Pass It On is not only a valuable resource for personal devotions & spiritual growth; it also provides a meaningful opportunity to pass God’s wisdom – and how it has shaped your own life – to the younger generations. Designed to be given to someone else after your own use, the book becomes a sort-of journal where you can record your own Bible study reflections and observations, as well as things you want the younger generation to know. Readers are encouraged to answer these questions with someone already in mind to pass it on to when finished.

The study aspect to this book divides the book of Proverbs into its 31 individual chapters and with a ‘guided tour’ of each before reading that chapter in its entirety. This gives readers an idea of what themes to watch for as they read, etc. Thornton also begins the book by talking about why the book of Proverbs is so important to our everyday lives as believers and gives a very thoughtful overview/definition of how the book of Proverbs defines wisdom. I really enjoyed this beginning and have several lines highlighted for posterity.

The journal part of Pass It On ends each chapter with opportunity to reflect on one verse that stood out to you from that chapter as well as a ‘going deeper’ section with study-type questions which address parts of the text as well as your own life experiences. Each study section concludes with ‘Connecting the Gospel’, ‘Personalizing a Prayer’ and ‘Sharing Your Story’. The end result is a keepsake for someone in your circle of influence (whether past, present, or future) as well as time meaningfully spent personally in God’s Word.

Bottom Line: Pass It On takes a unique approach to Bible study. Not only are you reflecting on your own heart, but you are doing so even as you look ahead to how best to impact someone else with your words and, most importantly, God’s wisdom. The structure and the writing are accessible and easy to navigate, and the truth that can be mined here is endless. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to pass on truth to the next generation.

Why I Choose this Book:

I’ve been reading the Proverb of the day for nearly four years now so to dig deeper into the book was intriguing to me. Plus, I thought it would be neat to fill out this book now – when I’m still single – with the idea of passing it along to my kids one day if I ever get married. I figured it would be interesting to see how my thoughts and perspectives change as I get older.

What I Thought about this Book:

When possible I read books entirely before reviewing them, but sometimes I get a book for review without enough time to go through it all the way. (For instance a Study Bible.) This is another one of those books because it’s supposed to be gone through slowly – they suggest you only go through one Proverb a week. Therefore, the thoughts I’m sharing are from what I’ve already gone through, plus my overall impressions.

The Cover

Y’all. It has a soft, leathery feel and is textured. I’m a touchy-feely person, so textures make me happy. If you look at the picture above there are “stitches”, well those are real, not just drawn on. And the words and the quill are engraved into the cover. And the gold lettering shimmers. Although the colors aren’t exactly my style, the rest of the book is a total feast for the eyes, as well as delightful to the touch. But. Enough about that.

The Concept

I really like the idea of filling out a book about the book of Proverbs for the next generation. How much more Biblical can you get? So many of the verses in Proverbs are of a father passing advice and wisdom along to his son, and so kudos to Mr. Thornton for creating this book.

The Introduction

The first twenty pages tell what you’re supposed to do with the book, as well as giving a birds-eye-view of Proverbs. For the most part I liked this, but there were times I found it slightly confusing.

The Chapter By Chapter Set Up

I like this a lot. It’s easy to understand, clear, and laid out nicely. It starts with a “Guided Tour” which is only a few paragraphs long and talks about the Proverb. Next “At-A-Glance” where we have a chart breaking the chapter down into verse sections. Then we have the Proverb itself, which includes breaks that correspond with the “At-A-Glance” chart. (I really like that.) And each chapter ends with several pages of “Reflections” where the reader gets to answer different questions, writer prayers, and share part of their life story for whoever they are going to “Pass It On” to.

The Questions

The questions themselves haven’t really blown me away with their greatness. There have been times when I’ve been slightly confused, or else not sure why a certain question is deemed important. Still, I’ve enjoyed getting to answer them, and they have caused me to pause and really reflect which is good.
Conclusion:

I’ve been enjoying this book so far, and look forward to continuing on with it. If my dad would fill out something like this (he wouldn’t – I asked) then I would totally get a book for him.

Rating:

I’m giving Pass It On 4 out of 5 stars, and 8 out of 10

First of all, I love the cover. I know that it is kind of irrelevant to what’s important inside this book, but it just caught my attention. In fact, it caught my daughter’s attention too. When I received it in the mail, she immediately came over and started asking all kinds of questions. Then I got the best question – “Mom, can you just not write in this book and give it to me when you are done with it so that I can fill it out?” Well of course, or better yet we can get you your own copy! I love finding a Christian book that my daughter is excited about. And a journaling/study book at that! Well done Champ Thornton, well done.

