Set in a world where The Joker is cured of his insanity and homicidal tendencies, The Joker, now known as “Jack,” sets about trying to right his wrongs. First he plans to reconcile with Harley Quinn, and then he’ll try to save the city from the one person who he thinks is truly Gotham City’s greatest villain: Batman!
After breaking into the industry at a young age, Sean Gordon Murphy made a name for himself in the world of indie comics before joining up with DC. In his tenure, he has worked on such titles as Batman/Scarecrow: Year One, Teen Titans, Hellblazer, Joe The Barbarian, and the critically acclaimed miniseries American Vampire: Survival Of The Fittest and The Wake with Scott Snyder. Murphy also wrote and illustrated the original graphic novel Offroad and the popular miniseries Punk Rock Jesus.
This is the comic book issue #1 of the event “Batman: White Knight”, which it will be a miniseries of 8 issues.

AN INSTANT CLASSIC!!!
Trust me, Sean Murphy and his White Knight story will become an instant classic, not only in the lore of Batman tales, but also in the range of comic book stories in general.
After all these years, you still have no idea what I’m capable of?
The zealot Batman’s war on crime, and particularly against The Joker, has gone too far…
…and this time The Joker isn’t the least of worries for Batman…
…since now the Dark Knight is facing something more dangerous, more cunning, more unpredictable…
…Jack Napier.
Yes, the Clown Prince of Crime is no more, and his original born identity is taken over…
…and turning Gotham City public opinion against its self-appointed fearsome protector.
And the worse of all? That Jack’s arguments against Batman are supported by the very letter of the law!
White Knight is a role reversal story where Batman suddenly loses the plot and gets banged up in Arkham while the Joker becomes “good” and decides to save Gotham. And the first issue is gahbage!
I’m not against experimental/Elseworlds-type stories like this but every “What if the Joker was good?” book I’ve read has stunk (like JM DeMatteis’ Going Sane or Michael Green’s Lovers and Madmen). I think that’s mainly because Joker’s such an awesome villain and only really works in that capacity. Why would we want to see him neutralised and made safe when he’s vastly more entertaining as an agent of chaotic evil?
Also Sean Murphy isn’t nearly as talented a writer as he is an artist to successfully pull something like this off. In order to make his feeble concept remotely pliable he has to mischaracterise Batman as a lumbering psycho mindlessly smashing his way across Gotham, easily toyed with by the benign, playful puppeteer Joker. Neither version is especially compelling or convincing.
The artless rewriting of these two iconic characters is all the originality Murphy brings to the table. He steals Joker’s “real” name of Jack Napier from Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie, the concept of Joker thinking he and Batman are ultimate besties from Scott Snyder’s Death of the Family and Joker’s standup origins from Alan Moore’s Killing Joke. There’s a real dearth of ideas, or anything substantial, here, so much so I can’t believe there’s seven more issues of this nonsense to go!
Murphy’s art is the only plus about this one. He still draws the best, most badass Batmobile out there and in general the visuals are quite striking, particularly Gotham’s architecture, subtly accentuated by Matt Hollingsworth’s sharp colours. But Murphy’s writing hasn’t gotten any better since the laughable Punk Rock Jesus and his art doesn’t make up for that. There’s no way I’m going the distance with this boring, amateurish series - White Knight is white trash!
-Joker has been redefined. That is cool the author want to try something. However, as one reviewer state, let keep the politics out of it. Spoilers here as I explain. These were not the exacts words but Batman driving around with no insurance, etc. -The police brutality is another example. -I am too upset to continue. 🇺🇸😡
So I'm very much enthused with Sean Murphy's take on the Batman. His Punk Rock Jesus was original (despite some of its flaws) and his art in Detective Comics #27 and The Wake were way too good to look at. Batman: White Knight is an Elseworlds story that explores the thesis about Batman being the true villain of Gotham, and the only person who can stop him, the legal way is Joker, the White Knight.
Murphy's art is undeniably good.
I totally buy Joker being the only person who has the capability of stopping Batman since he knows him well an in fact is in love with the Caped Crusader. Well, that idea could work, and who knows what he's going to do in the legal world. The stage is already set in issue one and Murphy only has to play the right moves with the right pieces to make this 8-issue series truly memorable.
What I don't buy is how can the whole Gotham, or at least those who are taking Joker in custody, to permit him to roam around the city guilt-free as if he's become the new hero Gotham needs. It would still take me some convincing to believe how the one-year span made the Clown Prince of Crime to a serious Harvey Dent-ish guy with a hero complex. Although
Murphy's art as what I've said is great as always. His edgy style that is coupled by dark color contrasts really sets the mood of the story. This alone is makes White Knight worth buying.
I still have my reservations with the series, though I am highly optimistic that White Knight is going to be one of those good Batman stories and not just a forgettable arc.
The book sucked. It was annoying, boring, and stupid.
Annoying. I saw this jilted lover routine between Joker and Batman in the LEGO Batman movie. It wasn’t interesting then; it isn’t interesting now. Here it isn’t even funny.
Boring. The whole role reversal plot where Joker becomes Gotham’s protector and Batman its greatest villain made me yawn. Wow. So original.
