I should have looked at the author's name before I picked this up.
I attempted to read Jillian Dodd's Keatyn Chronicles sometime within the past year. I don't remember exactly when it was because it was a completely forgettable experience. I picked it up because the reviews called it "amazing" and a "wonderful romance." I found Keatyn to be a vapid teenage girl and the plot to be nonexistent. It was really an excuse for the author to talk about clothes, drinking underage and casual sex.
Given the above, Spy Girl could be summed up as what would happen if Keatyn was a spy instead of an actress. Lots of talk about clothes, underage drinking and casual sex.
I don't even remember the main character's name, that's how forgettable this book was. I do remember some key points, though. She wasn't tactical. She didn't think like the best spy ever from the best spy academy ever. She thought like an 18 year old girl. She was easily distracted by hot bodies, hair and makeup teams, pretty dresses and champagne. At the climax of the book, she left her assignment because teenage girls can't go to the bathroom by themselves.
That, my friends, is why we don't entrust our national security to teenage girls.
The entire thing was so cringe that I can't believe I even got through it. Not on my worst "I just want to distract myself by reading some trash" day would I pick up the second installment of this book.
It gets 2 stars because the author could write a complete, grammatically correct sentence. But only 2 stars because she couldn't be bothered to make it interesting.

Spy Girl by Jillian Dodd
4.5 stars!!!
Jillian Dodd never fails to engage me in her tales of youth, fashion and drama and in her brand new YA/NA series we have an added twist. Spy Girl is exactly what it says on the cover, we have secret covert Spy Missions, a girl who was trained for eight years in all things spy, a kickass heroine who has no fear and was top of her class in everything and a girl who was willing to do anything to get the job done. Think of a cross between James Bond, Spy Kids and Nancy Drew and you will have Spy Girl.
Spy Girl is "X" an orphan that was put in the spy academy at the tender age of 14, now 22 she is fully trained and has just been given her first mission. "X" to me was a younger version of a kick ass Angelina Jolie in Mr & Mrs Smith that had all the moves to back up her reputation as being the best of the best, this girl has balls and is not afraid to use them. X or Huntley, the name her persona was given was fearless, stubborn and intelligent, but to me her greatest asset was herself. She was beautiful on the outside but just as beautiful on the inside too and it was these character traits that really helped her infiltrate and commandeer the attention of the Montrovian royalty.
First mission ~ protect the Prince of Montrovia at all costs and take out the enemy.
Montrovia to me was glamourous Monaco, with all its fashion, high end retail, yachts, casinos and its own monarchy, so while reading, I had this little rich man’s playground firmly in my thoughts. Through vivid imagery I was there in spirit with Huntley von Allister, her brother and their bunch of “spy” friends. One of the first rules of Spy Academy is to not become emotionally involved, but this is Jillian Dodd we are talking about and none of her books would be complete without her “hotties” and Spy Girl is no different…there are plenty. This book, in true Jillian Dodd style has some fantastic chemistry and will certainly have people picking teams as Huntley fights her way through this mission. In a playboy’s playground and with other hottie spies there was an abundance of temptation and a girl only has so much restraint.
While this book is action packed we also have the underlying story of who Huntley is and how she ended up in the Academy so the suspense and intrigue follows through on two angles, firstly, who is trying to kill the Prince of Montrovia and two, who is Huntley von Allister? Jillian Dodd weaves a fascinating tale while perfectly balancing it with humour, great dialogue and her fun and flirty persona that is prevalent throughout. With kids living the life of riley and gadgets and gizmos aplenty this book has something for everyone and will appeal to the spy in all of us and brings together a fun, flirty and thrilling read.
I cannot wait to see what Spy Mission “X” is put on next, while this mission may be complete there is still so much to learn. This series has endless possibilities and has longevity stamped all over it, I for one cannot wait and as I have always said, this author always brings out the younger me and I love living vicariously through her stories and her characters.
Another great addition to my Jillian Dodd bookshelf.

I started reading this because the other book I was reading was kind of boring me, but this one was even worse! It's more of a 1.5 star read, but I'm rounding up because I actually finished it.
My first problem with it was that it was new adult romance. The heroine was largely forgettable, though she was quick witted. I hated how much she bed hopped and was fairly proud of that fact. I couldn't understand who her "brother" was, and what the conspiracy was surrounding her. It never gets fully explained, either. She breaks the "major rule" and yet winds up a Hero anyway, continuing on with missions. The book was too vague to make sense!
All in all, this was largely forgettable, and I'm abandoning the series and deleting it from my Kindle.

