Homeros’un meşhur “şarap rengi deniz” benzetmesi, tat almanın, koklamanın ve hissetmenin aynı zamanda renkler olduğunu söyler. Denizin rengi, keskin kekre tadı ve kokusuyla ilgilidir. Denizde olmak, fazla içmenin getirdiği sersemlik hissini ima eder.

Antik dünyada özellikle sıradan insanların yaşantısı ile ilgili başlangıç seviyesinde malumat için müthiş bir kitap. Çocuğunu kaybeden kadınların, özgürleştirilmiş kölelerin, protokol hakkını kaybetmiş asilzadelerin sesini, cenazesini kaldıracak yakını olmadığı için sokaklarda günlerce kalan evsizlerin ölülerinin kokularını, - kendini Tanrı'ya adayan, aylarca veya yıllarca yıkanmayan keşişlerin de kokularını aynı zamanda - duyabileceğiniz, akıcı / eğlenceli bir anlatıma sahip.

Now, I'm no historian, but I am a linguist who specialises in ripping apart ideological language; I know when somebody's selling something and I've got a few things to say about it.
Edit: the more I read about the ancient world, the more my disappointment with this book grows. It focuses exclusively on Rome and Pompeii and completely glazes over the Hellenistic world. The complete absence of Egypt is a bemusing choice, but definitely consistent with the disinterest towards women in ancient societies. This is one hell of a skewed introduction into anglophone cultures' obsession with the Roman Empire more than anything else. The more I learn about ancient Rome, the funnier the bold comparison to the Chinese Empire and bored disregard of the Hellenistic world becomes. Rome was basically an insecure overcompensating wreck that managed, by virtue of sheer dumb force, to dominate the historical narrative. Long story short: sources should be critically examined; you don't just take a propaganda statement at face value to AvOiD ForCInG oUr MoDErN StanDardS and EThICs OnTo tHe PaSt, especially if all you have remaining is propagandistic material.
Let's start simple: this is one of those books that was done a great disservice by its raving blurb. The book itself is an interesting introductory lecture on the enduring relevance of the Roman Empire to the modern world from someone who really knows his stuff. And he can definitely write; it shone through in the Spanish translation I read. Regardless, the blurb and title promise the Ancient World. Instead, Ancient Greece is more of a side mention, Persia and Ancient China are vague spectres and 'the modern world' is limited to the UK and USA. The relevance to the modern world is only vaguely referred to and usually glazed over; the most we get is a short chapter on neo-classical architecture.
Now let's get deeply salty: the author takes some fictionalisation liberties with a fair portion of the material, but seems entirely unwilling to include more than a sentence about the position of women in ancient societies that questions the hegemonic narrative. 'We just don't know!' is repeated a few times, but a moving gravestone inscription from a mother to her daughter is held as mysterious while penis and sex graffiti are used as a basis for arguments regarding the culture of men. Seems like a legit and even-handed application of qualitative analysis, right? Hint: nah.
This was an especially questionable choice considering how many times the book otherwise cautions us against uncritically accepting historical narratives as fact or against applying our current conceptions of morality to the past.
I find that somewhat amusing (aside from dispiriting)... While feminism as a label and some of its beliefs are rather modern, the same can be said of modern sexist thought and conceptions. A number of modern controversies are projected onto the past (such as 'did women find street harassment funny or frightening? We just don't know!' followed by a small account of the burial of a woman who died after being raped during which onlookers chanted 'she deserved it!'). IDK Jerry, hard to extrapolate what the stakes were for women and slaves... But let's go postulate about and fictionalise the character of Diocletian.
Considering that we've been accumulating considerable amounts of historic/archaeological/etc work that challenges the narrative our modern assumptions re: gender and labour have imposed on the past, ranging from prehistoric female hunters, workers, to viking women warriors (not to mention the presence of shadowy female political figures, e.g. Nero's mother Agrippina), that's a deeply questionable take.
Societies of the past were without a doubt deeply violent against minorities or vulnerable groups. The hegemonic historic narrative does not recognise their existences or contributions to civilisation but considering how widespread informed speculation is in the field, a choice to declare the topic of women's position in antiquity as impossible to envision is a farcical exaggeration... And a wilful choice to keep subscribing to a deeply flawed view of the roots of humanity.
My current reading selection has been a jarring reminder of how popular non-fiction is basically a platform for the expression of questionable beliefs that would otherwise be on unsteady footing in an academic peer-reviewed context.

