Jess Albion has recently started a new life on the other side of the world with a new identity. She used to be MI5. Then a job went bad, someone died and she was made an example of in the British courts. But MI5 look after their own. Or they did until rumours of a planned Al Qaeda biological terror attack on London started circulating. Now someone in the British security services is giving agents up in return for information. No price, it seems, is too high to save London from the ultimate threat.
When Jess’s fresh start is compromised she has a choice to make: run and hide and spend the rest of her life looking over her shoulder or go looking for the threat and snuff it out. On her own, she’d run, but she has Nick on her side.
The Fallen Agent is a story of love and hate, of loyalty and betrayal, of revenge and callous disregard for human life in the pursuit of satisfaction.
The Fallen Agent is inspired by an episode of the British TV series Spooks. I haven't seen the TV series, but you really don't need to have done that to appreciate this story. Since it's inspired by the TV series isn't it like you need to know a lot of stuff before you read the book. I liked that, it made it so much easier to read the book. The past events that happened before the story in this book are explained and the characters are easy to get to know.
I actually read this book during one day, or rather half a day thanks to a short memory and the realization that it was my turn to host the blog tour the day after. But, if there is something I like is it to be challenged so I decided to do what I do best, and that's to read!
The story starts off strong with a wtf moment. I swear to you I was like "huh?" and then I realized that the surprising start made sense. I love starts like that, the ones that right from the first page has you on the edge of the chair and then keeps going strong. This was not the only surprise moment, which btw is another thing that I loved about this book. One can't take this story for granted, this is not a story that playing it safe, instead, things happened that will really surprise you. One thing for sure, Oliver Tidy isn't afraid to twist the story in a way to will take you by surprise.
I love the whole spy business, with Jess Albion being dragged back into her old life when an old enemy decided to have here killed and also treated to cause a terror attack if she isn't killed. However, Jess may be an ex-spy, but that doesn't mean that she will have a hard time getting back into the game nor is she friendless. The question is, will she be able to both stay alive, capture the man that wants her dead and stop terrorists from attacking London?
The Fallen Agent is the first book in the Jess Albion series. It's a fast-paced story with the short chapters. Just the way I want my thrillers to be. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the sequel when it's published!
I received this book from Bits About Books for a blog tour!
Fast-paced, enigmatic, and very absorbing, THE FALLEN AGENT by Oliver Tidy is a spy novel with plenty of action and subterfuge to reel you in and keep you dangling on the hook!
After being hung out to dry by the British Government, Jess Albion has managed to start a new life on the other side of the world where nobody knows who she truly is. Hoping to stay in the shadows Jess has no interest in getting sucked into her old world of MI5 and bad guys. But when it becomes obvious that someone is hunting her and it is very personal, Jess is forced to go on the run again, and with the information being supplied from those that she used to trust, Jess will have no choice but to sniff out the terrorists for herself before it is too late.
Full of danger, secrets, betrayals, and desperation, THE FALLEN AGENT by Oliver Tidy will leave your heart racing and your hands trembling as you enter a world where people's lives are easily expendable for the purpose of revenge and power. Inspired by an episode of the popular tv show Spooks, this story really does play through your mind like a movie as the character's behaviours, emotions, and actions are very detailed and descriptive. I am a fan of secret agent/spy novels and movies, so THE FALLEN AGENT by Oliver Tidy was right up my street and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an energetic story of revenge, dominance, and conflict.
*I voluntarily reviewed this book from Bits About Books (blog tour organiser)
Ex-Spooks agent Jess Albion has been murdered in prison. Albanian mobster Amir Bashar should be thrilled – but somewhere on earth, Jess is still alive… for how much longer when the British Intelligence and the Albanian Mafia are out to get her?!
Introduction
A Jess Albion Thriller #1
Amir Bashar realises that his revenge has not been completed when he sees the image of the woman killed. She is not Jess Albion, the one who killed his son and who he will hunt until the end of time. What is more, Bashar has a mole within the British Intelligence, Henry Price, who is prepared to go to extreme lengths to satisfy Bashar’s needs. To Henry Price, it is an ordinary quid-pro-quo situation: he delivers Jess on a plate to Bashar in exchange for the information Bashar has on a biological terror attack on London, a danger Price would give anything to prevent. However, just how far Price will go in humouring Bashar we will have to see….
