Kate Macdonald

I am a longtime fan of Anne of Green Gables and a collector of literary cookbooks (seriously, I have over 70).
And let me tell you - it is lovely!
The book starts off strong with the recipes separated into four sections. The first three come from the classic books - Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, and Anne of Windy Poplars. And the last section comes from L.M. Montgomery's kitchen.
Now, you may be wondering, how did Kate Macdonald come upon recipes from L.M. Montgomery (original author of the series).
Well, let me tell you one of the coolest aspects of this book - Macdonald is the granddaughter of L.M. Montgomery! What a connection!
But you aren't here to read about cool history tidbits, let's get into the recipes.
I like how there's a full page color photo of the dish and the layout of the recipes is well done. Additionally, I like the Anne of Green Gables quotes scattered throughout the book and how each recipe was accompanied by an additional quote.
For example, the chocolate caramels from Anne of Green Gables includes this quote from Chapter 3
Similarly, while some of the recipes for the fourth section (the section based on L.M. Montgomery's section) had connections to her life, some of the relations were unclear to me.
While it was a bit fun to have the recipes separated by book, it did result in a rather uneven and scattered distribution of recipes. Book 1 had 15 recipes, Book 2 had 9, Book 3 had 3 and L.M. Montgomery's section had just 4 - for a total of 31 recipes. Which does feel a bit sparse for a cookbook.
I feel like Kate Macdonald should have opened the cookbook to all of the Anne of Green Gables books - really do a deep dive into the foods mentioned throughout the eight books. Heck, Macdonald could have even branched out to the other books written by Montgomery.
That way, there would be enough recipes for the usual layout for recipes (Appetizers, salads, meals, etc.) just for ease of use in the kitchen and the cookbook would feel more cohesive (less scattered).
Overall, I do rather like this cookbook. There are areas that can be improved but having a cookbook written by the granddaughter of LM Montgomery is just so cool. I will keep this treasured book on my literary cookbook shelf forever.

Right off the bat, I think the recipes are mostly well chosen. .
"Marilla was right, you must keep your wits about you in the kitchen."

However, some of the literary connections felt more like a stretch, like this quote included for the Corn Soufflé.
"I had one chocolate caramel once two years ago and it was simply delicious."
I suppose the corn souffle is yellow which connects to sunshiny but that feels tenuous Best. Personally, I would have preferred a direct book-to-cookbook relationship for all of the recipes chosen - if it's a food Anne eats, sees or mentions, then throw it into the book.
"The world doesn't seem such a howling wilderness as it did last night. I'm so glad it's a sunshiny morning."

While I have found Kate Macdonald's The Anne of Green Gables Cookbook delightful and the featured recipes both interesting and always simply conceptualised (which is especially appreciated since the book is indeed and clearly geared towards children cooking either by themselves or with adult supervision) personally, although I did very much love the many quotations from Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of Windy Poplars, I certainly would have wanted a bit more information on L.M. Montgomery herself to have been included (especially considering that Kate Macdonald is L.M. Montgomery's granddaughter), not to mention that I also do find it a trifle sad that none of the many dainties housekeeper Susan Baker creates and makes in the later Anne books, in especially Rainbow Valley and Anne of Ingleside are mentioned and shown as recipes. However and that all being said, the thirty-one recipes of The Anne of Green Gables Cookbook all and sundry do look very much appealing, with mostly natural ingredients being used, and indeed, they often precisely mirror the very foods encountered in the novels and actually concocted by Anne herself (such as Anne's famous liniment cake, flavoured with vanilla extract of course and not anodyne liniment as in Anne of Green Gables). Highly recommended for fans of the Anne of Green Gables series (and for those of you who are vegan, while there are only about six recipes in The Anne of Green Gables Cookbook that are entirely plant based, that is if one does not use the thousand island dressing for the Splendid Lettuce Salad, the vast majority of the presented recipes are in fact lacto/ovo vegetarian and most could definitely pretty easily be veganised, as it would simply be a matter of replacing eggs and dairy products with a suitable vegan alternative, and in my opinion, even the majority of the seven or so meat based recipes could likely and easily be made vegan by for example, replacing the ground beef in the Shepherd's Pie with cooked and seasoned beans and using seitan or tofu instead of the bacon in Matthew Cuthbert's Yummy Biscuit Sandwich).

