Magic broke loose, but the worst is yet to come.

The sea may have been a harsh mistress, but Viktor longs for the challenges of wind and weather, for the sound of waves crashing over his hull. Turned by a Master Vampire, he hates what he’s become, but there’s no escape. Not from Ushuaia that’s turned into a city of bones, or from the Vampire who rules him.

Ketha and eleven other Shifters traveled to Ushuaia to harness the power of an eclipse and were trapped there when the world turned upside down. Ten years later, they’re staying one step ahead of Vampires who blame them for the cataclysm.

With her luck running low, Ketha turns her badly depleted magic on the Vampire assigned to lock her away and gets sucked in by her own spell. Maybe magic can’t save the world, but love might be able to salvage what’s left.

Just my kind of story. The sea, a ship, someone named Viktor to make the story fantastic. He just wants to get back to a life on the sea even though it’s tough. Obviously it’s not going to be easy. Not to be missedn. The audio book has a narrator that has you listening until the end

Deceived: Bitter Harvest, Book One Kindle Edition
by Ann Gimpel
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Deceived is the first book of this series, it's about a world where magic has been used but somehow it has turned things for the worst. Now the Vampires are in charge. Victor is a Vampire that was force to become one but he hates what he's become. Victor regrets that his will to live is so strong and he accepted his sire's blood that turns him into a vampire and a slave for his master. The shifter community has decided to fight the Vampires and help keep humans alive. Ketha and eleven other Shifters traveled to Ushuaia to harness the power of an eclipse but instead they are trapped here as the world is turned upside down. A phenomenal book to read! When I finished this book the words that came to mind is Oh my this story is like having great sex. You feel a warm afterglow of something that's incredibly marvelous. It gives you a memory you have made which you will hold deep inside your self. It's a extraordinaire great book. I have loved and enjoyed reading Ann Gimpel and this story is yet another phenomenal read. Have you ever been so excited about something that you wanted to read it immediately, but at same time you put it off. This book made me feel this way. It's so amazing that each series Ann writes is exciting, captivating and the best entertainment you could want. I know if any of her series are made into a movie it would be a fabulous Blockbuster hit. The characters are totally unique, incredible, lovable and completely new. You will never feel that this book has been done before. There is no other book to reference or to be afraid to reference these characters too.Even her secondary characters are interesting and appealing to read. I really enjoyed Ketha and Victor characters! I was really excited and very anxious to get my hands on this ARC copy. The book has Vampires, Shifters, Sex, Blood&Gore and Romance what’s not to love! It's fast paced but it's becoming one of my favorites. I am beyond happy. I really enjoy it, when I get overly excited about a book and it turns out great. Well…better then what I expected. Thankfully, for myself Ann Gimpel never disappoints or the letdown when it hit would be hard when it’s not as good as you wanted it to be. But that doesn’t happen with Deceived Thank you Ann! I actually picked this book up in bed, around midnight, I thought, well I’ll just read a chapter or two and then go to sleep. Nope,I turned page after page until two hours later, I am still reading until I finish the book. This is a phenomenal book to enjoy!Overall, I really loved reading this book and I'm anxiously waiting to read the second one even more! I've voluntarily read this Advanced Reader Copy because I was captivated by the cover and the blurb regarding the story. The characters here are fantastic from the start. The story is filled with Temptation, Action, Betrayal, and very dark encounters. Ann Gimpel has always been a favorite author of mine since I read the first book written by her. Above is my review which I rated 5 stars and I would have rated it more if it had been possible.

I am a huge huge fan of this author's work having read quite a few of her different series of books and I was so surprised by how different this book is from her other series, surprised and blown away by how amazing it was and how much I adored this book!!!!

This storyline is absolutely amazing, you are surprised with every chapter, i loved the idea of the cataclysm, it blows me away every time I read this author's work I am always baffled by this author's ability to create such imaginative and vivid storylines in a world full of fantasy that is so different to our own but is written in such a way that the reader find themself immersed in this world, feeling like they are part of it. I adore how this story turns out and its nothing like I expected, that another thing I love about the way that this author writes her stories, its never predictable!!!