Storyline
Rufus Sitwell is now retired but once, he was Jess Albion’s section chief and the one who stood by her when the whole of the British Secret Service dropped her and let her be convicted to ten years imprisonment for murder. Rufus’ involvement in Jess’s safety becomes all too clear now the fake Jess has been murdered in her place. Price feels he has no choice but to give up Rufus’ name to Bashar, fully aware of how Bashar’s men extricate information from unwilling participants. Rufus realises Jess could be in extreme danger and so he contacts the only man who can protect her, a man who had feelings for her, Nick Dart. Sadly, Rufus and Nick will never meet again for Bashar’s men are on to him. It will come as no surprise that Price grabs the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone by claiming Nick Dart is the main suspect for Rufus’ demise. A man who knows how to stay under the radar but who also is aware of Jess’ predicament.
Nick embarks on a race against time to find Jess and to protect and shield her from the murderers Bashar no doubt will send after her. Blissfully ignorant, Jess has a secret of her own. With Nick flying across the world to locate Jess and warn her, Henry Price is in agony. Will he be able to deliver Jess’ body to Bashar and fulfil his promise? Price knows no other way to get inside information on the terrorist attack on London which, according to Bashar, is planned for the foreseeable future. Price cannot leave London and all its inhabitants defenceless against a biological attack and has to trust Bashar who very much has his own twisted agenda. To that end, he plays a dangerous game of life and death – and the consequences will be harrowing. A vicious and murderous plot is developing at a dizzying pace and we can only witness the horrors before us … Will Jess, will anyone, survive?
My Thoughts
As someone who never watched Spooks, the character of Jess Albion was unknown to me. But then again, I have read about the British Intelligence, about how they sometimes, rather than co-operating, work against each other often with devastating unforeseen results. Power and influence are the driving force behind many an action and in Oliver Tidy’s The Fallen Angel, again this heavily influences the main characters, apart from Jess, Nick and Rufus. Jess is someone who has endured quite a lot for her country, who has seen and experienced terrible situations and survived worse. Killing Bashar’s son brought her the prison sentence but her section chief, Rufus, took care of that. I totally loved Jess’s character, she is a strong, independent, and intelligent woman who can take care of her own. Nick is special too – his love for Jess shines through in everything he does.
This thriller is captivating and engrossing, it is superbly plotted and simply a great read! I highly recommend it!
The Fallen Agent is the first book in a new series featuring protagonist Jess Albion. Jess used to be MI5 but when she was made an example off in the British courts after a case went wrong and someone died, she was made to disappear to the other side of the world.
If that sounds familiar, it might be because the story was inspired by an episode of the most brilliant British tv series ever made, namely Spooks. Since I am a huge fan and regularly watch all ten seasons again, there was no way I’d pass up the opportunity to read this one.
Jess was on trial for the murder of the son of an Albanian mafia boss. When he realises Jess wasn’t punished at all, he feels the British justice system has failed him and his son and he’s on the hunt for justice. What follows is a fantastic display of the evil games people play, as you would expect from a delightful spy story.
Oliver Tidy delivers a compelling and tense plot, full of intrigue, revenge and betrayal. And not just from the bad guys. MI5 may say they look after their own but that’s not always the case. The tension builds up nicely as the clock ticks away the minutes to stop a terrorist attack that will have devastating consequences for the entire world population.
The thrill of the chase, combined with illicit meetings and lots of action, had me hooked. Just like the show, the author has no problems whatsoever putting important characters in danger, which I can always appreciate. I thought this was a truly excellent way to kick-off a new series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’ll be interesting to see how the characters develop in the next instalment. I look forward to it very much.
They say there’s honour among thieves but there doesn’t seem to be much in the world of the secret service. Someone high up in Vauxhall Cross is sacrificing agents to save his own job. Add in Al Qaeda, a rich Albanian, unfeasible amounts of money and the threat of a terrorist attack on London and you have the ingredients for an exciting thriller.
The characters are well-drawn, with good points and flaws to make them three-dimensional and believable. There are several high-octane points in the story which keep it bouncing along, making you wonder what can possibly happen next. The author vividly portrays the setting of the book – much of it in Albania. Altogether, this is a top notch spy thriller which I have no hesitation in recommending.
4.5* Jess Albion, ex MI5, was convicted of murder and sentenced to ten years imprisonment when an assignment went wrong. The father of the murdered man, Amir Bashar, an Albanian mafia boss, wanted revenge. He sent two assassins to the cell of the imprisoned woman. Only it was the wrong woman. The real Jess Albion had been spirited away to the other side of the world, under a new identity. Amir Bashar is angry, feeling the British justice system has let him and his son down, and is threatening a terror attack on London unless he’s told where Jess is. Jess’ colleagues take the decision to give her up as collateral damage.
Jess is just getting used to her new life in New Zealand when her past catches up with her in the form of Nick Dart. If Nick can find her, so can others who she’d be a lot less happy to see. And so begins a thrilling race against time and some extremely evil men.