Two words: raspberry cordial.
If you adored Anne of Green Gables, then you know the infamous raspberry cordial/wine scene. I was nine or ten when I first read Anne, and afterwards asked my mom where we could get some raspberry cordial. I wanted to try that beautiful drink that Diana Barry was so obsessed with. Of course, I also wanted to try red currant wine (the stuff Diana has mistaken for raspberry cordial), but I knew better than to ask for that.
At the time, my mom was very much a Marilla to my flights-of-fancy Anne, so the idea was immediately shot down. I had apple juice, and the super-sweet syrup we made fruit punch with. There was no need for raspberry cordial.
Well, this gorgeous cookbook has a few dozen scrumptious-looking recipes, including one for raspberry cordial!!!! Guess who just bought a few bags of frozen raspberries??!!
I was very impressed by this cookbook. There are four sections: recipes from Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Windy Poplars, and recipes from L.M. Montgomery's kitchen. Every recipe is accompanied by a picture, which manages to give you an old-fashioned, whimsical Anne feeling. There are desserts, salads, and even a few seafood recipes, which is great for my pescatarian diet.
I can't wait to cook up some Anne-with-an-e worthy dishes.

Cute cover on this one. Great representation of the subject matter. Good use of graphics and great composition and title work.
So I actually thought this was a new cook book when I requested it from NetGalley, but alas it appears to be from 1985. Although it does mention inside the cover that
This is a revised and expanded edition of The Anne of Green Gables Cookbook published in 1985 by Oxford University Press.
So I guess there is some new material here. I have to admit I am not a fan of when NetGalley does this. There should be some mention in the descriptions that this is a reissue or something.
Moving on...I am a HUGE fan of Anne Of Green Gables. I am not sure you can call yourself a Canadian and not be. So you can imagine how excited I was to get my hands on this book. This is a relatively short little book coming in at just over 100 pages. The graphics and photos are beautiful, and the book is broken up into a few different chapters (COOKING TIPS, RECIPES FROM ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, RECIPES FROM ANNE OF AVONLEA, RECIPES FROM ANNE OF WINDY POPLARS, RECIPES FROM L.M. MONTGOMERY’S KITCHEN). The recipes are easy to follow and include quotes from different books in the series. If you are a fan of this series or know someone that is then this would make a great gift. Two thumbs up from yours truly.

Based on the Anne of Green Gables series, this cookbook was a joy to read. The recipes were divided by the different books and included the quote where it was mentioned in the book. There were pictures of the food and it included beautiful scenes from Green Gables. This was aimed at children, but any Anne fan would enjoy the cookbook. 👒🍰🥗☕️

I had the original printed version of this book in the early 2000's, but I never really used it. The recipes were interesting but with how they were sorted I couldn't find certain recipes that were mentioned in specific books in the series. In this version they fixed that issue and I liked it much better. In these pages you'll find the cordial that Anne set Diana drunk on, the monkey face cookies that Davy and Dora loved, as well as Miss Ellen's pound cake. Unfortunately the recipes don't go further than foods that are found in "Anne of Windy Poplars" though we do get a section of recipes from L.M. Montgomery's kitchen. This is a definite buy for anyone who has ever wondered just what are they talking about when they mention specific foods in the series.

