A NON-FICTION THRILLER BY THE AUTHOR OF “THE BOSTON STRANGLER”
TWO YOUNG RADICALS ASSASSINATE A HIGH GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL. WERE THEY PATRIOTS OR MURDERERS?
CAIRO, The car moved slowly through the baking heat and noise of the city and finally arrived at Lord Moyne’s residence. The car halted and the chauffeur hurried to open the door for the British Ambassador. On the other side, two figures leapt up and raced toward the car—both carrying revolvers. One youth reached the automobile, wrenched open the back door and fired three times at Lord Moyne.
“Stop, murderers, stop!”
Within seconds police had captured the two.
“Who are you? Why have you done this?”
One boy spoke. “We have nothing to say. We await the judgment of mankind.”
“Brilliant and suspenseful. I can think of few reading experiences in the last year as compelling as The Deed.”—Los Angeles Times
“SPELLBINDING SUSPENSE…a slice of history beautifully and accurately told. The Deed is by far the finest book Gerold Frank has ever written; it is easy to read but awfully, awfully hard to forget.”—Quentin Reynolds, Saturday Review
“COMPELLING, IMPORTANT. Even if it were not true—and it is agonizingly true—it would be a genuine literary work. It is a book not to be forgotten.”—Herald Tribune
“A NARRATIVE THAT WON’T LET YOU GO…moving and disturbing.”—Chicago Tribune
“POWER AND POIGNANCY…gives life to a footnote in history. The opening prickles with suspense. The book reaches a climax of genuine pathos. Few, I predict, will fail to be moved by the closing pages of The Deed.”—John Barkham, Saturday Review Syndicate
Gerold Frank was an American author and ghostwriter. He wrote several celebrity memoirs and was considered a pioneer of the "as told to" form of (auto)biography. His two best-known books,[citation needed] however, are The Boston Strangler (1966), which was adapted as the 1968 movie starring Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda, and An American Death (1972), about the assassination of Martin Luther King.
Before the state of Israel was created, the Britsih were the ones ih charge of the Palestine Mandate. Increased Jewish immigration upset many arabs and casued mas disturbances throughout the country. As a result the British decided to restrict Jewish immigration into Palestine. THe Holcaust mean while was raging in Europe and the Jews had no where else to go. Many of the ships sunk at sea, blown up or turned back to the German so the Jews could perish at the hands of Nazi murderers. In order to change this negative stae of events two daring young men, member of the Lehi (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel) were sent to assassinate Lord Moyne the British officer in charge of the middle east. THey pulled it off killing him as he exited from his limosine. They tried to flee on bicycle they ended up geting caught. Their names were Eliyahu Hakim and the secodn guy was named Eliyahou as well.
The British in the3 eyes of many Jews were seen as one sided favoring the arab position over theirs. Despite the fact that the balflour declaration was percieved a s a promiose for a country oj both banks ofthe Jordan River. THe Stern Gang broke opff from the Irgun. THe spiritual father of the Irgun was Zev Jabotinsky. THe actual leader in Palestine was David Raziel. THe Irgun would retaliate against arabs for terror attacks against Jews. Often times though innocwent arabs were the ones targeted and who paid the price.
As world war two loomed both the Haggana and the Irgun decided not to fight the British until the NAzi's were defeated. Yair Stern did nopt agree with this strategy so he broke away. THe Stern gang aqttacked many British and assinated several key British player during the course of the war. Yair Stern would alter be killed by the British as he was hiding in someone's Tel Aviv apartment. The Stern gang orinially tried to kill Mac Michael who ran Palestine for the British. Their atempt failed.
After both Eliyahou's were caught there was alot nof Egyptian sympathy for them despite the high anipathy for zionism. Afterall the Egyptians were suffereing under British occupation, just like the Jews. The book was written by a jounralist who convered the trial in Egypt where in both boys were eventually hangrd/ Whethyer one sypathises or not with Stern gang matters not this a great and easy read of vey historic event.
