In this fast-paced and gripping story about Ryder, a boy struggling with a broken family, JP Turner leads her readers by the hand into the darkness of emotional abuse and bullying, before dragging them back into the light.

Ryder’s father is a successful businessman, who lives in a beautiful white house with perfectly trimmed landscaping in a matching white cul-de-sac in an affluent neighborhood with an equally successful wife. But what goes on behind closed doors makes Ryder question everything, even himself. His father’s insidious behavior escalates, birthing an ominous shadow, hell-bent on haunting Ryder.

First time author, JP Turner, doesn’t disappoint with her debut emotional-rollercoaster novel.

Shadowfighter is an emotional, heartfelt story of a child dealing with the darkness a custody battle can create. Instead of trying to win against each other, parents should make decisions based on the well being of the child. Seems obvious, but with just a bit of bitter feelings it can become a battle in which no one wins. The author did a remarkable job of presenting a story which shows the reality of these custody problems. Parenting a child is enough of a challenge without adding complications and bitter feelings that the child ends up in the middle of. A raw and emotional tale of reality. well done.

This book evoked a lot of emotions for me - frustration being key. How does someone treat an innocent child in this way? Reading about Ryder's inner thoughts, fears, and coping mechanisms shed some light on what it is like to be in this situation. The characters are well developed, they feel REAL, not just some two-dimensional constructs. I don't read a lot of YA fiction, but this was a good choice. It'll make you think about what you say and how you treat a younger sibling, a child, or a friend. It's a fairly quick and easy read with deep subject matter.

Darkness can be defeated

This book is about how a boy navigates the muddy waters of divorce and custody battles. His father is abusive and criticizes the boy and his mother. The boy is surrounded by darkness on his visits to his father's house. His mother helps him with a counselor and a teacher at school also helps him. The boy learns techniques to employ against the darkness. This is an interesting view on how to cope with difficulties. There were quite a few typos but nothing bad enough to detract from the story.
