a real prince. He was the son of the governor and had lived a life of privilege. A life that was worlds apart from anything Laire had ever known. Despite the differences of their stations and the understood contempt of their families, Erik and Laire fell in love and spent a glorious summer together. Misunderstandings and betrayal tore them apart and it takes 6 years for fate to reunite them once again. Six years for destiny to allow questions to be answered, for wrongs to be made right, and for hearts to start to heal.

This story was heartbreaking and heartwarming, filled with drama, steam, and incredibly sweet moments. It was definitely a page turner (once I got past the beginning which was very slow paced) and I can admit that it was hard to put down and that I read it in one sitting! If you enjoy a solid retelling, a story about love and loss and love found again, a charming and delightful second chance romance, then DON'T SPEAK should be added to your TBR today!

I don’t know how I forgot the power of Katy Regnery’s words. Every single book of hers has been amazing and of course this one was no different. From their first meeting the connection between Laire and Erik was palpable and I could feel the chemistry leaping off the pages.

Firstly I have to say that if you aren’t a fan of insta love this isn’t the book for you so save yourself the money (unless you’re buying it for the charity then buy two and give one to a friend). Now of course I am a huge fan of insta love so this whole book was absolute perfection for me. And the insta love was told so beautifully and with so much depth of emotion I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

Laire and Erik weren’t just from different worlds it was almost like they were from a different time. And Katy told the book with so much detail and sensitivity it felt like I was visiting these places right along with the characters.

He’d never known anyone remotely like her, like this fisherman’s daughter from a world that was somehow frozen in time.

I fell in love with Erik from the first meeting. He wasn’t anything at all like I expected him to be, he was so much better than I could possibly dream and I loved that he fell in love so hard and was everything that Laire could need. He is absolutely on my book boyfriend list.

Laire was such a beautiful soul, I understood why Erik fell so hard for her and watching her fall right along with him was awesome. She was so sweet yet so kickass and strong. She went through so much and had to grow up so fast yet she still kept her sweetness and everything that was good about her.

This book was seriously amazing and you should absolutely one click it right now but be warned that you will need a box of tissues and once you pick it up you won’t physically be able to put it down so make sure you have the time to enjoy it.

5 "Kiss The Girl" Stars

Modern Day Fairytales are alive and well in the hands of Katy Regnery. Don't Speak has The Little Mermaid as it's point of reference. The characters, the scenery and the plot were all magnificently relatable to the original fairytale. I loved every word of this beautifully told modern fairytale.

Laird Cornish is an 18yr old girl who has grown up on a small remote island in the Carolinas. She comes from a fishing family and her life is very simple. But she wants more from life. Erik Rexford is 21yrs old and is the son of the Governor. He's from a life of privilege and his home in Bruxton is a summer home. Laird and Erik are from different worlds and should have never met but they did and nothing was ever the same for each of them. Life in the Outer Banks dictates that islanders and dingbatters(non residents of the islands) do not mix but sometimes fate has other ideas......"We make our own rules".

They fall madly in love but their ages, their families, and their differences plot against them. But can true love conquer all? Can your hopes and dreams survive when others plot to deceive? This story spans six years and we get to see how Laird and Erik grow up and tackle what is thrown at them.

Laird and Erik's story is a beautiful, sweet, heartbreaking, courageous, romantic love story. It is blissfully perfect. You will smile, you will laugh, you will cry and you will love. It is a super feel good story that includes sisters, a Sebastian, an Ursula and a King Triton. For those of you who love The Little Mermaid......this story will blow you away and even if you don't care for fairytales, this story will make you a fan of #ModernFairytales. Katy Regnery is a master of romantic stories full of love and HEAs.

I would like to mention that Katy has a very giving heart. With each Modern Fairytale, Katy donates part of her sales. In her words-
I want a portion of the proceeds from Don’t Speak to help women in need pursue a college education, so I am donating 15% of the gross royalties of its sales for February and March 2017 to P.E.O. International, an organization of which I am a proud member. P.E.O. sponsors no fewer than six international projects designed to assist women with their educational goals.