Omg these characters….. As soon as Viktor appeared on the pages I was drawn to his character, a man fight g yo survive and hating every moment of it but still believing in hope and love. He is such a strong character and I adored reading about him!!! Then we come to Ketha… now there is what you call a strong female lead character…. Not only is she strong magically but she has a strong soul, a strong character that never gives up, is always searching for a way to makes lives better for those under her care, those that she loves, she is so protective with such a big heart with a massive capacity to love!!!

I can't rate this book highly enough!!! I absolutely adored this book and I am so excited to read the next book!!!!

I’m not sure how to rate this book. First off, I’m not into vampire/magical being romances and that’s just me. Second, there was too much insta-love that I just wasn’t feeling, just being told was there. Also didn’t like how all our main protagonists were accomplished pre-events of books (I.e., microbiologist, gifted violinist, veterinarian, history professor, doctor), kinda felt like fuck all you McDonalds workers and farmers- guess you don’t know what it takes to survive. There were only a couple of characters that were well developed. Also glom is not a word I come across a lot and the author used it so much I was quite tired of it and its variations.

Yet on the plus sides, there was a lot of thought put into the plot (so much so the romance almost seems shoe horned after thought). There was also well developed world building with how magic works in this universe. It was an easy read with some originality and that wasn’t so horrible with stereotypes that I got angry and quit.

I’m also torn about how understanding and respectful everyone is. On one hand it’s kind of nice to have open minded and mature emotions in stories like these, but on the other hand it’s just implausible that everyone is just so grounded and introspective. Maybe that’s why even though the author puts a lot of real facts (especially when it comes to geography) in this magic drama it just doesn’t feel right. What group of people under extreme duress could ever be so level headed?

Guess I’m gonna see where this story leads bc I already got this in the package with the next few books…

Viktor Gaelen is a ship’s captain who is captured and turned into a vampire after landing in Ushuaia He hates being a vampire and seeks only the opportunity to flee Uthuaia and his cruel master.

Ketha is a shifter with a wolf bondmate and a seer. After being captured by vampires she tries to convince them if the vampires and shifters work together they have a chance to survive the Cataclysm before everything is poisoned.

The Cataclysm has been poisoning and killing everything for over ten years. Resources are at rock bottom and the shifters believe there are only a few months left before then end.

Victor and Ketha have an attraction but it is forbidden. Ketha can tell Victor isn’t the same as the older vampires and still has his humanity. They work together to avoid Raphael’s wrath and gather all who are needed to work a spell to end the Cataclysm one way or another.

There’s shifters, vampires, angels, magic and prophecy.

Overall I enjoyed the story, it kept my interest even though the ending happened as expected. It was hard to imagine a spell in Siberia was affecting lands in South America and the entire world and while many things had magical explanations, it felt a little too easy to use magic to explain some things away but be vague on other items.

Entertaining and I loved the premise! It's been awhile since I've read a vampire book, and I really enjoyed Ann Gimpel's storytelling. Vampires and shifters are trapped in a city by a magical barrier. The whole backstory for why this happened is interesting, and I loved the magical elements. I also really enjoyed the dystopian feel. The time period is current, but the story felt more old-fashioned. I listened to the audio, and the narrator did a good job; some of the accents were a little weird, but overall, I enjoyed the listening experience. There's a bit of Romeo and Juliet thing going on between the main characters, which I liked. The connection between Viktor and Ketha is really sweet, and I liked both characters. The shifters were more like witches that could shift, and each has a different animal, but it's mainly Ketha using magical elements to figure out how to escape the barrier. Those trapped in the city are running out of food, and the water is tainted, so they need to get out of there before things get worse than they already are. There are those that don't want that to happen, and the vampires aren't exactly the most friendly. The idea of being trapped isn't a unique idea, but I think Gimpel's story is uniquely told. Looking forward to reading more by Ann Gimpel!

