"I haven’t always been a writer. My parents are writers and my brother is a writer, and I resisted that as long as I could. When I was 17, I hopped in a band’s van and I went on tour for a summer, and that was it, that was what I wanted to do. I ran a record label for 10 years, a small indie punk label. I did everything in music that you can do that doesn’t involve having musical ability. Eventually the music business, probably in a similar way to comics, will just start to break your heart, and I realized one day that I kind of hated music. I was resigned to thinking, if I’m going to be involved in music forever, I’m going to hate it for the rest of my life. I just stopped. I stopped having any sort of business with music, any involvement.

I read comics my whole life, so I just naturally fell back into another medium that is marginalized and hard to make a living in."

Paige is playing D&D with her friends when these shady guys knock on the door. Turns out they used to rob banks with her dad. Only problem is they are idiots. So what's a kid to do? Rob the bank first to keep her dad out of prison. Irreverent and fun. Paige is definitely a character to root for.

If the Superior Foes of Spider-Man had children, they would be in this book. Also reminiscent of Matt Fraction and David Aja's run on Hawkeye, both in look and tone. Fans of Nick Spencer will love this book.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank is everything you want in a story. You'll laugh, be in shock, maybe even cry a bit. The story strives to tell a compelling tale about kids doing things no kids should even be THINKING about but the reasoning is what makes it so powerful.

So 4 friends meet 4 grown up assholes who begin to harass them. Paige, the main character, tells them to basically fuck off. When the story grows and start to see the link to her father and family the story just expands in wonderful ways. The four friends are on a mission to safe Paige's father's life in a lot of ways. With twist and turns, a lot of humor, and a ending that'll leave you in many different emotions, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank is a roller-coaster of a ride.

Good: The humor is some of the best this year. I'd honestly say I don't think I've laughed this much in a comic in a very long time. The way the kids talk to each other feels so REAL but they don't try to sugar coat the themes. This is a story about robbing a bank, obviously, and of course other illegal things come with it. The humor, the story, the excellent pacing, and the ending all deliver in ways I can only hope most stories do. Oh and the art is freaking perfect. For this style of like young and fun yet still gloomy and dark, it flows perfectly with the themes and story being presented.

Bad: Nothing. I loved it all.

This is easily top 10 comics of the year for me. Every once in awhile you read a issue and you know the rest of the story is just going to suck you in and not let go. That's what this did and I'm very glad it did. Matthew Rosenberg has hit it out of the park on this one. A 5 out of 5.

Before I started this I wasn't sure how ...serious it was going to be I guess. And basically the answer is that it starts out very comedic and then by the end you're just sitting there like WELL THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY. It works very well though. I like how every issue starts out with all the kids hanging out playing a game and then moves on to the meatier part of the plot. And despite dealing with some heavy issues the comedic is absolutely perfect through the entire thing, I found myself laughing out loud several times right up til the end. It reminded me a lot of Matt Fraction's run on Hawkeye, both in the story style and the art style / layout which I absolutely LOVE. I would definitely recommend this, it was a lot of fun.

"4 Kids Walk Into A Bank" is what would happen if a gritty crime film starred a dysfunctional group of endearingly vulgar 12-year olds. The comic drifts into so many genres and themes and tones that it feels like it should be disorienting but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Every single page is consistently gorgeous, colorful, and pulls you into a world that feels tangible and lived-in. The layouts of the panels are never stagnant, and Tyler Boss' art and design work is really something special. His mastery of a familiar-yet-distinct aesthetic is so compelling, and the way he pulls you from page to page is nothing short of magical. For a story that relies on a *lot* of dialogue, nothing about this comic feels clunky or overly wordy, and Boss' layouts do a fabulous job at making even the densest pages seem clear and exciting.

It also helps that Matthew Rosenberg's writing never misses a beat. His dialogue is fast and clipped, and I can't remember the last time a graphic novel had me literally laughing out loud as often as this one did. Rosenberg's characterization of his cast is spot-on, and clearly outlines who each character is within just a couple lines of dialogue. Others have noted that the comic is very heavy on the dialogue, but it never once felt like overkill to me. Rosenberg keeps things moving and energetic, and I was so invested in his characters that I had no issues with the wordiness of it. Thomas Mauer's lettering helps the text really pop too, and makes Rosenberg's already crisp dialogue flow across the page that much more.