I really enjoy this series. It's so original, yet harkens back to your childhood and fairy tales. Every time I think I've found my favourite in this series, Katy delivers another spellbinding, heart-tingling read that leaves me loving them all!

This is a modern day telling of the Little Mermaid complete with a fisherman's daughter and royalty of a kind in the governor's son. Katy has a way with words. I was utterly and completely immersed in this tale. I truly felt like I was on the water with Laire and on the grounds of Utopia Manor with Erik.

This story has everything you want in a romantic tale. It's give you all the feels. It'll makes you laugh, cry and fall in love. It'll renew your faith in love conquering all and also give you the evil forces to rail against and a perfect couple to root for.

I highly recommend this book and this series!!

Lately I’ve been super lucky to have read a lot of great books back to back and this one was no exception. I was so excited to read this book, I’m a huge Little Mermaid fan (the Disney version) so ever since this book was announced I was looking forward to reading it. I have to admit I’ve never read a Katy Regnery book before, I know, I suck. I actually own most books in this series in both ebook and paperback but I just hadn’t had time to read one before, especially with my full blogging schedule. This will have to be rectified pretty soon, because this book was absolutely fantastic and I want to go back and read all books in this series!

So, you guys know I’m a sap. I love fairytales.  I love swoony heroes. I love strong willed heroines with goals and aspirations. And I love a good second chance romance. This book is all of that and more. Ahhh, I’m so happy I read this book. So so happy! This is such a clever play on The Little Mermaid. Once I started reading it I just couldn’t stop until I was done. I basically spent all day reading it and went through so many emotions and feels it’s not even funny!

“Had she known the ultimate cost of that simple glance heavenward, maybe she wouldn't have stopped. Maybe she would have just kept on walking with her head down. But fate held no warnings for Laire Maiden Cornish.”

Laire is the daughter of a fisherman from an island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She lives a very sheltered life in a very secluded place that has some strict values. It’s also a simple place, where most of the people just aspire to be married to locals and have kids and just settle. Laire lives with her dad and has 2 older sisters. Unlike her sisters and the people of her town, Laire has lots of aspirations, grand ones. She dreams of a different life, in a different place. She has big dreams and she struggles daily between trying to achieve those dreams and the love she has for her family.

Erik Rexford is from an entire different world than Laire. He’s the son of the governor of North Carolina. He’s gorgeous, rich, privileged and his future has already been mapped up for him. He’s also so much more than his family. I found him to be such a great guy, loving and caring and so hopeful. He’s full of life and hopes and dreams but is also trapped by his family, especially his controlling, despicable mother. As soon as he meets Laire, he is completely enchanted by her and his life changes forever.

“He felt almost frantic. This cannot be the end. No. Absolutely not. He wanted to hear her voice again—the strange, lovely lilt of her unusual accent. He wanted to know more about her: who she was, what her life was like. He wanted to figure out why he felt so drawn to her. He wanted to touch her, make her smile, make her laugh. There was too much he wanted, and without her digits, how could he get in contact with her? Fuck! He couldn't just let her go.”

The story is told in two parts. In Part I, Laire and Erik start a whirlwind secret summer romance. After all, they come from totally different worlds so they can’t be a public couple. They fall for each other hard and fast. I loved everything about their romance. The way he treated her, the way he teaches her things about his world, his patience. I loved her being so trusting, loved her being so naïve yet hopeful. Ah, I just loved everything. When they were together is as if they were in their own little world where nothing else matter, and they made their own rules.

"Darlin', I come here every night to be near you. I live for sunset like a vampire because that's when my heart starts beatin' each day, when I grab the keys to the car or boat and race over here to be with you. It makes me crazy all day to be away from you because I want more. I want to talk for hours and kiss you and find out what makes you laugh and . . . Damn it, Laire, this isn't enough."

"Just for today,"…"you're mine. And to me, Laire, you're perfect."