This is first book, in the authors Bitter Harvest Series. I had no clue as to what the story was about, well it turned out to be about a spell, that had gone wrong many years before, and it was slowly destroying the earth. The backstory for how this happened, and what occurred during those years, is fascinating. We have shifters, magic and vampires and humans as well; and as you read you'll learn the good, the bad, and everything in-between that is slowly poisoning nature in such a way that the earth is now on a course of total destruction. We learn that there may be one way to stop and revive the planet; but is it real or just a myth. If it's real can the different races put aside there distrust and hatred for each, and work together in time to save not only themselves, but the planet and every living thing on it. Will they agree to it, even if it means they might forever be changed, becoming something new, neither just vampire or shifter. This story is filled with surprising twist and turns, even impossible love and I can't wait to see what happens in book 2.

I was really impressed by the creativity of this book, the idea of a magical spell gone wrong and slowly causing the end of the world was well crafted and not something I've seen before.

I really liked Victor, he's definitely not a stereotypical vampire, he's still fairly human really and that creates a conflict with how he's expected to behave.

Ketha is an excellent lead female character, she's strong, confident, and capable. Plus the chemistry between her and Victor adds a much needed lighter element to the story, and they're just so cute together.

I loved the ending, it made the story feel complete and yet teased me into wanting to know what happens next.

The narration is well done, the character voices are distinct and consistent although the accents came across as a bit odd sometimes, the delivery did a good job of conveying tension and emotion.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Viktor is a a sea loving man, turned into a Vampire. He hates what he has become and is stuck in Ushuaia like everyone else. Ketha and some other Shifters traveled to Ushuaia for an eclipse and got trapped. They are just trying to stay one step ahead of the Vampires and keep some of the humans safe. Ketha and Viktor run into each other when she gets caught. She thinks she may have a way to save them all, but it's going to take them all working together. There is something about her that draws Viktor to Ketha. She feels it as well, but they both know that it's forbidden and could get them killed. The future hangs in the balance and maybe just maybe they can all get out alive.
These two are both strong survivors. Loved that they found a way to balance and support one another with out forcing the other to hide their strengths. Can't wait to read book 2!!

What a cool new world and an awsome story.
A spell gone wrong and a cataclysm has hit was world trapping the people, shifters and vampires in ushuaia. The vampires are at the top of the food chain and everything is dieing.
Shifter use magic to protect themselves and the humans
Viktor had once been a human and was now a vampire, he hates it. His maker was evil.
They catch a shifter named Ketha a wolf shifter and a seer. She has seen how to fix the world if she could just get the vampires on the same plan.
Love the action, mystery, twists and turns in this story. The characters are in depth and you really feel like you know them. It's an amazing unique story that I just couldn't stop reading! I can't wait for the next book to come don't miss this it's wonderful
Voluntarily reviewed a copy and I honestly loved it.

Very consuming tale of an upside down world. Ketha is a very strong and determined seer, her gift is powerful but her grim existence is draining. Their dire situation is described so well and is so detailed that I didn't have to wonder what they did to survive. It is so realistic that I was pondering if I would be able to do that to survive. :0 Viktor is different, I've never read tell of a vampire that didn't love being a vampire, lol but if your heart ain't in then you fake it. His situation is dangerous, his instant connection to a shifter is puzzling but these two form a bond and are destined. It was very interesting reading how they dealt with their predicament and their urgent desire to make things better before its too late.

Disclaimer.
I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.

What I liked about the book -
This book is not your typical shape-shifter / vampire story and has a very unique concept at its core. It caught my attention early on and kept me interested throughout. The characters are very well written and makes you pay attention to them. Their multi layered portrayal is what makes this a great listen, since you never know what action they are going to take next. This builds suspense and leads to a great climax.

What I disliked about the book -
Nothing specific that I could think of.

Narration -
Narration by Curt Bonnem is done well and matches the mood of the book.

This is an interesting storyline set in a dystopian world where vampires and shifters are trapped in a city by a magical barrier. The vampires rule here and humans hide for fear of their lives. Broken magic has changed this part of the world, all the water is poisoned and everything is dying. Ketha is a shifter and a seer who has seen how to fix the problem but needs the help of vampires. Viktor is dissatisfied with his life as a vampire and he teams up with Ketha and her sister shifters. There is a nice romance between Viktor and Ketha. An entertaining story full of action packed drama and danger, and some sweet romance mixed in.

