The second volume in the Hellraiser: Anthology series features stories written by returning Hellraiser comic scribes Ben Meares, Christian Francis, Mark Alan Miller, David McKendry, Rebekah McKendry and Matt Murray, as well as newcomers to the series Zac Thompson & Lonnie Nadler (The Dregs) and Ken Winkler. Artists include returning Hellraiser alumni Daniele Serra (who provides the cover along with a six-page story), Riley Schmitz, Jim Terry and Nick Percival, along with newcomers to the series Mark Torres (Judge Dredd), Hector Casanova (The Lurkers), Christian DiBari (Magdalena), Simon Gough (GI Joe: Snake Eyes), Devmalya Pramanik (Nightbreed) and Nino Cammarata (The Black Cat).
Additionally, the graphic novel will feature a prose story detailing the origin of the fan-favorite Cenobite the Chatterer, written by the Chatterer himself, Nicholas Vince. The tale will feature pen and ink illustrations by Clive Barker.
Occupational Hazard: Who does the clean-up after the Cenobites? This is a fun tale by Bem Meares. Not sure I like the idea of the dumpster as canon, but I'm happy to accept the story as an enjoyable 'what if?' episode.
Nameless: A poem by Christian Francis.
Quietus: This captured the desire to open the box superbly. A dark tale of abuse by Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler. I really enjoyed the artwork by Christian DiBari.
Beguiled: Conveys the desire for perfection really well. Bloody love the Riley Schmitz artwork.
The Test: I loved the idea of a chimp being given the box to try and solve. (no I don't condone animal cruelty). I loved how this tale ended but I wasn't endmoured with Pinhead's appearance. I'm not sure it was needed, it felt overexplained.
The Ancient One: A poem by Christian Francis and Ben Meares.
Prayers Of Desire by Nicholas Vince is a really enjoyable short story. A Chatterer origin story featuring pedophilia, sexual awakenings, sex, lust and love.
"It's Pin-Occhio's Birthday' by Ben Meares and Christian Francis. I adore this story. It's one of the few occasions I'm happy to accept the Cenobites outside of their original Barker design. Cenobites with party hats work here 😆 in this gorgeous fairy tale. The artwork by Riley Schmitz is again wonderful. I really would love a signed Pin-occhio sketch.
For Each Little Hurt: A poem by Ken Winkler.
Collect 'Em All by Matt. Murray is so good. Daryl Dooley wants to be a Kyubumon Master. There's one card that could help him realise his dream. The Riley Schmitz dismemberment panels are GORGEOUS.
Hallowed Be Thy Shame by Ken Winkler is a stunning two panel tale of sexual desire. It goes without saying the Riley Schmitz artwork is superb.
Octagon by David Ian McKendry & Rebekah McKendry is an enjoyable tale set in the world of illegal underground fighting.
Like Shipping by the talented Riley Schmitz is a shirt but sweet tale about what happens to the box at the end of the day.
Confession is an excellent tale about lust, murder, necrophilia, cannibalism, guilt and the box. Superb artwork by Daniele Serra elevates the story further.
Like Whispers: A follow-up to 'Like Shipping'. Cone on Riley Schmitz, you can't leave me hanging like that. 😆
The Next Town is a decent tale featuring a travelling circus and gorgeous art by Devmalya Pramanik. Not the strongest of stories but I like the final panel shows the circus moving onto the next town and so ending the book.
3.5 stars rounded up. Interesting stories, but I wish they had been longer and more developed. I bought this from Nicholas Vince at a horror convention (pre-COVID), and his story was the best in the book. Plus, he drew me a picture of the Chatterer next to his autograph, which made my day.
