Southern Billionaires #1

The Trouble with Billionaires

Rate this book
She's sworn to never fall for another rich man.
He's determined to change her mind.

Charlotte Mabry moves to a small town in Alabama, full of plans for a better life, especially for her son Taylor. Cash is short, but at least she's free from the crushing heartbreak of being married to a man who only cared about money. So even though Nate Haverton sends her pulses racing from the moment they meet, she refuses to let her heart lead her back into misery. Because he might be her son's t-ball coach, but he's also a billionaire.

Nate's drive and genius for solving problems have made him insanely wealthy, but not happy. With no time for a committed relationship, he tries to fill the emptiness inside by giving back to his home town. But then Charlotte moves in, and he knows that all this time he's been waiting for someone like her. She's beautiful, sweet, and strong...but adamant about keeping him at arms length.

When his good intentions go wrong and rumors fly in their small southern town, this may be one problem he can't solve—even though it's the one that matters most.

This is a sweet romance.

Ummmm, yumma yumma.

This book is good enough to eat. It sure hit my sweet spot for -take me away, butterfly inducing, humming attraction- romance. All while keeping it sweet and clean. Charlotte (and the whole town, really) have a healthy attraction to Nate and well, let's just say it came across loud and clear. Ahem.

Nate is a force to be sure. He's smart and resourceful and a tad bit pushy. Yes, he's loaded but he is always helping people with his time and his money. I loved his attention to Charlotte, his persistence. Charlotte is wary but not spiteful. She is kind and respectful to people and I loved that about her.

This book was such a fun, fluffy diversion and I just loved it. I was smiling pretty much the whole way through and my heart was letting out little romantic sighs. Michelle Pennington knocked it out of the park for me with this one. I can't wait to see what comes next!

Content: kissing, some lusty attraction

After inheriting her grandmother's house, Charlotte Mabry and her son, Taylor, move to a small town in Alabama for a fresh start. Ever since her ex-husband learned of their move, he has stopped paying child support. Money will definitely be tight until she can get her salon up and running. But she wants to give Taylor the best life she can without spoiling him and making him think that money is the most important thing in life. She wants him to live life, be happy and be proud of what hard work can accomplish.

Nate Haverton doesn't come from money. He has put a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears to get him to where he is in the business world. Now he uses his money for good... to help others around him who are less fortunate. He knows what it's like to live paycheck to paycheck and if he can alleviate pressure for the people in his home town, he's more than willing to do it. He may go about it the wrong way at times but his heart really is in the right place.

To say Charlotte and Nate got off on the wrong foot would be an understatement. Neither one knew where the other was coming from that day in the sporting goods store. And neither of them can deny the spark between them from that first meeting. But she's sworn off rich men and he's too busy for a relationship.

Never underestimate the power of fate. What's meant to be, will be no matter how much someone fights against it. When Nate's good intentions go awry, he'll have to do everything in his power to fix the mess he's created. He's waited his whole life for someone like Charlotte and he's not about to lose her over his money. Will Nate be able to help her see that everything he has done has been out of love? Will Charlotte be able to let go of her prejudices in order to get the HEA they all deserve?

So... after reading the third book in this series and seeing Charlotte, Nate and Taylor in it, I thought I would go back and read their story. I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed seeing Charlotte and Nate's relationship develop. I also enjoyed Nate develop a relationship with Taylor. He definitely needed someone like Nate in his life since his father was pretty much a jerk. I didn't care for him at all.

I'm finding that I love the small town settings. There's just something about the friendships, the protectiveness, and just the feel of it all. I can picture the diners and other shops and it makes me want to go visit. Of course in a perfect world all the evil people wouldn't be there. But I guess there's no escaping them. Haha.

I'm definitely adding more books by Ms. Pennington to my TBR list. I've really enjoyed all of them I have read so far. :)

And of course we can't forget my casting. I'm really liking these two. What do you think?

