Vaccines: A Reappraisal

Rate this book
Drawing on fifty years of experience caring for children and adults, Dr. Moskowitz examines vaccines and our current policy regarding them. Weaving together a tapestry of observed facts, clinical and basic science research, news reports from the media, and actual cases from his own practice, he offers a systematic review of the subject as a whole. He provides scientific evidence for his clinical impression that the vaccination process, by its very nature, imposes substantial risks of disease, injury, and death that have been persistently denied and covered up by manufacturers, the CDC, and the coterie of doctors who speak for it.With the aim of acknowledging these risks, taking them seriously, understanding them more holistically, and ultimately assessing them on a deeper level, he proposes a nationwide debate based on objective scientific research, including what we already know and what still needs to be investigated in the future. He argues that with no serious public health emergency to justify them, requiring vaccines of everyone deprives us all of genuinely informed consent, and prevents parents from making health-care decisions for our children, basic human rights that we still profess to hold dear. For the present, given the legitimate controversy surrounding the mandates, he proposes that most vaccines simply be made optional and that further research into their risks and benefits be conducted by an independent agency in the public interest, untainted by industry funding, CDC sponsorship, and the quasi-religious sanctimony that is widely invoked on their behalf.

Excellent research-based evidence on how harmful vaccines are. All vaccines harm and some kill. None are worth the risk of damage from the ingredients. We have no business injecting this crap into our babies. Children, babies, and people are maimed and killed from these unnecessary medical treatments. Most are for mild childhood illnesses that are little more than temporary inconveniences. Actually getting a mild childhood disease affords lifelong immunity, unlike vaccines which offer harm with little-to-no lasting immunity. I hope this book starts the dialogue to stop this barbaric practice.

One of Richard Moskowitz's earlier books, "Homeopathic Medicines for Pregnancy & Childbirth" promoted homeopathic nonsense for a range of conditions, including, of all things, "marital discord". So you get a sense of what pseudoscience you're in for in "Vaccines: A Reappraisal".

Moskowitz embraces typical antivaccine tropes in this book, namely that the diseases vaccines prevent weren't really so bad, that vaccines are ineffective, full of nasty "toxins" (the actual toxins produced in large quantities by disease organisms during "natural" infection are something Moskowitz ignores) and somehow cause a bunch of chronic diseases. In making these claims he reveals major ignorance about infectious disease and how vaccines have eliminated or vastly reduced their incidence.

Take measles, which Moskowitz pooh-poohs, despite the several hundred annual deaths, and many more thousands of hospitalizations for serious, sometimes permanent complications measles caused in the era just before measles vaccine was introduced. He claims not only that measles was a mild affliction, but that "natural" infection was helpful in priming the entire immune system. Actually, we now know that measles infection causes a marked _suppression_ of the immune system which can last for years, causing increased susceptibility to infection in general.

The idea that "natural" infection is good because it causes an acute ramping-up of the immune system while vaccination instead results in "chronic infection" (a claim Moskowitz makes in his book) is nonsensical and reveals a stunning lack of knowledge about immunology and infectious disease. Likewise, it is untrue that vaccination causes SIDS, autoimmune diseases, autism etc. despite Moskowitz's evidence-deprived claims.

As you'd expect from a dogged antivaxer (he proudly identifies as such), Moskowitz has since denounced Covid-19 vaccination using a bunch of flawed arguments, including fanning fears that such vaccines will integrate into our DNA and turn us into GMOs, plus conspiracy theories like the ones he promotes in his book.

If you're impressed by the idea that Moskowitz is (or at least, was) a pediatrician, consider that the overwhelming majority of pediatricians and all major pediatric organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics are strong supporters of vaccination. They know about the grievous injuries and deaths caused by diseases like polio, measles, rubella and Hib meningitis that are now uncommon in the era of vaccines. There are excellent sources of free online information about vaccination available, including Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, immunize.org and PKIDS (Parents of Kids With Infectious Diseases).

If I could give this book 10 stars I would. Everyone who cares about children should read it, especially those with a family history of allergies, cancer, and autoimmune disease.

Here is my take after reading the book. I think some vaccines may do some good. But it is clear that the medical establishment has a strong financial conflict of interest which causes it to over promote the benefits and under report the risks of vaccines. The vaccine trials don't seem to have valid control groups, which is a scandal. This muddles the cost-benefit analysis. I think that informed consent is necessary for any medical procedure, including vaccination. Thus, I don't think that vaccines should be mandated.

I’ve felt like my reaction to the flu shot is not a normal reaction but people kept telling me that it was just a strong immune response. I’ve also had a significant increase in my allergy and asthma symptoms as well as showing blood markers of auto-immune disorders. Lately I’ve seen the unerring belief in vaccine safety for the Covid vaccines and people pointing out that most of us cave never investigated childhood vaccines. I realized they were right and I, naturally, set off to correct that hole in my education.

Well, what I’m learning has me believing that my worsening allergy and asthma symptoms are related to the flu shot that has me taken to bed each time I get it. While some books, including the last book I read (Dissolving Illusions) feels a bit heavy in the fear department, this book felt very balanced to me. He’s not against vaccines and says he even believes some vaccines have worked. He simply believes they aren’t as safe as the CDC and vaccine manufactures want us to believe and thinks some vaccines may cause more harm than good. Is it unreasonable to believe that, just like people are predisposed to react to certain medications or foods, there are people who are predisposed to react to vaccines? It is, of course, a medical intervention.

The in-your-face, constant onslaught of propaganda and emotional manipulation tactics used to campaign for the COVID “vaccines” made me raise an eyebrow back in 2020-2021. Though I hate everything about Covid, I am glad it made myself and others question vaccines in general.

This is the third book on vaccine safety I have now read. The information is corroborated clearly between all three, but I found this book to be the best combination of quantifiable information spelled out in a way that is easy to read. The science, research, statistics, and common sense put forth in this book is spotless.

If you are researching the safety and efficacy of vaccines for your children, READ THIS BOOK.
