This book was exactly what I needed. I don’t believe in luck; I believe that God sent me this book to read for my spirit. My spirit had been down so long and needed a comeback.
Pastor Rick McDaniel has a message for each one of us. Everyone has needed a comeback from something(s) at times in their life. It can be a huge hole you need to climb out of or a relationship you need to mend, or a financial setback. Pastor McDaniel reveals principals in his book that will help you run past your setback into “an incredible comeback.” McDaniel uses real life people to illustrate points of what he is trying to get across to us.
The first principal is believing you can comeback from a situation. Fear should be replaced with faith; it is the opposite of fear. Know that a failure in your life is not final. You can use your faith to get the fear out of your way to plan a successful comeback.
God has a plan for your life. If you ignore God’s voice, instruction, or the Word, things in your will become miserable and difficult. You then are off the path God has for you to take. Look for experiences that you can learn from. God teaches you how to do new things all the time. Learn from them and use them for your comeback.
Physical activity is important to God and to you. Learn to accept living within our income and not in debt; “learn to live within your means.” Changing the usual way, you think is required for a comeback. Go from useless to useful to everyone. And do not allow yourself to revert back to your old ways; that is too easy. Stretch yourself. Be committed to your change.
A forward focus is the third principal. Do not think about your setbacks, but focus on your comeback that is forthcoming. If someone says that it “can’t be done,” that is setting yourself up to fail by killing your effort. Pastor McDaniel said, “The Bible says what is impossible with man is possible with God (Matthew 19:26).” We should live this mindset daily.
Begin to dream again. Setbacks cannot rule your life unless you let them. Pick relationships that do not bring you down. Instead, work to please God, not people. God already loves you; people have to judge if they even like you or not. Talk to Him. Tell Him what you need. If that need is what God thinks you do need, you will receive it.
Disappointment will try to creep in again and again. “Understand life isn’t fair.” Exercise toughness in your thinking. Do not go down with those bad times. Everyone needs a copy of this little book and to practice using Pastor Rick McDaniel principals of setback comebacks.

Solid Insights about Overcoming Life’s Challenges

Pastor Rick McDaniel combines stories with Biblical teaching for the pages of TURN YOUR SETBACKS INTO COMEBACKS. The book is contains excellent teaching and covers five different types of comebacks: relational, financial, career, health and spiritual.

As McDaniel explains, “Change is Required. Are you ready for a comeback? Are you ready to move out of the setback and into the comeback? The comeback hinges on one word: change.” (Page 34) Then later McDaniel’s gives a simple formula for change: “Momentum is mysterious, but I’ve tried to show how concrete change + positive experiences + clear direction = momentum. Momentum is your best friend when you are making a comeback. Nobody has ever had a comeback without it.” (Page 49)

Every reader will discover great encouragement and practical information in this book. I highly recommend TURN YOUR SETBACKS INTO COMEBACKS.

This is a Christian-based book on what to do when it seems like something in your life is failing. It's certainly not for everyone, but as I was reading, different people who needed to read different sections kept popping into my head.

What I really enjoyed is that McDaniel really gets into the psychology behind everything he says. He doesn't simply say 'The Bible says...' He goes on to explain why it works and what to expect. In adopting this attitude, he holds the reader accountable and forces them to begin thinking.

Where the book took a wrong turn for me is that it seems to be geared more towards men. Most of the examples given are sports related. Most of the stories surround men. This isn't a bad thing, really. There's plenty of good information for men and women alike. I just wish that there had been more that I could personally relate to when it came to these portions of the book.

I think every Christian will get something out of this book. Truly, I believe everyone can gain a better understanding of who they are and how they relate to the world around them. I also realize that most non-Christians will find what they're looking for is lost among the faith fields. This would also be an incredible study book for any church group.

Turn Your Setbacks Into Comebacks by Rick McDaniel is a relatively short (151 pages) book about learning from bad times and events, in order to move into a more fulfilling or productive time.

Written in a format akin to a very long series of mini pep talks, Rick guides the reader through basic truths about setback, comebacks, and the lessons that can be learned in both seasons. He then steps into the boundaries of more specific categories of setbacks, such as relationships, finances, careers, health, and spirituality. For each of these categories, he lists common issues, stories of people who have made it through similar trials, and tips for those who are seeking like changes.

Overall, this is a very basic and simple book that would be a good starting place for someone trying to move past difficult times, who just needs a reminder that things can look up if you pursue change long enough. That being said, I would not recommend this book to anyone who has been struggling long-term with very harsh setbacks and common side effects such as severe depression or melancholy attitudes. In those case, these mini pep talks may leave you feeling even more down due to the nature of Rick's methods, where he give lots of examples but very little new practical advice. For instance, in a financial setback - telling someone to manage money better and learn to be satisfied and spend wisely is sound (albeit common) advice. However, this is not going to be comforting (or even very useful) to someone who has been laid off, is struggling to find another job, and finds themselves unable to pay rent, thus no longer having a roof for their family. In extreme cases, this common sense advice may just make the reader feel like even more of a failure rather than giving them hope for a better outcome. 3/5 stars.

Turn Your Setbacks Into Comebacks is a book of strategies for starting fresh after a setback. The author discusses several types of comebacks that include:

• Financial Comebacks
• Relational Comebacks
• Career Comebacks
• Health Comebacks
• Spiritual Comebacks

There are also chapters that address reasons and lessons for setbacks, as well as the different components to comebacks.

Since the author has written this book from a Christian perspective, and he’s the founder and Senior Pastor of the Richmond Community Church in VA, the book leans heavily on God, the Bible and spiritual matters. However, I would not call this book “preachy”.

The author did a wonderful job of including plenty of real life stories to make his point. I found guidance and strength from the author’s words. There were several times when the writing spoke directly to me and I found value in this.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to move past a setback in order to experience the comeback they’ve prayed for. Thanks to the author, the publisher and Book Crash for providing a complimentary copy.

This encouraging book is a fast read filled with examples of down-and-out folks who succeeded in turning their setbacks into comebacks because they did not cling to their past failures. No matter the setbacks, they found hope through their own strength or from their friends or teammates who refused to let them grovel in their past until they were paralyzed by defeat of their own making. Underlying the many examples of people in distress are encouraging scriptures that buoyed the sinking spirits until they got back on terra firma.
I was given this book to read in exchange for my review. Because the title caught my fancy, I wanted to read it. I am glad I did because as I read, several of my troubled acquaintances came to mind. I feel in my heart they would be helped out of the pit they are floundering in if they would read this book. Now I must decide which one needs it most.
