Empowered: Rebel

Rate this book
What do you do when a conspiracy suppresses super powers?

Mathilda Brandt fights to keep her fellow Empowered friends and the Imbued refugees from Sanctuary alive and safe. Environmental disasters are ravaging the world. Her former master, the secretive government agency known as Support, hunts her and the other rogue Empowered and Imbued across the world, seeking to capture or kill them. Only the strange Dark-Net, an extra-dimensional road, keeps Mat and her friends free.

Mat is also desperate to find her mother, who until a few months ago Mat thought was dead. Her mother’s fate is somehow intertwined with the people hunting her, and Mat wants to learn how.

When the Dark-Net begins to fail, Mat realizes she’ll have to do the last thing she ever wanted to do: lead a desperate rebellion to save her mother and free the world.

Empowered: Rebel is the fourth book in Dale Ivan Smith’s The Empowered series.

Ok, first off I want it known that I did not get Dale Ivan Smith’s Empowered: Rebel just because of its really totally gorgeous cover. I’ve actually read (and reviewed) the prior books in his The Empowered series, which I totally enjoyed, so I was looking forward to this book 4 series-ender even before I saw said gorgeous cover. I was not at all disappointed by the story. It was simply superb and the perfect way to tie things off. Mathilda (Mat) Brandt has been a superb character and her desperate rebellion to free the world (and to save her mother) when the Dark-Net begins to fail? Wow. Glorious adventure. A really glorious book. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend.

I was really looking forward to reading the last book in the series as the first 3 kept building up and building up. I liked the story for the most part in book 4 but was very disappointed in the end. It kept building up and although the story was good and had an exciting fights up until the crescendo then it was anti-climactic and let me down in the last page or two and left unanswered questions. I won't get into details and spoil it for new readers but for me I was disappointed.

Mat and company save the world

Never like finishing a book that I want more from.
I will be keeping an eye out for more from you in the future.
Keep writing about interesting and fantastic places and well developed characters for me to enjoy.

Rebel is a good read

This book sucked me in by the second chapter. I couldn't put it down until I was done. The action builds like a stairway. Good easy read, flows nicely. The ending is a bit abrupt, but comes after much murder and mayhem by the bad guys. Very exciting.

Most disappointing of the series. The finale was winding up to be something fierce and just fizzled.

Another marvellous, imaginative and gripping book to finish the Empowered series from Dale Ivan Smith. I have loved the story of Mat, from the first book, Renegade, through Agent, Traitor, Renegade and now Rebel, when we see her turning out to be the saviour of the world.
Dale has built a strange and intriguing world where some people have powers but this is not necessarily seen as a good thing. As you would expect, some Empowered are heroes, some are villains, but which are which depends on your point of view in Mat's reality. Nothing in these books is black or white but this makes everything more mysterious and interesting.
The characters are developed, their actions and emotions absolutely right for their different personalities, and Mat, Alex and Keisha feel real to me. The powers of every Empowered are beautifully imagined and described, so much so that I feel as though I am watching a film full of magnificent special effects when I read these books.
I am sad that the series has finished but I hope that Dale will return to Mat in the future to find out where she goes from here.
This series will make much more sense if read in order so treat yourself and start at the beginning.
