What this world does have, however, is the strongest national security state in America's history, inspired by a horrific terrorist chip implants are mandatory, drones of all sizes roam the skies, and a Citizen Status Rating is used to arrest or detain individuals before they have committed any crime.
As Jamie seeks to save her new family and world from the Elementals, she must also battle a government which believes she represents a terrible danger to national security.
Please join Jamie on a 166,000-word epic adventure that, as one reviewer put it, "never quits."
I loved book 1 in this series and rushed to get book 2. It started off as pretty much more of the same as book one, except poor Jamie was about to have her groundhog day moment and have to defeat the alien threat all over again. This time on her own! It took me a while to get into this one, but as with all the Lawrence Ambrose books I've read, there's a tipping point when you discover you're hooked, and can't put the damn book down! That was around the 50% mark for me. After that I was pulling out my phone to read whenever I could squeeze in a few minutes. I love how these books are science-y but you don't have to think too hard to understand them, or accept the world building - similar to the reason I enjoyed The Martian. It was really interesting to meet characters from the first book who didn't have superpowers in this one and see how they evolved. The only thing missing was a scene where Tillie kicked her ex's ass herself. I would have liked to see that! I feel like I could read another whole book about these characters.
Jamie made a choice, the one to go to this other universe to be with her surviving family and save the world from being annihilated. The action is completely different in this one, here the heroine must contend with a really more advanced united state that turned into a tyranny. Humans are notorious in this parallel dimension.
There is even more drama! More awesome fights and more conspiracies.