Basically this book is taking you through the book of Proverbs in a way that will not only grow your own spiritual self, but will be a testimony to those who come after you. It does start out with a “birds eye view” of the Proverbs chapter you are reading about in that lesson, but I recommend having your own bible nearby to get some more depth in it. Plus it will be a version that you like if you do not like the NIV that is provided in the text. It goes on to ask some really great in depth questions to get you thinking. At times you may want to even dig deeper into the bible, which means the chapter make take you longer to complete and that’s okay! It’s all in your own timing. Well, you and God!

Overall I thought this book was a great addition to our family. I cannot wait for my daughter to dive in and see how it helps in her life. I hope that it helps you as well! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When I first took a look at this book, I was kind of disappointed. It wasn't really what I expected, but then with further study and getting into it, I was actually quite thrilled.

This is a treasure you can pass on to the next generation.I am so excited about the opportunity to pass on a little touch of wisdom from God's Word, as well as, my personal experience to my children and grandchildren. I can already think of several of them, if not all, I would love to leave a book like this with.

This beautiful imitation leather journal feels wonderful to the touch, bends easily, and offers a range of diversity. The introduction gives you an overview of the book's content and suggestions on how to work through it. Each chapter of Proverbs is written directly into the script so you can read and journal at the same time without any added text. Once you have read the chapter there is a place to journal favorite verses, concepts that have caught your eye that you want to pass on to the next generation. It also includes a place for personal experiences, prayers, and much more.

I love how direct and personal this is. Each person you read this for would likely have a different outcome. I can't wait to use mine! I am just having a difficult time deciding who to pass it on to. This book contains a world of possibilities and encouragement for current and future generations. Not only will you be leaving a legacy, but you will be deepening your knowledge of Scripture as you do.

I received a copy of this journal courtesy of the publisher and Litfuse Publicity. I was not required to review positively and all opinions are my own.

This book has so much about it that I love. It goes through the Proverbs and it gives you a journal to really dig deep and record your thoughts.

First of all, this is a beautiful book/journal. The cover is so pretty and soft to the touch. It's an expensive looking journal that is pleasing to the eye and touch. It makes you want to pick it up and use it!

The inside is what is really beautiful as it has Proverbs written out for each day and then in-depth areas for journaling and prayer. What I like, is that there is a guided tour through each chapter and this really helps you to pull out of the Proverb what we need to know. It gives us guidance to really look deeply into those areas.

After you've read the Proverb, you then have the Identifying the Verse, Going Deeper, Connecting the Gospel, Personalizing Prayer, and finally Sharing Your Story. This gives you a way to really connect to the Word of God in a very personal way that helps you to remember.

This would be a great addition to your family devotions or homeschooling. This journal is intended for families to share with youth, however, I could definitely see using this in a youth group setting, as well. I have to say I really loved it for myself!

I highly recommend this book! I would have loved using this when I was homeschooling my children but am using for myself now during my quiet time. I just love it and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

In the publishing world, producing a bestseller is difficult enough, and producing two bestsellers proves even more challenging. With the publication of Pass It On, Champ Thornton follows up his successful The Radical Book for Kids with what I believe is an equally impressive, though much different, work bound for the devotional bestseller list.

Pass It On is an in-depth, journal-style study of the book of Proverbs that excels in its ability to clearly define the structure and purposes of this much-beloved portion of Scripture. What makes this study of Proverbs different is its unique keepsake format. Thornton’s passion for sharing the truths of God’s Word with the next generation is clearly evident in this book, as well as his The Radical Book for Kids; and the deeper the reader gets into this study of Proverbs, the more that passion becomes contagious. With plenty of space for recording thoughts on what you’ve gleaned from God’s words of wisdom, you’ll be encouraged to share wisdom from your own life with a child, grandchild, or other young family member.

Thornton begins with an overview of Proverbs that is deep but attainable. Each of the 31 passages is presented and then followed by a section for reflection, which includes the following divisions: Identifying a Verse (a meaningful verse with explanation for why it impacted the reader), Going Deeper (questions for in-depth analysis), Connecting the Gospel (matching a passage in Proverbs with a passage from the New Testament that shows how both point to Jesus), Personalizing a Prayer (prayer for the reader himself and the one he hopes will inherit this keepsake), and Sharing Your Story (personal examples of how the reader has seen the words of this particular proverb acted out in his own life).