Having never watched Spooks, an episode of which inspired the story, I went into the book with no preconceived ideas. Although the threat of, and actual, terror attacks on London are not unknown, the threat from Bashar would potentially affect the worldwide population. The plot is fast paced, with short, concise chapters moving the story forward, with lots of tension and suspense. Jess has been abandoned by certain of her colleagues and, apart from Nick, she can’t trust anyone. Even so, running for the rest of her life holds no appeal so between them, she and Nick decide to face, and hopefully defeat, those who threaten them whether they are enemies or so called friends.
A cast of well drawn, believable characters, good and bad, with a mixed, sometimes surprising reaction to one in particular when I did feel a some slight sympathy at times. Jess is tough, competent and spirited, a good match for her enemies. The Fallen Agent explores the darker side, not only of the secret services but also human nature. Bartering lives for information, racial discrimination, the desire for revenge and a cold disregard for the consequences.
Oliver Tidy has constructed an excellent, well thought through plot, and the opening hook had me intrigued from the start. The story line is exciting and suspenseful with unexpected twists and a shocking ending. Great start to a new series.
I chose to read and review The Fallen Agent based on a copy of the book supplied by Bits About Books and the author/publisher.
My earliest memories of reading books I considered to be “spy” thrillers came from my teen years when I was devouring as many books as I could get my paws on at the time. Most of the espionage thrillers were Cold War tales set in Berlin or Russia where there were it seemed everyone was frantically trying to outmanoeuvre the next person – I got a bit scunnered with those quite quickly and returned to crime and horror tales. Had those “spy” books been as exciting and fast paced as Oliver Tidy’s The Fallen Agent then I would have read many more.
The Fallen Agent is described as a Jess Albion thriller as I had not read any of Oliver’s books prior to this one it was nice to have that wee steer as to which character I should be looking out for. Chapter One and I am picking my jaw from the floor and wondering what the Hell is going to happen next as all my preconceptions of what may happen in The Fallen Agent had been shattered.
Well there will not be any spoilers over what did happen next but I can assure you that this was a great read. I tore through it in one single sitting and loved every twist and turn along the way.
British Security chiefs are worried about a potential terror attack on London and are willing to do whatever they can to protect the city. When a potential information source makes an offer to trade his knowledge of the upcoming attack for details of where he can find Jess it seems there is an easy choice to make. There will be no loyalty shown and Jess will be sacrificed to protect millions of others – her location will be revealed to the man who wants her dead.
But Jess still has at least one friend in the Service (Nick) and he embarks on a race against time to find Jessica and alert her to the potential threat against her life. With so much at stake, the action in The Fallen Agent comes thick and fast. Oliver Tidy has a fabulous writing style which keeps the story zipping along and kept me hooked throughout.
An absolute treat: The Fallen Agent comes highly recommended.
The book is based on the Spooks TV program, but I have never seen it so I couldn’t tell you how closely the book follows it.
The story starts really well and held my attention throughout. It follows Jess Albion, a disgraced former MI5 agent, as she is chased throughout the world by an Albanian Mafia boss after she killed his son.
The storyline is really good as it follows all the main characters throughout the book and you get to see what they are thinking when they find out bits of the story themselves.
I really liked the main characters of Jess and Amir, even though I probably shouldn’t as he is the bad guy, and I was rooting for Jess throughout the book. Jess’ character and back story were really well written and I liked the way she reacted to everything that was going on around her.
The story line was really intriguing and kept me hooked throughout the book as people were put in danger and I was left wondering if and how the would escape from each situation. Oliver is definitely not scared to kill off people, which made the story much more interesting, as there was no guarantee that the main characters would even survive to the end of the book.
The conclusion of the book was brilliant and unexpected and I can’t wait to read more from Oliver in the future.

A deadly terrorist attack is planned on London. Can it be stopped, and, if so, what personal sacrifices will be needed?
In order to gain information needed to prevent the attack, MI5 are prepared to give up one of their own - Jess Albion. But what if Jess doesn't want to be handed over? Jess and her ex-colleague and friend Nick use their training in evasion and undercover operations to escape capture, a journey that takes the reader to London, New Zealand and Albania.
This is a great action thriller, with plenty of interesting information about Al Quaeda the Palestinian / Israeli conflict and, of course, MI5. It is fast paced, with plenty of twists and surprises.
A 5* all the way through, until the ending which I found somewhat disappointing, and pushed my rating down to a 4*. Still a great read though!
Well where to start with this book. First off I absolutely loved it. It is a book that I am finding very hard to review without giving away any spoilers.