I could pick apart all the reasons why this is comic is magical and thrilling and deeply emotional, but really, you should just read it yourself. "4 Kids Walk Into A Bank" does just about everything right, and any critiques I have are so nit-picky that they're not even worth going into because everything else so beautifully overshadows it. The whole comic feels like a Tarantino film with the cast of Stephen King's "IT" and the stylish aesthetics of Wes Anderson, and I loved every page of it. It's one of the best and most uniquely satisfying graphic novels I have read in a long time and I am going to incessantly nag everyone I know until they pick it up and read it for themselves.

The opening chapters are hilarious and make full and innovative use of the graphic novel format. I've read a lot of Scooby gang books in the past few weeks, and this is the first group of kids that seem real and interesting. The ending veers away from satisfying but is earned and makes sense.

Kind of a mixed bag.
There were a lot of things I liked about this book, there were a few things that I didn’t like.

11 year old Paige finds out her dad is planning to rob a bank with some old friends of his who recently got out of jail. So what’s the best way to stop him? Do it before he does!
I really liked the art for this series! It had some amazing panels. It was really cool how they used movement in a few of them, or how they portrayed a four way conversation. At one point there are two 24panel pages between all the characters as they are using a wiki talkie and it’s hilarious! The colors are also fantastic but really, the panels and how they set them up is the biggest take away from this book. It had great one liners, it had some really random moments/jokes. I’d say a mix between Stranger Things and Reservoir Dogs. Overall, fun read.
However, I couldn’t get past how young they were. They were suppose to be eleven and it didn’t feel that way. Even the way they characters spoke, I feel they should have been closer to fifteen. At one point they’re trying to drive a car! Fifteen would have been perfect. I don’t know why this bugged me so much, it’s just a comic, it’s allowed to be over the top and abstract. But there were just one too many things for me that were slightly too ridiculous and the age thing doesn’t help any of it. I also don’t know how I feel about the end. Like you can see the turning point in the character but I wish they’d given then more of a reason for it? I’m not sure. Oddly enough I am excited to reread it and see if I can catch anything new this time. It was also still a good read, it’s funny and the colors and art are worth rereading it.

A beautifully crafted comic with a style reminiscent of Fraction’s Hawkeye and Spencer’s Superior Foes. The conversations between the four kids will make you smile and even laugh out loud. However, it felt like the actual bank robbery storyline got in the way of a slice of life look into the mundane but still fantasy inspired minds and interactions of our children. I was thinking 5 stars all the way until the last issue where the conclusion exponentially escalated and felt a bit rushed.

In summary, it’s a very fun read and I’d love to see more books from this creative team.

Splendid. The immense creative energy of the writing could have easily overwhelmed the art, but the art (page composition, visual ideas) is just as inventive, sparkling, and strong, reminding me very much of Chris Ware’s “architecture design” style. Unfortunately, Chris Ware keeps wanting to write his own books, that are as depressing bores as his art is magnificent. So I very much preferred this book to anything by Ware.

Loved the perfect balance between sense of humor and drama. This could be categorized as a quirky dark comedy.

Hot damn! This story hits its emotional beats PERFECTLY. I will not elaborate on that. Each character is well fleshed out (though I wish Stretch had more to participate in), and the art makes me wish more comics had fun.

Honestly this is a fantastic example of showing that you should never judge something for its art style.

What happens when four middle-school age kids figure out that one of their dads is being recruited back to a life of crime for a bank heist? Nothing good. I was blown away by this graphic novel, which starts funny and ends up heartbreaking, though we do get a little hopeful closure for some characters in the epilogue. A crystal clear demonstration of the consequences of immature decision making – and I don’t mean immature as an insult, I mean it as a descriptor. I really appreciated how the creative team didn’t give anyone an easy out from the reality of what goes down. Loved it the first time, re-read it again recently and enjoyed it just as much.

Haven't read a lot of Matthew Rosenberg, who is perhaps best known for writing some X-Men comics before Jonathan Hickman’s massive relaunch, this creator-owned comic he co-created for Black Mask Comics was a recommendation for my monthly comic book club. I would like to say if you’re someone who wants to get into comic books without any superhero content, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank is one of the essential reads for any newcomers.