A delightful cookbook that will be cherished!
I very much enjoyed THE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES COOKBOOK. Reading this treasure took me back to a loving place, and made me long for simpler times.
This book starts with an introduction from author Kate Macdonald, daughter of Anne of Green Gables author, L.M. Montgomery. While this cookbook will be a favorite among adults, in the introduction, Ms. Macdonald is clearly speaking to young (child) cooks, with instructions for safety, and cleanliness (though good reminders for us adult cooks as well). The introduction is followed by helpful cooking tips and terms.
Each chapter of THE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES COOKBOOK is based on a different series. Chapter 1 - Recipes from Anne of Green Gables, Chapter 2 – Recipes from Anne of Avonlea, Chapter 3 – Recipes from Anne of Windy Poplars, and finally Chapter 4 – Recipes from L.M. I received this cookbook from my grandparents in 1988. I have two copies-a paperback copy for cooking and a hardcover for keeping on my shelf. I absolutely loved this cookbook. It has many of the recipes mentioned in the books like Anne's liniment cake, Raspberry Cordial (not the red currant wine Diana got drunk on), Afternoon Ruby Tea Biscuits, and Marilla's Plum Pudding and sauce (without the mouse). The recipes are accompanied by drawings of scenes from the novels and quotes from the books. This book was published to piggyback on the popularity of the mini-series (Megan Follows IS Anne).
I've read and used this cookbook many times over the years. The recipes are easy enough for a 10 year old with help to make. I used this cookbook recently when looking for a literary historical recipe for a historical cooking challenge. (I ended up picking out several quotes for chocolate cake and Anne's dream about the Goblin to make an early 1900s devil's food cake).

I got this as a NetGalley ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love Anne of Green Gables. I have lost track of how many times I've read the series created by L. M. Montgomery. I was super excited to see this cookbook, written by Montgomery's descendant, and more so when I opened it to read the various dishes sprinkled across my beloved series... not to mention the raspberry cordial.
While the premise is worthy of five stars, the recipes themselves are not something I would make at home.
I love Anne of Green Gables. I have lost track of how many times I've read the series created by L. M. Montgomery. The author took a lot of liberties, the first recipe being for Puffy Apple Dumplings, a reference to the White Way of Delight preceding it was only one of many extrapolated ideas for food stuffs, but overall it's a solid effort.
I've only had time to test out Diana Barry's Favorite Raspberry Cordial (YUM!):
Mrs. Irvin's Delicious Shortbread (DELICIOUS!):
And the Green Gables Shepherd's Pie (also YUM!):
But I intend to try my hand at several others, the Tantalizing Raspberry Tarts heading that list:
There's nothing groundbreaking here, but for anyone who loves Anne Shirley, it's a pretty fun idea.

This is a lovely little cookbook for youngsters and the young at heart who have been introduced to the world of Anne of Green Gables. Most of the recipes are for dishes mentioned in one or another of the first four books. A new chapter has been added with recipes from the personal collection of L.M. Montgomery. Photos show the dishes simply displayed. The measurements and methods use equipment found in the modern kitchen. Each recipe is accompanied by an appropriate quote from the Anne books. I have owned the original version for many years and I think this will make a thoughtful gift for the next generation of readers to be charmed by the Anne of Green Gables books.

I received an ARC of this book
I was thrilled to receive this book to review. I had given my daughter a copy when she was younger as we used to read the Green Gable books together and it was always a favourite to watch the TV series on girls night. The book has changed a little with a newer cover and the illustrations seem a lot brighter. The recipes are still very tasty and will always be enjoyed by the family. For lovers of Anne and her beloved Green Gable stories and of good nasty and delicious food. this is a must buy. I recommend this book.

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful book, and this cookbook is a personal favorite of mine! With gorgeous pictures of Prince Edward Island, excerpts from the book, and recipes for foods straight from the novel, this book is a must-have. I highly recommend the baked macaroni! Charming is exactly the right word to describe this cookbook. Designed for children about the age that Anne would have been in the books, these recipes are inspired by the original Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, and Anne of Windy Poplars books. Some of the recipes were inspired by the books themselves, others are straight from L.M. Montgomery’s kitchen. Written by L.M. Montgomery’s granddaughter Kate McDonald, this is a rerelease of the original collection, with a few new recipes.
Safety First
In the introduction, it explains the importance of safety in the kitchen, along with a few tips and hints, and other general suggestions. After the introduction is a page of Cooking Tips, and then another page of Cooking Terms. An excellent beginning for junior cooks.
The first set of recipes are inspired by the original Anne of Green Gables book. Each of the recipes comes with a full page picture of the recipe and the inspiration behind the recipe with a quote and reference to the particular chapter where the quote can be found. I like that each of the recipes also includes Prep Time, Total Time and Yield.
Each of the recipes has clear instructions and is easy-to-follow. I like that even the cake recipes don’t call for a store-bought mix. It’s made from scratch.

