Wall Street Journal bestselling author SJ Scott wanted to be Luke Skywalker when he grew up.
Unfortunately his complete lack of physical grace and introverted mannerism's kept the earth from having their own Jedi Knight to battle the Sith menace.
Steve “SJ” Scott was born and raised in New Jersey. After finishing college with a degree in psychology he knew he needed to further his education or work on his latte making skills.
During a short stint in US Air Force, Scott was able to get his Master’s in business and then moved on to conquer the business world.
Scott then spent a couple of years working for a company not unlike the company depicted in Mike Judge’s film, “Office Space”. After doing his share of “TPS” reports, Scott swore he would never work for anyone but himself.
He spent the next few years making this happen. Making a decent living online and eventually pivoting to writing books, blogging and even podcasting.
Scott has written over 30 books, most of them in the "self-improvement" genre. An area that he is personally passionate about.
His books have been published in 12 different languages. So he is well on his way to world domination. However, in his heart of hearts he knows he will soon have to venture out into the universe and defeat the Sith menace.
I knew about the TODOIST app and even had it installed on my devices, but, never really took the app seriously. Until now. As someone who has multiple projects, daily tasks, and is addicted to creating a to-do-list, even though they have ben proven inefficient, the TODOIST app is proving to be a game changer in project and task management. But because of its complexity it really needs a simple-to-follow guidebook to navigate people through all of the functions.
This is where the MASTER TODOIST book by Steve Scott steps in to do what most books failed at: provide a “How to use a simple app to create actionable to-do-lists” manual that can be covered in just a few hours and have you on your way to creating better to do lists and managing your work on a new level.
As Steve says about Todoist from the beginning: "Todoist is the perfect tool for managing all your day-to-day tasks. It has a simple design that allows you to start using it within the first five minutes of downloading it. But it’s flexible enough to manage sophisticated projects that involve numerous steps and multiple team members."
As we soon learn about Todoist, it has a simple application that allows users to dive in right away. there are no long explanations or complicated wizardry to figure out with this app. It has an easy-to-use level of functionality that anyone, regardless of their tech know-how, can get to work right away. The reasons we have a book to learn about this is, there are many cool features that people fail to use. Also, if you use Todoist incorrectly, this app can actually hinder your productivity.
The core of the content in this book will teach you how to: *Identify the activities that are most important for your personal and professional life *remember every single date-specific meeting and personal obligation *create projects with clearly identifiable next steps *use Todoist to remove the distractions and “noise” that prevent you from focusing on your big-picture activities *implement the advanced features to streamline the most precious asset that you possess—your time
The Bottom line is, if you are trying to simplify your life and break away from the paper and pen lifestyle, this is definitely the way to go. You can manage complex tasks and projects while scheduling everything right in the app itself. What I love is the “no more paper” idea that, when you get used to using this app because of the easy to follow instructions here, you’ll save money on notebooks.
The book is written to simplify your life. As Steve says about his experience with the app: "As someone who is a recovering pen-and-paper, Post-It Notes for every task, kind of guy, I was drawn to Todoist because I was trying to simplify my life. After a bit of a learning curve, I now use it to manage every task and project in my life. In fact, I use Todoist so much that it’s constantly open on all of my devices—i.e., my iPhone, tablet, and laptop computer."
As Steve points out from the beginning, there are 8 core benefits to using the app: #1. Todoist is available on ALL major platforms. #2. Todoist uses push notifications that act as important reminders. #3. Todoist uses cloud storage to protect your tasks. #4. Todoist offers an inexpensive premium version. #5. Todoist is constantly updated. #6. Todoist has a distraction-free design. #7. Todoist provides one central location for all your information. #8. Todoist allows for easy collaboration.
Steve gets into the basics of the app right away and the various features it utilizes. The book is a very clear step-by-step instructional guide that you can’t now wrong if you follow it. There is also screenshots of all the action steps to provide a more visual walk through of how to set everything up.
The book covers in detail how to: * Identify the activities that are most important for your personal and professional life * Remember every single date-specific appointment, meeting, and personal obligation * Create projects with clearly identifiable next steps * Use Todoist to remove the distractions and "noise" that prevent you from focusing on your big-picture activities * Implement the advanced features to streamline the most precious asset that you possess -- your time
One of the best part of the book focuses on how to manage your MITs [Most Important Tasks]. Steve’s suggestion is: Pick one to three MITs that absolutely must be completed by the end of the day. Two should relate to an urgent project with an immediate deadline, and one should be part of a long-term goal.
