The Royals #1

The Crown

Rate this book
This Royal standalone is a modern-day fairytale that features a sexy alpha Prince, a hot and reckless twin brother, and the American girl who will bring a King to his knees.

I’ve got three months before I’ll be crowned King of Elleston—all because I was born two minutes before my twin brother. I thought I'd have more time, but with my father's recent death and fifty million people looking at me to lead, it's time to put aside my personal aspirations and take the crown.

Duty. Honor. Royalty.
Love is a luxury I don't have—not with a royal betrothal our laws demands I uphold.
The lines that define my choices are black and white.

But when I collide with a pink-haired American goddess who brings my world back into startling color, I know I can’t take the crown without tasting her first. Willa is everything I’ve ever wanted—smart, sexy, funny, and wickedly independent. She accepts the stakes, knows our relationship has an expiration date, but I’m prepared to take on Parliament and the other Royals to make her officially mine.

That is, until I find out that she’s hiding secrets of her own. Secrets that could ruin everything I’ve worked for to keep us together.

Could have been 5 stars but i knocked it down to 4 for one reason:
The hero asked the heroine to be his mistress while he's married to another woman out of desperation to keep her and the h actually DEBATES DOING IT!!!
Ugh...
FUCK. THAT. NOISE.
Would have punched him in the balls if anyone ever asked me to be their mistress while he fucks his real wife.
Other than that, excellent book. I love it when the heroines keep the hero's on their toes and surprise them and are written as equal counterparts to the heros. This h was strong and in control of her sexuality so A+ to that.

Side note: I will not in this life or the next be reading Jamesons book with Charlotte. Fuck manwhores, they don't deserve a happy ending.

I hate books with a royal storyline. It cringes me out because they almost always make the royal family a copy of the British values. There's rarely any originality to it. It's pretty much a basic European place with a monarchy and "accents". 🙄

Obviously Prince Alexander "Xander" who is supposed to ascend to the throne abdicates when he falls in love with a commoner:

“I, Prince Alexander, yada-yada, hereby abdicate my throne. Or my right to the throne. Whatever it is.”

Like really? Are you being fucking serious? No one would say this - period. The blase disrespectful way he thinks he could say and get away with it. I didn't like the hero at all. I warmed to him post 50%, but he was meh. I didn't like his relationship with Charlotte either (his betrothed) even though she's meant to like his twin.

Willa is an American who authors erotica under a pen name and children's books. She was so stupid that it was unreal. I didn't feel sorry for her when she was ridiculed by the press for not knowing jack shit about the country or its politics. She wanted the prince to fill her in. Ignorance is not attractive - you get Trump supporters that way. The Prince has shit to do, he can't give you an education crash course 101 on his country. It's not 1955. There's google. She should have taken initiative to do her research. I found her pathetic. She pursued him, lessened her value for him (when she for a brief point ponders being his mistress) and she apologies for writing erotica (because it's bad for his title). I couldn't stand that to be honest.

She's just stupid.
"Of course, I hadn’t known my birth control would fail after one tiny minor case of jet-lag that resulted in me forgetting to take it on time. Not that I regretted it, now.”

Don't even get me started on how I'm not reading about his twin brother Jameson. Having sex with half the country and supposedly in love with Charlotte whilst she witnesses his slutty ways. And the next book is supposed to be about them. Nah.

Good God this was terrible

I feel like there are two writers that must make up the pen name Samantha Whiskey. There’s the writer who creates the amazing worlds found in Cannon and Logan’s books. And then there’s the second half of the duo that writes underdeveloped trite waste of words like this and the vampire book that just came out. It just can not be the same person who is capable of writing Cannon that would write something as meaningless as this book

The Crown is an escapist, fun & sexy royal romance. Willa is a children's author and a secret erotica author who lives life on her terms. She doesn't care what others think about her and it's just one of the great things about her. Xander is a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Someday he'll be King and be forced to marry a woman whom he thinks of as a sister. You see, he's the older twin by a few minutes, so the crown will be his, not James. And because of the outdated laws in his country, he has to marry a woman of royal blood, hence his soon to be announced betrothal to Charlotte, the woman he loves, but only like a friend or a sister. One day he crashes his brother's car into a snow bank and Willa's house is the first he sees with lights on. She takes him in, accidentally tasers him! and a connection is forged. But Xander only has 3 months before he has to take the crown and announce his betrothal. Will Willa, this gorgeous, fun loving, pink-haired woman agree to a fling with a guaranteed expiration date? Will he be able to walk away from her at the end?

