In the distant future, one ship's appearance will set the galaxy on a course for war.
Note: Though the Intrepid Saga omnibus also contained Destiny Lost, this collection contains Set the Galaxy on Fire to offset this duplication
An ancient general and a freighter captain must join forces and defeat all challengers if they are to reach the Intrepid in time to save it from the enemies gathering at Bollam's World.
Destiny Lost
Sera leads a simple life.
A little smuggling, some drinking contests, and captaining her star freighter, Sabrina. But when she picks up a mysterious shipping container on Coburn Station, things begin to go wrong. She finds herself at odds with The Mark, a dangerous pirate organization that wants the cargo on her ship.
Inside the container she not only finds a woman, but a secret thought lost millennia ago. The woman is Tanis Richards, and she knows the location of the Intrepid, a missing colony ship from humanity’s golden age.
Sera knows how to help Tanis and the Intrepid. But to do that, she will need to reveal a secret that will pull her back into a life she left long ago. A life from which she was exiled in shame and disgrace.
Tanis doesn't trust Sera; and Sabrina’s rag-tag crew is nothing like what she's used to, but she's going to have to rely on them to avoid capture and get back to the Intrepid. As Tanis and Sera battle pirates and interstellar governments, the two women forge a friendship that will forever shape the destiny of humanity.
New Canaan
Tanis Richards has spent half her life on the Intrepid, guiding the great colony ship, and its two million passengers, across hundreds of light-years. She has risked life, limb and those dearest to her to get this far.
Now she’s within reach of her goal; the New Canaan System, and a normal, stable life. The kind she's only dreamed about. The only remaining hurdle is to strike a deal with the Transcend Interstellar Alliance and trade the Intrepid’s advanced technology for the star system.
If only things were so easy.
The Intrepid’s arrival has upset the delicate balance of power between the Transcend, the Orion Guard, and the Inner Stars. Everything Tanis has ever hoped for is at risk as she fights to build the colony of New Canaan amidst the looming specter of war.
Orion Rising
After centuries of struggle, the ISF Intrepid has finally brought its colonists to New Canaan, a star system better than any they imagined. They made landfall and began to build their new home, far from the troubles of Sol and the Inner Stars.
Yet no one in the Orion Arm has forgotten that the colonists possess the most valuable technology known to humankind, least of all Tanis Richards—as she secretly prepares to defend New Canaan against any and all aggressors.
Now things have come to a head. A Transcend fleet has invaded New Canaan, and a Hegemony of Worlds fleet on its way. Tanis Richards must defeat a rogue AI that has its own designs for humanity’s future, while saving her people from invaders.
General, governor, commander of twenty thousand warships, Tanis Richards stands on the edge of a precipice. If she jumps, she will draw all of humanity into total war.
Malorie Cooper likes to think of herself as a dreamer and a wanderer, yet her feet are firmly grounded in reality.
A ‘maker’ from an early age, Malorie loves to craft things, from furniture, to cosplay costumes, to a well-spun tale, she can’t help but to create new things every day.
A rare extrovert writer, she loves to hang out with readers and people in general. If you meet her at a convention, she just might be rocking a catsuit, cosplaying one of her own characters, or maybe her latest favorite from Overwatch!
She shares her home with a brilliant young girl, her wonderful wife (who also writes), a cat that chirps at birds, a never-ending list of things she would like to build, and ideas…
Have you ever read a book that you wanted to put down, but kept going anyway? For me, this was one of those.
M. D. Cooper is female, so most of the major characters are female -- especially her two "leaders". Cooper is also homosexual, so many (not all) of her female characters are also. And several of her characters run around almost (occasionally completely) naked. One of the lead characters has a "skin suit" that shows everything, but can be altered for color and concealment (her father had to ask her to hide her nipples while talking to him). And they all seem rather promiscuous.
There's also a lot of nano-tech and artificial intelligence running around loose -- much of it inside the humans which makes the whole story VERY "sciencie" and somewhat surreal. But it's told well enough that I had no trouble going along with the concepts.
There seems to be a previous story leading into this (probably another set of books), but I had little trouble with that problem. Also, this is a cliff-hanger leading into another series.