It starts with a murder, but of the wrong person. From there the reader is transported to New Zealand, this is the new home of the intended victim. Jess Albion has been given a new identity and a new life. It is not one she had ever envisioned for herself, but her past still visits her in her dreams and nightmares. These dreams soon start to become reality, all she had left behind of her own life comes rocking up and smashing her door down.
With the help of Nathan, her colleague in MI5, they intend to try and discover the truth behind not only the way she had been disgustingly mistreated at MI5, but also how a rumour of a possible biological terrorist on London. This begins a dangerous game of cat and mouse, lies and double crossing for the search for verifiable information on this possible threat.
As I said from the outset, I do not want to give anything away. It is a deep and well constructed thriller that has action and intrigue from the get go. It has that “edge of your seat” feel to it, with a pace that suits and is maintained throughout, a real page turner to see what will happen next. The characters in this book are a definite mixed bunch, some I really, really liked, then there are some real “slime balls” that I despised, others that I just down and out loathed, and then the odd surprise where I changed my mind about them. Is it wrong to like a baddy just a little bit ? The plot of the story is quite big for the size of the book, there are a good amount of twists, that keep you guessing and at no point did I feel confused while reading.
If you like espionage, crime, thriller, backstabbing action packed, creative and well written book then you will not go wrong with this. It ticked so many boxes for me, and it is my hope that other readers will feel the same way.
Yet another brilliant book by Oliver Tidy, a real gripping page turner. Well written as you would expect good plot and hopefully a follow on. I will not reveal anymore about the plot other than you can read in the preamble. But I would heartily recommend that you buy this book and read it. I must admit I have stayed up late into the night I wax so enthralled.
I’ve read a number of Tidy’s books. I’ve enjoyed them all including “The Fallen Agent.” Jess Albion and other characters are very interesting and different. Give this book a read.
I liked this book, the story line was great. It was easy to read and kept my attention from start to finish. Hopefully there will be other books concerning Jess.
So pleased to have found an Oliver Tidy novel I hadn't read. I thoroughly enjoyed all of his previous series (especially Booker and Cash which is set where I live) even Acer Samson which is not really 'my kind of book'. Didn't think Jess Albion would be 'my kind of book' either, but it certainly was. Like all of Tidy's books it grabs you by the throat from the word go. An interesting plot (and extremely relevant at the current time) and good characters, all seasoned with the usual Tidy wry humour. There were some loose ends which leads the reader to think (hope!)this might become another series.
Opening with an attempted murder and following the unravelling of a potential terrorist threat against London, from start to finish this book is full of high stakes tension and action.
Spurned by the very Government she once served loyally, Jess Albion has been offered as the sacrificial lamb, not once but twice. In exile in New Zealand, she had been hoping to make a fresh start, to put behind the betrayal and the horrific events which led her there, but someone has other ideas. With her life once more in danger, Jess joins forces with a former partner, in work and love, Nick. As they travel back to Europe in a bid to make a deal which may just save her life and prevent a terrorist attack on the Capital, Jess is thrown into a highly dangerous and highly political situation in which not everyone will leave with their lives intact.
This book was a really fast paced read, the chapters short and each one driving the action forward and making me want to read onward. Jess Albion is a really intriguing character. Burned by the British Government, and faced with a heart breaking tragedy, she still manages to maintain a hard edge, showing herself to be a gutsy and intelligent character. Her recent past is almost impossible to reconcile and yet she finds some kind of inner strength, resolves to keep fighting and to find justice for her fallen compatriots.
There is a wonderful edge to her character which is complemented by the equally courageous and intrepid Nick Dart. He has a wonderful history with Jess and a clear desire to protect her, but while he is your true action hero, it is clear from the off that Jess can more than hold her own. In contrast you have the contemptible Henry Price. Although he makes decisions in the interest of National Security, you can’t help but feel there is a more personal agenda, that not all of his choices are entirely ethical or fair. It makes him very, very hard to like.
The story is perhaps recognisable, based around an episode of the TV series Spooks. Even if you are not a fan of the series, and I have to admit I have probably only seen maybe one or two episodes myself, sadly, the idea of a terrorist attack upon London is hardly uncommon these days. That this is destined to be chemical attack, that the effects of if cannot possibly be contained thereby having potential global consequences just adds another layer of jeopardy to an already tense storyline. It certainly had those nerve jangling, heart stopping moments, and there is more than one occasion when you wonder just what kind of danger Jess has placed herself in and if there can ever be a happy conclusion to her story. Happy? Well, perhaps not, but certainly satisfying.
This was certainly a really intriguing start to the series and, as a fan of action and espionage style thrillers, I am looking forward to seeing where Mr Tidy takes Jess Albion next.
