Her gift will bring light to a world of darkness...
In 2047, the world exists in permanent darkness. Nineteen-year-old Nadine, a student at NYU, works hard to better her family's life in the harsh conditions. When she starts having strange visions of someone named Victor, she tries to ignore the flashes, afraid she might be going insane.
But when she bumps into a very real Victor, her entire world shifts. Her visions taking a turn for the worse, Nadine is bombarded with prophecies of eerie fates, unfamiliar gods, sharp-clawed demons... and instructions. Along with the reluctant Victor, she finds her path entwined with yet another man, Micah, who may be able to shed light on her dark revelations.
Directed down an unbelievable path of magic and mayhem, the three must unravel clues from the visions in order to restore an ancient creed. The chance to bring sunlight to the world again is in Nadine's gift, but only if the evil forces behind the darkness don't manage to stop her first.
While Juliana Haygert dreams of being Wonder Woman, Buffy, or a blood elf shadow priest, she settles for the less exciting—but equally gratifying—life of a wife, mother, and author. She resides in North Carolina and spends her days writing about kick-ass heroines and the heroes who drive them crazy.

I love the plot of this story. This is going to be a great, unique urban fantasy series. I would give it 5 stars, but the first half of the book was slow to me. I really had a hard time connecting with the characters. Their personalities were kind of boring in the first half. I could not "feel" the emotions (fear, desire, anger, sadness, etc.) that these characters have the potential to exhibit. (I give the first half of the book 2 stars)
But the second half...OMG, it was great. A real 5 star page turner. And my connection to the characters greatly improved. Juliana has created a new pantheon of gods in her fantasy world who's actions have caused Earth to become a dystopia. Nadine, a 19 year old college student fears that she has become mentally ill because of the strange visions she is experiencing. Stranger things begin to happen when she actually meets Victor, the man she has started to love in her visions, and Micah, a man who saved her life.
For someone so young, Juliana is a good writer. I hope she continues to develop these character's personalities to the point that the reader is hopelessly attached to them. I want to be so attached to them that I cry when they are hurt and mourn if they die, boil with anger at their injustices and get slap happy with their triumphs. (Like I do when I read Kim Harrison and Sherrilyn Kenyon's urban fantasies)
Juliana does a good job in making me want to continue to discover the story's mystery. The second half of the book is suspenseful, as the secrets of the mystery are revealed. And the ending makes me want to continue my reading quest.
This is not an erotic NA romance, but the age of the characters places it in the NA category. It is clean enough for teens to read. I plan to continue reading this series, but I do hope it gets steamier.
The ending is a cliff-hanger, but does end positive, preparing the reader for future adventures with Nadine, Victor and Micah.
I picked this book up after reading a blurb somewhere and dove right in. I've been reading so much contemporary romance lately that it was nice to get back to my favorite genre--paranormal. This book actually is a blend of new adult/contemporary and paranormal, which I loved. NYU student, Nadine, lives in a post apocalyptic world where human sized bats attack people and plagues and disasters hit randomly. Nadine thinks she may be going crazy because of visions she's been having of a gorgeous guy named Victor. When she meets Victor in her lucid world, things start to get interesting. It gets crazy compelling when Micah shows up and now you have the potential love triangle. Nadine's visions are actually the telling of what led to the apocalyptic world she lives in and you find out that Victor and Micah are more than meets the eye. The romance is light and sweet, although it heats up a little toward the end.
This is the first book in what appears to be a trilogy. Miss Haygert's writing style is beyond fantastic. I was hooked from the start. She builds a vivid and realistic world. Her characters are all flawed but you love them despite that. One of the true tests for me with a book is how well I can connect with the characters and Nadine, Victor and Micah will stay with me for a long time. Loved, loved, loved and look forward to the next!
Isn't it one of the most satisfying things when a book that starts off rather weak turns out to be a real page turner after all? This may not be the best book I've ever read, but boy, am I hooked.
This copy was provided to me by the author for an honest review. Again, I feel so lucky to be reading such a very good book!
I'm not really big on dystopian story, maybe because I don't get to read a lot about them. This book is definitely on that genre. A little bit curious, I took a peep. The setting is in New York after 30 years when our sky is no longer blue... rivers and lakes are polluted... streets are no longer safe. Our world is close to chaos. And there's our heroine Nadine.
Nadine is a student at a secured NYU campus. As I read , I think it's the only place secured. I saw how horrible things outside the school and I can always feel Nadine's anxiety and fear when outside. So, what's special about Nadine? She has this visions that comes like an episode.. she just spaces out anytime , anywhere which she finds disturbing ... but it's also something she looks forward to! It's in her visions that she got to be with the gorgeous Victor Gianni, her Prince Charming.. the man of her dreams!
“All my visions were about the same perfect and gorgeous guy. My dream Prince Charming was called Victor Gianni. He was twenty-three, tall and athletic, with light brown hair streaked by some natural honey-colored highlights, brilliant sea-green eyes, and his smile always made my heart somersault” “Yes, Victor lived only in my visions, but I was in love with him.”
Her visions about him is so vivid...that she almost chose it more than the reality she's currently living. In her visions, everything is perfect.. the sky is still blue ..our world ..not destroyed. Not until her visions begun to shift.. when suddenly she witnessed gods and goddesses in heated argument ...which means more chaos in our world! And I'm thinking.. This is bizarre! First, there's Prince Charming ...now gods and goddesses?! What the ...?! But wait! What's this have to do with Nadine? Again.. here comes my curiosity...
More bizarre things happen after . When Nadine was attacked by huge , ugly bats that almost got her killed! And then... Of course someone has to rescue her! No it's not Victor! A little disappointed ...but .. Here's comes Micah! Gorgeous. Exotic.
“His deep, dark eyes bored into mine, and my breath caught. Unkempt jet-black hair framed the rough edges of his fair face, and broad shoulders were bracketed by his leather biker jacket. Despite looking frightening, he was gorgeous.”
