The Time Seller

Rate this book
The year is 1017. A mysterious giant terrorizes small villages near the city of Sredets, the last remaining stronghold of the First Bulgarian Empire. Disgraced solider Simeon Exarch is reluctantly drawn into the fight and manages to slay the giant. But his victory comes at a price—the deaths of his wife, Irina, and son, Cyril.

A thousand years later, Simeon lives on, having harnessed the giant’s powers to prolong his life and those of his friends. Then one evening, he notices a woman who looks exactly like Irina. From the sun-shaped birthmark on her neck to the smell of her body and the fact that she and his late wife share the same name, Simeon becomes convinced that the woman is his late wife and holds the key to eternal life.

Kidnapped on her wedding night, Irina has no memories of the past. Her husband, Miles, will do anything to rescue her from her captor. Soon, they will both learn just how deep their love for each other goes, as well as what happens when one crosses the threshold from life to death.

The Time Seller is a unique and intriguing story. The characters are easy to identify with and I found myself hoping the best for all of them. Simeon, Kamen, Boril, Irina and Miles are ordinary people forced into unusual and challenging circumstances. The story is easy to follow and complex enough to keep you reading to find out what happens. Keogh has a great balance between description and character making it easy to visualize the surroundings but still keep invested in the action. There were a few parts that were hard to read, one violent, one more of a medical one but other than that it was an enjoyable read.

Excellent book! Many twists and turns makes it for an exciting read, that kept us guessing until the very end.
Now just hurry up and write the next book Mr. Keogh.

I received this book from Voracious Readers for an honest review. I really liked the concept of this book. The idea that you can live forever by utilizing magic to harvest life or time from others. I liked the juxtaposition between the life of Simeon and the life of Anton. It was nice to see where it started. However as this book is the first in a series I found there were a lot of unanswered questions! So it was interesting enough for me to look into the possibility of reading further in order to get some of the answer I'm looking for! Like does Irina ever remember the past? What the heck happened on that bridge in Tarnovo? How does Simeon turn from being compassionate to being the more ruthless Anton? So I shall seek out the next book at some point and see if some of those questions are answered.

I give this a 3.5. I liked the characters and the settings of the book, and especially enjoyed Keogh's take on time travel/time control. There was a lot of interesting material, but the main reason this got a lower rating is that I didn't feel like there was any overarching goal of any type. Yes, several characters all had their own personal objectives, but I never felt like the story was really going anywhere specific. It's worth giving a try though and I think I'll give the second book a go when it comes out.

A fantastic start to a series I can't wait to read on! Masterfully switches between two time periods, both described so clearly that I'm transported. Enjoyed the challenge of figuring out the rules and constraints of the magic alongside the characters. Excited for the next book so I can continue this adventure!