As we are shown, Todoist makes it super simple to identify your MITs. You can get started by reviewing your list of upcoming tasks in the morning. Then, identify the three that will have the biggest impact on your life and rank them, using the Priority feature in Todoist.
BUT, the real gold here, the section that I found to be the most valuable, is on PROJECTS. Here Steve Scott walks readers through the steps he uses to set up parent projects, actionable projects, and how to focus on “What’s the next action?”
The last section is about 23 Advanced Strategies to Maximize Your Todoist Experience. if you’d like to save time or make your life a little bit easier, then these 23 strategies can be invaluable. By reading this section, you will realize there are many interesting hacks you can use to maximize your Todoist experience.
So, what is the final word on TODOIST MASTERY? As wil all of Steve’s books, TODOIST MASTERY is a cut-to-the-chase, no-fluff book filled with actionable content, strategies and sage advice for simplifying your life with an app that is well worth the investment. I have personally been using this for the past six months and it is everything the author says it is. So check it out.
I was watching a podcast one day and the guy was prattling along and then he said something like he needed to add into his to do list, all the steps and stages that he needed to complete to self publish his book. I thought he’d stop filming and load all that in, but instead he pressed like three clicks and voila… the entire list was loaded in. WHAT APP WAS THAT? I demanded… it turned out to be todoist, not todolist. My bad. And then, like a lot of things, I forgot about it. Until I saw it mentioned by SJ Scott and then (timely) he had a new book on how to use todoist… reader I bought the book and the app. Well, installed it - There is a FREE option. I will mess about with it and see exactly how useful it is for me. Like a lot of things, you have to know how to use it and that’s what this book is for. I am a scatterbrained person - even if I’ve done something before - I worry that I will forget steps, or do them out of order… or whatever. I know if/when I’m organised things go better and I am less stressed. I like how simple it is - ‘tomorrow at 3’ is enough. ‘Every day at 6’ and it loads it every day… at 6! My god. This is how tech is supposed to be - helpful. Scott shows how to tie it into his habit stacking stuff, how to use advanced methods and synch it with everything from google calender to trello to your applewear using ifthisthenthat [ifttt.com] scripts. As always, he also has a companion website on teachable.com of extra information and graphics. 4 stars
This is an affordable, quick read to give users a starting point for setting up and operating a practical Todoist environment.
It starts with a walk through of the core features. As an existing user I moved through this pretty quickly. The projects, labels/filters, and review sections were more useful and I've updated my setup to take advantage of a number of these suggestions, which were compatible with how I was already operating.
This book was published nearly three years ago. While the UI and some of the features have moved forward in the intervening years the workflow/techniques suggested were quite sensible and still viable today. The biggest changes impacting the book were around which features are part of premium, and the sections feature which mustn't have been available back then.
Master Todoist is a 3rd party guide on how to use the to-do app Todoist technically and how it should be used to improve productivity/self-organization. I have used Todoist before some periods but haven't got the habit stuck.
The book is very quick read and technical parts were maybe even too detailed for mee (I know already where everything is). I got a few tips on how to organize tasks, what kind of tasks should I create, how to prioritize tasks and how to keep the task list organized.
If you are already a regular user of Todoist, this book will probably not be worth reading. I can recommend for anyone starting out or struggling with how to apply Todoist tools for productivity.
Great tips on how to use the app/website Todoist. I've been using Todoist for several weeks and I still learned some new things with regards to how to use Filters and other features. Also I learned some interesting ways to organize tasks, like by energy level.
I would add Alexa integration to this book, since that is one of the primary ways I use Todoist. It seems to cover every other integration, though.
Pretty good at explaining everything, and even offered some advanced tips. On the other hand, the one thing I kept thinking was this: Why not just make it a long blog post? Although I can't verify it, I'm almost certain I've read some Wait But Why posts that are longer than this.
All in all, I recommend it to someone looking for an introduction to Todoist, but you can probably find the same content for free online somewhere.