What the hell?! Two gorgeous guys. One in her visions and one in front of her?! Damn lucky girl! And to add to her luck... a few days after she actually saw and met the real , in the flesh Victor!!! Wow and wow! Thought she was the luckiest girl alive? Think again. When she met the actual Victor , he is nothing like her "dream Victor"! He is cold , aloof ..the "don't dare talk to me" type! Oh. No!! I can almost sense Nadine's little bubble of dreams shattered! Poor Nadine... I told you..not to expect too much! See?!
But then she discovered that these two gorgeous men have something in common. They both are experiencing this excruciating pain and nothing can soothe... except for her TOUCH! Yeah. Right. So, no matter how Victor seems to be rude to her. He still needs Nadine. So, suck it up, Victor! I can see myself smirk! Haha.
As her vision became more frequent .. and alarming coming true.. more dangers are coming for them! Demons ,killer bats and some evil angry gods goddesses are after them! Together they must act to save themselves! Their destination : the Clarity castle. And their only guide? Nadine's visions! Can they trust her vision? Will it lead them to the answers they are looking for?
I love how the author describes the action sequences.. the dangerous chase! It was really really good! It was like watching an action thriller film! I can even feel my heart beating fast!
And more revelations are coming.. about the truth behind these gods and goddesses! It was so fast like I have information overload! There are mixes of flashbacks and visions! My oh my! I have to pause to catch my breath! Poor Nadine! She is caught between this big war of the gods mess! How can she ever have the chance to stand against them and even against her growing feelings for both Victor and Micah?! The ending left me a little ..no.. not a little but more bewildered! Like, in the middle of something really important..cut short! I'm like, what was that?!! I need to know what happens now! Why does it had to end like this? When I have more questions unanswered?! I can't wait for more adrenaline pumping adventure which makes me scream : Need the next book ASAP!

I loved this book; it was a definite page turner! This book had a great mixture of romance, action and betrayal. What I liked was that although there were some things that were predictable, such as the real identities of some characters, there were so many things that occurred that you would have never thought of. So many twists and turns that it left you at the edge of your seat; just wanting to know what would happen next.
Nadine is a wonderful heroine. You could tell that any decision she would make would be for the benefit of others. Coming from a very poor family, she values the lives of others and wants to do what she can to help. Throughout the book you see her turn from a girl who was a bit lost and confused as to what was happening to her, into a strong girl who is determined to not give up and protect those she loves. I also loved the romance in this book. Yeah its a love triangle like many other books out there and in the beginning you're pretty sure you know who she will end up with but towards the end you kind of doubt yourself. I loved that you sort have no clue where it will go. Victor and Micah are great additions to the story. Victor is very reserved and the complete opposite from the Victor Nadine thought she knew. At first you don't know whether to like him or not because he's very rude to most people around him but you get to understand why it is he acts that way and doesn't let others get close to him. His motivation is more towards the protection of others rather than self-preservation. Micah is super cocky and also has his episodes of mood swings like Victor. He can be violent when he gets angry to the point of losing all control but he can also be very caring and protective. You can see that under that hard shell he presents to others, there's a guy who is often misunderstood and although he's made many bad decisions; he just wants someone to love. Someone to care for him. Both of these love interests are different from each other but what they do have in common is the love they have for Nadine and there need to protect her at all costs.
The cliff hanger makes you want to get your hands on the sequel pronto. I can't wait to find out what else is in store for Nadine, Victor, and Micah. This is a wonderful paranormal read that you would not want to miss out on. This series is now definitely one of my favorite series.
Destiny Gift is a unique blend of mythology and the paranormal in a post-apocalyptic setting. Bombings, targeted, extreme violence, and natural disasters occur almost every day around the world. From the lack of sun, agriculture suffers, thus so does the global market along with the stability of countries and households. And there are undocumented gigantic bats preying on people in the night.
When Nadine, an NYU student who's trying to secure the future of her family, meets the man of her literal dreams, she begins to realize her dreams are more like visions. Whether they're of the past or the future, no one knows. I certainly didn't, and the mystery only made the discovery of the answer more fun. I did a little giddy jig in my seat when I learned what this story revolved around. Although I figured out most of the twists after that, Juliana Haygert did a wonderful job with the suspense throughout the book. She offered a glimpse at the overall puzzle, but each piece only steadily became clearer with Nadine's visions, actions, and abilities, as well as others'.
Victor is not the sweet, adoring man Nadine has come to know in her dreams. There's also much more than meets the eye to the delicious Micah, the stranger who seems to pop up at the most opportune times. I really liked how the characters' actions played off each other's, making events seem like either fate or an intervention of free will. You don't really know, and that was the beauty of it.
While there is a love triangle, it's very subtle. Romance does not drive nor dominate the plot, which I appreciated and is why I would consider this book more of an Urban Fantasy than a PNR. Yet, the connection and attraction definitely burns between the characters. I can say who my choice would be—can't we all with love triangles, most of the time?—but for once, I think the obvious choice was the point because of what that would mean. Like it will either be the most painful or emotionally moving. I'm kind of scared! LOL. But also I'm hopeful and excited to see where things lead and how it will get there—if the characters will make the right choice or be true to form and continue to make mistakes.
This type of anticipation, of wanting to know a person's journey, is what set this book apart from other PNR/UF-book-ones, for me. Even though there's a cliffhanger and not all questions on the world dynamics are answered, I don't care. I don't think all the info matters in the grand scheme of things. No, that's not true. They matter, greatly, but aren't the point and might only deter the characters and bloat the plot, depending upon delivery. Juliana Haygert gave just enough to sate my curiosity while pique it even more. She made me want to invest in the characters, their growth and lives, not just look forward to the end result.
Vivid and compelling, Destiny Gift is a great start to a series. I can't wait to read the next book and would recommend this one to people looking for fantasy that's a bit more contemporary.

Walking away from Destiny Gift I really didn’t get everything I was hoping to out of it. Pretty much all of the New Adult I have read previously have been Contemporary. So this one was a little different for me. Even though I wish I could have got more out of it, I thought it was a pretty decent book. Juliana brings something a little different to this emerging fad, which I thought was nice. It is good to see when authors break away from the confines dictating a current fad. When New Adult first started becoming really popular it was mainly all contemporary. So it is nice to see Juliana and other authors branching out.