I loved The Crown. It's fun, it's sexy, it's sweet and Xander and Willa are one of those couples you just root for from the minute they meet. He's got so much pressure on him and she's the opposite in her live life the way she wants way. Watching them fall in love and knowing they can't ultimately be together was pure torture, because I fell in love with them both. If you like your royal romances with heart, and heat, put The Crown on your TBR list today!

I received an ARC for an honest review.

I didn't like his speech when denouncing the throne, it was so disrespectful to his people and the worse part was when he just up and left the stage without even calling out to the brother indicating that the throne now falls on him...
Though, I did enjoy the way and the strength he loves Willa and the fight to keep her in his life and make her his Queen, I also adore the part that he was able to introduce a new law to this people which includes women's right to rule on their own and not aside their husbands, that was a strong strength and indication of equality..
Willa mess up by not taking her bed controlled drugs I can understand that, it happens sometimes but the presentation that was given on the scene was wrong..
I can understand Jameson feelings of being a spare and using that to sabotage himself but he should have been a bit discreet as he is from a royal family and keep his whoring self from the palace staff especially the brother's staff but I like the fact that he went out of his way to get the brother's love back to him, and also the face that he acknowledged the brothers misery...
I love Sofie, I suspect that there's something between here and Oliver but I wasn't mentioned.. it okay
In all it is a good read and what I adore must was the strength of Love represented in it...

What a fun read

This is the first book by this author that I have read and this book totally hooked me. The banter between Cancer and Willa was exceptional and it just made me cheer them on to their happier ever after. The secondary characters were well developed and it led you to hope for more books highlighting their own stories. I recommend this book it was a nice read.

Cliche

Every royal cliché you can think of is in this book. Its characters are shallow and the h is awful. Willa is unsympathetic, in fact she is pathetic and just gross. I knew how this book would go from the start and I was right. Awful. I don't find women who fall insta lust relatable. I don't find character's who put off real conversation for sex relatable or likable. I didn't care about these characters at all. Its a simplistic story with sex in it. Don't waste time or money.

The Crown is the first book in this series and is Xander's story. His twin brother, Jameson, will have his own story in The Throne, which is due for release in October 2017. The Crown can be read as a standalone but you'll definitely be left wanting to read the second book after reading this one.

“I wanted more of her smiles, her honesty, her sense of humor. I needed her like oxygen to a suffocating man, food to the starved... any cliche I could think of, well, that was her.” - Xander

Samantha Whiskey is a new author to me, so I wasn't sure what to expect with her work but I can honestly say that I absolutely loved The Crown and can't wait for Jameson’s story. This book may be described as ‘A Modern-Day Fairytale Romance’ but it's so much more and throws in a few surprises along the way. Samantha gives the reader an unexpected plot twist towards the end and even though things don't go as the reader may hope, you'll still be left with a big smile on your face. You also can't help but fall in love with Xander and Jameson who are very different characters despite being twins.

“I gazed up at him, wondering how words were clogging in my throat when I was paid to write them.” - Willa

Xander and Willa make the perfect couple and they will have you hoping that they can find a way to be together despite everything that stands in their way. Xander always knew he'd be King but didn't expect it to happen so soon and struggles with the sacrifices he needs to make for his country. I really felt for Xander as his life was all planned out and he wasn't able to live as freely as his siblings. He also wasn't free to follow his heart. Willa had achieved the dream she'd had since she was a child but after her career took a different turn, she had to keep secrets. What will happen if or when these secrets come out? What will it mean for her and Xander who has to always think of his people? You'll only get the answers by reading The Crown.

Samantha Whiskey’s The Crown: A Modern-Day Fairytale Romance is a great modern twist on a modern day fairytale. Prince Xander is visiting the United States and he finds he needs some help which comes in the form of Willa- a sassy, independent, strong willed female. Willa doesn’t let rules get in her way. When Xander meets Willa, he knows that he needs her in his life for what he has planned and will need her around for the next 3 months…and in order for what he needs to happen, he needs her to agree to be o be his for 3 months before he takes the Throne. Oh that’s the thing, Xander is a prince who thought he had years before he would be Crowned King but that’s all changed. He is due to be crowned shortly and he just wants to live his life as he sees fit and not be forced to marry a woman that whom he was betrothed to.
Willa finds she likes spending time with Xander and they have a lot of fun and there is mad sexy chemistry between them. Willa knows times ticking down on their short term relationship but can she prove to the Crowned King that they belong together or will he leave and go back and marry his betrothed , taking her heart with him?
I loved the exciting pulse of this story and the heat and heart this story has. Xander and Willa made this one fantastic modern day fairytale romance. His twin brother, Jameson, will have his own story in The Throne, which is due for release in October 2017. You don’t want to miss either story for this is pure awesomeness reading!