I decided to read this book to se do I really master Todoist. I have been using the app for years now and tried different methods to boost productivity. This book confirmed my hunch: I do master Todoist. No new things to learn, on the contrary, I don't want to label everything or concentrate on "big" tasks. Todoist is a lifesaver for me and this book is useful for those who are still starting to use it. A-okay book, but not for me this time.
The book is ok, it could be a lot smaller imo. It's needed to be said that author comprehensively touched every aspect of this tool. By reading this book, I'm now sure, that I know advanced techniques of Todoist which are helping me on a daily basis. What's most important - the reason every person could reach for this book is to gain effectiveness in getting things done and I feel this book helps in that.
I’ve been a diehard fan of the 2Do app for managing my to do lists. This year I need a change so I switched to Todoist. All the different features intimidated me so I bought this book to familiarize myself.
The book provides a decent, solid foundation of information presented in an organized, logical fashion. That’s pretty much what I wanted. I think I’ll still watch some YouTube tutorials to supplement this book, too.
This book is 122 pages. Contain a lot of the things that can be found online and on the todoist website. I was hoping that this book could somehow explain the workflow of todoist. But nope, it was just like a tutorial book. The app screenshot were made in 2018 so.... it's outdated. Most importantly, you could just open the todoist website and there is everything you need explained there. I would not suggest anyone buying this book.
Simple and straightforward. It helped me implement many decisions and habits I've been developing. But seems to be also helpful to learn and start with some of those. It closely follows the "Getting Things Done" model. I've made my project and daily planning more efficient, so I could use space and time of my journaling sessions to write and reflect more. Thank you!
Excellent intro to Todoist with practical suggestions
I enjoyed the book's laid-back tone with a little bit of stern reality thrown in. I have an excellent idea of how to use Todoist with some practical examples to start me off. These suggestions may or may not work for me but as the author says, I'm committing to using Todoist and embracing what I learn as I build the habit.
As a long term todoist user I can not say I got much new information or specific ways to use it as an overall system to set and achieve goals. But maybe I was just expecting too much. Great read for those new to the system, and I wholeheartedly support the authors endorsement of using todoist to organise your entire life. It's awesome.
I learned so much from this book even though I am a Grand Master at todoist. I hadn't used labels or filters and I hadn't linked with other applications so was doubling up on some tasks or relying on multiple products to organise my life. I do find Google Keep useful as well which is one product not mentioned in the book.
Excellent tutorial to get my behind in gear to start using this app to increase my productivity and overall planning & awareness of what I want of in life.
I'm a big SJ Scott fan. His topics inspire me in an area that doesn't come naturally to me. I already feel like this book is changing my life for the better.
I have used ToDoist for a bit know, so, I knew quite a bit of information already. However, I found lots of small nuggets. Most useful to me was the template for projects done often. Love the tips that helped to remove other apps and use just a core group.
Very basic book with limited helpfulness. Not much here you can't pick up for free on YouTube, a simple Google search, or just using Todoist. LOTS of times the book says "Here is the link to the IFTTT recipe" and there is NO link at all. This happens over and over. Not at all useful to tell me there is link to the thing I might want to do and then not actually give me the link.
Not too long and not too short. This book has really helped me get my life in order and start doing the things I care about. You will get everything you need to Master Todoist. Enjoy!
Steve's book does a very good job explaining an easy to follow workflow for getting the most out of Todoist along with some great advice for utilizing third party applications to make our even more powerful.
This book is good for those who have never used the app before. As an advanced user, I still enjoyed the book because I learned a few things that I will incorporate now. I do think it's helpful if the reader is familiar with planning in general.
Simple intro into GTD using APP Todoist with some great examples how to organize, label and automate your (daily) tasks and projects. If you have no clue what GTD is, it's good read.
A good overview of ToDoist that changed the way I used the app in several ways. A quick and worthwhile read for anyone who uses ToDoist or plans to do so.
This brief, clear, fun book made a Todoist addict of me. Todoist is the most amazing organizing app I've ever encountered. While simple on the outside and easy to get started with, it contains many powerful "hooks" for organizing tasks and projects by date, priority, projects, labels and filters. This book was just the kick-start I needed to immediately begin using its many features.
Great, short book to get you started with Todoist. The book gives you plenty of ideas on how to best use this tool to get control of your to do list. If you are looking for a jumpstart with this app, the book should be very helpful, but don't expect an in-depth review of the app.