This was a nice and sweet, clean and safe read. The H wasn't a man about town, which I appreciated. He was just a really decent and nice guy who was basically the only reason I would recommend this book to anyone. The h wasn't a doormat, but she was just so hung up on her preconceived notions about wealthy people. It was annoying.

The writing itself was easy to read and engaging. I'm going to dig into this author's backlist and see if there's anything else that interests me. Exciting times! :)

Having read a number of “billionaire romances” I was a little hesitant to take on another. After all, there are not all that many actual young, eligible billionaires out there and all too many authors try to create billionaires out of people whose professions simply cannot produce such wealth. I prefer some degree of believability from an author before I can really get caught up in the story. How delighted I was to discover that this offering from Michelle Pennington did exactly that – She got my attention almost immediately and kept me involved all the way through. Charlotte’s significant issues involving men with money resonated with me and set her apart from the norm. Nate is an ideal hero who fits the billionaire role and really tries to make things better for those around him. The journey from when Charlotte and Nate first meet to their HEA is a fun and delightful reading experience. The manner in which the author executes Charlotte’s change of heart really put things over the top for me and moved the offering from four to five stars. On the other hand, I found it interesting that her team of 16 “incredible Beta Readers, Editors, and Proof Readers” allowed a few errors to slip by them. Just one example: “You mind is always somewhere besides business.” At the same time, they can take solace in knowing that very few E-books I have read had so few errors.

Another book that kept me up way too late. I started The Trouble with Billionaires as I got into bed at 9 pm last night. And finished it after midnight when I finally turned out the light. 2018 has started out as a great year as far as reading, but as far as sleep it's not going so well.

This is a great story I highly recommend to those who enjoy clean romance. This is the first book I have read by Michelle Pennington but it won't be the last. A great small town setting with likable characters and a fun story-line... This book was definitely a good fit for me.

Rating: 4.5 Stars - Highly recommend to those who love clean romance

4 Stars!

I’d forgotten how much I really like this author! I’d read the second book in this series almost a year ago, and didn’t realize it was part of a series at first. I really enjoyed that one, and was glad to see this one and others also available. The romance was swoony but clean, the dialogue (especially between some of those southern ladies!) was hilarious, and there was a great HEA ending, all of which I love. I liked how much Charlotte DIDN’T want to be with Nate because of his wealth, and how down to earth Nate really was. Can’t wait to read more- think I’m gonna have to re-read the second one in the series now!

This was a fun easy read. I really needed something light and fluffy and this worked. It is a Novella length. The leading man was a little bossy and the woman a little silly but overall it worked and I enjoyed it. Clean simple read:} So good kisses.

So fun! I have really enjoyed all the books I have read by Michelle Pennington. I especially like this one because both of the main characters are looking for happiness through means besides money. They had learned that money doesn't buy happiness and they are looking for what does. Their interactions often made me laugh out loud. I loved some of the side characters almost as much as the main characters. This is a new series about southern billionaires. I saw at least two characters that I think could have their own story and I would love to learn more about them. Looking forward to more books in this series!

3.5...this was a light, enjoyable read...but it was insta-love, so not my favorite type of romance (because insta-love lacks tension IMO). But it was a quick escape, just what I’ve been looking for.

Cute, fun, clean read. Charlotte moves to a small town in Alabama with her son. I loved the community. And the cast of quirky characters from neighbors to the moms at little league! Nate is a down to earth, good guy. And his relationship with Charlotte's son is a close second to his relationship with Charlotte. Really fun with great southern charm!

Okay, this is the first book in this genre and from Ms. Pennington.
It was hysterical! I laughed and laughed. There were a couple of places that got really serious but the overall tone of the story was quirky and cute. It was funny and completely unrealistic! A nice change from the depression and other serious issues surrounding our current world. A good reprive!

