I’m really uninterested in certain types of horror stories, with slashers being high on that list. This was written well and the story was fine, but just not for me. Most of this short story was focused on torture and chase kill scenes. Very standard slasher fare. I watched Texas Chainsaw once and the original Saw once…and Scream 1….once….and that was all I needed to get my fill. I feel like once Saw and Hostel specifically peaked in popularity, so many movies and books jumped on the bandwagon. This book definitely poaches ideas from some of the aforementioned titles, and honestly brought nothing new or overly interesting to the game. If you like slasher stories, this will be fine for you, but for anyone who isn’t, like me, this will not change your stance.

If your idea of fun includes driving through the middle of nowhere under the blistering heat of the sun without a hint of civilization, please count me out. That is a tragedy waiting to happen. I'd rather stay at home with my cats, (the more tolerable monsters, haha.)

But I guess for some people like Lucas and Nina, this road trip is a way to let off some steam before starting their professional lives. What could go wrong? Um, everything, I guess?

Blood? Yes.
Gore? Yes.
Torture? Too much.

Did I like it? I love Jon Athan but I think I've had enough of chainsaw-wielding-crazies at this point.

And yes, the premise about the saliva? That's something that'll gross you out and probably would make you throw up so I'm giving you a heads up.

Even though the characters disagree this has got a very Texas chainsaw massacre feel to it. A great slasher style with plenty of torture.

Sick, twisted, disturbing and fabulous. I came across this author earlier this year because one of his books was on my KU list, but I'm glad I did. Now he's got a new fan. As a fan of Stephen King, let me tell you that Jon Athan is equally as deranged

The injustice from this tale was too much to bear in my brain. It was going all perfectly well untill I read the ending part. I didn't like that, absolutely not...

Bunch of friends Christopher, Lucas, Nina, Kiara, Carlos, James they all somehow stuck in a road from nowhere and didn't know what do in next. While they were duelling to the matter they finally thought they would pass the night anyhow and in the morning take decision what they will gonna do. But as the next day arrive there's two people from their group seems missing and as the day grow with the time they discover an abandoned house suddenly and found a psychopath or say a maniac (Named Micah and got his two wives Daisy and Esther too) who enjoys nothing but butcher human flesh, specially women is his preferable choice. To fulfill his sick wish he was becoming a monster. By then all the groups can do is fight back in anyhow or can they survive the massacre of thier dangerous situation. Time will tell...

Meanwhile the reading journey for me was simply good as I already mentioned till that ending part shown. It was total injustice to those victim at least that sick bustard should given some cruel punishment for the thing he had done. I wish there's a sequel for this story to read. That's all. Thanks for reading my review...

A group of friends find themselves at the hands of a depraved maniac while traveling through Texas. He lives in an isolated house perfect for his twisted plan... to receive the saliva of his female victims.

This book is another incredible one that kept me hooked from that first page.

Jon Athan is incredibly talented, but beware he is an extreme horror author so you will be encountering all kinds of awful acts in his books. If you're looking for one to start off with, this is a good one because it's very violent but not quite as extreme as some of the others. A very good starting point, along with The Social Media Murders by the same author.

Horror/extreme horror and thriller fans ready to step into something a bit more extreme, this is one for you!