Personally, I’m excited about this study for my own understanding of the book of Proverbs, and I love that I can gift it to my children with words of wisdom from my own life experiences. I give this keepsake 5 stars

Pass It On: A Proverbs Journal for the Next Generation By Champ Thornton is an excellent gift idea for the upcoming holiday season. This book has a great looking cover, and it’s also filled with a tremendous amount of wisdom. Pass It On is a book and a journal that is sure to be a wonderful keepsake for decades and centuries to come. This book brings the diligence of bible study and the discipline of journaling together as a powerful discipleship tool! Based on the book of Proverbs, Thornton’s journal will be the perfect resource for parents, children, and disciple-makers who want to let the word overflow in their hearts and spread to others!

Pass It On has numerous features which make this book well worth the money, time, and effort to buy and complete it:

A new translation based on the Greek New Testament. This Proverbs journal primarily uses Bruce Waltkes translation of the book of Proverbs, taken from his work in the New International Commentary on the Old Testament series.

Excellent commentary from sound resources. The first two pages of the endnotes include the following authors in it: Thomas Cranmer, Tom Schreiner, Timothy Keller, James Hamilton, and Graeme Goldsworthy. These references show a commitment to sound teaching as well as a commitment to a Christ-centered, biblical theological focus in the commentary.

A reflection section for personal application. The richest aspects of this book and journal are the “identifying a verse”, “going deeper”, “connecting the gospel”, and “personalizing a prayer” sections. These sections allow the words of Proverbs to sink deeply by the first person who works through the book. These sections are the “pass it on” portions that will prove beneficial for years to come. It will allow friends, children, or disciples to see how God’s word can impact their lives with wisdom and power.

Pass It On is an excellent discipleship tool, and I recommend it to anyone who is making disciples or raising children.

Pass It On: A Proverbs Journal for the Next Generation by Champ Thornton is a book that combines the styles of a commentary and Bible study to create a journal that is unique and purposeful. When I first received the book, I figured it was just another journaling type product amongst the many that are popular right now. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to learn that the heart behind this journal is to do what the title says, and pass it on to someone younger spiritually as a means for imparting the wisdom you gain while filling its pages. The old adage, "Don't judge a book by it's cover" is hard for me to follow as I truly appreciate aesthetics. Pass It On is as aesthetically pleasing as it is rich in content.

The first few pages of the book are dedicated to providing readers with a brief overview of Proverbs. After the overview, there are 31 entries that begin with a chapter of Proverbs. At the conclusion of each chapter, there are questions with space for readers to write in answers. The questions truly get to the heart, drawing on the text of each proverb as well as the reader's personal experience. One of the most important components of this book is a section at the conclusion of each chapter titled, Connecting the Gospel. This section is so important and helpful in creating an understanding of the role Proverbs has within the whole of Scripture and how it points to Jesus. I'm truly grateful for the faithfulness of Champ Thornton and the legacy he is leaving through Pass It On and I'm excited to see the impact it has for those who complete it.

I give Pass It On my highest recommendation and look forward to reading more from Champ in the future.

This book or journal is seriously the most beautiful book I have seen in a while. I love that this is centered around proverbs. Which is my favorite book of the bible right now? I found this a super intriguing to me. This journal dives deep into the meaning of each verse. I also love the concept of passing this book on to the next generation. It is something that your loved one or friend will like to receive.

The cover has a super soft leather feel, and it is intensely textured. I love the stitching of this book. I loved that the colors were so unique. The lettering is pretty and shimmery. I liked the whole cover concept.

The book starts out with an introduction. The first twenty pages tell you how to approach this book/journal. I loved the concept of a birds-eye view of proverbs. From there the book went proverb from the proverb. It begins with a guided tour which is small and compact, less than a few paragraphs. Then you get a glance view which provides a chart which has a break down of the verses. Then the chapter has a section for reflection. This allows you to write prayers, share stories, and answer various questions.

The questions were interesting but at times confusing. Sometimes I struggled to find a way to answer a few of them. They did allow you to reflect and think about proverbs in a different way.

I enjoyed this book so much. I think whoever receives this will love to read the words you up in the book. I would love to have received something like this from my mother or grandmother.

