Honour, duty and keeping a stiff upper lip are seen as the essential characteristics of an English gentleman, but they come with Consequences, something Lord Jack Turner learns the hard way. He makes decisions that, at the time, he believes are right but impact the lives of the people he loves the most in ways he could not have predicted. These Consequences create a heady mix of unrequited love, lies, deceit, dishonour and hidden affairs. The friends he loves and thinks he is protecting have hidden agendas that eventually have a deadly impact on them all.
Coming from a working class background, Jack Turner steps into the world of British high society, a world of high stakes and unspoken expectations, when he wins a scholarship to a private prep school and befriends Rupert Winstanley, son of the wealthy Sir Jonathan and Lady Margaret. Jack is afforded opportunities he could only have dreamed of to become Lord Turner, friend to prime ministers and members of the royal family alike.
Boyd weaves a compelling story that highlights the effects wealth, privilege, power and position have on those born into less fortunate circumstances and reminds us that the choices we make, no matter how honourable, all come with Consequences.
If you loved reading the Clifton chronicles series of Jeffrey Archer , you would love this book too as it tells the rags to riches story of a local boy.His angst and the tribulations vying for an education and the love of a woman of higher class and his final betrayal when the love of his life marries his best friend instead.
Read the book to know why ?
I finished it in 2 days on my kindle, the story of Jack Turner bound me so . The writing style is lucid but rather stretched, the book could have been slicker in pace .I also feel that a little bit more sex would have made the passion more realistic.
I was given a complimentary online copy of this book by author Sam Boyd and through my membership With “ Voracious Readers Only”. I just finished the book tonight Narch 22, 2019 after starting it yesterday . I thoroughly enjoyed this book and delighted in the fact that it had a British flair and flavour and an added bonus of having British horse racing in it . Having been an avid rider in my earlier years it was nice to read. My heritage is 1/2 Scottish so I enjoy British books. The characters were believable and likeable and I could easily picture them in my minds eye like watching a movie rather than reading a book ! I learned some British history and government information as well . I would definitely recommend this book !
This is a well written book. The author has chosen to use the first person when telling the story, so we see the events through Jack Turner’s eyes. The story begins following a funeral and Jack’s grief and self blame. We are taken through his life and how it connects to Rupert’s and Anne’s. As the reader discovers the friendship between Jack and Rupert it’s hard to believe that anything could come between them, that is until Anne. But Jack is a true gentleman and proves this, repeatedly. In the end I found I was surprised by the events leading up to the funeral, and the final death on that day. A good read.
Looking back on our lives always shows us that all of our decisions, be they large or small, have consequences that may be large or small and may show up immediately or experience a slow burn.
Well written from the perspective of a key participant, we follow along the life long journey of a group of friends we can relate to love, loss, and the journey from youth to maturity.
A well written and realistic story of how life decisions have consequences.
I received a free copy of the book from the author through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for my honest review.
Though a pretty short read, this book does a great job in describing the life of its main character, Jack. The narrative at times however, seemed to be pretty flat in several parts of this book. It felt like details were left out that needed to be there, but there were details there that didn't need to be in order for the reader to enjoy the book. I have no urge to spoil the ending but I will say that I feel like the title of this book does the entire work justice and that there is something to be learned from reading this book.
This book took me by surprise. The cover didn’t clue me in to what it was about and then when it started talking about Lords and Ladies I was sure I must have ended up in a Victorian novel. However what I found instead was a current day love story that is complicated and complex in a way that life and love can frequently be. Quick enjoyable read. Full Disclosure- I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“I received a complimentary copy for review.” I enjoyed this book a great deal. It was the type of book you want to keep reading to find out what happens to the characters next. Jack was a very likeable character but a bit easily led. With Rupert it was a case of money. This book shows how future plans will be influenced by friendship and family. Would recommend this book to others.

I had a hard time putting this book down. It was well written and an intriguing tale of denied love, betrayal and the human condition. It was an enjoyable read. I received a complimentary copy for review from author via Voracious Readers Only.
Honestly, I couldn't get past more than a few chapters in the ebook format. My advice to the author: Hire an editor. The punctuation is poor, cliches abound, and adjectives are used to excess. The opening line is promising, but the book doesn't deliver. I really wanted to like this. I can't even tell you what it's about. voraciousreaders.com, I hope this was just a problem with the ebook.
The opening book in Sam Boyd’s Jack Turner series introduces Lord Turner as he returns from the funeral of his two closest friends. Coming from humble beginnings, he received a scholarship to a prestigious school where he first met Rupert Winstanley. Throughout their school years they were inseparable. Rupert comes from a wealthy family and introduced Jack to a society of power and wealth. It is there that he met Anne, who would become the love of his life.
After school their paths diverged, with Jack attending Oxford and Rupert heading to Cambridge. While the friendship endured it was never the same. After a major betrayal by Rupert, Jack accepts the situation rather than speaking up and making his feelings known. Actions have consequences and if he had not been so accepting life may have been much different.
This is a tale of unrequited love, lies and betrayal. From the moment I picked this up I was hooked on Jack’s story. From his youthful school days to his rise in business and politics, each choice that he makes has consequences that lead to a tragic ending.
I would like to thank Voracious Reader and the author for providing this book for my review.
I received a review copy of this book from the author through Voracious Readers. This is a well written and intelligent story about life and how choices made early on, innocent or not, can affect the future in ways that cannot be predicted. The author has created well rounded and realistic characters that leap off the page and ensnare you in the story. The story itself is detailed and imaginative and is full of twists and turns that keeps the reader hooked. This story is not a light, happy read - it is a serious tale of friendship, unrequited love, betrayal, despair and regrets. This story was a little too intense for my taste, but I did find it to be an intriguing and interesting read.