And somewhere along the way, between Rodanthe and Manteo, between fresh mahi-mahi and the Elizabethan Gardens, Erik Rexford, the prince of North Carolina, started to wonder if Laire Cornish, the commercial fishing princess of Corey Island, could love him someday—because everything about being with her felt awesome, felt predestined, felt so fucking right. With her sitting beside him, zooming up the Carolina coast on the most beautiful early-summer afternoon he could ever remember, he made a wish that he'd never, ever live another day of his life without her. He made a wish that she would, somehow, someway, be his forever.

Since this is a modern fairytale, you know something is bound to happen. The relationship ends in a heartbreaking way and Laire and Erik are forced apart! I have to admit, I cried during their separation, the FEELS, so strong. The Interlude! Be still my heart <3

"I wake up with a wet pillow and a heavy heart.

I long for the day when it doesn't hurt anymore.

I fear it too, because then you'll truly be gone and I'll be all alone. “

Part II is a second chance romance!!! Yay! So, you know, I was over the moon happy. I don’t want to spoil a thing. I loved how this turned out. I love Laire’s transformation and everything she did with her life. I loved that Erik’s feelings for her never changed, he never wavered. I loved when they finally reunited, the angst and the love. It was perfection. I love that it was all about them and the unnecessary drama is kept to a minimum.

I want you to know that I still love you. I want you to tell me there's still a chance for us. And then I want to carry you downstairs to my bed and make love to you the way we should have made love that night long ago.”

"No, baby," … "I didn't just love you as a kid or as a summer fling or as anything that was temporary. Don't you see? I loved you as a man, in every season, forever. And when I lost you, I lost . . . everythin'. There was a hole inside me the size of a crater. And . . ." He paused, flinching as he recalled the depths of his agony before reminding himself that now, here and now, the woman of his dreams was back in his arms. ". . . and nothin', nothin' on God's earth, could have filled it but you."

See? So swoony!!! Gosh, I’m so in love with this book. This was honestly an awesomely written, modern fairytale. Oh, and I also loved the secondary characters and how perfectly placed they were in the context of The Little Mermaid.

"I don't want to live another day without you. I don't want this life if you're not in it. I want to wake up next to you every mornin' and make love to you every night. And every moment in between, I want to know that you're mine and I'm yours and we're the only family we'll ever need."

Needless to say I loved everything about this book. It brought all the feels and was so beautiful, yet cleverly written. All the other books in this series have immediately jumped to the top of my TBR and I can’t wait to see which fairytale Katy will tell next. This was absolutely fantastic and I 1000% recommend!

“We are each born into a family, it's true, but Laire, who was born of the sea, and Erik, who was born of the land, had taken their destinies into their own hands, and, with their own rules, they had secured each other's forever.”

damn, I struggled with this one...*sigh*

I'm so late with my review *bows her head in shame* but I almost DNF-ed and I didn't want to judge the book by my current state of mind at the time of reading, so I paused it...and I will make my judgement according to my full experience once I gather my thought

I loved this book so much! I can't gush about it enough. It had so many of my favorite things to read about in a book! :)

✔ virgin heroine
✔ pregnancy
✔ secret baby child
✔ both celibate while separated

Really, this is such a fun book to read. I couldn't put it down and in fact stayed up late to read it. I wanted to finish it last night as I would never have made it through my work morning until lunch in order to finish the book.

This is a fairy tale retelling of The Little Mermaid, which is one of my favorites (the Disney version with the HEA). Laire (an anagram of Ariel) is the youngest daughter of a fisherman off the coast of the Carolinas. It is a very small island where all the young people are expected to marry young and produce more babies. It's very old fashioned in that if there is even a whisper of goings on with a boy, it can lead to marriage. Laire doesn't want that. She wants to leave her island, go to college and become a fashion designer.

Erik is the son of the governor of North Carolina. He spies Laire from his balcony as she is delivering some blue crab for his birthday celebration. This leads to a cute scene between the two. Almost like "I carried a watermelon" but with crabs. LOL

From that point on, Erik is besotted by Laire and wants to see more of her, get to know her. Laire is very innocent due to her upbringing which leads to some very weird moments between the two. Her innocence is rather shocking but it worked for me.