This was really good. Charlotte moves to a small town in Alabama after her divorce from a professional baseball player. The house she and her son love in was inherited from her grandmother. She's hoping to open her own beauty salon once she gets settled. Nate is a billionaire Charlotte meets while purchasing cleats for her son. They get off on the wrong foot when he criticizes her choices. Unfortunate because he turns out to be her son's coach as well. The two of them do make up and before long both are finding excuses to spend more time together. But Charlotte has a difficult time accepting the fact Nate is an extremely wealthy man. Her ex was all about money, the more he got, the more he wanted, and oftentimes came before his family. It's up to Nate to prove he's nothing like her ex and that he loves both Charlotte and her son.

Loved the characters in this one and the way they worked out their differences. This is the second book I've read by this author and I really like her style. Looking forward to the next one.

ETA--listened to the audiobook again, this time with my hubby. He loved it too!

WHAT IT'S ABOUT
She's sworn to never fall for another rich man.

When his good intentions go wrong and rumors fly in their small southern town, this may be one problem he can't solve—even though it's the one that matters most.

MY TAKE
I loved this book so much. Pennington does such a great job making the characters interesting and fun. Oh, my heck. Those people in that town! I've lived in small towns before, and she was dead on with them. Lovable and irritating all at the same time.

Charlotte is so cute with her drive to be independent without her worthless ex husband. And Nate's so used to just stepping in and helping people. Usually they're glad for it, but he's intrigued at Charlotte's insistence that she can do it herself, thank you very much. That last thing she needs is a useless rich guy throwing his money around.

But Nate's NOT like her ex at all.

There are a couple of scenes. One just broke my heart for her son Taylor. What a jerk his father his. There's another that made me burst out laughing. This was just the story I needed. <3

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was fabulous!

Reviewed at Romance Is Ageless

I had such a good time reading The Trouble With Billionaires. It’s fun, flirty, full of Southern charm and sass as only Southern women can deliver. It’s what would be considered a clean and sweet romance with only intense kisses and feelings voiced, but don’t let that trick you into thinking there aren’t plenty of steamy glances and imaginings going on. While I love any type of Romance, I don’t always need the intimate details – I have a pretty good imagination. *grin*

Nate is such a cool guy. Yes, he’s a billionaire but he hasn’t lost his down home roots. He came from poverty, and while he may have tons of toys and acquisitions now he hasn’t forgotten what it was like to struggle to get by. He gives back without a fuss, simply something he almost instinctively does. To his small home town, to the residents, to those in need and to some special new members of the community, Charlotte and her son Taylor.

Charlotte knows firsthand what it’s like to live among the rich and the lavish lifestyle that often seems to matter more than the people within those glittering lifestyles. Newly divorced, she and her son have moved to a small town where she’s inherited her grandmother’s home. She’s set to rebuild their lives far away from people who believe that money is everything and that anything or anyone can be purchased with dollar signs. She and Nate start off on the wrong foot – and it’s delightful mayhem from that moment on.

I liked this couple very much. Yes, there were issues to be dealt with, and not being one of the rich and famous myself I don’t know how truly realistic their story was… but it felt entirely believable and complex to me. It’s kind of impossible to not fall a bit in love with Nate, his heart is in the right place even when he makes missteps along the way. Charlotte is complicated and yet easy to understand in her bid for freedom and to live her life in the way that works best for herself and her son.

As I said, I had such fun with this story – and I’m definitely going to look for The Truth About Billionaires when it releases. I have no hesitation in recommending The Trouble With Billionaires to any Romance reader no matter if you like your stories sweet and clean, or hot and steamy… you’ll find yourself enjoying this Romance on every level. And remember, imagination is a good thing.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