Okay, so whey did I keep reading? Because this story is full of action and conflict and I'm an action junkie. The action sequences are well-told and believable. Even images from things far away take the appropriate amount of time to be seen due to the limited speed of light (which can be violated for travel and in limited occasions for communications -- using quantum entanglement). The story has grand sweeps -- especially in massive space battles.
Will I read it again? No. But it was worth one run through. Many others seem to think differently and you may enjoy it as much as they did. We all like different things. That's why there's so much to choose from.
Having got Marika’s Marauders to read I was well into it when I realised that I needed to read the Orion War books again. The problem was that I had read them some while back and couldn’t remember the finer details. For anyone who hasn’t read this saga I should say that you really need to read The Intrepid Saga first, then The Orion War to Attack On Thebes and pick up Marika’s Marauders! There are so many interlocking stories in the Aeon 14 universe that it will keep you occupied for weeks! Happily so I might add. Tanis/Angela, Joe, Bob et al are a fascinating group to follow. If you like hard SF this is perfect for you.
Unfortunately for me, I'm reading this saga a bit out if order. Fortunately for me, and you, it doesn't really matter. A sign of a good writer who is building a universe of their own, is the ability to have a reader join the ride at any point and not feel like they've missed anything. M.D. Cooper does this by making references to parts of the story you've missed and giving just enough info to fill obvious gaps in your knowledge of events, without making it repetitive for other readers who have read the lot. Well done, M.D. 5 stars from me. I love the characters and really feel the appropriate emotions and care about what happens.
This three book (Destiny Lost, New Canaan, Orion Rising) omnibus was entertaining space opera. Note that there is a relevant six book (or so) sub-plot series [Perseus Gate S1] that takes place chronologically between the second and third books.
[Note, if you want to plow through the entire Aeon 14 series, you really want to get M.D. Cooper's book "The Aeon 14 Reading Guide: Series Reading Order and Information about the Aeon 14 Universe (Aeon 14 Reference Materials Book 1)", currently free on Amazon Kindle
Characters who remain interesting and compelling even after 5,000 years, plots that twist an wriggle but never tangle, event the hint of real questions in political and psychological philosophy - what's not to like? I've read 7 1/2 books in this series and I'm as hooked as I was at the beginning. I ;look forward to the journey and hope that I get to see those hints of philosophy develop into a dialogue with the readers.
This is a great series so far with so much space naval action. It is full of very charismatic characters, many that I would like to spend time with if only they were real. The future described in the series captures my imagination, taking me back to discovering classic science fiction as a teenager thanks to my school librarian. I have the next 3 books ready to go on my Kindle.
Okay so let me start by saying I loved these books. It's a really interesting world and that's great. The problem is it's really big and there's so many different threads connecting to other books and all kinds of different call backs it's really hard to tell what I should read and when and what I should have already read before moving between the different books in the series.
I've read several of M D Cooper's books, and they've all been great and easy to read. The action is right up there, good character development and the story line doesn't get watered down with to many back stories. I would recommend reading Outsystem first, not required but that's where I started, it's a good starting point. So enjoy.
There are some interesting storylines and themes presented here, with a wild combination of science and technology but throughout all I read I never lost the sense that I had somehow started in the middle of the story. Eventually that sense of disconnection was enough for me to lose interest in this series.
Along with several strong human characters, these stories have strong AI characters. There are some epic battles against staggering odds, and at times the characters spend a lot of imagination trying to simply survive. I enjoyed these stories and look forward to reading more by the author.
This series looks be a great series and lead in to more great reading, as well as a large collection of off-shoot stories. Looking forward to more great stories.
Once again, I couldn't put it down. The action was amazing and the stories compelling. Tanis is another great character. Thank You M S Cooper. I look forward to reading more!
Absolutely amazing world/universe spanning adventures. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. If you love space opera sci-fi,you will love these books. I am hooked and I can't wait for more.😀
That book was awesome one of my favorites from this author so far can't wait to crack open the next one tying in Rika with everyone else the interweaving of plot lines and the ending yeah that book was stellar
Second time reading this series, and I'm even more impressed. More of the science is understandable this time and as such, even more impressive! Cooper is a genius story teller!!
I liked this books tremendously. The entire characters and battles can be actually seen in the minds eye when you read the book. Brilliantly written. A must read
Lots of excitement as we follow Tanis and her crews. Could not put it down. However, the sheer number of different books and different series makes deciding what to read very difficult!
