I read this book after I read book 2, but it just made me like Red and Nova more than I already did.
Red, a former medic in the military and current unlicensed doctor, is riding one night when he passes something on the road. His instincts tell him to turn around and thank goodness he does. There, in the ditch, lay the almost dead body of a young woman who has been brutally beaten.
His training kicks in as he calls members of the local MC that he belongs to to send help. Saving her from the grim reaper, Red becomes immediately attached to Nova, aka Roadkill. He nurses her back to health after performing a complex surgery in a makeshift medical room at the MC compound. The hospital was too far to travel.
When Nova wakes, she can't remember her life, let alone what happened to her. As bits and pieces come back to her,, she discovers she may want to remain in the dark. In the meantime, Red had to claim her as his in order for the host MC President to allow them to stay. Red has now not only become responsible for her, but has now been tasked with starting his own chapter of the MC at his home in Montana.
Unsure if he even wants that kind of responsibility, Red struggles to make up his mind. One thing for sure, he wants Nova! Even in her battered state, he finds himself drawn to her and will kill anyone who tries to hurt her. Things get heated with a dirty sherif and rouge members of a rival gang when they find out Nova is still alive.
Red has to make things right by getting rid of the threat to Nova. She is struggling with being claimed as "property" as well as overhearing the man who she has fallen for sanction a hit. Drama ensues, but we get a happily ever after for the two lovers and a purpose for the new chapter of the MC.
This book kept me engaged and wanting to jump in the book to help Red and his crew. I loved how complex he was. On one hand he was a super hero doctor, saving lives, and on the other he was a ruthless killer in the name of Justice.