Things of course happen that causes a painful separation between our two lovers. Both believing the worst of the other. Several years pass (we see those years for Laire as she writes in the journal that Erik gave her) detailing her life and Ava Grace (their daughter) growing. It is a sweet interlude but very bittersweet, knowing that Erik is missing out on all of this with Ava Grace.

The two lovers meet again at the B&B where Laire worked when she was 18 and where the two would meet after work to talk and kiss. Erik is a very bitter man after what happened with Laire but he melts a little when meeting Ava Grace, not knowing she is his daughter.

Anyway, I've revealed enough but I highly recommend this entertaining and captivating story. Don't wait to read it like I did. If you have it, pick it up now and read it and if you don't, 1-Click this great read!

Quotes & Faves:

“Darlin’, I come here every night to be near you. I live for sunset like a vampire because that’s when my heart starts beatin’ each day, when I grab the keys to the car or boat and race over here to be with you. It makes me crazy all day to be away from you because I want more. I want to talk for hours and kiss you and find out what makes you laugh and . . . Damn it, Laire, this isn’t enough.”

I can’t. I can’t move on without her. I’ll be stuck here in hell, loving her, forever.

The love she bore for him was ceaseless and throbbing, an open wound on her heart that made her feel like she was dying inside.

I miss you. My memories fade a little, but my feelings don’t. My heart can’t seem to stop loving you. And when I dream of you, my Erik, I can hear your deep voice, your tender words in my ear . . . Freckles . . . darlin’ . . . I love you, Laire . . . I love you . . . love you . . . I wake up with a wet pillow and a heavy heart. I long for the day when it doesn’t hurt anymore. I fear it too, because then you’ll truly be gone and I’ll be all alone. Merry Christmas, my Erik. Laire This is a note from her journal that she writes to Erik. She calls him, "my Erik." The other one, the one who she believes betrayed her she calls The Governor's Son. She had to separate the two in order to live with what happened. *sobs*

When he’d said to her, Well, too bad for you, then, because here I am, she’d sobbed. And when he’d looked at her face, he’d recognized the emotion in her eyes immediately. “Agony,” he whispered into the wind. He knew it because he’d felt it every day they’d been apart.

Title: Don't Speak
Author: Katy Regnery
Category: Romance
Series or Standalone: Standalone
POV: Dual
Plot: 5
Characters: 4.5
Scorching Level: 5
HEA: Not telling

OMG! This is what I call a modern fairytale! Passionate love, angst and sweet romantic moments!

Laire is a young woman with dreams that go well and beyond her life in the island that she calls home. She has aspirations, hopes and believes that she will accomplish them. Her life is altered when she meets the privileged and spoiled Erik. He is the governor's son and certainly a far away dream for Laire.
Against all odds, these two completely different people fall in love. Their bond is deep but life gets in the way. They are separated. The years pass, but fate has other plans. Is love strong enough?

I will admit that the length of the book intimidated me. I am always wary of long books, but after a few chapters the story picked up and I was hooked. The great writing certainly helped.
If you love fairytale retellings, then this is the book for you. The author created magic in a world without real magic. Her magic is her skill and the beautiful words she put on paper.
I recommend it.

GAH! I LOVED THIS BOOK! I've been on a 'fairy tale retelling' binge lately, and this book is by far one of my favorites!

The book follows the lives of Laire, an Islander who dreams of more and Erik, who is North Carolina royalty. Laire meets Erik while delivering crabs to his vacation home and OMG that scene made for a lot of laughs. Yes, crabs has something to do with that exchange. From there, Laire meets with Erik in secret for fear of her father finding out that she isn't dating an islander like she is supposed to. I would write more, but I really don't want to spoil anything! But let me tell you, you will SWOON over Erik. Seriously. He has his flaws, but is definitely book boyfriend material in my opinion.

“Darlin’, I have loved you since the first moment I saw you. My feelin’s only grew deeper that summer, until the only future I could imagine included you. I was destroyed for any other woman.”

