Future Terrors

Rate this book
It’s Randall’s turn to visit a land created by his dreams and nightmares.

On New Year’s Eve, 2019, Randall Stratton and his sister Mari and three other friends accidentally opened a portal into another dimension. Strange triangular marks were branded onto their forearms.

They now know they’re all doomed to visit their own personal landscapes—alternate worlds built by their sweetest dreams and worst nightmares. This time, all five of them must live through the manifested fears of Randall’s wild, futuristic landscape.

Not only do they have to make it back to the Mainworld, but they have to avoid being captured and exploited by ruthless black-cloaked Shifters—who always seem to be one step ahead of them.

This novel is the fourth of a five-part series, with each book written from the viewpoint of one of the five main characters as the story progresses: Mari, Tony, Lauren, Randall, and Stefanie.

Body-swapping and genies and portals--oh my! I'm a writer of clean-read Young Adult fiction who lives in northern California, USA. My sci-fi debut, THE BODY INSTITUTE, explores themes of body image and identity. Its sequel, SPARES, completes the tale.

I have a Studio Arts degree and a dragon collection. I love reading--mostly young adult novels--as well as embroidering, drawing, and enjoying all kinds of music and dance.

Randall Stratton was on edge while he waited for his friends to join his sister Mari and himself. They knew with the full moon the portal would open and take them – they just didn’t know when it would occur. The feeling they had to act on immediately came to them while they were in school – the jumbled heap they landed in was the beginning of another dreaded adventure; this time Randall’s nightmare landscape.

Tex-C was the first one they encountered – but could they trust him? They needed to avoid the Shifters at all costs but there was more danger than usual on this visit. They had to stay together as the portal wouldn’t reactivate without all five of them in the one place. Death, destruction and injury – would they make it back to Mainworld in one piece?

Future Terrors is the 4th in the Junction 2020 series by Carol Riggs and we have one to go – Stephanie’s landscape will be the final installment. I’m looking forward to that one very much. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being swept along in the author’s imagination – and boy, she sure has that! A great series with likeable characters, plenty of activity and a blistering pace. Highly recommended.

With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

I had a blast writing this book! I really got to use my imagination for Randall's sci-fi world, and enjoyed making the twists and turns that I hope readers will enjoy. Join Randall as he navigates a whole new galaxy of AI droids, strange planets, creepy aliens, Shifters, wondrous dreams, and horrible dangers.

I am not into sci fi or space but Randall’s landscape was so thrilling and adventurous! I really enjoyed seeing his character develop and I loved seeing his softer side. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t risk their lives for the dreaming parts of their minds though. It seems a small sacrifice to pay to help others (and themselves) get out of those nightmares! Plus I’m a sucker for a redemption arc so I’m really hoping we get some closure with Sanjen! I am so curious to know more about his family and his story. Zander and Corbin can rot in EN-191! Anyways, it was an amazing story and I can’t wait to start the last book!

The terror is really ramping up in this series. The variety of delights and horrors in the dreamscapes is fantastic. My only difficulty is really understanding why the group still choose to risk their lives rather than have their dreaming parts of their minds wiped. Guess that shows that either a. I am a total coward or b. I haven't fully understood the risks. Hope to fully get it by the end of book 5.

4.5 Stars. Remember the 80s space opera, Flash Gordon? This book reads like that. When not evading shifty Shifters and mixed motivations in noble bandits, there’s always the Lost in Space robot (danger Will Robinson) and a ditsy blond for anxiety relief. Enjoy!

This is another great story to add to the series. I think the best part involved the plant-based water park. That was a really interesting idea and easy for me to imagine. I also loved the surprise involving the copy-Stefanie. I never saw that coming. And, I can’t forget about Diamond Jack, that was unfortunate. Overall, this was an entertaining, action-packed, fast-paced story. Nice work! I really can't wait to read book 5.
