KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.
Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.
This was really good, the story is well written and I really liked the nods to Phasma’s past that was unveiled in the Phasma novel. Marco Checchetto has also done a wonderful job with the art, his style works well with the Star Wars universe.
"I liked it / Really liked it." - 3.5 star rating, with a round up to a 4.
At the time of this review, I have read all the entire 4-comic book series of this Captain Phasma entry. This review reflects the collection as a whole, as opposed to each individual comic.
These start off slow/rough, with 2.5-star rating feels, with Phasma in pursuit of a traitor. After some zips and zoops in space, we find ourselves on a pretty great sci-fi rich planet full of sea monsters and an indigenous population under strife.
Phasma does some Green Beret style operations, peeling off her armor and dressing down in more casual attire (still concealing her face however), where she wins over the locals and uses them to fight and pursue her own agenda(s).
We get some flashbacks in this series, taking a peek at young Phasma and her sister. Really love this type of content, as it deepens the connection to the character and makes you appreciate them so much more.
By the end of this series, Phasma is coming at the reader pretty much like Batman, with her cape, array of weaponry, suit of armor, and pummeling all those who stand against her.
Issues 3 and 4 are very strong and provide a super fun and satisfying ending to these Sequel-Phasma comics that are excellent, pushing this series across the finish line at the 4-star mark for me.
I still enjoy the artwork in this second issue, but I had less fun in the last part of the story with the change of scenery. I loved the tiny reference to Phasma's terrible home planet though (I am currently reading the novel at the same time, so I pictured everything with just one speech bubble.)
I enjoy learning more about her. The writers of both the novel and this (and the upcoming movie too, I hope) are doing a good job of fleshing out the character.
I really like the worldbuilding in this issue. And though Phasma removes her stormtrooper helmet, she wears another helmet so that we don't see the face. I like that, in that sense, the mystique of the character is being preserved.