There are a lot of excellent recipes in this collection, many of which you will never see elsewhere, like the Cowcumber Boats. This fun snack is cucumber slices with a tuna topping, called Cowcumber because this was the old English way of pronouncing the French word for cucumber.
The next selection of recipes is from Anne of Windy Poplars. This is a short collection of some lovely tea snacks and desserts. After which is a selection of recipes straight from L.M. Montgomery’s kitchen. The last recipe in the collection, Cavendish Catsup, is appropriate as it is inspired by the childhood home of L.M. Montgomery, Cavendish PEI, famous for their potato production.
In all I was very happy with this cookbook, it’s an excellent beginning cookbook for a young person, especially one who is reading the Anne Collection. Because macaroons are one of my favourites, I have included the coconut macaroons recipe with the original review on RecipesNow! The Reviews And Recipes Magazine .

Safety First
In the introduction, it explains the importance of safety in the kitchen, along with a few tips and hints, and other general suggestions. After the introduction is a page of Cooking Tips, and then another page of Cooking Terms. An excellent beginning for junior cooks.
The first set of recipes are inspired by the original Anne of Green Gables book. Each of the recipes comes with a full page picture of the recipe and the inspiration behind the recipe with a quote and reference to the particular chapter where the quote can be found. I like that each of the recipes also includes Prep Time, Total Time and Yield.
Each of the recipes has clear instructions and is easy-to-follow. I like that even the cake recipes don’t call for a store-bought mix. It’s made from scratch.

I was happy to receive a courtesy copy of this beautifully illustrated reissue of Kate Macdonald's 1985 book, The Anne of Green Gables Cookbook. I was even happier to see that many of the recipes are gluten-free or readily adapted to gluten-free! And I was also happy to see that celery and cucumber are evidently popular in the P.E.I. kitchen, since I love both.
This book is clearly targeted to middle grade to high school age readers who are learning to cook. The recipes are simple enough so that any child age eleven or older, with a bit of low-key supervision, will be able to have success. (I'm pretty sure grown-ups can enjoy them, too.) There is a brief set of useful tips at the start and a glossary for common cooking terms like folding, kneading and simmering. Photos for each dish help the young cook visualize how the finished dish should look.
These recipes are drawn from foods and beverages mentioned in the books Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, and Anne of Windy Poplars. I've only tried two of the recipes thus far (Raspberry Cordial and the best and yummiest egg salad sandwich, using gluten-free bread and goat butter or ghee!) but a number of the recipes, while simple and homespun, look quite lovely. The vegetable soup is up next for me (part of my Instant Pot project, actually. But that's going to be another review...) And who knows, if I can figure out how to adapt it, Anne's Liniment Cake might be after that. (Sans Liniment, I promise.) Then I long to try to adapt the Rebecca Dew-inspired Orange Angel Cake. (Yes, that's a lot of eggs to be experimenting with. And you guys wonder why I want to raise chickens?)