The story in Destiny Gift was fairly unique. I wouldn’t say it was completely groundbreaking or anything. It really keeps your interest though, which is always a wonderful thing. Would rather have a story that can keep my attention rather than a huge groundbreaking story that gets boring half way in. Juliana is amazing with words, she has great world building too which also helps drag you into her story. If you’re looking for a fast paced and exciting story, then this would be a great choice. I read it off and on in just a day and had no problem staying attached to what I was reading.
Now to talk about the characters. I really don’t feel like there is a whole lot to say about them. Nadine, Victor and Micah all felt pretty basic to me. They were great characters, and easy to connect to. But there was really nothing extremely spectacular about them. I was hoping to experience a little more depth from them but there are still some books left to come in the series. So I am sure there is a lot left to learn about some of the characters. It’s just a matter of waiting and seeing what happens.
Overall this book was impressive, but not amazing. It was lacking in a few areas, but not really enough to cause much damage to its overall enjoyment factor. So if you are looking for a quick and fun read, like I said above this is a really great choice. The not so great aspects of it are fairly minor, so it’s not really something that should turn you away from this book if you’re interested in it I really think you would most likely enjoy it.
Destiny Gift is a new adult paranormal novel set in a future New York in the midst of a world crisis. The world has been plunged into permanent darkness and crime and natural disasters are rampant.
Nadine is suffering from strange hallucinations, which come without warning. Up until now they’ve mainly been of a guy called Victor, who she has come to know as a close friend and is secretly in love with. But now she’s seeing strange gods and goddesses, and her visions are starting to overlap with the waking world. However, when she finally meets Victor in real life, she is stunned to find that he doesn’t know her at all. Meanwhile, thanks to a mysterious guy named Michel, she learns that she apparently has the ability to heal pain at a touch. she, Victor and Michel are part of something bigger than they know
This is a fast-paced read with an intriguing twist on mythology and supernatural powers. I love the idea of a future world in complete darkness, with twisted bat-creatures roaming the streets – whatever that says about me! I really like the way the gods and mythology tie into what’s happening in the world.
I did think Nadine needs be a bit more pro-active, and she seems to let the others just use her healing powers without protesting, but she’s a relatable protagonist. The plot is superb, with some great twists I never saw coming!
This is a great example of new adult paranormal with post-apocalyptic elements. It’s fast-paced, well-written, and the approach to mythology is unique. Great stuff!
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I have to admit that it took me a bit to get into the story. It was mysterious but I just had no idea where it was going. I was really curious about Victor and wanted to see where the story went so I continued on. Once I got about 30-35% into the book, I was hooked and liked the relationship between the 3 main characters and enjoyed seeing their growth. Nadine was a strong, female character and even though she had some understandable week moments, it was hard not to route for her. I look forward to seeing where this series goes next after the cliffhanger ending. I am so glad I had the opportunity to read such an unique story.
A fascinating read from a majorly talented writer. In DESTINY GIFT, we enter into a dystopian New York 30 years in the future. Nadine is a college student who is both intrigued with and plagued by visions of the handsome Victor Gianni. Nadine believes that Victor exists only in her visions, and is surprised to encounter him in real life. Her experience with the real-life Victor is nothing like what we'd expect, and Nadine's visions soon shift to shed light on her world, and how she might be able to change it.
Major kudos to Juliana Haygert for creating a world that is both dystopian and paranormal. What a unique combination! Nadine is a complex, strong, and motivated protagonist, and the story kept me hooked. Can't wait for the next read from Juliana Haygert!
I won this book in an even back in February and just received it recently. Overall, I enjoyed the book very much and would reccommend it to others. I am definitely going to keep reading the series. For me the beginning was a little scattered and it took me a while to really get into the book but once I did I had to keep reading. I like the characters and the ending was a nice cliffhanger.
Totally awesome read. Nadine has visions of a handsome man named Victor in her dreams and then she actually meets someone who looks like him. Unbelievable, couldn’t put it down. Received an ARC.
Powerful, compelling story. Interesting mythos. Nadine's gift is compassionate and heartwarming. Victor and Micah seem to be the two sides of the same coin. But is that really so. The story leaves me wanting more: in the best possible sense. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and hope that you will feel the same way.
I received this book as an ARC; however, the review is my honest opinion.
*I received a free copy of this from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I went into Destiny Gift not knowing what to expect, but I was immensely surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The concept of Nadine, the main character, meeting the real-life man she's been dreaming about really intrigued me!
Actual rating: 3.5 stars!
Once I started reading, I was kind of hooked. This book did not take me at all long to finish! I loved the main character's voice and how she told the story. Her inner dialogue flowed easily, and I found myself pulled along on Nadine's journey to discovering what her visions really mean.
However, the book didn't really pick up for me until the halfway point. Much of the beginning is very basic and mundane, except for Nadine's visions and the Victor in her dreams showing up. Most of her inner dialogue revolved around the fact that the Victor in real life was not the same man she'd fallen in love with during her dreams. It's hard for Nadine to take, so I understand her need to figure him out. But she spent quite a lot of time talking about Victor, and even Micah. It turned into a love triangle quickly, and I'm sure that subplot will still remain in the second book. I'm not so sure Nadine even understands who and what she wants. Her feelings for Victor, especially, were back and forth and quite confusing. I understand her confusion, because she fell in love with a man who didn't exist and the one standing before falls short of that high standard. But sometimes, that heavy focus on the two boys instead of her visions took away from my reading enjoyment.
I thought Nadine was a pretty strong character, though she did tend to get on my nerves. Like I said above, much of her dialogue revolves around the men in her life, especially Victor. It made the romance seem more important than what was really going on with her visions. I didn't think she spent enough time trying to figure out what they meant, or why she has them. Her visions showed the past, the present, and the future, but it took her a long time to even question them. But Nadine was a likable character who felt very realistic in this post-apocalyptic world. Though there is major importance in her visions, Nadine doesn't stop going to school or let it rule her life. I liked that, but then again, the story-line didn't really move until Micah showed up, demanding that they leave because someone wanted them dead. After that, the plot thickens.