The 18-year-old protagonist, X, is one of the top students at Blackwood Academy, a boarding school for young spies. She's given her first mission before she even graduates: keep Lorenzo Giovanni Baptiste Vallenta, the Crown Prince of Montrovia, alive. Her new identity: Huntley, a 20-year-old socialite who has just learned that she has a 21-year-old brother named Ari (also a spy, but with a slightly different mission) and a billionaire father. Their "father" has just died, and it's common knowledge that they both stand to inherit billions as long as they spend the next six months getting to know each other.
Although aspects of her situation don't quite add up, Huntley rapidly gets down to business, befriending those closest to the Prince and enjoying the money, cars, clothes, and house supposedly left to her and Ari by their father. The Prince needs all the help he can get - his security is riddled with holes, mostly due to his own love of women and parties, and there are multiple people in his life who might have reason to kill him.
I found out about this book via one of the panels at Book Bonanza 2019 and ended up buying it and getting it signed at the author's table. "YA spy series" sounded like my kind of thing. Now that I've actually read it, I can say that 1) it isn't YA and 2) it's definitely not my kind of thing. I wish the author had marketed it as what it actually is, New Adult, because then I could have avoided it and saved myself some money, brain space, and time.
The things I liked: it was a quick read, and the mystery of X/Huntley's past and plans for her future were interesting enough that I wouldn't mind reading spoilers for the later books. I just don't plan to continue on with the series myself. Oh, and I like the cover.
I knew this book wasn't going to be for me when Huntley hooked up with Daniel, one of the Prince's acquaintances, by page 40. She'd known him for maybe a few hours by that point. The sex wasn't particularly explicit, but it was definitely vigorous and on-page.
After that, Huntley spent most of the book shopping for expensive clothes and accessories, driving one of her new expensive cars, and lusting after whichever hot guy was in her immediate vicinity. Occasionally, she mistook her lusting for actual emotions, which resulted in one of the weakest love triangles I've ever read. There were a few opportunities for her to save the Prince's life, but that was mostly because the Prince was an idiot who'd structured his life around having easy access to hot women, even if that meant having enormous holes in his personal security. Huntley should barely have been a blip on his radar, someone new for him to have sex with and then forget about. However, she played hard to get, which apparently works like an aphrodisiac in this book.
I wasn't fond of the author's use of first-person present tense POV - I don't know if it was intended to somehow humanize Huntley, but instead she was oddly emotionally distant. It was like she felt whatever emotions were convenient for a particular scene and then forgot about them later. This was most noticeable with the "love triangle." When she was with Daniel, she'd feel her heart soften for him, worry that she was falling for him, and fret over the parts of her training that stated she shouldn't get emotionally involved with others. When she was with the Prince, she felt the exact same things, but for him instead, like Daniel didn't exist.
The overall world-building was ridiculous. I could sort of be on board with a school for teenage spy candidates. I was less pleased when it was revealed that And I downright rolled my eyes at every mention of what life was supposedly like for citizens of Montrovia. In Montrovia, all hotels were 5-star and poverty didn't exist.
It'd be nice to find out what Black X's plans are for Huntley, and I'm morbidly curious about Dodd's plans for the romance aspects of this series (my theory: the Prince and Daniel are out, or will be, and there will be an overarching love triangle involving Huntley, Ari, and William, the 30+ year old hottie British spy that Huntley has had a crush on for years). However, I'm not interested enough to subject myself to more of this.

Definitely a Teen read. YA all the way with this one, but it was still really good.
I thought this was a really cute, innocent romance/action story. It was written very well. It didn't have too much or too little hotness to it (which made it more innocent) and it had enough action and details to keep me interested.
The character development was ok. It was your average development of characters to be honest.
The plot was written rather well. I enjoyed it immensely.
I can't wait for the next book! 4.5 star rating:)

I've put myself through enough of this torture and I refuse to continue.
I don't usually DNF books. I try my best to finish them even if I hate them.

Wow, this little beauty stunned me. When I began reading this I wasn’t expecting be left in complete awe of this ladies work. Seriously, just wow.
A secret agent with a mission to get close to the prince and protect him. Her first mission and she’ll do everything in her power to succeed. Teaming up with another agent they go undercover as sister and brother to try and solve the mystery of the assassination attempts on the prince and along the way they uncover a few hidden secrets and get in to a whole lot of trouble.
This is the very first book I’ve ever read that’s included a spy, I absolutely loved the James Bond and Mission Impossible mixture for the spy name, very clever. The life of a spy seems so intense and fun, something I’d never be able to do. You can see how this author loves spies.
This is my first read by this author and really hope I’m able to read the next books in the series. I’m eager to see what she’ll do when she comes face to face with that man. Brilliant story and characters, they blew my mind, just perfect.

