Replenished: Short Story Version

Rate this book
Replenished is the tale of a middle-aged man who, after his girlfriend walks out on him, tries to lick his wounds by purchasing his dream car: a ’55 Buick Roadmaster. It isn’t long before he realizes that the Roadmaster has the bizarre ability to replenish itself; every time the fuel needle drops below E, he watches in amazement as it slowly returns to F. But the car does more than just replenish gasoline. After driving in it for months, he realizes that his health problems have vanished, and the relationship with his estranged son heals and mends whenever they go for a drive together. Desperate to get his girlfriend back, and knowing she won’t go willingly, he formulates a plan to get her in the car and onto the open road—a plan that goes terribly wrong. A tale of jealousy, rage, and human frailty, this is a drive along the dark highways of the human heart. Buckle up.

A very enjoyable quick short story that had been recommended to me through Goodreads.

This effective story of a car that has the ability to aid he’s owner has a slight Christine meets Twilight Zone vibe to it.
When both the car and it’s owner is at its lowest/empty the Roadmaster is able to to replenish and improve our first person narrator’s situation.
But how bad will he let the situation get to try and reap a rewarding full tank?

Short but impactful, I’d highly recommended it too!

An elderly guy buys a 55' Buick Roadmaster after his wife Cheryl moved out. This car is something very special. The relationsship to his son gets better and everytime the fuel gauge is on empty it goes back to full. The car is 'replenishing' things. He tries to use this on his ex-wife but when he kidnaps her the situation escalates. Police chases and stops him and he's sentenced for murdering an officer. Death Row is waiting. Is death really the end here? If you love stories like Stephen Kings 'Christine' or 'From a Buick 8' you should have a closer look at this story. I love strange and posessed cars with a shady past. Also the description of its previous owner is quite eerie. This tale has a nasty twist. Really recommended!

A bit better car story than Stephen King's CHRISTINE, for one thing it's shorter. I enjoyed the story but had no sympathy for the protagonist - an idiot and quite mad as well.

I downloaded this short story via Kindle Unlimited.

We open by learning that Charlie has been convicted of murder. He blames his car, and we learn why…

No one believes him—not his family, not his friends, not his attorneys, or even his fellow prison inmates.

Charlie’s girlfriend, Cheryl, left him for a younger man when she and Charlie couldn’t conceive together.

Charlie buys a car off of a buddy named Douglas Pratt. Doug is overjoyed to get rid of the car, which seems odd at the time. But it’s a beauty: a 1955 cherry red Buick Roadmaster.

Charlie’s suspicions first arise when he realizes the vehicle never runs out of gas. It will literally hit E, then move all the way back to F.

And the Buick has some sort of healing powers. Charlie had needed an minor hernia operation prior to the purchase; afterwards, the procedure is no longer medically necessary.

It even mends his relationship with his son, from whom he’s been somewhat estranged.

So of course Charlie figures this is just the thing to mend his broken relationship with Cheryl. He takes her for a drive, but that does not go exactly as planned.

Cool surprise ending.

“Because maybe there are some things in this world that are not meant to be replenished. Perhaps age and rust possess their own beauty.”