There comes a time when the royal heir must fulfill his duty and honor. With the death of his father, the King, Xander is now faced with that task. As the eldest twin, he was groomed to be King from an early age and now he must ready himself for the responsibility to lead his people. In addition to the pressures of filling his father’s shoes, he is also betrothed and is set to marry before he can be crowned the next King.

During a visit to New York, he attempts to flee the suffocation of his responsibilities and finds himself stranded after an accident in the snow. He ventures off to find shelter and help and comes across Willa, who instantly captures his attention. Their brief encounter leads to a connection that neither one of them is ready to dismiss.

Xander is totally enamored with Willa and fights tradition to keep her. But when Willa is scrutinized by the royals and parliament, she may not measure up according to their standards. But despite his best efforts to initiate change within the monarchy and parliament he is faced with heavy resistance from the traditionalists. And when a truth is discovered about her, it jeopardizes their relationship.

After learning who Xander is betrothed to, Willa comes to term that she can never be the woman he needs. In efforts to keep her and please parliament along with the rest of the royals, Xander propositions Willa to be his in secret. But can she accept that arrangement knowing that she has already given more than herself to him?

I found it easy to connect and empathize with Xander given his current predicament and desiring to be selfish and choose love. Definitely would recommend this book.

This was a steamy, whirlwind romance between Xander, the soon-to-be King of Elleston, and Willa, a fiery, independent American with a pink-haired flair. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the spicy scenes between them certainly turn up the heat. I loved how Xander and Willa’s relationship brought passion and color to a life full of royal obligations.

The story sets up an intriguing world for future books, and I was especially impressed by Charlotte. She’s a standout character who holds her own, especially when going toe-to-toe with the queen. It's refreshing to see her portrayed as strong and intelligent rather than a one-dimensional rival.

However, a few things left me wanting more. The way Xander denounced the throne felt abrupt and out of character, especially after expressing his deep respect for his country’s traditions. Handing the responsibility to his less-prepared brother could have been handled with more care. Willa’s willingness to become Xander’s mistress also struck a sour note—girl, where’s your self-respect?

There were some moments where I questioned Willa’s reactions, like how she didn’t realize Charlotte was Xander’s betrothed despite multiple hints. And while the male narration was solid, I struggled with the female narration—her pacing was off, and the attempt at a British accent for Xander’s name threw me out of the story each time.

Overall, The Crown is a fun, cliché-filled royal romance with plenty of spice, though a few character decisions and narrative choices held it back from being perfect. Still, a solid read for fans of the genre!

Samantha Whiskey’s The Crown: A Modern-Day Fairytale Romance was a surprisingly engaging read. I love fairytale romances. I grew-up reading Historical Romances with Dukes and Lords and romances with Princes and ‘Cinderella-Type” romances. So while I was excited to read The Crown, I honestly wasn’t expecting the twists that really added to the story and kept me reading through the night.

The Crown starts off when Prince Xander is visiting the United States and ends up needing a little bit of a rescue from Willa- a strong-willed, smart and quirky heroine. I love Willa! She’s independent, strong and knows who she is and what she wants. I really admired her – and her pink taser. ☺

Xander, is not only a Prince, but a twin. He knows he has lots of responsibilities to his country, his family and The Crown. But he falls for Willa and wants to take the 3 months he has before he becomes King to have a little fun and spend time with Willa. I so enjoyed watching these two grow together in the three months. The secondary characters added another layer to this story and then there were some unexpected twists that truly made this story unique.

The Crown was a fast and fun read and I enjoyed every moment of reading it. I can’t wait to read Jameson’s story! I highly recommend a one-click.

Unlike Ms. Whiskey's other books

Not all of Ms. Whiskey's books are alike, which is wonderful. This one is yet again different but not in a wonderful way. Willa meets Xander after a single auto car accident caused by snow, which brings him to her door in NY, just outside of NYC.

Slight spoiler...........you get to this spoiler very early in the book.