During a day of playing Dungeons & Dragons, Paige and her three friends get an unexpected visit from four sinister men who barge into her house. When her father steps in to prevent any more chaos, Paige suspects that he may have a previous connection with the men. When she finds out that his father is getting involved an upcoming bank heist alongside the criminals, Paige decides to recruit her own friends into robbing back the same bank first in an attempt to save her father.

In terms of comparing this title to other recent crime comics, you could see it fitting into the territory of Ed Brubaker’s work such as Cruel Summer. However, whilst Brubaker's storytelling is bleaker with his characters going down a tragic fate, Rosenberg approaches this story with a quirky sensibility through the lens of the four young protagonists, who are clearly outsiders with their own distinct issues and although they may butt heads, they always hang out.

Although the bank heist becomes the climax and we see these youngsters who are clearly out of their depth prepping to pull such a task, the majority of the five issues shows how mundane their lives are, in both a comical and dramatic fashion. From dealing with bullies in their school, to a couple of radio conversations between friends accidentally receiving a transmission from a drug dealer who calls himself Doctor Gloryhole. Along with the witty interactions between the foursome such as Berger continuing to be a bad influence and Walter being so socially awkward and vomits during any tense moment, Rosenberg never forgets the emotional core is Paige’s relationship with her father, which is both loving and difficult.

Reminiscent of David Aja’s work on Hawkeye, Tyler Boss’ art pushes the boundaries of what you can do with comics. Throughout the book, he continuously experiments with panel layouts with some conversations visualised through tiny panels featuring talking heads, whilst drawing full splash pages that show how tiny his characters are in situations that are out of their reach. Boss is also great at visual comedy as the initial pages of each issue experiments with different art-styles, such as a dramatization of a D&D campaign, whilst there are some sneaky pop culture references like All-Star Superman, one of my all-time favourite comics.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank is a brilliant darkly-comic crime comic featuring a likeable bunch of kids who brings out a lot of laughs, but never loses its heartfelt message and the consequences of robbing a bank.

I thought I was reading the wrong book at first but it was a fun way of introducing the gang of kids. Some seems like Paige is the leader, and has some concerns for her Dad when a gang of 4 thugs turn up at her home.
They need to take the play co-operation into the real world to overcome this latest enemy .
I loved the story, the humour. Poor Berger seems to be the butt of their fun but it appears he also brings it on themselves and he is part of the group. Not that they are universally liked by the wider school population.
A comic tale of 11 year old kids caught up in a crime caper it seems with Paige’s Dad somehow involved. The illustrations are first rate and the comedy is both subtle and rolling about the floor funny.
It reminded me of a classic from my own childhood. Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kastner.
The best comic format story I have read and it is only part 1 with many more episodes to follow in the developing story. Where many struggle with compact text in lines, sentences and paragraphs. This is an excellent example of how well this art form can work. As stated I loved it.

Dec 20, 2017: ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! If I could get twenty more volumes out of this, I'd be in heaven. 4 Kids has it all: excellent writing that makes you believe in good storytelling again; great pacing for the plot and humour, which is always hard to pull off in graphic novel format; lovable characters that are relatable on all the wrong levels; stylish art to match the action; and the atmospheric blend of mundane and surreal that boggles the mind. If you want to find out why four kids decide to rob a bank and what comes out of it, jump on this brilliant comic now! A complete story in one book - it made me cry with joy.

Clever use of the comics medium plus witty dialogue equals a fun read. This story is basically a Tarantino movie with 12-year-old protagonists. I was never bored, and virtually every page was a surprise. The characterization is a bit thin, but it’s only a five issue comic, so I can mostly forgive that. Be sure not to skip the variant covers at the end. Truly amazing movie poster homages. Lots of creative energy throughout this book.

My two favorite parts: “Fanta” and “Jocks.”

What’s a teenage kid to do when a band of criminals show up at her door and she learns that her father is about to rob a bank? Why, rob the bank herself to protect her father, of course!

“4 Kids Walk into a Bank” is irreverent, laugh out loud funny, and full of suspense. On the back cover, Kieron Gillen says “Imagine Tarantino does Goonies. And excellent.” I think “Ocean’s 11” meets “The Goonies” is more appropriate.

This is one of those graphic novels that is begging to be made into a movie. Only worry is that with the main characters being four kids, you would have to cast them right (and then you worry about people calling it some sort of rip-off of Stranger Things). But this is a heist book and not a science fiction book, so it's ok.