Quick fun read! Not as predictable as first thought so will keep me interested in how it unfolds more in the sequel l! Definitely a love triangle here & not at all sure what team I’m on as love them both though didn’t really have full picture of it! Enzo thé prince is so sweet & duh royalty, but Daniel has this sexy come hither look she can do dangerous stuff & be impulsive with in & out of the bedroom! Would recommend it’s very demure actually minus the cussing & thé action spy thriller/killer parts!

Maybe Ally Carter just absolutely killed it when she wrote the Gallagher Girls because no teen spy novel I have read since ever seems to even be able to remotely compare, but this book, however, was a special case.
A special case in that it was written so shittily ( yep I'm making up a new word that's how bad it was) written, that it really couldn't even be considered an espionage story at all. Rather than that it played out and even read as a 13-year-old's fantasy transcribed on Wattpad.

I'm mostly a fan of Jillian Dodd. But I have issues with her too. I've read every book in the Keatyn chronicles (which I loved) and also I read Fame (which was actually pretty horrible, like a poorly made, budget porno), and I read That Boy series (which I loved loved the most). Jillian Dodd definitely has a distinct writing style. She's a capable and intelligent writer and for the most part I'm entertained by her. But her writing style is a little abrupt. A tiny bit robotic maybe. Or maybe robotic isn't the right word. It's almost like I'm reading a play by play of events. An example from this book of what I mean (not in the exact words but this is how it feels when reading): "someone shoots at the prince. The prince orders his bodyguards to take us home. Once back at the palace, we immediately are kissing. But even though I don't want to, I have to tell him to stop. Just then his bodyguard interrupts us and tells the prince he needs to be in a security meeting. He asks if I'll stay at the castle but I tell him I'd like to go home. Once back at the house I take a long hot shower". See what I mean when I say it has a "play by play" writing style. That's kinda how her writing feels. Again, it isn't horrible or anything and I don't necessarily not like it, but I'd like her to slow down a bit. Add more emotion. Also, the female lead from this book, Huntley, is basically the spy version of keatyn from the keatyn chronicles books. They are the same character. Headstrong, fun, independent women who are extremely comfortable with their sexuality and who have plenty of male attention. The good thing is that I like keatyn/Huntley for the most part. At least she isn't another annoying, whiny, or uptight generic female lead. But it would be nice if the author could mix it up a little so I feel like I'm reading a different book. But the worst thing about this book is that it is just so fantastical. As in sooooooooooo unrealistic. It should be categorized as a fantasy because there isn't one thing in this story that would actually happen. Not. One. Thing. Now, I'm fine with books being a little implausible as it's obviously needed to make a good fun story but there needs to be some realism mixed in with the unlikely. The happenings in this book aren't even unlikely. They are so ridiculously outlandish that it was to the point that I had to just finish it pretending like I was a twelve year old girl fantasizing about what it would be like to be a spy and having a prince fall in love with me. I mean, we are talking about an 18 year old newly out of spy school, being given an important mission to head up, and, in 8 days, she successfully and without even one hiccup completes her mission practically single handedly. When I say everything about this book is unrealistic I am not exaggerating. It is complete pretend and I felt like it was the pretending of a 12 year old girl. It's like Dodd didn't even try at all to make it seem at least somewhat realistic. But I was fairly entertained the whole time and I wanted to finish it at least. So that's a good thing for me. I definitely didn't hate this book at all. But if you've read the keatyn chronicles you'll know exactly what to expect from this book. Just more unrealistic.

I'm not usually one for new adult reads, but SPY GIRL, the first offering in the Spy Girl series, was so ridiculous and funny and intriguing that I absolutely couldn't put it down! Huntley was a bad. ass. chick. With her fabulous (and totally unrealistic) spy gear, she was undercover personified. I loved that she loved men and went after what she wanted without guilt or regret. Between seductive Prince Lorenzo, sexy Daniel, spylicious Ari and a host of other playboys, Huntley flirted her way through Montrovia. I adored the storyline and the plot twists too, it was all so over the top yet cheerful and sexy and intriguing at the same time. I seriously can not wait to dig into the next book in the Spy Girl series, The Assassin!

This was just a NO. There was no build up at all, everything was so fast and there was no connection.
And what the heck is up with X, or Huntley, or whatever you wanna call her? I just didn't like her....all she did was sleep and mess around with guys... she was most definitely not my favorite and I disliked her a lot. And that ending sucked... the only reason I finished this book was because it kept me entertained to see wtf can happen next with all this craziness.
On the back of the book, they mention, "This page turner will have you spellbound and drooling over your new book boyfriend." Uuuuummmmmmm.... SAY WHAT? Which guy are they talking about because theres like 3 dudes. And they had no personality. Sooooooo....hate to say it to ya but...I aint drooling over any of these characters.

DNF....
I started it but I couldn't read more than 20% and then I returned it.....was just not what I was expecting. I am a big fan of the Gallagher Girls book series or the TV Show Alias and was hoping for something similar but this one was just meh....