She ends up staying with him for a few days in NYC and then heads back to his European country with him to basically be his dirty not-so-secret secret until he has to announce his arranged marriage. Somehow, she misses who he is betrothed to. I was shocked to learn she missed that part. If you are paying closer attention, you'll probably catch it. I probably dozed off at the wrong moment. (I read until my sleeping medicine kicks in. That is not an indication of the draw of the story.)

So, there are parts I enjoyed. I liked most of the characters. Not the Queen, so much, but mostly everyone else. They do have fun together. The PM is even fine. I just didn't find that a woman like Willa, with as much self respect as she had, would up and agree to be a fling for the prince before he lives his "real" life. It would have made me feel dirty.

I liked the second book better but it still is just an average romance. It's still nothing like the intensity of Axel.

Wholly buckets of Royal sexiness!

Yes, absolutely yes- what am I agreeing too? I have no idea, but if it were asked by the scrumptious looking man on the cover of this killer fantasy I would love to be my reality I would be telling him whatever he needed to hear… I mean they say never judge a book by its cover, but with this one, I say do it loud and proud!
Mmhmm- I am all about these modern days Prince Royalty tales, this one took my favorite parts of some more‘ classic’ storylines than ran with it across oceans!
Making for a sizzling, drama-laced, laugh out loud read that carried two connected souls Xander ( Prince Alexander ) and Willa ( Love that name) on an electrical current of lust/trust/adoration.
Intertwine all that with some emotional ups and downs, frustrations and love trying to fight its way into both their lives you have an incredible journey I enjoyed watching unfold.

I am not going to give away the storyline for this hot crazy beast! You just need to read it!
Samantha Whiskey IMO blew this out of the park! I could not get enough of this story, I will be waiting rather impatiently for the next book about Xander's twin brother Jameson, and his eccentric drama filled hot Royal family!

I am a self-confessed avid Samantha Whiskey fan, having read her other series multiple times, and couldn’t believe I hadn’t read The Royals series yet! One of my favourite things she does is the dual-pov narrative between our two protagonists, Xander and Willa. Unfortunately, Willa was a bit one-dimensional, and this narrative included my least favourite romance trope (but I won’t give that spoiler away completely). This story plays on the fairytale of a prince overcoming all odds to marry a ‘commoner’, including his arranged marriage and his ascension to the throne. Xander has to overcome his royal and legal obligations for the woman he loves, leaving his younger brother to take the throne in his place while he abdicates and moves to another country to be with Willa.

Samantha Whiskey sticks to her formula, but not in a dull way. The spicy scenes were well-written and the characters had great chemistry. This book can be read as a standalone, but I recommend continuing the series. In summary, an easy, fun, sexy read that can be completed in one sitting.

If you like this book, I recommend her other series such as the Onyx Assassing (if you’re into paranormal romance), Seattle Sharks, and Carolina Reapers.

⭐⭐⭐- minus two stars for the worst cliche trope included.

I should have just DNF’d this. What grown woman uses the word “tummy” non ironically to describe her stomach or abdomen every chance she gets? Every time the MC said it my skin would crawl from cringing so hard. In general, Willa just never made intelligent decisions so it felt impossible to like her. Xander was also an idiot with no respect for the position he knew his whole life would be his. The ONLY reason he decided to challenge the constitutional laws he claims were outdated was because he falls for this random woman. If he was planning to challenge them before he met her based simply on the fact that they were archaic that’s one thing. But he wasn’t. So… I’m hearing that tik tok song playing in my head… “I’m just thinking with my 🍆”
Another big drawback (that I’m assuming was no fault of the author) was the sub-par audio narration. Halfway through the book the female narrator changed how she said the MMC’s name. No matter the speed I played it at she just had the most insufferable whiny way of speaking. For an already unlikable FMC this was a deal breaker for me. I already have the second book checked out but I’ll be returning it unread unfortunately.

What happens when you feel the weight of the world at your shoulders? Well you feel like you're getting crushed and need to find an escape, and that's exactly what Xander did.

Prince Alexander in an attempt to get away from all the burden that was put upon him decided to find an escape, but with destiny lurking in the shadows he ended up finding more than what he bargained for, a Rainbow Hair, Sassy, petite women, whom he ends up falling in love with, even though they had only agree on having a short-term affair.

