Rate this book
This is an alternate cover edition - ASIN: B01GUOB1Z2

In When War Returns, Book #3 of the Beta-Earth Chronicles, everything changes for Dr. Malcolm Renbourn and his Betan wives.

To secure protection from assassins, the scientist-spies of the Collective and the anger of an island liege, Renbourn accepts the title of Duce of Bilan and joins the Parliament of Alma. He bonds with a female Ducei, but unhappily discovers that she is Sasperia Thorwaif, an enhanced mutant with the startling strength of ten men and an overheated metabolism that fuels her resentment against lesser-endowed humans. As a result, she begins a campaign to destroy the Renbourn tribe.

Tribe Renbourn is also drawn into a brewing war against the Lunta of the New-Dome, a High Priestess wanting to force all Almans and immigrants to bow in obedience and conform to her strict religious orthodoxy. When the Prince of Alma, heir to the throne, wants to add a Renbourn wife to his long list of women forced to surrender themselves to his royal will, the foundations of their lives on Beta-Earth are shaken.

Can Tribe Renbourn battle a church, a throne, and a bond-wife bent on tearing them apart?

Immerse yourself in an extraordinary universe revealed by the most original storytelling you’ll ever experience. “Science fiction yes, but so much more.”

Besides his 33 years in the classroom, Dr. Wesley Britton considers his Beta-Earth Chronicles the most important work he’s ever done. “I suppose an author profile is intended to be a good little biography,” Britton says, “but the best way to know who I am is to read my novels.”

Still, a few things you might like to know about Wes include the fact he’s the author of four non-fiction books on espionage in the media, most notably The Encyclopedia of TV Spies (2009). Beginning in 1983, he was a widely published poet, article writer for a number of encyclopedias, and was a noted scholar of American literature. Since those days, for sites like BlogCritics.org and BookPleasures.com, Britton wrote over 500 music, book, an movie reviews. For seven years, he was co-host of online radio's Dave White Presents for which he contributed celebrity interviews with musicians, authors, actors, and entertainment insiders.

Starting in fall 2015, his science fiction series, The Beta-Earth Chronicles, debuted with The Blind Alien. Throughout 2016, four sequels followed including The Blood of Balnakin, When War Returns, A Throne for an Alien, and The Third Earth. Return to Alpha will be the sixth volume of this multi-planetary epic.

Britton earned his doctorate in American Literature at the University of North Texas in 1990. He taught English at Harrisburg Area Community College until his retirement in 2016. He serves on the Board of Directors for Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania. He lives with his one and only wife, Betty, in Harrisburg, PA.

In this, the third of the Chronicles, Malcolm has more adventures than he ever wanted. The book gets a whole ton of excitement and kept me guessing, usually incorrectly, what was going to happen next. Sasperia, who is an important addition to the Renbourn tribe, is a great addition to the book, and if not my favorite character, well, she is probably one with the most surprises! The Chronicles continue to evolve with great writing, some fun humor, and new and exciting science fiction concepts. It continues to address social, economic and political issues but with a whole different slant.

An excellent book that certainly deserves attention. The language is so lofty (and I mean that as a compliment) and flawless that many a time it reminded me of the 18th century English novels I used to read at school. I have been reading the whole series of Beta Earth Chronicles and all I can say is that if you regard yourself as a true science fiction reader then you cannot afford to pass on in this series. Just like the two other books, the third installment is also quite serious and no- nonsense in tone. For those new to the series the prolog offers you with a brief overview of the previous two books, starting from Malcolm's torture, his family and the connections he made thereafter, etc.

I don't know where to start but this novel, right from its structure, plotline, characters as well as style is thoroughly unique for me. I have read a lot of science fiction books but nowhere have I come across such erudite language, multi-dimensional characters as well as a list of the characters involved in the story, including their date of birth and other details. I found it to be a true page-turner and sincerely hope that the author comes up with another installment very soon.

An extremely well thought-out story right from the start. The descriptions of the characters range from serious to humorous - "I joked she must wear special belts to keep her pants on — she had no shape for togs to hang on" - but in any and all cases the author has spared no detail in describing them. Highly recommended for its stark realism and authenticity.

I have been a fan of Mr. Britton's writing style ever since I read The Blood of Balnakin - the Beta Earth Chronicles: Book Two. Since then I have been eagerly waiting to learn more about my favorite character Joline and I am so glad that the author obliged me with a third installment. The story continues to mesmerize me as do the author's writing style. 5 stars all the way!