I actually listened to this one but that version was not available here in Goodreads.
Anyways, in this story, we meet Charlotte who is a newly divorced lady who moves into her grandmother's home in a little town in the south. She has a 6-year-old son with a well-known Baseball player. The son wanted to play T ball so as they prepare for the season she brings the son to the store to get some shoes. But funds are low and so she decided to get the cheapest shoes they got. In comes Nate, who is a stranger at that time, and suggests she gest the $60 dollar pair instead so it will last the whole season. This rubs Charlotte wrong and so the first impression for both of them was not good.
A few days later she discovers Nate to be the T Ball coach and so they have to start over and got close then. Feelings ensue but Charlotte is wary of rich guys that flaunt their money. Nate, on the other hand, feels like since he is filthy rich that he has the "opportunity" and responsibility to help others, even if they are as prideful as Charlotte.
So what I liked:
I thought that setting was good. I liked the secondary characters that we meet in this small town.
I also liked the narration. She did a good job to change her voice and even inflect some accents to it so you can have a good sense of the location of the little town.
I liked Nate. He is a good man. He has a good balance of humility and also knowing when to use his riches for the benefit of others. Although, I'm not sure that I can buy the idea of a billionaire coaching T Ball cause they had the opportunity to do so. I feel like that's not really realistic. If you are a billionaire, you either won't have the time to do so or use your "free time" to help in a different way. But that's just me.

What I didn't quite like:
I didn't like Charlotte. She was so prideful. I agree with Nate when he said (about 75% into the book) about how Charlotte was the one that focused more on the money part. Because she did. She didn't want Nate to help her and yet at the end, she was still accepting his help. I just thought she was childish in the way she handled her challenges.

Overall I thought the storyline had some good meat in it. It wasn't just totally all about the "fluff".

Sweet clean romance about Charlotte who is a single mom who has just moved into a small town in Alabama following her divorce from her major league baseball ex. Since the Ex isn't great about paying child support, especially until the wage garnishment kicks in when the season starts, the free house Charlotte has just inherited from her grandmother is just what she needs.

Nate Haverton is the hometown boy who made it big in business but came back home to buy his parents a better home and reinvest in his hometown, including coaching TBall. He's the most eligible bachelor in town (thanks to his kind demeanor, great physique, and all that money) but he's instantly attracted to Charlotte. Unfortunately for Nate, Charlotte has a no-more-rich-guys policy.

They get off on the wrong foot and Nate keeps getting further in the hole, despite his good intentions. Nate isn't the kind of guy who gives up though, so he works to woo Charlotte and she fights with herself because she's seriously attracted to him (and her son loves him), but she really doesn't want all that comes with his money.

Sweet story, good chemistry, and a Happy Ever After.

This book was recommended to me by another clean romance author whom I enjoy, so I took the opportunity to receive an advanced review copy for review. Overall, the story was an enjoyable one. I liked Nate's consistency and his lack of aires despite his financial status.

I enjoyed the characters and dialogue, but somehow didn't quite connect with the storyline as much as I'd hoped I would. If I were to try to pinpoint what caused the disconnect, I think perhaps it was the limited backstory, especially for Nate. Yet it's crucial to understanding why he is the way he is. We learn a bit about his childhood, but not how he came to make his wealth. It's just magically there.

That aside, the story was fun. I did read it in one sitting easily enough and would gladly read other books by this author.

(As a final note, there was one particular place where the timeline didn't make sense and a few editorial issues, but I'm assuming those were corrected by the time the final version was published.)

After moving into her grandmother’s house she inherited, Charlotte tries to settle in and open up her beauty salon as well as make a better life for her son Taylor. When Nate enters the picture, all handsome and very unfortunately extremely rich, Charlotte has to battle her prejudices and fears while her emotions are all over the place…
It was a change to read about a billionaire who gives money out of the goodness of his heart and see all the problems he creates along the way as he tries to make life easier and better for the people he loves. The plot was at times really amusing, especially when Charlotte had her childish outbursts. However, the stubborn pride and prejudices she showed Nate made me think twice where I might show similar reactions towards people who want to help me. I often have a hard time to accept help and, well, there is nothing better than a story with a few extremes to show someone how obtuse one can be ☺. Enjoy this book as Charlotte faces her fears and has to reevaluate her opinion on rich people.

Charlotte Mabry & Nate Haverton

I liked this overall. Single mom Charlotte moves to a small town where she inherited her grandma's property. She's struggling because her ex isn't paying child support.

She meets Nate, who makes assumptions at first about her based on her high-priced accessories, but he soon realizes she really struggling.