Willa is a writer, who writes children's books, but also writes erotica under a pen name. She decided to go back to Xander's home for the duration of the affair, but when things got out of hand something had Willa running for the hills (not literary, more like back home) what could it be? Please read this book you will not be dissapointed. Honestly once you are done you will want to continue reading her next book, Jameson's Story😍

I have broken my Samantha Whiskey cherry with this modern-day fairy tale.

Alexander or Xander is a hot bachelor Prince who isn’t coping particularly well with his looming coronation. To give himself a break from the pressure whilst on a State visit to the US, he takes off for a bit of respite in a car he borrows from his identical twin brother.

When Xander finds himself a victim of the weather Willa becomes his, reluctant, good Samaritan.

The journey through their blossoming relationship is plagued with peaceful protests, an unhappy Queen and a betrothal that has yet to be announced!

Despite this the story is light-hearted just like all fairy-tales should be, even with a wicked Queen!
All the characters have been written in a way that you can’t wait to read their version of happily ever after.

My predictions would be: Jameson and Charlotte, Sophie and Oliver, Brie and Damian - the Prime Minister and I must say, I can’t wait!

Twinkly escapism with fairies on top.

This is the first book I've read by Samantha Whiskey, but it definitely won't be the last!! It drew me in from the beginning, and kept me drawn in with sexy characters, lots of family drama, and of course some steamy scenes. I completely adored Willa. She's smart, funny, and doesn't really back down. Xander is sexy, and it's awesome to see a different side of him when it's just him and Willa. The only thing I didn't like was Xander's mother, but I'm thinking most people in her power would act the same way, so can't hold it against her. And that epilogue??? EVERYTHING!!! It gave me my wish!!!

This book will have you falling in love with these two, and wishing to find a prince of your own. Definitely a must read!!!

I was absolutely hooked from the moment I started reading this book. Xander is next in line to become King and he is too marry his best friend Charlotte but both think of each other as siblings instead of lovers. With having to get away Xander gets stranded on the side of the road and comes a cross a house and there he meets the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, Willa. Willa is an author and never thought she would meet anyone like Xander. Their chemistry is thru the roof but they only can have a couple of months to be together. Will that be enough or will they want a forever? Really enjoyed this story of following your heart and so excited for Jameson's story next.

Great Read!

I love a good fairy tale and couldn't wait to read this one, Xander and Willa are the perfect couple. Even though he knows that there can never be a future for them because he will be king and he must marry a noble woman and Willa is a commoner.
Willa loves Xander for who he is, not for his title but she knows they can not have a future together. Can she spend time with him and not lose her heart? Will Xander be able to let Willa go after their time together is over?
This is a great modern day fairy tale and I loved it. I won a copy and had a little time between books and decided to read this one and I have found a new author in Samantha Whiskey and I can't wait for more in this series.

*sigh* Lots of cliches and an unsatisfying ending.

The good stuff... Written in dual first person POV. Lots of sexy scenes but nothing too risqué. Only a few typos. Fun supporting characters.

The not so good stuff... I’ve read all of the other books by this author and the majority of them were fun but this one just missed the mark with me. Everything in this book is expected - which is odd considering that the female main character is supposed to be quirky and unpredictable. Everything that happens you’ll see coming a mile away. The supposed “LOL” moments are barely a chuckle. The ending isn’t that great and the epilogue sets up book two instead of resolving book one. This book was disappointing as I expected more from this author.

A royal who falls for a commoner.
This book was very similar to another book I read a few months ago.
Xander is prince of a smallish foreign country. His father dies unexpectedly so he, being the eldest, must marry and take the throne. Except he’s really digging being a lawyer and he doesn’t want to marry his betrothed, one if his best friends. (She doesn’t really want to marry him either but duty and all that).
Willa is a reclusive writer. Not sure why she’s a recluse or where her family is or really much about her except she writes children’s books and erotica.
They meet after a snowstorm and a car crash and it’s magical and adorable and sexy too.
The book is good with plenty of sexy times but it felt very familiar and not quite as good as the original.

What a pleasant surprise!

I love fairy tales. And making it modern with a splash of steamy-ness twisted in, I'm in!
I was swooning for Xander and Willa! How they met was so organic! I'm a sucker for love at first sight stories. They were so witty and charming for each other, no angst.
I can go on and on about how much I loved this book but read it for yourself. This was a nice, happy read that you need to devour every once in a awhile. It will put a smile on your face. I was new to this author and would read another of her books. I look forward to Jameson's story!
Oh, and thanks to Facebook for having this book come up in my feed. Sometimes you do good work.