Stupid. Let me list a few. Joker suing Gotham City over police brutality. No evidence Joker has ever broken the law ever. SJWs defending Joker. Joker isn’t crazy because of an IQ test and brain scan. It goes on and on.
This is going to be one of the most influential books from DC to come out in years, I'm calling it now. As some of my friends on here may know, Batman is one of my favorite DC characters. However, it's not because of Batman himself, but all of the people that make up his mythos. Namely, the Joker.
This title is going to explore the relationship between the Joker and Batman, and that's something I love more than anything else. The Joker is probably one of the most morally.... complex characters in all of media. I mean Batman is a literally terrorist, and Joker constantly questions him, while also commiting acts of terror himself. There's a lot to unpack there, and I think this series will go there (so I won't).
I cannot recommend this series highly enough. I know that once it's done it'll be a favorite of that year (2018 I'm guessing) and be in my "books-I-recommend" shelf.
The content deserves one star, but the idea and the potential are just too good&interesting, I can't pretend I didn't like this on some level.
Jabs at "SJWs" defending psychopaths, the Joker being "cured" according to that doctor because he scored high on the IQ tests (wtaf?!) and had a cat scan (??? there's nothing wrong with the structure of his brain, lady, it's how it WORKS that's the problem. Does the writer even know what he's talking about?!), the same Joker claiming he can't be charged although he's ESCAPED PRISON (again) which is illegal in most countries and surely is in Gotham since Batman keeps going after criminals who manage to leave Arkham/the prison, and no one seems to have a problem with that except for Gordon, his sudden love for Gotham (lmao sure thing, Jan), people having a problem with Batman's "assault" on the Joker although it's apparently cured him + the entire city is utterly violent, traumatized, and dead set on getting ride of the villains (we've seen this in lots of issues) so why would they mind Batman doing his job AND eliminating the craziest criminal in town in a non-lethal way?, the BatFam not noticing Alfred's disappearance for a whole month... this story has a very fascinating concept but, boy, is it full of bullshit! The cherry on top was that claim that the Joker was never arrested for more than armed robbery. Did the artist EVER read a Batman comic? The Joker has never been shy about his plans for Gotham, he's well-known for his violent murders and torture sessions, and the current canon is about THE JOKER AND THE RIDDLER HAVING A VILLAINS CIVIL WAR!! How the fuck has that guy never been arrested for more than armed robbery? And, if true, why the fuck has he been sent to Arkham Asylum?! "Oh you robbed a bank? Let us send you to that asylum that makes people even crazier than they were before, sounds like a fair decision that can't backfire :D". Ugh. I'm gonna read the next issue because I'm really interested in a story that explicitly talks about the Joker's love and attraction for Batman, but the author really, really need to get his shit together.
I went in biased, because I adore Murphy's art. He's my favourite artist and when he writes, I find his ideas fresh and fun. There's details here that you know come from the mind of a fan. And he explores these places so enthusiastically.
There's something about messing with the Joker that you just don't do. And yet, you have to have it done to expand and experiment with the canon. And right now, I'm feeling that Murphy's going to do justice to the characters and the soul of what's always been there. And we'll be glad we included this in our Joker stories in years to come.
Looks like I missed a great series here. Thanks to Comixology Unlimited, I get to read the first two issues. I loved them both. Great story and art. Devilishly clever plotline here. Intelligent writing. And the art is suited for the storyline. Will probably purchased the rest of the issues or just get the complete collection.
What a ridiculous concept. Batman goes over the edge and Joker wants to be good because he feels that Gotham deserves better than Batman and Joker? Wtf so stupid
¿Qué pasaría si el Joker se curase de su extrema locura? ¿Y si realmente es culpa de Batman que Gotham sea un lugar tan caótico y peligroso? Una nueva trama y sucesos que me vuelan la cabeza. Muuuuuuy recomendable.
Yıllardır Batman ile Joker’in arasındaki amansız savaşı okuyup dururuz. Dile kolay, 1940’tan beri Kara Şövalye’nin en büyük, en azılı düşmanıdır kendisi. Penguen, İki Surat, Bane… Hepsi Joker’in gölgesinde kalır; kötülükte ve psikopatlıkta hiçbiri onunla boy ölçüşemez.
Yeri gelir sadece Batman’i çökertmeyi, onu delirtmeyi amaçlar; yeri gelir sırf onun dikkatini çekebilmek için akla hayale gelmeyecek psikopatlıklar yapar. Sevdiklerini öldürür, yakınlarına zarar verir, değerlerine saldırır. Ve ne olursa olsun hep güler: Ha!
Bugüne kadar bu ikilinin arasındaki savaşa hep Batman’in gözünden tanık olduk, hep onun tarafını tuttuk. Peki ya madalyonun öteki yüzü? Ya Joker’in yaşadıkları? Olaylara aynanın diğer tarafından bakmaya, hatta Batman’den nefret edecek kadar olmaya bile var mısınız?