Nate the billionaire is attracted to her, but she sworn off rich men. He does everything he can to show her he's not like her ex.

Please tell me how many times a woman can say I am swearing off rich men? I would have understood this better if she'd said she was swearing off men who treat her like shit.

Then we had to constantly hear her repeat it while at the same time she was going along with what he was putting out. Not to say that I didn't understand her hangups, but this seems like first world problems to me.

Also, why didn't she sale some of the high dollar items she owned to get some of the things they needed. That's what I would have done to make ends meet. Maybe that's just me.

The Trouble with Billionaires by Michelle Pennington delivers a charming burst of clean romance that’s full of heart and refreshingly free of spice. The chemistry between the leads is gentle and endearing, making it a pleasant read for fans of wholesome love stories.

However, the narrative stumbles when it rushes toward a marriage proposal after just a handful of kisses and a very short acquaintance. While the emotional connection is sweet, the leap to lifelong commitment feels impractical and unrealistic. It’s always a bit disheartening when authors feel compelled to wrap up a romance with a wedding bow, especially when the relationship hasn’t had time to breathe.

Still, if you’re looking for a light, feel-good escape with minimal drama, this one might hit the spot

A modern romance, humor, stress and romance. The author brought out vulnerabilities most can relate to but hope to harbor.

Charlotte swept off her feet by the athlete with his casanova ways married, baby, career and drive to be the richest and never enough. That mentality drives a wedge what is more important family or money n social status.little town coach Nate catches her she and he really wants her. The big wedge is he is a billionaire n she hates rich boys...divorced single mom. It has humor, greed, stress, and romance great story and real life drama. Violence o, sex 1

Okay, Interesting

I enjoy reading books in series or a trilogy and I chose this series because I thought I would like the storyline. Well I was right. I enjoyed the story and not trying to give out SPOILERS; what I thought was funny was when the leading lady started behaving childishly, I was saying she's very childish, and the leading man told her the same thing.

The story was entertaining and kept interested in the series which I'm about to read the next book now. If you are looking for HOT, STEAMY love scenes this is not the book for you.

Charlotte had one rich husband, now an ex, and back payments of alimony are needed. Her son Taylor is a natural, just needs practice his coach says. In buying shoes she’s looking for a bargain, when he comes and tell her the expensive will last. The ones she is going to buy won’t last two months,
Her temper gets the best of her, and this was only the start, of how he wants to help her. Until she has a contract written up, by his lawyer of what he can and can’t do. A fun story to read, and wonder will things ever change. Doesn’t seem like it when she finds out he too has money.

I liked the story a lot. Nate is a great guy. He has a lot of money, but it really doesn't mean that much to him except as a way to help others. Charlotte is a nice woman, but lets her pride get in the way of accepting help from anyone. She has a hard time trusting anyone who is rich because of how her rich ex-husband and his friends act. Thankfully she comes to her senses in time. Lots of funny parts and several weird women who are deluded enough to think they have a relationship with Nate, despite his not paying any attention to them.

I would recommend this book.

I enjoyed this story. The author has it moving along smoothly, making it believable. I liked the main characters. Charlotte was a good mother, putting her son's needs above hers even when it was something she wasn't very good at it even liked that much. Kate never gave up, just putting everything to rights and giving her time to get past her fears. Yes, I recommend this book. I've even bought the two remaining books in this series.

Did not like the female lead

I get she was hurt in the past, really I do, but she was so over the top in her refusal of everything. Quite frankly, he deserves better. I would have preferred to see him with Justine, at least you got the feeling she really loved him. I literally liked every other character more than I liked the Female lead. Can’t for the life of me understand why he liked her, other than she was beautiful.

So after reading Michelle Pennington's witty and hilarious Shaped by Love series, The Trouble with Billionaires fell a little flat in my readers mind. That being said, it was a good, clean, romantic story with a happily ever after, and those looking for a sweet story will enjoy reading Charlotte and Nate's romance and how they work out their relationship with Charlotte's son, Taylor. It is part of a series and sets the stage for book two which I am already reading.