Umm... so yeah this book was a glorified female teenage James Bond. I kid you not. There were weapons in shoes and watches, and of course the MC was the perfect female specimen who could kick ass, was great in bed, perfect hair and body, and everybody just loooooooooved her. Boring.
I need interesting characters who are flawed because, news flash, people aren't perfect. But I have come to find that Dodd just loves her perfect Barbies. And Spy Girl was no different unfortunately.
The plot? Well, someone is trying to assassinate the Prince of Montrovia and the only person who can stop this and uncover the plot is a teenage girl who hasn't even graduated spy school.
There was zero chemistry between any of the characters and all anyone wanted to do was drink, have sex, and shop. Great ways to foil an assassination. I honestly kept getting the side characters mixed up because they all sounded the same. Spoiled, rich kids. And while Dodd tried to create tension with this side plot of how the MC is super important somehow, it just fell flat. The MC gave us nothing emotionally so why did I care what happened to her?
As for the writing itself, it's pretty simplistic and straight forward. Dodd told you what to see and feel instead of really showing us. And the constant switch between the 1st person POV of the MC and the 3rd person narrative from one of the side characters was really jarring and I'm not quite sure why it was needed as it added nothing to the plot.
This is apparently a 7 book series and I cannot imagine what could happen for 7 books. And I'm not sure I want to find out.

Wow what a story!! Spy girl has a little bit of everything. A strong, smart and sexy female lead with a lot of hotties sprinkled around. I loved the action and the all the gadgets she used to spy and get out of sticky situations. I also love that I can share this series with my daughter. It definitely will keep your interest it's a pretty fast read which is good because I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next adventure! Who are we saving next!!

I enjoy Jillian Dodd's books, they are ones that when I pick them up I don't want to put them down until I am done, and I admit that with this series I went one right after the next ready to continue the journey.
Huntley is Agent X, well that is how everyone at Blackwood academy knows her. She has been at this academy since her mother and father were killed. Now she is being trained to be a killer, and her main motivation is to one day work for the organization that will let her get revenge on her parents death.
Sooner then she is expecting she is pulled out of blackwood and placed on her first assignment. Her cover is all set up and she is going to be living amoung the 1%ers It is a life unlike she had ever known. Huntley is her cover and she is paired with Ari to play the role of her brother. There is just something about Ari that makes Huntley comfortable and a great partner.
Huntley's first assignment is to go to Montrovia and protect their Prince. Along the way Huntley meets some new friends and starts questioning all the lessons Blackwood taught her.
So let go of some of the unreality of this book and then it is a great read. Huntley is a kick ass heroine however she has been sheltered and brought up to be an assasian with no emotional attachments, the more Huntley is in real life the more she questions if that is possible.

I didn't like this book, or the little that I read of it.
It just seemed a bit too spy cliché - being sent out on 'missions', needing to burn notes as soon as the information is memorized ect... The book might have gotten better if I had read further into the story but I couldn't do it. I need a story that is going to grab my attention and make me want to read until the end but this book just didn't do that. Even though this is the first book I have tried to read by this author, my not liking it doesn't put me off of possibly trying another of their books in the future.

Huntley is a spy and her first mission is to protect the Prince of Montrovia. She has to make him fall in love with her. Ari her pretend brother helps her figure it out who's trying to kill the prince. I love the twists and turns.

My actual rating is 2.5 stars.
To be absolutely fair, I wasn't expecting much when I read this book. In fact, all I expected was a light book to kill time. And that's exactly what I got. It wasn't a literary masterpiece or anything that required much thought. It was easy to read and held my attention.
That being said, I did have some complaints.
The Insta-Love: Seriously, each chapter has a date where it states how many days she's been on this mission. It took less than eight days for her to be convinced that she was in love with both the Prince and Daniel. It really made me annoyed at the whole love triangle relationship. It was just a little over the top.
The Plot: It was more of a romance with a little bit of spy splashed in. It was all really convenient too. Nobody really questioned how she knew to save the Prince's life multiple times and accepted her vague answers. And every male character in the book was attracted to Huntley. Her fake brother, her hook-up Daniel, the British group, the Prince, and for some reason a thirty year old spy that showed up for no reason.
Daniel was seriously useless. He was simply there for Huntley to have a second love interest.
The Prince was simply unbelievable. He was going to propose after eight days. Eight days!
Also, my copy was titled The Prince, not Spy Girl. Maybe there were revisions made to the current copy.

I read this in a night, and I do have to say my lack of sleep is because of this book! Though short I did enjoy reading it and getting hooked by the characters and plot of the book.
I am not one who reads this genre often, reality and spies but I did like this book and can't wait to read the next book
