They're stuck on the wrong planet at the wrong time…with each other. They could use some magic.
Aurelian Reva'la A'Qen must choose a life path to follow, or one will be chosen for her. Simple enough – except her dream man doesn’t want her at his side. When Reva hears Aurelian Military Commander T'Van A'Ralle laughing at her with his friends, she's devastated. On impulse, she enters the mysterious new jump device…and is ripped away from her world.
Van soon learns that he was all too hasty in his dismissal of Reva. With an unknown assassin in pursuit, she displays courage and heart. Van discovers his feelings for the fiery strawberry blonde run deeper than he ever dreamed possible.
Can Van convince the woman he scorned to give him another chance, before the assassin eliminates any hope of their returning to the future, together?
REACHING REVA by CJ Cade is titled as the prequel to a 6bk Space Opera romance anthology series A Great Space Race. I have read, enjoyed and posted goodreads reviews of the other titles separately. REACHING REVA connects minimally to other series by CJ Cade - FRONTIERA, LODESTAR, and even A GREAT SPACE RACE (for which this is a prequel) - briefly mentioning the characters and/or settings from the other series. REACHING REVA can easily be read as a standalone novella.
REACHING REVA - Among the platoons of soldiers on the Hamor Military Base, an isolated Aurelian outpost in the Milky Way galaxy, lives Reva’la A’Qen’s/FMC the likable, accepted, yet generally overlooked civilian daughter of the base quartermaster. Reva’s mother died when she was young resulting in her mostly being raised by the teachers and other adults on base. Over the years, Reva has become capable covering for her father during his somewhat frequent overindulgence in alcohol oftentimes completing his duties for him. Reba has watched the base soldiers for years and yearns for something more. T’Van A’Ralle/MMC, one of several Aurelian military Base Commanders posted on Hamor, is stubborn and intelligent, ambitious, hot-headed yet a dedicated leader his soldiers follow willingly. Despite and perhaps due to his maverick methods, Commander Van has been selected to lead a team of soldiers into space to a recently discovered uninhabited planet. Once landed, his team has been ordered to begin setting up camp and claim the land for Aurelia. His group will be among the first Aurelian’s to travel through this precarious time jump - not certain of a safe arrival, of their welcome by the mutant inhabitants, or even of any eventual return to base. It is a mission planned with many unknowns.
Unfortunately I wasn’t particularly pulled into this story after the characters left Hamor Military Base. The story felt a bit disjointed to me after that point. Also, I wasn’t totally convinced by Van’s change in attitude toward Reva. (I wanted him to deserve her more). But perhaps that’s due more to this being a short novella rather than a full length novel.
REACHING REVA is a fast reading Space Opera novella that I believe would be most enjoyed by readers either familiar with SE Smith’s Landings, NM world, Cade's FRONTIERA or LODESTAR series, or readers just looking for a quick escape into a sexy Space Opera romance novella. REACHING REVA isn’t particularly complicated but rather a light 2 hr or so diversion. I have purchased the 2 titles in Cade’s FRONTIERA series and look forward to reading those.
READER CAUTIONS - Violence - Minimal. Think Original Star Trek episodes. Profanity - Yes. Strong language but used rarely. Sexual situations - Yes. Mention of past sexual relationships, and on-scene intimacy occurs between the 2 main characters beginning around the mid-point of the story. **Not recommended for YAs or readers who prefer Clean fiction. Extra characters arrive in the last chapters identified as witches, as a tie-in to another series.
What a fun side trip to Magic, New Mexico. Van has been the bright spot in Reva’s otherwise crummy life. When she overhears him putting her down it almost breaks her. She has to go. When she and Van end up back in time in Magic, New Mexico a place they’ve never heard of they are just lucky the locals know of alien life forms. So now Reva has to deal with being stranded in a different place and time she has to deal with Van being there too. Maybe he will get his head out of his ass and realize just how special she is and what they could be together. It doesn’t matter what planet you are from men are going to make dumb mistakes. Watching Van grovel was a total hoot. This story made me smile.
Well it well written and most would probably enjoy it but it seems this author is just my type but still an excellent writer. Simply she is a sad little thing following around staying a virgin while he dips into his mean supposedly girlfriend and whoever. And as soon as he shows the slightest interest there she is forgiving him after ignoring her and badmouthing her behind her back and having sex with him. Accepting the crumbs she thinks he is willing to throw her way. Simply didn’t like any of the main characters, just don’t find enjoyment reading about those type of males, a good woman deserves better than to wait around for those type of male to grow up and be ready to claim her.
Van and his squad has an important mission. Reva just wants to escape the military outpost, her military father that treats her like she's invisible unless he's too drunk to do his job and has her cover for him, and a broken heart when she overheard her crush - Van- say that she is nothing but a nuisance. Everything goes wrong when Reva sneaks into the pod that will teleport Van and his men to another world. Loved the story, the twists, and the end. Another Magic, New Mexico hit!
This was a hodge-podge of a story with a sadly unlikeable hero and doormat of a heroine with sadly zero character development involved.
The heroine has been panting for the hero for years, he has been rebuffing her and making fun of her and chasing after a woman who would be beneficial for his career. They get transported into the past together, land in secret magical community on Earth. The hero sees the heroine in yoga pants, talks to her for short while and of course realizes how attractive and wonderful and whatnot she is.
Heroine promptly forgets what an ass he has been and enthusiastically falls into his brawny arms.