This reminded me of a more-violent "Stranger Things," with a tight group of kids banding together to stick it to the bad guys and achieve the impossible with the supposed ease of playing a D&D game.

Hilarious and action-packed, it's easy to get swept up in the characters' cleverness and creativity as they essentially gamify the idea of robbing a bank. When reality sweeps in with an emotional punch, it leaves the reader as stunned as the characters.

All in all, a short, fun and surprisingly intense read. A great intro to graphic novels.

This was super fun. A lot of unexpected twists and turns, and the writing made me chuckle a bunch. It's tough to write a story about a group of kids without having the content be too juvenile, but this struck the right balance. The artwork was also pretty fantastic. Ended a little abruptly, but other than that it was basically perfect.

Kids hatch schemes. Hell, I still remember making plans to catch whoever robbed the convenience store up the road.

I was 5.

Usually, these schemes are forgotten, victims of a snowball fight or a new toy. But what if the plans came to fruition?

4 Kids plays with this idea. These kids want to rob a bank to keep Paige's dad from doing it and going to jail. The comic goes between kids having fun together and crime narrative. It walks that tightrope masterfully.

Hilarious and heartfelt.

Ah, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank is awesome and highly entertaining. It's bound to offend people too, which makes it even better. These four kids are Paige and her three male friends all eleven years old or so. Paige finds out that her dad's former friends are back in town to rob a bank with Paige's dad and Paige decides to stop this by robbing the bank first. She doesn't want to lose her dad and her nerd friends decide to help. Sounds heroic, right? Except the comic is full of violence, swearing and pissing off. These kids are great, nasty and dumb and this all has consequences. Not all of them make it out alive, so beware. Yet, the comic isn't violent hellfest, but more like it's about extremely dark humor and awesome ideas. My only complain is about the ending. It's too abrupt and short to convey anything and this would've deserved better. Something dark and something witty.

I liked the simplistic and slightly robotic art. The dull colors work so well with the imagery and create this odd and off-putting feeling, very Daria-like even. The panels are monotonic, but awesome and the best part is when the kids roleplay with weird toys. There's something very offensive in the comic and you can feel it through the art and it's hard to pull this off well. The kids are actual kids and the outcome of it all is so fitting too and no, heroic escapades hardly ever work in real life. I do recommend this!

It started out funny and interesting, but it got boring right away. I liked some of the creative intros to each issue/chapter, but the rest wasn’t as good. One of the biggest issues was the annoying choice in design with the Black kid’s small sized font. Yes I got he’s talking low because he’s not confident and is the typical introvert, but because of the size of the font it slowed the pace down and enough to make it harder and harder to want to move on with the story and hating any time the kid spoke. The other issue I didn’t care much for the characters so I had to stop after a few chapters. I skipped ahead to the end and feel I didn’t miss anything. It seems the creators were more interested in style both artistic and writing over anything else and so eventually the characters just were as important or became stylized. Their behavior was just kind of dull. Maybe it just isn’t for me. One thing I noticed I found weird is that the father looks like he’s in his mid forties and is supposedly 32 years old. Just weird. Some of the villains were older and they looked like they were in their 30’s. Perhaps it was something to it I missed.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank

A graphic novel about a group of kids (11 and 12 years olds) that decide to rob a bank. The kids are hanging out at Paige's house when they first encounter a group of ex-cons her father knows. The kids figure out that the thugs are planning to rob a bank and want to involve her father. Since the ex-cons are not that bright, Paige decides she and her friends should rob the bank first to help out her father.

This is a crime caper that also deals with friendships and growing up. The kids are each smart and unique, and are basically outcasts from their peers. I liked the honesty and humor in the story, but it did get pretty dark. This story does have some bawdy humor, bad language, and a mature theme, so not really for younger kids.

I received an ebook version of this book from Diamond Book Distributors, Black Mask Studios, and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I almost didn't finish this book. It is very odd, but very compelling.

It is full of fbombs, and other swears, but that wasn't the problem I had with it at first.

It is that each chapter opens with the kids playing, and talking while they are playing. Sometimes they are playing D&D, or some role playing game. Sometimes it is an arcade game, and one time it was just them playing in the yard. Once I got used to these odd beginnings, then I really got into it.

It really does read like what would happen if some kids decided to robe a bank.

It won't say it is funny or fun, but it is compelling.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
