At my age, I stay away from books dealing with the end of anything. Discovered Through the Storm when reading Kyle Pratt’s newsletter I received from his book Grandma’s House, a most intriguing and baffling story. The storm is a straight forward story of a man trying to reach his two sons alone at home. Sounds so simple but becomes anything but with all the obstacles he encounters. Both sons are having their own problems dealing with the aftermath created by The Storm. Pratt follows each giving the reader three different unbelievable journeys filled with twists, turns and dangers. Of course, it’s well written with characters so real they made me feel all the anguish and fear they were facing. An excellent read!

Through The Storm by Kyle Pratt, is an exciting story cleverly told through the eyes of each member of a family as they do their best to cope, and for some to get back home, when solar flares knock out all power and technology. Each character is real and well developed. You can understand and feel the fear and guilt felt by some of the character's in this well written story. This was an engaging book. The dogs were an added touch. It is fast-paced and skillfully written. Some of the twists and turns will take you totally by surprise. I very much enjoyed reading this. I will anxiously await the next one. This is the first book of Mr. Pratt's I have read. It won't be the last. Thanks Mr. Pratt for a great read.

Through the Storm - a review by Rosemary Kenny

An apocalyptic against-the-odds tale with a twist, Kyle Pratt's Through the Storm tells of a father, (Neal) and his two sons' (Drake and Conner), epic battles to reach the sanctuary of home after a solar storm's emissions reach Earth and meltdown of all technology causes a predictable Armageddon.
So far, so standard end-of-the-world novel, but then the triple narrative and short chapters was managed in such a way that one could easily follow who the protagonist was and the location of each at the time, making this a quick and enjoyable read overall.

I wasn't really impressed with the way so many tropes of the genre were included - the looting, the stand-offs between Neal or Conner (depending which scene) and armed agressors, trying to save the innocent, encounters with authority who are helpless to protect society, the scientists/Governments being unable to do anything to restore anything like normality and order and the Army having to establish martial law to save citizens from total carnage as the food/water/medicines run out....oh and the fact there are always Marines somewhere in the 'heroes' background or currently in those they meet who are trying to do 'the right thing'.

That said, the characters were engaging and I found it charming that Neal would take Ginger, [a dog tied up and starving where the owner had died], along despite struggling to feed himself. I also like Drake's courage as a youngster left alone in thinking of his young neighbour Ashley, who turned out to be alone and at risk from looters, yet despite his attraction to her, behaving as a 'gentleman' and giving her shelter and protection and the way she coped with the loss of her parents. Conner was the typical rites-of-passage member of the family (although so was Drake in a lesser way), as he overcame the loss of his vehicle and trekked so far without succumbing to self-pity or selfishness when he rescued Madison and didn't abandon her even when she tried to be independent and failed, even side-tracking from his route home to check on her family, who turned out to be dead anyway.

Naturally they all get home, (with the help of a couple of Pastors/ministers who are saving the innocent as you'd expect, along the way) and it was satisfying, though sad, naturally, when having finally made it, shots ring out and Drake fires into the dark, not knowing the strangers in the shadows are his elder brother and his father, who is fatally shot - was Drake his Dad's murderer?...of course not, but it still means the brothers are alone in this new bad world (their mother was murdered in a mugging before the start of the book). After Pastor Wayne reads the burial service at Neal's funeral the book has a [horrible] cliff-hanger ending that spoils it for me, as clearly the reader is now meant to buy the inevitable sequel.

I received a complimentary copy of this book so that I could give an honest review.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. There have been countless books written about what would happen if a catastrophic event shut down all electronics on Earth. Usually they are set well after the event occurred. "Through the Storm (The Solar Storms #1)", however, starts just before the event and shows how fast civilization as we know it would collapse. The story follows a family of a father and his two sons and their ensuing struggle. Neal Evans, the father still grieving over the death of his wife, is at a conference and Connor, the oldest son, is away from home hunting when the event occurs. Drake, a high school freshman, is home alone on the farm and does not realize anything is wrong until hours after the event. I had not really considered how fast people would panic and therefore how fast the situation would turn dangerous. Kyle Pratt's style moves the story quickly but includes enough detail to keep readers caring about the Evans family's survival. This book is the first in the "Solar Storms" series. Its publication date was September 2017 and no date has been announced for other books in the series. Pratt's other series is called "Strengthen What Remains" and has concluded.

An EMP has knocked out the electricity for the world and changed life as we know it. With no electricity you can't use credit cards, no lights, cars will not start, and airplanes will fall from the sky. This is an OMG scenario that makes people stop and think, what would I do? There's a severe shortage of food, water and normal everyday people become animalistic to save themselves and their families. The main characters, a father and two son, each have their own perspective on what's happening an how to deal with it. I don't want to say too much and spoil the story, but if you like end of the world scenarios. I highly recommend this book. It's a roller coaster ride and you will find yourself holding your breath, the story becomes so intense. I enjoyed this book so much the author has now become a favorite.

I should have started reading this book earlier in the day. I couldn't put it down and am too old for finishing a book at 4AM! Kyle Pratt has a way of pulling the reader into the story and making the reader feel as though you are right there with the characters!
A widowed father with two teenage sons who needs a bit of time to himself. The young men 16 & 18 left to care for the farm and the animals. The oldest decides to go hunting almost 200 miles away leaving the youngest with all the responsibilities at the farm when the CME's hit earth.
Very well done and will keep you reading.

Sore feet. Tired legs. Good dogs!

The solar storm leaves leaves muscles aching as everyone must navigate without cars. The family, composed of father and two sons, are spread many miles apart when the solar storms strike. The boys become men and learn true responsibility while the dad races to get to his kids. It is an apocalypse coming of age story with plenty of twists and turns. Good read.

The author built tension through the story by moving the characters closer geographically to the home farm. Separated by a solar storm and emotional wounds, they realized their need for the family and the value of each member. The short chapters rotating between the father and two sons was a bit annoying at the start but worked well the last half of the book. Realistically their plight could easily happen in our technology based society today.

Through the Storm

What an awesome book. Loved it.....

Best prayer ever.
“Lord, You tell us that neither death nor life, angels, demons, powers, height or depth … that nothing can separate us from Your love. I know that You prepared a place for my dad and that he is with You now, so I’m not going to let my heart be troubled. Thank You, Lord, for such a good father.

A Solid Start to this Apocalypse Series

I think the author’s take on what would happen during an “end of the world as we know it” scenario is solid.

It’s well written and provides enough details to make the characters seem realistic.

The ending was compelling enough to keep reading the series.

I couldn’t stop reading this story of a father and his sons who are in separate places when a solar storm takes out all electronics. I felt a lot of it was very realistic. It made me think about what I would do in that situation. I am looking forward to the next installment!

Great read

There are lots and lots of books in this genre but very few authors who write as well as Kyle Pratt. He is a competent writer who peoples his books with with characters you care about. He tells a great story and maintains suspense throughout.

I love "end of the world as we know it" books and when I read this I went searching for the others in the series. Pratt knows how to tell a tale. He kept my interest and had me sitting with the book when I should have been doing something else, entirely.

Another post-apocalyptic page-turner from Kyle Pratt. There's lot of fast-paced action, but also strong, well-developed characters. I found it hard to put the book down.

A rehash of a very common theme.

Not nearly enough character development in the start of the book. No depth to the plot. Nothing to make this book stand out.