I loved how Katy Regnery incorporated the original The Little Mermaid into this story. For example: there is a seafood place called King Triton Seafood and Erik compares Laire to a mermaid when he first see's her. There were a lot more subtle similarities to the movie and yet, the book was very different from the original story. The story started off very similar to the film, but took on a life of it's own.

I absolutely LOVE what she did with this story and I cannot wait to read more from her!

Ms Regnery did such an awesome job putting a beautiful spin to the Little Mermaid!!

I wondered at fist how she would pull this off but once I started reading it I knew she had just made a magical hit!

Laire's character was so fierce and took life by the horn, compared to her sisters. She knew there was life beyond what she was told that she should be doing when she graduated. And little did she know that her tenacity for life would change her life forever.

Her first conversation & date with Erik had me cracking up!! I loved her innocence and how she made Erik second guess himself. As they carry on their relationship in secret dreams are shared and love is created!

There are disagreements and misunderstandings that lead to heartbreak and may I say that I wanted to have a smack down with Erik's mother!!!

So settle yourself in and prepare your heart for this beautiful love story! -Kara, 4.5 Stars!!

This was a 3...possibly 3.5 stars for me. The writing was well done, and I was thrust into this Little Mermaid like fairy tale right from the get go. The parts that started to change my enjoyment of the story was the direction the storyline took. I don't like to write spoilers in my reviews but let me just say that because of the decisions of the heroine made I began to lose my compassion and joy for the story... At this point I began to skim until the events I didn't like ended!

As far as the author's talent goes... I think she writes beautifully, and is able to make her words come alive on the page. For people that are huge fans of second chance romances with a fairy tale theme....then you definitely want to give this a go!

I LOVED this book! The little mermaid has always been my favorite fairytale and as excited as I was about reading a modern take on a favorite, I was nervous because I had some really high expectations. This book exceeded those expectations and was even better than I could've imagined. The writing, the characters, the setting, the romance, the angst - all of it was perfect. I loved this book so much - it's a top pick of 2017 and going on my all-time favorites list. I can't wait to re-read this one!

5 "We make our own rules." Stars

Another beautifully inspired, contemporary fairytale from Katy Regnery. Don’t Speak captures the essence, beauty, and magnitude of once in a lifetime love and how your first love shapes the person you become from there forward. The charm embedded within the pages of this young, forbidden lovers and second chance romance will leave you captivated from beginning to end.

Our heroine, Laire Cornish, represents so many young women who aren’t afforded big chances yet persevere by sheer will and hope. With big dreams and an even bigger heart, she catches the eye of the governor’s son, Erik Rexford. Sequestered on an island where the simple life and strict values are not a thing of the past Laire’s dreams are easily stunted. Conversely, with everything a man could ask for Erik finds himself pushed in directions he never intended to take. Two young people from opposite’s sides of the tracks find a kinship and likeness for each other’s bruised hearts.

Laire’s naiveté from being so sheltered shines in her brilliant personality. She’s naïve yet she’s completely open and honest which creates a recognizable allure for Erik. They fall fast and hard in a whirlwind summer of heady attraction and friendship despite the rooted secrets that could tear them apart. The unraveling of their lives comes as a sharp and heavy blow yet as the string unwinds the story gets even more meaningful and the love deeper.

This story to me was very much about the strength of the human spirit and how that strength manifests itself through profound love. It’s about recognizing that meaningful love can come from places you least expect. It’s about forgiveness and kindness and unwavering hope. It hails as a story of blossoming into your own person and how the love others helps to shape and define us allowing for a renewed spirit.

Don’t Speak is beautifully written in such a nuanced way that Regnery forces her readers to really feel deeply for her characters and their story. Each turn of the page gives us something new and each new discovery pulses with excitement. The book and the couple are romantic and whimsical that delve into angst and contrition. It’s a brilliantly balanced, lovely romance.

4 1/2 "We make our own rules." Stars!

