Momma: Prequel to Diary of a Serial Killer Series

Rate this book
Let’s get THINGS straight:
You made up your mind about me and my son the day some prude, who got what she deserved, told you to.

Silly you. Cause I’m not Beverly. And I’m not my son either. I’m Momma.
And that’s just gonna have to be good enough for you.

Cause serial killers don’t grow on trees, you know.
You have to plant them.

I have been waiting with baited breath for this and I wasn’t disappointed. Make sure you read the Diary of a Serial Killer Series before you read Momma.

Momma Putnam is the mother of Jimmie Putnam the ice cream serial killer. I now understand why Jimmie turned out the way he did. There really wasn’t much chance for him with the parents he had.

Another awesome read from this authors. I’m so looking forward to reading more from her.

This is a book that you will love if you are into abnormal psychology.

Momma is a sociopath: she's narcissistic, selfish, self-absorbed and lacks empathy. She will never admit to doing anything wrong and find a way to justify any- and everything she's ever done. No wonder she raised a serial killer.

It also brings up another question - if you are willing to look deep enough - about serial killers:
Are they created by nature or nurture?
In this case the answer seems obvious and as the reader goes along, we may feel sympathy for the serial killer himself.

But, at times it feels like a he said-she said situation. Since momma is clearly the "bad guy" in this story, the reader may side with the son and disbelieve anything that momma has to say. However, he turned out to be a serial killer, so can we really believe everything he claims?

This story will not be for everyone, the subject matter is of deeply disturbing themes and it doesn't read like your typical story, but for those who "get it", you will love what the author did.

It's not really a best practice to judge a book by its cover, but when that cover looks as perfect to the premise of the story and as eye-catching as Momma's cover was, it suddenly becomes acceptable.
Momma was the prequel and backstory of Jimmie Putnam Jr. of The Diary of a Serial Killer fame. And this book certainly paints quite a clear picture of just how Jimmie grew into the killer he became. Erin Lee had done an incredible job in from the first chapter of showing things about Momma and Jimmie's early life and upbringing that connect perfectly with how we know he turned out. It was really masterfully done.
I loved that through the words and how this story was written, I could hear Momma's voice in my head as I was reading. This was such an in-depth look into Momma's life (and Jimmie's) that it was difficult not to feel a range of emotions, even for someone who had done terrible things. I gained a true understanding through this book for why things turned out the way that they had. Erin Lee's storytelling was brilliant in this book. Momma was a spunky and unforgettable character just trying to set the record straight, and that she did!

Momma Putnam, mother of serial killer, Jimmie Putnam, is one seriously messed-up character. She has all the worst traits of a narcissist and all of the lovability of a serpent.
This prequel to the Dairy of a Serial Killer Series answers the many questions that Jimmie Putnam “fans” may have had about how such a monster is created. In Momma’s words, “serial killers don’t grow like weeds, you know. You have to plant them.” And plant she did. From the moment he was born, her son and her father’s son, Jimmie was not quite what she expected. But she molded him into her likeness in so many ways.
Whether you read this as a stand-alone or read the entire series including Just Things, Jimmie’s Ice Cream, and Thing Fifteen, you’ll get a front seat peek into the mind of a serial killer and the momma who created him.
The author is a therapist who interviewed several serial killers before attempting this series. Her knowledge of how the warped mind works and her skill with words helps you understand what lurks in the psyches of serial killers.
I highly recommend it.

Erin Lee went all out on this one. If you ever wanted to know what a narcissistic mother is just read Momma. Momma and Jimmie have an intense battle of why they both are the way they are. Momma has a warped way of justifying her treatment of Jimmie. Everything from sexual abuse to animal abuse. If you feel like you really want to know about Jimmie and his Momma read and weep. This book will make you think!

They say the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.
Momma heard it her whole life, so did Jimmie. And that's the kicker because there is really so much truth to that statement. We often spend so much time trying not to turn into our parents, that we turn into exactly them, and that's what happened to Jimmie.
In Momma's case, she was proud to be like her daddy, proud to make Jimmie just like him. In "Momma" we learn her side of things. What she endured growing up and just how sick and twisted of an upbringing it was. We learn how she did what she thought was right for Jimmie and that too was a product of her upbringing, and through it all, she justifies almost each and every step of it.
Brilliantly written we learn the depths of Momma's sickness, we learn how she viewed Jimmie's childhood, and we gain insight into why Jimmie is the way he is. "Momma" is a perfect addition to the Diary of a Serial Killer Series because it gives us the insight we are lacking from Jimmie's point of view. Lee is not afraid to put the obscene out there and twist it into a must read for fans of the series.

Momma is a seriously messed up individual that made the search for at least one redeeming quality impossible!! If there was a book "What Not To Do When Parenting" she would definitely be the author!! She is rude, crude and justifies every screwed up thing she did to Jimmie while growing up, which makes this very interesting and captivating, and at times will make you question,"What the hell did I just read?" But I guarentee if you read the Diary of a Serial Killer series you definitely want to read this book to get "Momma's" perspective, because it's quite interesting, to say the least!! Enjoy!!

Whoa! Okay, we all knew from Jimmie's view that Momma meant business but dayumn, this lady don't take no shit! Momma will kick a$$ & take names all the way to the bank. I feel like I learned a lot from this book honestly. I'm not going to say how as I hate when people give away books details but wow, lots of interesting information is in this book. Plus, Momma was no slouch when it came to knowing things. Loved Momma's version, I can't wait to buy this whole set in paperback.

I listened to this beauty at work. This book was needed, Momma's side of the story. It has left me speechless, wow!

The questions going in: Did Momma create a serial killer? Was it really her fault or beyond her control?

After finishing, a new question: Wonder, what became of Momma's brother's life? Did the cycle continue with his family? Hmmmm.

Up Next: Cotton Candy: Read books out of order: see review -5 stars! This is a series, but each book can be read as a standalone.

This is AWESOME!!!

I loved this series!! And by putting this book out last, makes it even better! You get to meet Jimmy, then see him through a Thing's eyes, and now, Momma. Two peas from the same messed up pod, Momma tells her story and her side of the story. And let me tell you, if you loved Jimmy's messed up thinking, wait til you hear Momma's!!

I can't say how many times my mind was blown reading this. How Momma justifies what she did to Jimmie throughout childhood had me saying WTH more times than I could count. I don't want to give anything away but I will say that I do not envy Jimmie at all having her for a mother. Well written and gives you a great look at how warped this woman is. Momma is a character for sure!

Momma Putnam is one messed up person. It is no wonder Jimmie is as messed up as he is. From her abuse of him, to her using him to abuse the system so she didn't have to work, she is certainly a piece of work!

Momma
Well...this book will defiantly have you saying WTF!?? If you though Jimmie was crazy, you HAVE to meet Momma!
This book, #4 from The Diary of a Serial Killer series, gives you a better look into Jimmie' s past through his mom. It goes more into his childhood and how his mom feels about what he wrote in his journals.
As crazy as she is, I could not put Momma down! The things you did to and "for" Jimmie will have you shaking your head and maybe even your fist. Although I'm sure not all of it is her fault...