Loved this book! It does a wonderful job of introducing the ancient world as well as ideas on how to view and study the ‘real’ ancient world. Introducing different methods of study and things to watch out for.

Yıllardır tarih kitapları ve dergileri okurum epeyce şey bildiğimi düşünürdüm, meğer çok yanılıyormuşum. Yazar neyin ne olduğunu bir çırpıda değerlendirip kısa da olsa antik dünyanın ruhunu gösteriyor.
Özetle, "Antik Dünya" güzel bir yol gösterici ve ufuk açıcı bir eser.

i enjoyed the insight into the lifestyles of the people in ancient civilisations and the impact that classical literature and our interpretations of ancient societies has had on our modern society. felt like a collection of short think pieces or articles and would have loved for some chapters to be longer and to elaborate further

Es una lectura placentera, pero me queda claro que esta obra va a ser disfrutada y aprovechada mucho más por alguien que ya se halle familiarizado en cierta medida con la historia de Grecia y el Imperio Romano. La redacción de Toner es sencilla y transparente, lo que hace la lectura del libro muy ágil; si uno no se da cuenta puede acabárselo en una sentada. Brinda datos muy interesantes sobre la vida del hombre y la mujer comunes en las sociedades antiguas y una reflexión muy potente a cerca del modo en que la cultura clásica sigue influenciando la manera en que comprendemos el mundo. No obstante, siento que el libro carece de un hilo conductor que engarce lo que este desarrolla en cada capítulo; se siente más como una colección libre y algo desarticulada de reflexiones sobre la Antigüedad hecha por un erudito sobre el tema, que una obra con un objetivo puntual y claro.

This was an interesting taster in to the classical world and whetted my appetite to educate myself more on it and the impact the classical world and the ideas spawned from it have on our lives today. The book was also written clearly and well in a way that brought history to life and avoided the academic gobbledegook that too many history books descend in to.
It wasn't flawless as I felt due to the shortness of the book it flitted from subject to subject in a way that felt jerky and sometimes felt incomplete. The section on Islam rightly talked about the Christian world's enmity and demonisation of Islam, but ignored that this feeling was reflected equally by the Islamic world's view of Christianity. Whilst the conclusion was well done, it felt rushed and I feel a short chapter for a conclusion would have been better done.
This was a well written summary of the classical world and the key topics that defined it and still impact the world today. Its not flawless, but I would recommend it both for those looking for a good short summary of the classical world, but also as a starter book for people like me to dip their toes in to the waters of the classical world.

Genellikle yukarıdan aşağıya okuduğumuz tarihe, aşağıdan bakarak yaklaşılmış dolayısıyla alışılmışın dışında ama zevkli bir anlatı olmuş.
Domingo Yayınevinin Aklayakın serisinin üçüncü kitabının tercümesini Arzu Akgün yapmış. Okuduğum tercüme kitaplar içinde açık ara en akıcı ve anlaşılır olanı buydu sanırım. Böyle olunca kitabın tamamını su gibi içtim. Arzu Akgün’ün de burada en az yazar kadar takdir edilmesi gerekiyor. Ben teşekkür ediyorum.

4 stars. This reads a lot like Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind at times, except that it's over really quick, only a hundred something pages, and I finished it too fast. It's a good introduction to the topic of the ancient world though.
"You might think that the ancient world is dead and buried. You might not notice it in your everyday life. But it's still there. If you can't see it it's because you're not looking for it. Once you do you'll realize how all pervasive it is. Or at least how widespread is a later reinvention of it. Whether it's the perception of Islam, civilization or architecture, the way we see can still be affected by the accumulated views and classical interpretations of those who have seen before us."

A very readable and informative introduction to the ancient world. The book is about not only the high classes but also the ordinary people we don't usually see. Toner talks about things such as how normal people lived in ancient times. What they did for a living or how they experienced death and their feelings in short the the ancient life as a whole. I definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in ancient times.

I enjoy Ideas in Profile books for short trips. They are simple but always enjoyable. Not a lot new in this one but the focus on "normal" people in the ancient world was interesting. History is written by the winners and the elite so it was interesting to see Toner explore the world of slaves, women, elderly, farmers, etc. Definitely a worthwhile short read.

Nothing new here. If you are familiar with the basic ancient Greek and Roman history you will find it a bit boring, but if you are new to this, you will find it interesting.

I read this before and it really hasn't aged well. "Ancient" world means Rome and this author's view of Rome.