I loved it! This story brought out the feels. The happy blush of young love; the anxiety brought on by forbidden love. The anger caused by meddling and just bad choices; the longing of separated love. The hope of reuniting. The elation of a possible forever...

Both Laire and Erik were people I truly liked and I wanted them to be together so badly. Erik is going on the favorite males list. He was just practically perfect! Almost. Just a few youthful mistakes.

I think this quote sums up this story quite nicely.

We didn’t love like kids, but we were kids. We made mistakes.” She nodded, sniffling softly. “Big ones.” “Bad ones.” “Terrible ones.”

Happy reading!!

4 - 4.5 ★'s

"We make our own rules, Freckles."

I have to be honest, the first third of the book was kind of cheesy and I just wasn't really feeling it but then...the OMG drama happened. And I was caught...hook, line and sinker! (pun intended) The almighty ANGST happened and I loved it! It was so amazing...and gets even better after!

You see Laire is an island girl going back ten generations. They have been pretty cut off from society and sheltered so they are just a tad old fashioned. Laire just wants something more.

When she goes to the mainland to deliver crabs for Erik's twenty-first birthday, she finds that more and luckily, Erik's totally on board! In fact, he pursues her pretty hard.

description

She ends up lying to her father and getting a job in a town closer to Erik and which helps them to see each other every night. Soon, that's not enough and she's coming up with more lies so they can spend the day together...and still that's not enough. She spends the night but gets found out, of course.

We then are put through all that yummy angst but it hurts oh-so-good. It was hard hearing what Erik and Laire went through but I was really impressed with Laire. Thank goodness for Judith!

I found that I really didn't mind the references to the fairytale, in fact, I sought them out. When I found out who Ursula was, I knew she would not be a nice person! And some of the lines Erik says to Laire are just too sweet.

When they finally see each other again, it indeed is quite magical. I loved how everything worked out...dreams do come true!

***** 4 Stars *****

Can be read as a standalone.

I really enjoyed this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid. It's a unique version with clever twists and touching moments.

The first half of the book is about Laire and Erik's romance as a young couple. Laire is from a small island that is extremely conservative. In her community, it's completely normal to get married and start having children right after high school. But she has big dreams to go into fashion and see the world.

Erik's world flips upside down when he meets a fisherman's daughter. She makes the time at his family's summer home bearable. As the governor's son, his parents have his future mapped out. And he knows that dating Laire will come with disapproval.

The two make their own rules and try to figure out how they could be together. But things get ugly and they just have too many things going against them.

I'm torn about this book. The first half of the book is extremely tiring because it's so long. The couple have lengthy conversations about kissing and sex since Laire is from a place that is so conservation. I don't mind that she's inexperienced, but to me it felt it was dragging a little bit.

But the last half of the book.... I LOVED IT. It brought me to tears, and I had an ugly cry face that lasted to the end. I'm a sucker for second chance romances, and this hit me hard.

Wow wow wow!!! Katy Regnery has outdone herself AGAIN. Every time I pick up one of her books I just know I'm in for something 110% amazing and special because Katy NEVER DISSAPOINTS us. Don't Speak is utterly breathtaking you guys. I was up until 5:30 am engrossed in my reading and crying my eyes out – could not stop turning the page.

This story is a modern retelling of The Little Mermaid. Laire is a daughter of a fisherman from the Outer Banks. Laire grew up sheltered within a small community with her father and two sisters. He was expected to pick a nice island boy, marry and raise nice little island children but Laire has bigger dreams. She wants to get off the island, move to a big city and become a successful fashion designer. One summer Laire met Erik, a son of North Carolina’s governor. The love birds spent a whirlwind summer sneaking around together trying to escape the town gossip and their family’s disapproval. Erik knows in his heart that Laire is the one but unfortunately his fate was decided by someone else. I really feel bad for Laire – for the cruel treatment from Erik’s family who believes that social status is most important. They have bigger plans for Erik – to follow his father’s footstep and to marry well. The summer romance was short lived and by the end of it their hearts were irrevocably broken.