Deceived is the first book in the Bitter Harvest series. The book can be read as a standalone. But it does end in a soft cliffhanger for the next book. There is violence. The sex is hot and steamy so definitely 18+.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here. The author did a great job of explaining what is going on in the world. This is not your typical vampire and shifter story. The storyline will keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next. It definitely kept me riveted. I look forward to reading the rest of this series. I received a copy of this book from the author and chose to leave a review for other readers.

Right when I think I want to stay away from any more new series I am tempted by someone I do like to read. Right away I know this is different with how it is getting laid out. Score in my opinion with now knowing I will be getting original and a treat. Wide range of paranormal with other elements blended in. You also start thinking what if while you are reading. Of course the relationship element is in there with Viktor and Ketha taking the helm. Astonishing moments will come along with the action throwing you also. Love is also a key ingredient to the story with it shaping our heart. By the time you have turned the last page you will be ready for more.

This is going to be an amazing new series from Ann Gimpel! This story is an 18+ paranormal romance that is full of action and excitement. The detail given to describing the world made it easy to picture it and the plot really kept me interested. I have loved everything Ann has written, so I knew I would enjoy this one, I just wasn't prepared for how MUCH I loved it. I don't want to give away any spoilers, and the blurb gives you enough info to understand the plot, so I'm just going to say that if you are a fan of urban fantasy or paranormal romance you need to read this book.

I have read one other book by Ann Gimpel and immediately wanted to follow this author. Some of hers knock me on my butt, others I can pass on. Not because of her writing, its always top notch. She writes different genres and some I am not interested in. As noted by the title, this is Book 1 in the Bitter Harvest series. It is new take on vampires, shifters and humans and a new world . There is mystery, magic, romance, suspense, its a story covering all the variables.

I volunteered to review this book and received a copy free of charge.

Looking forward to book2!

I have read a lot of Vampire and Shifter books in my life, but this one surprised me.

I love the storyline and plot. The Cataclysm and the plans to right the wrongs made by previous Vampires and Shifters are great. I love the idea that not all Vampires are bad to the core and that the magic used to rectify the cataclysm changed them to shifters. A good twist I think.

The sex in the book was sassy and sexy. Definitely 18+.

I can not wait to read book 2 in this series. It could turn out to be a blockbuster series.

Deceived...

The first book in the Bitter Harvest series. It was a decent read but I had a love hate relationship with this book. I felt like I was reading the same thing over and over again. It was Ketha POV then Viktor POV in the following chapter but exactly the same words. It drove me crazy. However, I loved the characters and the back stories. I loved the drama and action. Maddening sexual tension that finally got released. And a budding future with plenty of unknowns. A fairly new author for me but I will go onto the next book.

This book by Ann Gimpel was certainly a great start to her series about vampires, shifters, and humans trying to survive a near world-ending calamity. The story was entertaining, and even though most of it dealt with dark and grisly scenes, there were splashes of comedy in several instances to lighten the readers' mood and thoughts as they read the book. Of course there was also a strong romance that simmered in the background and then the foreground among many of the characters. This is a very very late voluntary review of a copy of this book from Instafreebie (now Prolific Works) Books.

Oh My!! Want a book that will be hard to put down, well this would be your choice.
Cataclysmic drama, witches, vampires and the world coming to a very nasty dead end, all being woven into an epic tale, of attraction and a fight for survival.
I know Ms Gimpel had an award winning book previously, and I am forecasting that this story will be winning a few accolades.

The only negative I have of this book is the ending I feel that some of it wasn’t really needed and sort of dragged on. Having said that I really enjoyed the overall because I was hooked from the very beginning and there was definitely lots of good action and the characters developed very well. I loved both the magic aspect and how the situation that our main characters find ourselves in being portrayed. Having both vampires and shifters were definitely a plus. Great book overall.

Ann Gimpel does it again! ~ This new series is sure to bring in the action, romance and magic that you're use to from Ms. Gimpel. I must admit that it seemed slow going in the beginning but when the story started to evolve, it hit the ground running. I was so engrossed as the story progressed... and then I reached the end, looking for more. I can't wait for 'Twisted' to come out!

Fun read

It was quite original story of shifters, vamps and the end of the world averted. It was slightly lacking in the romantic tension department since the love interests declared themselves almost immediately, but it was still a great adventure.