My wild marathon of Athan books continues with this graphic and fun slasher novel. I thought that the serial killer’s motive of drinking saliva to gain their victom’s strength was unique here but Athan confirms that the book was inspired by a real killer with similar goals. Readers of Bryan Smith and Richard Laymon should get a kick out of this.
After reading several Athan novels though, I am noticing him using the same words or phrases that are getting very redundant. A character might try to perform a task successfully but “to no avail.” After failing, they may “dig their fingers into their hair.” Then, while standing outdoors on the GROUND, they might fall on the “floor.” Floors are part of a structure. Floors are not fields, woods, or even a parking lot! I am obviously just being overly critical here and, the guy does write at a frantic and impressive pace, but I have come to expect these three words or phrases in every novel even more than the graphic scenes. I keep hoping that the next book will not include these repetitive things but... to no avail. Wow, I am an asshole. I am having a blast with this Athan marathon and, although he will likely never see this, I am just a happy customer still bitching about small things like a spoiled, entitled American. I am critiquing novels and I haven’t written a damn one despite trying many times. Still, Stephen King is my favorite author and I will say that he does the same thing over, and over, and over... “ran away like his hair was on fire and his ass was catching.” “Close enough for government work.” Referencing the JFK assassination in every damn novel and story until finally just writing a fantastic novel about it. There are a lot of words in the English language and stupid platitudes or idioms to be avoided. Until then, I will just have to admit that every dog has his day and I won’t be able to turn the tables until authors wake up and smell the coffee before reading their wives the riot act about said coffee being cold and then writing a dime a dozen novel which would turn out to be a blessing in disguise because, to avoid beating around the bush, it would make him land in the lap of luxury, gaining him the approval of his dad which was better late than never, but his dad had to bite the bullet and break a leg when telling his son that he was a worthless alcoholic and that he should call it a day for his writing career but the son was all like, “cut me some slack,” so the father was like, “I can’t because you have been cutting corners,” so then later the son was having sex with his totally of age wife and trying to put it in when she was like, “easy does it,” because she didn’t want the hot, spicy sex to get out of hand but he just wanted to get something out of his system and get his act together after being scolded by his dad who definitely did not give him the benifit of the doubt so he decided that, after filling his girl’s snatch with goof juice, he would go back to the drawing board and, as he thrust violently into her, he told her to hang in there because he was hitting the sack and doing it fabulously because sex isn’t rocket science and she promised that she would let him off the hook if he made her cum 69 billion times in a row and he was on cum 68,999,999999, and, to make a long story short, they fucked too long and missed the boat which was to take them on their No Pain, No Gain cruise but he was not on the ball because he dropped the ball while pulling her leg... behind her head so he could try to pull himself together and cum already before the boat left but so far so good was not in his mind and, speak of the devil, that was the last straw and the copulating couple could not have the best of both worlds because they realized that they had aged fifty years because time flies when you are having fun but, unlike his penis, the writer did not get bent out of shape but, to make matters worse, his aged girlfriend was under the weather and thought she might die but he thought, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it, and while thinking this, he was able to wrap his head around the thought of losing his precious girl and you can say that again and your guess is as good as mine as to why he came to terms with it so quickly and then his dick exploded into 421 individual chainsaws and flew off into the universe, persuing certain, carbon-based life forms, that had an aversion to being vivisected into bits of hyperbole.

A second, she thought, I need a second to breathe, I can't run if I can't breathe.

As the road to adulthood was rapidly spiraling into their lives, young couple Nina Nakamura and Lucas Santiago set off with friends on one final amazing road trip adventure. Settling through rural Texas, the humidity and heat were oppressing and the roads around them barren as the isolation of small towns continued to show. Siblings Andrea and James Stone found themselves along for the ride, before the group stumbled upon another car needing help. Another couple, Kiara Foster and Christopher Hayes found themselves traveling with long time friend Carlos to a music festival before their tire went flat. Confused how to change it, it was a blessing when the groups stumbled upon one another, sparking an immediate connection and trust. As the groups merged to one, drinking and marijuana came to play as Andrea and Carlos booked up in a tent. When morning would trickle by, the discovery of them missing sent shockwaves through everyone, forcing them to separate and hunt for their missing people. As the Sheriff of the small town, Micah Wakefield seemed unimpressed by their story, he agreed to help look as they stumbled upon an impressive mansion style hone. Bones and remains littered the fields, and the truth of the murders would come. With his wives Daisy and the disfigured Esther was discovered, the group was slaughtered as he found his quest to consume 40 sixteen ounce jars of saliva from murdered woman. Sought from after a prophetic dream form his father came to promise him immortality then. With Nina being the final survivor, he takes her on as another wife, searching for twenty girls under seventeen for their saliva as well.

She was appalled by her crudely-sewn stitches and abscesses. She couldn't even stare her in the eyes since her left eye appeared to be permanently sealed. The woman emerged from Nina's worst nightmare—a living embodiment of the boogeyman.

3 stars (or, 3 jars of spit)

Utterly gross and yet, I had a good time.

As usual with Athans, the pacing was strong; once the story got going, it really went. The villain was genuinely interesting, and his rationale was laid out in a way that felt coherent within the world. I do think his wives could’ve used a bit more depth, but there was enough there for me to understand the broad strokes of their motivations.

The main characters, however, felt pretty expendable. Given the nature of this book, that isn’t necessarily a flaw, but I personally prefer having someone to properly root for. Here, I found myself oddly indifferent to whether they survived, which dulled some of the tension.