Outstanding and truly exceptional. This is exactly what I've been craving in Batman comics - beautiful artwork, thematically dark, mature and dramatic story. Very unique concept and so far perfectly executed. This is one for the bookshelf. Issue #2 to be released on Nov. 1 and I'm really looking forward to it. Hats off to Sean Murphy.
First off, I'd like to point out that although this is listed as me reading the kindle edition of this issue, I am in fact reading the print edition, and my copy features the cover in black and white... GR really needs to put print comic books up on here. There are those of us who still read them you know.
I've been excited about this book ever since Sean Murphy announced it over a year ago! Sean Murphy is one of my favorite comic book artists. And I love Batman stories!!
Okay, I've been taking a break from superheroes for a few years now. Did the DC universe change the Joker timeline, or did Murphy just write it differently for this book? He has his . And . But I like all that. What's wrong with a little variety and homage to Batman pop-culture.
The whole premise of this is supposed to be the Joker turning Batman into the bad guy and himself into the redeemed hero. I thought I read a year ago that Murphy said that he was going to write this "In the vein of Frank Miller" in terms of making fun of Donald Trump the way Miller satirized Reagen in DKR. We'll see if he's still going down that road, hope he does.
I love Sean Murphy's work, I've been a fan of his since 2008. I've met him twice, even had a drink with him in a bar once in Philly.
This is a seven-issue miniseries, I'm in it for the whole thing! I want to see how it unfolds. Eventually, this will be collected in a trade paperback, and then another trade will be released in black and white. I prefer Murphy's work in black and white....but that would probably be years from now. Anyway, great book!! Onto Issue # 2!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Batman: White Knight by Sean Murphy may be the sleeper comic of the end of 2017 and a great short series to bring 2018 in with. The artwork by Matt Hollingsworth is insanely good and though most of the Batman fandom is following and hunting down every Metal comic; and rightfully so, Batman White Knight may very well be the best Batman going today.
What happens when the Joker pushes the Batman too far? What happens when an emotionally unstable Batman cannot think clearly? Then it is up to the Joker to save Gotham City. In a violent an all out street fight, Batman forces a handful of pills down his throat in front of the entire city. A beat down that was captured on social media and quickly brings all out condemnation from the public. Has the caped crusader gone too far? Can the public continue to accept this violent vigilante?
"...I see Gotham more clearly than any of you. But you won't admit it. To you, I'm just a psycho in makeup. You left me no choice, but to come here tonight, to prove it to you..."
The pills have a side effect no one expected. They have cured the clown prince of crime of his madness and he is now just Jack Napier. And Jack owes a debt to Gotham. He is going to clean the streets and bring peace to the city. To do so, he must first take on Gotham's greatest villain: The Batman.
Sean Murphy is a great comic book writer and he does what, currently with this group of writers we have now, so few are willing. He takes established characters down a path that may endanger their legacy and does so with respect and daring. The hero going bad is not a new concept. We were teased with this in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy and see it often in the Superman comics where Lex Luthor is seen by the public as a good guy. A benefactor, heck Luthor was even the President of the United States for a time.
But in White Knight, Murphy does more than tease. He walks right in and takes the best table.
Creative, good writing and kick ass art. Batman: White Knight is one of the best comics of 2017 and is sure to make an impact in 2018.
I was super excited about this premise and I think Murphy did a great job flipping the script and setting the series up in this issue. It's pretty jarring and oh-so fascinating seeing the toll of being Gotham's vigilante hero has taken on the Batman. There's something about it that feels very real and perfectly timed. A comic that touches on police brutality and accountability--yes, please!
There's a lot of potential without it being too over-the-top (for a comic book). I saw echoes of Snyder and Capullo in the Joker's jilted-loveresque Bat-obsession, which was sheer brilliance.
And the art was outstanding--dark, gritty, and exactly the Gotham I'd expect to see. I can't wait to see what else the series has to offer.
Matt Hollingsworth's confident art is always worth showing up for, and Murphy's story somehow makes Gotham seem authentically post-Trump [intra-Trump?], takes the tired trope of The-Joker-and-Batman-Are-Actually-Creepily-Codependent and makes it fresh again, treats mental health as something more than a plot device, AND makes me root for Harlequin (with some a real smooth twist). #2 kept it all up, and I'm declaring this the best, most vibrant Batman I've read in a decade.
OMG!!
DC's doing some incredible things right now. Scott Snyder's Metal is blockbuster good, but this is more like an excellent courtroom drama. It's topical too, like a Batman in 2017 where public opinion becomes judge and jury. I'm in.
i love the concept (the joker has to save gotham from batman!) so i'll be reading the rest of this series ... but why oh whyyy do so many batman comics throw a bunch of pop psychology at you & then expect you to think they're super deep? honestly, lego batman did it better.
The idea seems great and actually reading it turned out amazing. The joker essentially dragged Batman throughout the story and is changing the narrative for if Batman is actually right, he is but is what he does morally right? Good read would definitely recommend.
Well, that was unexpected. Joker is now the Hero of Gotham while Batman is locked in a cell. And I'm starting to like this new Joker. Still has a little feeling that it's all a part of another Joker's joke. A very good start. Awesome Artworks. Eagerly Waiting for the next Issue.
