Are you ready for a simple, straight-forward answer about astrophysics?

Then this summary and analysis companion book based on Astrophysics for Busy People by Neil deGrasse Tyson is for you!

In Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson takes the reader on a voyage from the beginning of our universe and the big bang to our modern world and the need to place our existence within a wider cosmological perspective.

Starting from the big bang, we learn how the expansion and cooling of our universe created the conditions for light to travel across the universe. This light, traveling over billions of years allows astrophysicists to see back in time and reconstruct the events since the creation of our universe.

In this exploration of our cosmos, Tyson introduces us to Newton’s law of gravity and Einstein’s theory of general relativity. While these laws of physics are universal throughout the cosmos and help us understand the movement of the planets and stars, they also open us up to the deeper mysteries of our universe, such as dark matter and dark energy.

Although we may perceive our universe as vast and empty, Tyson explores the space between galaxies and planets in our own solar system, suggesting that what we find in between, is just as interesting to study as the planets and the stars.

Excellent primer for those like me who are completely uniformed. De Grasse Tyson provides the wonder with a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor that keeps the pages turning. He also provides why it is important to keep searching for knowledge, not as a means against belief systems, but as a possibility to questions that consider that if we believe one thing, then maybe, given what we are learning about the cosmos, the other should be logically considered. I ain’t mad at that. Highly recommended!

Less of a scientific book and more of a sermon on the Tyson mount where he espouses his beliefs veiled in “scientific discourses”
He was downright mean and condescending at times.

Humans who rely on fossil fuels can be and should be considered intelligent life forms, without the air quotes and without the snark.

This wannabe Carl Sagan has a ways to go to connect to the humanity he is surrounded by. He lives in the clouds and it shows…

Honestly, I am out of my league with this book. Although it's a simplified introduction to astrophysics, it's still challenging for me to comprehend the essence of the book. Perhaps an introductory course in astrophysics would have allowed me to grasp better some of the basic concepts. It's not for everyone.

I read this a few years ago, but I'm adding it to my list because I really liked it and I like Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you are interested in astrophysics, it is very educational and he makes the concepts very easy to understand and interesting.

I'm a fan of Tyson's ability to make complex stuff accessible for us non-scientific types. But I was hoping for more trippy, holy-cow shit here. It's solid, but gets a bit mired in statistics and theories that run a bit on the dry side. More juicy stuff, Neil!

we live in the universe and the universe lives in us. as we are being bombarded by neutrinos and run into quarks we are not familiar with. It' a good reason to HURRY!

Interesting, short Audiobook read by the author. Handles a lot of complex material without dumbing it down.
