Twenty-five years ago, Conrad Drake’s life was shattered. Now, he lives a life of solitude, devoid of modern conveniences and things that do his soul no good. He has found contentment in a life of hard work and skilled preparation. He depends on no one.
When he begins to settle into life on his homestead, away from mainstream life, two strange turn of events change his life once again. His plans to prepare for disaster are sent into high-gear as the world around him tumbles into lawlessness.
This was a good story with some realistic characters and problems. NO Zombies! People are evil enough without crazy dead ones threatening us. I recommend you read this if you like survivor stories that sound like something that could really happen. Lots of suspense and tension.
I really struggled to keep my attention in the story. But the author simply doesn't know human nature nor the physics of nature. First, he says that the sun shot a meteor like object which exploded in the atmosphere creating an EMP. The sun doesn't do that. The sun can create a Corona Mass Ejection, CME which can disrupt the same way an EMP can. But that is a wave of energy, not an explosion in the atmosphere. The main character kept a radio in a Faraday cage. Great. When he took it out and plugged it in, it worked. Where did he get the electricity? When he went on his rescue attempt, he totally left the chickens, goats, and other farm animals penned and on their own. It was a very disappointing book and I will not be reading the second of the series.
I'm a bit of a hunter And a bit of are survivalist. So this story didn't ring quite true.. It's quite obvious the author really doesn't know anything about survival about hunting about shooting someone was gonna kill you. It's also quite obvious he doesn't know really anything about guns rifle shotguns pistols.. Nobody in there right mind schools into a gun fight carrying a pistol when they have an option of a shotgun or rifle he went or 22 rifle take out Nobody i n there right minds goes into a gun fight carrying a pistol when they have an option of a rifle Shogun or even 22 rifle ,will take out anybody that has a pistol..
Realistic and harrowing. A ride you will remember!!!😍😍😍
Scary realistic. This thriller is hard to put down. Conrad is a man who you would definitely want to run into as a survivalist and a man. His determination to leave behind the societal norms because of his broken heart and rebuild his life according to his own personal opinion regarding the way the world seemed to be heading. The harshness of his new reality preparing him for an unfortunate future. Will our hero be able to save his family? This is a well written and disturbingly real experience! 🤔 So many obstacles, so little time. Seriously though...enjoy!😊
I don't mind a series of books. Seems like that mostly what you get now a days. But at least give the book you are reading some form of an ending. I don't mind a little cliffhanger but this was ridiculous. The main plot and focus of this book just stops so you have to buy the next one. And this one wasn't that good to start with. I generally don't give bad reviews. If I didn't like it I let others make their own decisions. I think it's unfair to knock a book just because you don't like it and others might. But this one got to me.
I have read several books on this theme. Most I have been unable to finish regardless on how hard I tried I couldn't finish them. This one has a believable story line, doesn't get overly descriptive and had enough twists and turns to hold my interest. I am actually drawn into wanting to read book two. I didn't give it a five star because it starts off a little slow.
Take the time to think about what it could be like to suddenly live without every creature comfort. No electricity, no running water, no food nor communications technology outside of the range of your voice
The end is coming and the maybe the end of humanity as we know it. A great read... Would be a Great 3-part mini series movie . Drama, danger, humor, romance and so well written.
put past differences aside when times are terrible
Never know when a bicycle and a backpack might be needed. the hero tries to find his ex wife in a city. too many people today do not know how to survive without conviences. I am one of those who will die because delivery of medicines will stop. And my bug out location is too far away. plan ahead for whatever the disaster that is coming will do to the truckers, all of our heroes.
The gangs of even smaller towns and cities seem awfully well organized to take over so quickly after the event. The main character seemed very indecisive and too easily persuaded to try to rescue the woman who abandoned him years earlier. His son was reckless and a liability. There was a lot of errors and repetitiveness about the book which an editor and a Thesaurus might help.
I stumbled upon this author, via Kindle Unlimited. I read this, and found the characters easy to follow, the storyline is decidedly interesting, and the writing captivating. Conrad is an interesting fellow, Liam is as well, that you want to cheer for. I have found book 2, and will start it next!
The book was a bit unbelievable. Tshtf would make people much more aggressive and violent. Characters peddled what was described as a long way without much difficulty. Going off without the rifle was stupid, handguns have a very limited range and are inaccurate because of it!
I liked the book. I liked the characters. The descriptions were clear and knowledgeable. The only thing I did not like about this book is the fact that it has a cliff hanger and the stories did not finish. There was no ending. I really do not like that.
Number one, I worried about his cows ,chickens and goats through the whole book. Number two, Liam insisted on going back for his mother but left without a whimper. There was more personality in the son than the dad. Not too sure about getting the second book
A sad disappointment! The story is filled with a lot of detail that doesn't all hang together. But the sad thing is that it's really only part of a story that leaves you hanging!
Great info for all preppers. So much info and a great read. I have been a 0430034 for ma y years. store for when needed. This book gave me so much more info to keep and prep for when I really need!
This book is mostly emotions not action, although there is some action. I felt way too much verbage was devoted to why and not how. I think I will pass on book two.
Interesting. Gave some good ideas about what to expect, if there ever was EMP event.
Character relationships realistic and well developed. Believable story line. A few grammatical errors, missing words really bothered this former editor.
Ya know, I like reading what happens after the end of the world as we know it, but I can't do these see you thought I was crazy, but turns out I was right all along books. I couldn't get past the first chapter, totally turned me off.
I did enjoy this end of the world EMP adventure! I liked the characters & story ideas & found it over all a good read! I will look for more by this writer & hope to finish this series!