Several years later, fate leads Erik and Laire back together - broken hearted but both are older and wiser. How have they been all these years? Slowly, all the misunderstandings and secrets come to light. Can Erik and Laire find in their heart to forgive, restore faith, trust each other and fall in love again?

Don’t Speak is a gorgeous love story. The first part of the book tells a story when Erik and Laire were young, free and in love so it was mostly light-hearted, sexy, cute, and fun. As the story progress, it was harder and harder to read. I was crying my eyes out during the events that lead up to how their summer ended. The cruel, unfair circumstances that Laire had to suffer – it really gutted my heart. Laire is so innocent, sweet, beautiful, honest and she deserves so much more. I adore Erik – he is handsome, charming, fun and has a big heart. He is nothing like his selfish parents. I especially love the commitment Erik has for Laire – he always believes that Laire is his forever and he never forgets that. The second part when they met again there was more heart breaking (especially the letters – it was all too much for me ). I was devastated for both of them. But if anything, Erik and Laire made me believe in faith and destiny and that everlasting love does exist despite any distance or barriers. Love will find a way.

This book is truly a masterpiece – a beautiful tale of 2 young lovers from the opposite tracks who found friendship and everlasting love. I find this fairytale story stunning - a bit haunting, emotional, heartbreaking, but at the same time soul healing, passionate and oh so romantic. I can’t wait for you all to read it!

As always, Katy is donating part of her royalties for a good cause. I adore this woman – she is one of my very favorite authors. THANK YOU KATY!!!

5+++ Bright & Lustreous "Our Rules" Stars

I'm breathless after reading this!

I have two confessions I must make. ONE: I may have played hooky yesterday because I couldn't fathom not finishing this book. Having to wait until I was home to pick it back up just was not in my sights. YES this was that GREAT! And TWO: Katy- I've got a serious Author Crush!!! This Modern Fairytale series is life!!!

This was one of the best books I've read in quite some time. It was the most exquisite of slow burns
that I have had the pleasure of reading. The ebb and flow of this story was like one of the romances you watch in the movies. Knowing its going to be epic. Waiting for the crash of this sweeping tale of love like all the best love stories have. Then the ultimate gift for a romance junkie: the healing of a heart (or two). These hearts of our hero and heroine that have been battered and bruised by separation and secrets and woven back together in a second chance romance. The HEA that is going to steal your breath away.

This dear readers is what Katy has given us in Don't Speak. Laire our mermaid, sheltered from the outside world and her dark haired prince Erik, worldly and well to do. Two worlds so opposite but they come crashing together when these two meet.

The sweetest of romances is budding right before our very eyes. BUT, they are building this love with secrets. You know what they say, that a relationship built on secrets is destined to fail... well whoever they are, are only half right.

I cannot tell you how entranced I became with these two. How devoted they were to being in love. Erik was the quintessential leading man in this one. Totally swoon worthy. AND Laire, sweet naïve Laire blossomed before our eyes as she was put through circumstances that could break a weaker person. Her strength of grace made her that much more of a beautiful character. I adore when authors give us a strong heroine.

I could gush for what is much longer than necessary on how much I LOVED this story but my final parting words for you is this:

I implore you to pick this story up. It is what all GREAT romances strive to be: WISTFUL, HOPEFUL, AND EPIC.

Happy Reading~ Sherry

Quick points and short review.

A angst and emotional read.

Rich, handsome hero and sweet, sheltered heroine.

Story of young, sweet love and the heartbreak that separates them.

Agony and heartbreak each endures through the years of separation and believing the lies/misunderstanding that each was told.

Finding each other and living, loving and healing together.

The gift of their baby Ava (what a sweet little character she was).

Confrontation for those that hurt and separated them.

Their new life and future together. The happiness and full circle of life together.

And the beautiful epilogue.

Characters that flourished and grew as the story progressed. Somewhat on the slow side in the begging but not bad. Nice secondary characters, Eric's sister Hillary, loved her. Did not care for Hero's mother and heroines family became cold and not very likable in the end.