I think this book was more mythological than paranormal, but I loved those aspects of it. Destiny Gift, at first, seems your basic paranormal and post-apocalyptic novel. The readers find out what's really going on before the main character does. Much of the mythological aspects were easy to figure out, or at least, guess about. (Cheryl's character was very easy to figure out!). But who would have thought the destruction and desolation of the world was because the real gods and goddesses got greedy and started a war with each other? I loved the mythological story-line and plot! It was my favorite part of the book. It seems really straight-forward when you get sucked into the visions with Nadine, but there is so much more going on than what is shown. I guessed at what it all meant, and I was partially right. But I still don't know everything. So, I'm really looking forward to what's going to happen in the second book, because that was one sucky cliffhanger!
The secondary characters were all very well-written, especially the two swoon-worthy love interests and the villainous gods and goddesses. They all seemed to have a role to play, even if it was to hurt the main character. Victor and Micah were polar opposites, two male characters whose ancestry is a lot more complicated than any of them could have guessed (I was actually pretty close with that guess). I want to know more about them! They're both really intriguing and well-written. And, of course, extremely hot and protective.
Overall, I really enjoyed Destiny Gift. I just felt that the focus of the book was placed more on the romance, or the lack of one, between Nadine and Victor. The confusion of him being different from her dream Victor was heavily focused on in the beginning that I thought it took away from the mythological story-line. But I loved the complex characters, and I can't wait to see where this plot goes!
I took one look at this book and was falling all over myself to read it. Why? Well, let's list the reasons, shall we?
- New Adult Paranormal Romance. New Adult. We all know how much I heart that genre, yes? And paranormal romance. I'm usually cool with that.
- Do you SEE that cover? Ahhh, so gorgeous.
- Victor! I wanted to learn about this booooy. Can you blame me? He sounded so interesting in the description.
- Fates, gods, and demons. I wanted to KNOOOOOW, you know?
And now I've read the book. I finally sat my booty down and made my way all the way through this book. And...well, I'm not disappointed. But I'm not especially slap happy, either. This book was good. But it wasn't OMGOMG YAY.
But I still think it is worth reading.
Why? WHY would I tell you that after it did not meet my expectations?
Well, I'll tell you why, booklover. Juliana's writing? Was great. I really liked it. And Micah? (A character I'll tell you about later.) He was fabulous. The second half of this book? Had me flipping pages like mad. And the ENDING?! Goodness, gracious, people. WHERE is book 2 when I need it? Gah.
Now, that means that this book is not perfect. So what? The first half of this book was sort of...meh for me. So what? Victor didn't make my insides glow like I thought he would. So what? Because everything I DIDN'T like about this book was made up for with something I liked. Heck, my list of things I did not like is overshadowed by the list of things I DID like.
Character Rundown: Nadine: Ooooh, girl. I'm not going to lie to you--I was not really a fan. She just seemed so...naive to me. She's not ALL bad, but she's not my favorite protag ever. But her gift(s)? Awesome. Seriously.
Victor: This boy is not mine. There is Victor from her Visions and Victor is Nadine's real life and...I think I might have liked Vision Victor if we'd gotten more time with him. But real life Victor? Got on my nerves. He had a few sweet moments, I'll give him that, but he didn't wow me like I thought he would.
Micah: Ahhh, ACCENT! Yeah, Micah's my boy here. He uses the word "darling", which always makes me laugh, and...just, goodness, y'all. When Nadine was all fawning over Victor (who for some reason I keep wanting to call Vincent...gah! I need If I Should Die already!)...anyway....Nadine was fawning over Victor, and I was sitting there like "WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE MY BOY AGAIN?!?! BRING. HIM. BACK." So yeah. Micah made me smile and laugh and he is the best character in this book, in my opinion.
Plot. This was actually pretty solid. Another good thing about this book. It was kind of slow for me at the beginning, but about halfway through, things just picked up and I was INTO this book. There is a plot twist. I didn't see it coming. Though, once it was starting to be revealed, I DID guess the rest of it before we were told. But that's not too bad. At least I didn't guess at the beginning. I guessed DURING the big reveal.
Romantic/Sweet Things. We have Vision Victor, Real Victor, and Micah. All of them have their moments. Vision Victor's are short lived because...well, you'll see when you read the book! Real Victor...those sweet moments were almost the only moments I really liked him. But I'm okay with that. And Micah. Ahhhh, his were my favorite. "Darling." The only person who can one-up him with the darking thing right now is Liam from The Darkest Minds (AKA my favorite book EVER) and his use of the word "darlin'." Micah relieved stress with his moments. I loved it.
The ending. It's not really a cliffhanger, but I was left with a feeling of "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?!?!" I want to read that second book. I need to find out...things. Things that I will not tell you because I refuse to spoil, but OMG more Micah pleasepleaseplease. Okay? OKAY.
Overall,Destiny Gift is not the perfect book. It has flaws. But in the end, it is a solid story with very many redeeming qualities that will leave you making grabby hands for book 2. Goodness knows I am.
At A Glance I loved the concept but the beginning was slow and the ending was frustrating.
The Good What drew me into Destiny Gift was the concept. I love me some gods and demons. This book started out like an intriguing dystopian with a livable but scary New York. The world is in constant darkness and huge bats like to tear people walking on the streets to shreds. Yeah, not fun. I loved how much depth this story had as it went on. Destiny Gift was crazier and more intricate than I expected. There is a lot of potential for the series, that's for sure.
I found each character to be flawed but likable. I love how Nadine struggles with her visions and the idea that she may be going insane. The love for her family was really heartfelt. She does everything with them in mind. I really felt for her when her Victor from her visions isn't at all the reality of Victor in real life. I could feel her sadness at losing the man she might have loved to someone who was a stranger. She also gains a lot of strength near the end. I was so proud of her perseverance when faced with her enemies. I would love to see Nadine's confident side in the future.
Victor frustrated me so much, but in a good way. He is so different from his vision counterpart. He's surly and rude. You can tell life has not been kind to him. But he easily grows on you. By the end, I was proud of his decisions. Micah was all charm and mystery. I felt like no one could ever really trust him but his constant smile and flirting made it easy to fall for him a little. He actually interests me more than Victor. Their quest with Nadine made for some great entertainment.
