The Beast has become a man and is heading towards his final goal. As a child he hunted the frightened night creatures, left a musky trail and tore flesh from splintered bones. But the Beast has invaded the bodies of several people. Now, as Barry, he has a wife and young family to protect. A chance meeting with a beautiful young Indian leads him to a Navajo reservation where he discovers the astounding possibility of the Great Leap which will take them both into another dimension. The Beast needs to go. Barry the man has to stay. Concludes the trilogy which started with The Orphan and included The Captive.

Failures in films are easy to find. Like the wrist watch from Gandalf in the LOR or the sun glasses of Django in Quentin Tarantinos Western Epos.
In books it's much more complicated. You have to read with your brain and not only with your eyes. In i had it missed the first time in the end of 1980's. A "vegetarian". Also if the culture in 2023 would not be like this and the word "vegetarian" would not pop up an all occations, I would have missed it also this time.

On page 70 Bo is mentioning that he is "vegetarian". Ok no point. But the Vegetarian Society in UK has been founded in 1944. And thats what the date when this word first showed up.

The book has been written in 1982. So the word was common then. But the book plot playes in 1937 / 1938. So six years before the word in UK came up. Nice find in my opinion.

Review of the last part
Sometimes I wonder where writers got their names for the characters. Sometimes. I read The Beast and thought about a coincidence. The main character ist George Beaumont. George is a split character. Not also is he not good in writing. He has also a second beeing. In this case the Beast within. Who jumps into my mind in this case. The two main characters in Stephen King's The Dark Half. Thaddeus Beaumont and Georg Stark. Also a bad writer and a strong beeing. But it will be a coincidence.

Reading the book til the end is beeing like stuck in a sandstorm. You may ´want to move and to do something else, maybe more important, but you can not leave. I now know why I hadn't read the book til the end in the first case. It may have his good times. But the last part is to much. The beast is searching for his companion. And on the other hand Bo the guy who had been healed from the second beast is in search for his love. Why they met in the canyon at the place where the Indians settled is not really clear. Also it is not clear how Bo found the way there except for his trance travel.

So I read it till the end, and I was just sad because of the many open questions. Where came the beasts from. Where do they go. And a lot others. Thinking that there may had been a forth part if Robert had not dyed could be a explanation. It was good to read. But the end was not impressive.

I was not sure where the author was going with his. I disagreed with how it was going and so dragged my feet by reading in small amounts. Then, yesterday, I decided to put aside my prejudices and just to read. An amazing journey unfolded for me, taking me back to memories of my own childhood. Descriptions of places and feelings and hopes and anguished were laid out wonderfully. This concluded the series in a great way, left so much open to contemplate and a conclusion which was pretty much everyone lives happily ever after, except for a couple of folks. Twists and turns abounded like the back roads of Arizona. I am glad I took the time and effort to indulge in this.

The truth of the beast is revealed and it's mate is searching for it so they can return home. One of the characters receives a radical treatment for his life threatening illness and gets a new chance at life while having to deal with discovering love after many years and having to choose between her and the son he lost. It really makes more sense when you read the story. Highly recommended by a largely unknown author.