First I have to say that this book is gorgeous and the leather is soft and beautiful. The beginning of the book includes an introduction of how to use the book and then there are 31 chapters covering each Proverbs chapter. Each chapter includes a variety of things including a guided tour through the chapter, an at-a-glance section highlighting important verses, the verse in it’s entirety and a reflections and going deeper that asks questions about what was read and how it applies to you personally, with areas to write down the answers. Then there are 3 more sections, connecting the Gospel, personalizing a prayer and sharing your story, that continue asking questions about what was read and more personal questions, along with areas to write down the answers. At the end of the book there is an index where you can look up chapters based on different subjects

Overall, I thought the setup of this book and Proverbs study guide journal is really great and provides so many great questions to help readers think about what they have read and learn to apply it to their life. I personally find that Bible study books and journals are more effective when the author uses questions to fully engage the reader in the subject matter. I think this is an excellent study of the book of Proverbs and provides readers a great set up for really understanding the material they are reading and applying it on a personal level.

Thank you to the publisher, New Growth Press, for sending me a review copy of this book.

When I received this book, I was quite pleased with the design and how sturdy the book is. It is really a treasure to have a journal of this caliber to study, write down your thoughts and then pass it on. It can be passed to a family member, a friend or perhaps someone needing a word from God. The outside cover really caught my eye. The feather has meaning for our family because we are part Native American. This journal I hope will bless family members to come. I pray they read my thoughts, add theirs and pass it on to the next generation.

The journal is a study on Proverbs. It is divided into chapters and goes into depth about the scriptures. I love how there are questions for you to fill out to share your thoughts and as you do , your personal story is written in the journal. I think how much of a blessing this will be to my children as they see my thoughts of what God spoke to me. I highly recommend this to everyone. The journal is meant to guide you through scriptures, reflect on them and share your thoughts. I pray that the journal not only blesses you, but blesses generations to come.

I received a copy of this book from LitFuse. The review is my own opinion.

Pass It On is more than a study of the book of Proverbs found in the Bible. It has the look and feel of a journal because it is a journal. I didn't realize that before it arrived on my doorstep. Pass It On is meant to be used and then given to someone. The receiver gets to do the journal themselves and see how God has worked in your life through your entries.

Champ explains how Proverbs mirrors our seemingly random real-life situations and gives us real-life wisdom through its words. He takes its thirty one chapters and gives each one its own chapter in the journal. As I read through I gained a better understanding of each chapter of Proverbs and myself with the brief synopsis and questions to be answered at the end. I feel Pass It On can be a good way to grow a deeper walk in one's Christian faith. Journalers may especially enjoy Pass It On. I was provided a complimentary review copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Pass It On: A Proverbs Journal for the Next Generation is a Bible-journaling-style book I received for free in exchange for my honest review. Obviously, it focuses on the book of Proverbs and includes the full text chapter by chapter. At the end of each chapter are several reflection questions with space for journaling. This makes it seem like a Bible study book. But it’s more than that. There are also journaling prompts of what you might like to say to your children or others of the next generation in relation to the Proverbs. The idea is to complete the study with your notes and thoughts and then Pass It On. This keepsake book, created by Champ Thornton, has a lovely imitation leather cover. It is obviously designed as a special gift. I look forward to completing the study and the journaling and then passing it along to my children and, hopefully, eventually my grandchildren.

Wow! The cover is gorgeous…bright teal with mustard seeds triangles create a special feeling about the book. The soft velvety smooth exterior wouldn’t let go anyone who picks it up… Nice design.

This book is something. It goes as the student workbook filled with pages and spaces to encourage you to write and leave some wisdom on the sidelines, while studying the book of Proverbs. I love the idea that you can give this filled book to the next generations to pass on the wisdom and understanding on life and life’s situations. Discover the heart of the Father God Who invites you to soak in all the insight and revelation He wants to release on you today, while helping your kids with hard questions.

I have never read through the entire book of Proverbs. I have read a select few that have popped up in bible studies or sermons - but I have never read through the entire book. This book helped me to gain a greater understanding of how God speaks to us through Proverbs.
I loved the way this broke it down to unpack each chapter. I loved writing out the answers through out the book. It truly was a pleasure to read.

A gospel-centered, disciple-making resource for parents and grandparents alike. If you a godly parent or grandparent whose passion is to pass on the wisdom of God’s Word to the next generation, this book is a good start toward that end.