The world in Destiny Gift was dark and violent. No one can be trusted because no one is who they say they are. I felt for Nadine as her world crumbled around her over and over again. I think Haygert really let the emotion of each character shine through in her writing. I am very interested in book 2 of the series.
The Bad The beginning was really slow. I felt like it took forever to get to the point of the story. The ending was disappointing. It literally stopped in the middle of the story.
I one hundred percent knew all the twists and secrets of this book. It wasn't difficult to figure out. I wish there were more unpredictable surprises waiting for me but there wasn't.
The Snuggly As for the romance, expect a love triangle. It wasn't too bad. I liked the extreme differences between Micah and Victor. And Nadine's confusion and interest in both of them actually made sense. There is no sex, only some kissing, very YA-ish instead of New Adult.
Final Thoughts Though I hope to get my hands on book 2, I am still a little conflicted by some of Destiny Gift. I didn't like being left hanging by the ending at all. But the characters made it worth the read. Hopefully there is more satisfaction in the rest of the series. Recommended overall.
Quotes "Wait," he called out.
My pulse quickened, and I turned to him.
"Can I have your hand?" he asked.
"Excuse me?"
He laughed--a delicious sound. "No, not like that." He ambled up to me, his sly grin adorning his flawless face. "I want to hold your hand." He extended his hand, and I scowled at it. "Just for one second. Please."
His cryptic black eyes pleaded in a way I couldn't resist. I gave my hand to him and , as our skin met, the same cold shock from the other night stung me. My gaze flew to Micah's face. He stood still with his eyes closed and both hands over mine, then took a deep, soothing breath. I battled the urge to yelp and pull back after I saw his intensity.
“Victor lived only in my visions, but I was in love with him.”–Nadine
Nadine has spent the last nine months cursed with hallucinations, which normally would be all bad except for the fact that she’s in love with the man of her dreams–er, hallucinations. Actually, make that visions. It turns out what she’s seeing is the past, present, and future and most definitely real, including her love. Well, kinda. Real Victor is nothing like vision Victor. And then there’s the mysterious Mycah, the first guy who can tempt her away from the imaginary version of the unfriendly and aloof real Victor. But, none of that matters since creatures are out to get her, and they won’t stop until she’s dead…
“If they catch you before you arrive, it will be the end…The world will be at war with the darkness. And the darkness will win.”–The Fates
I found the dark world in this book intriguing! In it, Earth is a huge disaster zone and criminals and chaos rule while unexplainable natural events keep occurring. Despite the gloom and paranormal creatures haunting the skies, people are still trying to live their lives, including Nadine. In addition to studying to get into medical school and working part time, she has to deal with criminals and human-sized bats outside the fenced and armed NYU. Everyone’s on guard, and she’s no stranger to the pepper spray in her purse. Even better, I loved the creative explanation for why the world has turned into such a mess and that there’s still hope for everything to get back into place.
While I really enjoyed the paranormal feel and the plot, I wasn’t so much a fan of the love triangle that didn’t seem to take off. When Nadine meets the real Victor, he has to compete with the perfect and loving vision Victor. Since we jumped right into the middle of the romance with vision Victor, I felt like I missed out and didn’t understand why she was in love with Victor when the real Victor was such a jerk. With all the sniping and negativity, that side of the love triangle didn’t feel very romantic. As for Micah, Nadine is so obsessed with Victor to really give Micah a chance so that side of the love triangle didn’t get to be formed.
I liked the last half of the book more than the first since we start getting some answers, and I loved how good and evil blend together. I feel so bad for Nadine at the end, because she was manipulated and used for others’ benefits. Although I didn’t connect with her character and don’t feel like I really know her, I still hope that she has a much better future for her. Same goes with Victor and Micah; I feel bad for their situations and am rooting for them so that they’ll find a happier future. As for the villains, I thought they were crazy for putting the world at risk for their own ambitions, but every hero needs a good villain to stop, right?
Although this is the first in a trilogy, I thought the ending was very satisfying even though many of the characters’ fates were left unknown. Overall, if you enjoy New Adult Fantasy and Paranormal Romance (this was low heat, more of a Young Adult level), check this one out!

First off, before I get to my coherent review all I have to say is this….I must, must get my hands on the second book!! Oh my god’s, why did it end there! How could you! So not fair!! haha, okay now let me compose myself….
….From the moment I started reading I was consumed by this spine chilling world Mrs. Haygert has created! That scene in the beginning where Nadine is reading the newspaper headlines I knew this was going to be one intense read! And it was for the second half of the book. Again, I must get the sequel!!
Don’t get me wrong, the first half was great too! However it was mainly world building and character development but things happened too, trust me! Like giant bats attacking Nadine, visions, and her having a crazy power to heal two guys and Nadine doesn’t even knows why. Plus, for some reason one of the guys can repel the evil bats that roam the skies. Crazy!
This was so original, unique, and absolutely gripping of a read! I’m so glad that Mrs. Haygert came to me because this book is amazing! This is one series any paranormal lover shall read! And if you’re a fan of Legion the movie like I am, then you’re going to love the second half of the book! Though sadly there aren’t any old ladies with sharp teeth that like to eat raw meat after our trio but there are crazy size bats, gods, and demons after them! So intense!
Completely sitting on the edge kind of book, I just couldn’t stop turning the pages, and I even stayed up late at night just to see what happens! Yeah, it’s that good of a book as I don’t do that very often (this girl likes her beauty sleep, haha).
You guys know me and how I’m not the biggest fans of love triangles. So when two guys came into Nadine’s life, I of course rolled my eyes. However I believe Mrs. Haygert did it well! Nadine wasn’t in love with both of them, thankfully. So I was able to enjoy the relationships blooming, #TeamVictor! (yeah, I just did that. haha)
"I won't! What do you want me to say?" He paced forward, making me retreat. "Want me to tell you that you get to me? That since the first time I saw you, you affected me?" His voice was high and rough. "That I tried not looking for you every time I felt the pain because I knew I would be weak and fall for you? Do you realize that everyone I have ever loved is now dead?" He trapped me between the bed and him. "Should I tell you I'm scared of getting close to anyone because they might end up dead? That I'm scared of getting close to you? That I'm scared of losing you?"