I actually appreciated Athans’ note at the end about the alternate ending he considered and why he ultimately chose the one he did. Honestly, I think I would’ve preferred the version he didn’t pick. From the handful of his books I’ve read, he tends to lean toward the more “rational” or “realist” route (as much as that word applies to his work), and I would’ve enjoyed seeing him push into something a bit more paranormal for a change.

For context: I’m absolutely disgusted by spit, bogies, and vomit (blood doesn’t bother me… interpret that however you like), so there were definitely moments that made me physically recoil. But honestly, that’s exactly the kind of reaction I want from a horror book, and this one delivered in full.

I’d definitely recommend it. Possibly the grossest thing I’ve ever read, and I mean that as a compliment 🫙

This is a great short story that does it’s best with its length.

The characters can’t be fully fleshed out, but we know enough to feel appalled or sympathetic. The pacing is good- and while the torture scenes ARE graphic, it’s not the focus of the story and so it’s not very long or overdone.

In my opinion though, the best part of this book is the descriptions. Jon Athan is a MASTER at writing gore. The way a face is mangled, or a body spasms as it’s mutilated- it’s fucking brutal poetry.

I actually gagged while reading the dinner scene. The descriptions were AMAZING.

Also, I loved the fact that the villain was inspired by a real serial killer who did in fact drink the saliva of dead women- it makes it clear that this story was far more realistic then we would like to think.

This is my first time reading a book by Jon Athan, and I am excited to say that I can’t wait to see what he can do with a full length novel. He’s a classic horror writer in the making, and I’m excited to read his future works!

Happy Reading! :D

Terrible, if it weren't in digital format of use it as T.P!!

Okay....as I have mentioned in quite a few of my reviews for other books, I have an extremely varied reading history. I'm almost always willing to give a new author a chance - or one that is at least new to me. Because of this,I have actually stumbled across some very talented writers and are now my "go to" authors .
A few weeks ago I stumbled across one of Jon Athan's book of shorts. Now I realize that the stories are violent and graphic horror...however, I also find them amusing.
Other than the fact that J.A. used a handful of words (that seem ridiculous) repeatedly to become more annoying than anything, I've been entertained . That is until this crap of a story!!!
Undoubtedly the worst chainsaw massacre knock off. I'm so disappointed that I even wasted the time to read this book.
The author brags that he is releasing a book every 28 days maybe he should focus on quality instead of quantity.

Not gonna lie… this was definitely on the weaker side of Jon Athan books that I have read. Even in slashers it’s rare when I can’t root for any character and don’t care what would happen. The whole point of slashers is well… slashing people, and if I can’t care about the cast then 90% of the scenes mean nothing to me. On top of that, the characters actions didn’t make sense and I could predict a lot of the scenes before they happened. Also the overall concept was kind of stupid.

But something about Jon Athan’s fast paced writing style makes me not able to rank this book any lower than 3 stars. Considering this is one of his earlier novels, it all makes sense. His writing definitely improved to the point where I think he’s now one of the top horror authors. The fact that this is my least favorite novel by Athan yet it’s still 3 stars should say a lot.

The "gross factor" of this book made me literally want to puke... quite frequently. Well done on that score, Mr. Athan! I wasn't thrilled, however, with how the story ended. I didn't feel a sense of closure. For me, it didn't "fade to black". Rather, it "faded to gray". Which, I think left just enough variance in the shadows to allow the glow of a feasible sequel to be discernable in the distant background. And, I fervently hope he writes that sequel.

Also, I thought a more fitting title might be "Drool and Die".

The ending is unexpected

Love the ending and how it will eventually lead to another sequel of how Nina would adjust to her new “life”. Maybe it will her to abiding the sheriff while planning her escape with the sheriff finally dead and his vision diminishes. I enjoyed this book very much.

Good book, but the ending was terrible. Micah deserved to die, but he was allowed to live and imprison Nina. I sincerely hope to read a sequel. Anyways, Micah Wakefield was inspired by Ahmad Suradji, aka "The Sorcerer", right? It was horrifying to learn that a monster like Micah existed in the real world. Well, fortunately The Sorcerer is dead and I sincerely hope the same happens to Micah.

I loved the writing in this book, the chase, hiding and fighting scenes were awesome as per usual from a Jon athan book and i really enjoyed most of the plot but I just found the 'point' of the murders a little bit..... ridiculous and kinda lost interest at that point. I finished but wouldn't read again, this is my least favorite book by this author.