If you grew up reading the Anne series then this book needs very little introduction. Surely you will remember how often food played a part in the young orphan’s life and if you don’t then you will still have no worry because the author has lovingly added quotes from the various books with each recipe to refresh your memory as to why this particular item is important. By the time you’re done flipping through the colorful, easy to read pages and salivating over the dishes presented you will want to bake up some treats then settle in with the books to enjoy them in a thoroughly more interactive way and relive this aspect of your childhood.
There are four sections of recipes. The first 3 are from the books and they are broken down by title with quotes from the chapters attached to the recipes. The last are recipes from L. M. Montgomery herself including an Americanized version of an old Irish staple – Shepard’s Pie.
All of the recipes are easy to follow, contain ingredients that will not be hard to come by and include pictures to help anyone who is cooking impaired so they can compare their dish to what it’s supposed to look like and gauge how close they got. I tried a few of these and found them quite easy to follow though I do admit to cooking regularly from scratch so I’m not exactly a beginner. Cooking tips and terms have been included as well as some advice from a seasoned cook so if carefully read and followed no worries should be had.
This collection was originally published in 1985 and has been updated with 11 new recipes and since this has been put together by none other than L. M. Montgomery’s own granddaughter it feels safe to say the integrity of what the author originally created has been kept intact.
If you are a “kindred spirit” of Anne’s then why shouldn’t you pick this up and join in her culinary adventures?

I absolutely adore Anne of Green Gables. I've lost track how many times I've read them over the years, and have tried to pass that love on to my daughters as well. Therefore, I was thrilled to receive this cookbook!! The first pass through the book was just seeing what was included (Raspberry Cordial!!!), reading the quotes from the books and so on. I then moved on to the important part--the recipes!
The first recipe we tried was the Chocolate Goblin's Food Cake. Who can forget Anne's dream of being chased by a fearful goblin with a layer cake for a head?! Well, this one was well worth the inclusion!! Moist and decadent, it was everything a chocolate layer cake should be.
While there are a few recipes that kind of made me scratch my head such as Sunshiny Corn Souffle or Matthew Cuthbert's Yummy Biscuit Sandwich (which were not even alluded to in the books!), it does include many recipes specifically referenced in the books such as Chocolate Caramels, Raspberry Tarts, Marilla's Plum Pudding and Davy and Dora's Monkey Faces.
The recipes are divided into Recipes from Anne of Green Gables, Recipes from Anne of Avonlea, Recipes from Anne of Windy Poplars and Recipes from L. M. Montgomery's Kitchen. I like this division as it is easy to look up recipes from a specific book.
This is a great book for any Anne of Green Gables fan. The recipes are good and easy to make, and the book itself is just delightful! I am happy to wholeheartedly recommend it!

If you know anyone in your life that LOVES Anne of Green Gables? This is the book to get for them!
Its really cute, the pictures are nice, the recipes great and generally just a beautiful little thing to add to anyone that loves the actual stories!
The entire book is made up in a very "Anne" way -if you know what i mean- very fitting to the books and is separated by the different Anne books and the recipes mentioned as well as a little section of Montgomery's favourite recipes.
As i said its really nicely done, the recipes are great and if you see this and think it might be for you or someone you know? IT WILL BE!
The only think i found a bit disappointing is how few recipes there actually are and i think that it might have been nice to add a few more "old-fashioned" recipes into at the end of the book, for example of complimentary recipes to try as well or something after Montogmery's favourite recipe section. That would have been nice and added a little something to the book and make it a bit more worth it.
Still overall a fantastic book and i am sure a must get for any Anne fan!

So I guess I have the re-boot of this cookbook that I can't seem to find on Goodreads. From the cover picture here, the new version has been wholly updated with new illustrations and scrumptious food photos. I bought this because, well, my girlfriends and I have Anne of Green Gables themed tea parties where we re-watch the original movies with Megan Follows and drink raspberry cordial and eat biscuits. (Try not to envy how cool we are.) Anyway, when I saw this cookbook, I squealed with utter delight that we could have authentic recipes from the series, including a mix for genuine, raspberry cordial.
Each recipe has a quote from the books to tie it all together along with photos of Prince Edward Island. I have yet to make one of the recipes, but I'm hoping to make the ginger snaps this weekend. My only complaint is the recipes are mostly for tea-time, drinks and snacks. I would have liked to see more salads and main meals to truly live like it's the early 1900's in Prince Edward Island.