Overall this is a must read! A series I am dying to continue! Though this wasn’t perfect as I was able to step away from it for a bit, I still enjoyed this when I got back to it and that’s when I truly couldn’t put it down again. So if you love twist and turns, maddening gods, visions becoming real, a unique world, melt worthy scenes, the fate sisters, and all in all a great story line then you should definitely check out this book!
I'll admit first and foremost that just because I had to swap review dates with The Iron Traitor a few weeks ago, does not mean that I wanted to toss Destiny Gift right out the window and into the ocean. I almost lost part of my notes with the assumption that my Kindle was broken while in perfect condition when it really just needed charging.
Marking in ebooks is the only way not to get in severe trouble. x) I pity my poor planner with the chickenly scribbles of doom.
Destiny Gift is actually a really interesting book, being set in a futuristic (though not so far from today I'm assuming) New York with a hint (okay, more like a lot) of mythology – hooray! – and fantasy – double hooray! – mixed in. So much is made clearer about halfway through the book, but Haygert manages to keep us in suspense and not confuse readers in the process, which basically shows that the author has great writing potential – and hopefully a very successful writing career too!
The idea behind the Destiny Gift is also pretty intriguing, so let me toss some basic word math in: Visions + Made Up Mythology (Because then one has full control of making of legends. So much fun.) + Other Goody Elements = Cooking Up A Pretty/Really Good Story.
I hope that sums up my entire thoughts in a nutshell of good old math. No Algebra needed (YES). But I'm not exactly finished, because I still need to talk about the characters, and having no clue about the characters is pretty much a book losing an arm or leg (ouch).
Victor and Micah, the lovely guys one can go swoon over if they so choose – but no thanks. I'm focusing on good old days of Finals – seemed to be too perfect. Well, I take that back. They're not perfect. They just seem too perfect in looks. Not that I mind.
I also like Micah's humor. Victor seems more of a "I'm a poisonous snake. You know, red on yellow. Stay away if you want to live." type of person. Not exactly the most pleasant image, since this is the snake I'm talking about: Freaking out? It's not the actual poisonous one. I didn't really want to... "poison" my blog with snakes you know. :p
I was sort of thinking about Biology at the time the review was written.
I suppose it isn't a terrible comparison. Why? I'm not giving spoilers....
"All right, let's change the question. What* are you three?" "Power Rangers, ever heard of them?"
-------------------- Review copy provided by author for review Original Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Owls This review and more can be found at Bookwyrming Thoughts
The book starts off with Nadine, living in a dark world 30 years in the future. The world is a very dangerous place to live which we discover early on. Nadine is having visions, they are of Victor and she is in love with Victor almost to the detriment of a real life with a real man.
I found the first half of the book to be slow and at times I was a little confused on some of the continuity. There were terrible bats waiting in the wings to attack but Nadine lived in a secure building and her school was also secured by a high wall. Why didn’t they just fly over if they wanted her that much?
Despite it’s slow beginning I did like Nadine, and her friends Raisa and Olivia. On the one night she agrees to go to a party with them she is attacked by the mutinous bats only to be saved by a handsome stranger who can seemingly frighten them away. This is where the story turned for me and I became engrossed.
Nadine doesn’t share her visions with anyone, not even her other best friend Cheryl for fear of being committed for insanity. This I believe worked well for the story as a whole. So, the impossibly good looking Micah saves her, and when he touches her they are both jolted by a surge of coldness.
Victor disappears from her visions and they are now replaced with visions of Gods and Goddesses. On the urging of Cheryl, Nadine applies to be a medical intern and a trip to drop off her resume results in her bumping into real, live Victor. Only it isn’t him, or is it? This Victor is cold and distant and when she touches him she gets the same jolt she gets with Micah, only this time it’s warmth she feels.
The story unfolds, the gods have killed other gods, towns are being destroyed and Cheryl is MIA. Micah has to leave and Nadine, despite her better judgement is getting a little closer to the thorny Victor. One night changes everything and Victor, Micah and Nadine have to flee for their lives.
This is where is gets super good. The story unfolding has action, horror, demons, bats and double crossing to end all double crossing. I didn’t know which way was up and it was a thrill ride. What I loved about this book was it’s dystopian feel of a post apocalyptic world with a non too shameful love triangle. The action is fast and furious once the story gets in full swing and while I guessed some of the story, there were somethings that shocked me.
If you are a lover of New Adult, Dystopian love stories this is a must. What confused me in the beginning was explained by the end. I liked liked it very much. I also had a smile on my face that it didn’t end in one of those ‘I can’t wait a year to find out’ endings, rather it left you satisfied but with questions that you know will be (hopefully) answered in the next story. I couldn’t wait to read Soul Oath….
Wow! I really don't know what to say about, Destiny Gift. It's definitely an intense read. You have to truly dedicate yourself to the reading of it. It's not a light-weight book you can just skim through. It requires serious attention and contemplation. There's so much going on at any one time, that you really have to pay attention to keep up. I mean this in a good way. I just want you to be prepared to be totally immersed.
The world has ended, as we know it, and the only safe place in New York City, is inside the gates of NYU, where Nadine, our heroine, is a student. Just traveling outside the gates of the university to go home, is unsafe. The streets are full of criminals and the skies are full of huge, flying, killer bats. The sky is no longer blue, it's dark as night all the time, and pollution has fouled everything. Inside their homes, people are relatively safe but there are guards at the doors of the buildings and people travel by car so as not to be attacked by the bats.
Nadine begins to have visions where her, and a handsome boy named, Victor, are in love. She starts to hope the visions come more often as she only feels truly happy in them. Victor's a sweet, loving boy, and he lives in a world where the sun shines, there is clean water and flowers bloom in the meadows. In her real life, Nadine meets Micah. He's very handsome and intriguing but he's not Victor. Nadine knows it's silly to love a boy only alive in her visions but she can't help herself.
Soon, she runs into Victor in real life, but he's nothing like he is in her visions. He's cold and rude, and wants nothing to do with her. Strangely, both Micah and Victor feel consuming pain that only Nadine's touch can relieve. Suddenly, the three of them find themselves linked, whether they want to be, or not. Even when both boys start to be nice to Nadine, she doesn't know if they're really interested in her, or only how she can help with their pain.
Also, once Victor shows up, Nadine's visions change and she begins to 'see' ancient gods and goddesses. She learns their names, who they are and, most importantly, which ones are good, and which ones are evil. She's not sure why she's suddenly seeing them but she feels that she's supposed to do something. She just has to figure out what that is. After a deadly bat attack at Nadine's apartment, Micah, Victor and Nadine flee, and start on a journey together to try and find out what the visions mean.
As I said, this is an intense book. There's a bit of romance but the true center of the book, is the relationship between Nadine, Micah and Victor, and how they help each other figure out Nadine's visions, and what they're meant to accomplish. Unique, a bit overwhelming at times, and totally encompassing.
I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book. But, since the idea of a girl dreaming about a boy and finding him in reality sounded so interesting, I decided to give it a shot. And, wow, did this book blow my mind! Two hot guys, a fascinating mythology, and a huge secret made Destiny Gift a fantastic read.
The world building in this book was brilliant. The atmosphere of a dark and sinister world was spot on. And the mythology that was introduced and how it was tied to the state of the world was wonderfully done. I'm happy to say that I found not one hole in the world building.
Nadine was a likable heroine. She is very easy to relate to. She was a normal girl who became caught up in a massive conflict between gods. She held her own and refused to back down to anyone. She wasn't the most memorable heroine as I wanted to see a little more fire in her, to see her fighting back. Maybe we'll see that in the next book. But, regardless of that, I still really liked her character.
Victor was kind of confusing. He was so sweet in Nadine's dreams, but when he appears in reality, that goes down the tubes. But, even when he was acting like a jerk, I could still see that he was a good guy. And he did have a reason to act the way he did. By the end, I was starting to fall for him.
There was another guy in the book, Micah. Where Victor was sweet, he was smoldering. Loved him. He was brilliant.
The romance wasn't precisely a love triangle. It was obvious where Nadine heart lay. But, there was a potential for a love triangle. In this book, that factor wasn't very intense. It was the beginning stages and the author took her time in developing the romance. I thought it was very well done and I can't wait to see how it plays out. After the revelation at the end of this book, I don't know how that will work out, but we'll see.
The plot was fast paced. There were many twists and turns. And tons of secrets. At the end, there was a massive revelation that completely blew me away. Oh my goodness, I never saw it coming. When I thought the series was going to go one way, this revelation totally threw it into another. Ugh, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I need to find out what happens next!
Destiny Gift was a brilliant NA paranormal romance. Secrets, twists, hot guys, and the promise of romance make this book just fabulous. If you're looking for a great NA paranormal read, you must read this book!

'Destiny Gift' is the first book in a New Adult paranormal romance series that follows leading lady Nadine as she struggles to find balance between her job, college classes, and the realistic visions she's been having for about nine months now. In her visions, the world is a different place - beautiful, bright, and alive - instead of the decaying wasteland that makes up her reality. Also present in her visions is the gorgeous man of her dreams, Victor Gianni. Nadine longs for her visions to disappear so she can lead a normal life, but she refuses to give up Victor. Things change in an instant when Nadine accidentally meets Victor in real life - and he is far from the man she has been seeing in her visions. Fearing for her sanity and longing to know what's really happening, Nadine follows vague directions along with rude version of Victor and stumbles upon an ancient creed that explains her visions along with the darkness and evil that is threatening to destroy her and her world.
This was a really interesting and original novel that had me hooked from the first paragraph. Nadine is a great main character. She's smart, devoted to her friends and family, and determined to do what's right for those she loves, even if it means giving up her own dreams. She deals with her visions in a way that most of us would - reveling in the daydreams with Victor but hating how she has no control over when they appear to her. She experiences a lot of character growth and maturing throughout the novel as she discovers the truth behind her visions and accepts her fate. The plot of the story isn't anything completely authentic, but the author does a great job at molding the history of the creed along with the various forms of evil and the characters that are enmeshed in the story. I enjoyed reading about the supernatural aspects of the plot and hope that we are able to learn even more about it in the next installment of the series. The writing was fast paced and exciting, woven in with some mystery and romance, and definitely kept me turning the pages eagerly. Overall, this was a great paranormal romance and a wonderful start to what promises to be an intriguing new series.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Hello! Today the blog has a review of Soul Oath, two-book trilogy Everlast. I read synopsis of the trilogy called my attention, so I decided to start from scratch and delve into this very dark future in our world.
The first book is very good, if you were like me it was the first time they read something Haygert Juliana, read Gift Destiny, definitely. In this book we meet Nadine, who has dreams about Victor, a guy that does not exist for her but a good day encounters with, really!. And it is here where the real journey of our protagonist begins. This very well written, and it’s very cool, with a plot that draws you to the second book, as the tour is indicated Soul Oath.
Soul Oath, is deeper, and while at points gives you answers to questions you had in the first book, in others, leads to ways to lure the last book. Any doubt this very well thought out by the author as my guiding the reader.
Hell, one NY in the disaster, love triangles, and if we add the mythology, a path that could bring light or permanently sink in hell, n makes you feel a swirl of emotions with the characters, and if in the first book you were wondering if Victor was Victor’s dreams Nadine. because it was so different than in dreams and when that something more would come. This feeling that romance goes and that includes someone else Micah. A love triangle amidst the mess in which they find both Victor and so Micah same as our protagonist, Nadine.
Although I became a fan of Victor, I must admit that Micah, this book took. So I think the fans will be happy with it.
I like the ingenuity of the author, I think a well-defined world, every member knew where to place it. The characters speak for themselves. They have personality and at times you see the evolution of the characters.
It is a new adult book with a mythological world well designed and here we can see more. And he mixed with a post-apocalyptic world was a whole: WAO!

I very much enjoyed Destiny Gift and can't wait to read the rest of the series. It has been 30 years since the world has fallen into darkness and decay, with death, disease, murder, and every other kind of evil loosed to throw the world into complete chaos. This is the story of Nadine, Victor, and Micah who are brought together due to their strong auras. Nadine has visions, beginning with those of Victor and eventually visions of things that have happened in the past and directions she has to decide whether to follow now. Victor and Micah both suffer from some strange illness which brings intense pain and which Nadine is able to heal when necessary.
Outside of the last two books I have read (which have been my favorites by far this year), I found Destiny Gift to be much more original than everything else I have read in a long time. It is a paranormal story with a few steamy, but clean scenes. I would say that Nadine is a typical heroine, in that she isn't really one, but I liked her. I bought into her character and could feel her confusion and frustration over her visions as well as the fear that she is hallucinating and going insane. I understood her fear in the beginning of the story when she wanted to get help from the psychiatrist, but at the same time, didn't want to lose her visions of Victor. I thought Victor and Micah were both well written, hot characters. I can't wait to read the rest of the series and see how everything unfolds.
The story was well written. It flows very well and at a good pace. There was a time in the middle where I found myself wishing it would move a little faster and get to the point, but once it did, the story took off, and I couldn't stop reading. I read the entire book in one day (although I'm off work due to surgery and had nothing else to do but read). The characters are well developed. The setting was very nicely written so that I could completely close my eyes and submerge myself in the world that Ms. Haygert created.
I will definitely read the rest of the series and highly recommend for anyone who enjoys paranormal fiction.

I was really excited to read this book but once I'd read the first chapter, I thought I was going to be disappointed.
There was nothing wrong with the first chapter but for me, I just couldn't get into it. And I stopped reading. For the next day or so, I thought I wasn't even going to carry on (and I've never not finished a book before). But then I changed my mind, and I'm so glad I did!
I really liked the early parts of the book. It was slow and descriptive but I felt it really helped build up the story. Had it been rushed to the stages where , I don't think the story would have had the same edge.
This was all credit to the writing ability of the author, who I thought did great at setting the scene and describing every vision and every moment in the book.
The build up in the book was really interesting, and I felt none of it was wasted. All the seemingly small moments () had meant something when the book came to an end.
Now Micah and Victor drove me insane and made me love them in equal measures! They both sounded dreamy but their mood swings were so frustrating!
I loved the second half of the book.
The ending was great too; . I can't wait to read more.
Destiny Gift really took me on a fun suspenseful ride. I really enjoyed it too. This book really has a bit of everything, we have some cool fantasy/mythology in it, with her visions, it's also a real life type dystopian feel too, In New York City, it's all darkness (all over in fact) Its more of a new adult category I would say, college age and with the college environment. I really loved the really cool twist at the end, it got me really excited for this story, and for the next book.
As for the characters, I really liked Victor, a lot more than I liked Micah, something about Micah just put me off, but I will say I liked Nadines vision version of Victor better than the real life one. I did start to like Micah better by the end, and in fact was rooting for him too.
I liked Nadine most of the time, she was a bit clueless sometimes, but over all I still liked her. I was confused at times but it all came together at the end, and now that I read this book, I see it was more than likely planned out that way. It was brilliant. It is very well written, and to me is a very different type of paranormal, lots that happened I did not see coming for sure.
The Gods in this book I was confused on who was who some of the time, but it was not that big of a deal, I was able to catch on for the most part, lol.
This book did lack romance, there was some fantasies that Nadine had about Victor, and that's just about all, but I am not big on the romance in books, so it was fine with me. I think there is going to be more in the next book, at least it seems like it to me.
I highly recommend this book, and give it 5 out of 5 stars for sure.
Disclaimer: I received this book in exchange for my honest review and opinion.
First: I must confess I am not into an urban fantasy and dystopia books, I asked to review this book in order I get out of my comfort zone. And guess what? It’s worthy.
Destiny Gift is a story about a world in darkness, sinister and disasters everywhere. Nadine is a NYU student who wants to be a doctor in order help her family. She studies and works, she hasn’t time for dating, at least in the real world, but she usually has visions about a guy she doesn’t know, Victor Gianni a really nice guy and she’s falling in love with him… so far so good.
But everything goes wild when Micah enters in the picture, he’s a mysterious guy, he usually shows up when Nadine least expect him. Suddenly Nadine’s visions turned up in something else: disaster’s premonitions and fights between mystical gods and goddesses.
Do you think mythology is bored? Not in this case. Juliana spiced up it with love triangles, mysteries, actions scenes and more. Every time I thought I knew something Juliana changed it completely. I didn’t want put this book down.
How stars deserve this book? Let’s see
Amazing storyline? Check. Lovely and well written characters? Check. Mysterious and bad boy character? Check. Cute and lovely boy character? Check. Bad ass female character? Check.

Um.. I guess I like a little bit urban fantasy books. I'm dying for read more about this series
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side. Firstly I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this book. Well, to be honest I loved this book!!! Just loved it!!! This year I read another series with a resembling concept (The Book of Beings Series by Liz Seach) and maybe many of you have read that and if you haven’t then you should because it’s an awesome series. So when I started reading this book I thought that it would be a replica of Liz’s book but man oh man, this book just turned out to be awesome-sauce and knocked me over. The world building is remarkable and the tango of mythology with the post-apocalyptic genre made me go swoon while I read this book. There is the perfect blend of mystery and paranormal romance and it made the read very interesting. The characters are well developed and I liked Nadine though her character had the potential of developing even more and hope to see that development in the sequel. I hated Victor at first because of his attitude and arrogance but later on I fell in love with him. Micah is sexy and hot and I just loved him from the very first. The supporting characters also had their own charm which increased the entertainment value of this read. The writing style of the author is so much comfortable that I just lost myself within the plot and got connected with the characters instantly. There is action, mystery, the post-apocalyptic world has many surprises for the readers and you’ll be shocked on the revelations of the grave secrets. The concept of a girl seeing a boy in dreams then meeting him in reality interested me and the reason behind all of this kept me hooked in the story. A totally recommended read for ya all and hope that you guys will love it just like I did.
