Blood From a Stoner

Rate this book
*** A paranormal gay romance with vampires & weed. In Seattle. Obviously. ***

Greg Dawson’s not sure which he regrets more—becoming a vampire or becoming a software engineer. Immortality? Not all it’s cracked up to be. The job? Way more headache than it’s worth, especially on those increasingly frequent nights when he’s overworked and hangry. With a deadline looming and his hunger growing, he’s nearing the end of his tether. Then relief comes from an unexpected source—Zane Webber, the hot programmer Greg’s been fantasizing about for two years.

Disregarding company policy, Zane lets him feed, but kind of forgets to mention he’s got some weed in his system. The next thing Greg knows, he’s high as a kite… and he likes it. He wants more. Except how much of that high is secondhand weed, and how much is the electric and undeniable chemistry between him and Zane?

That chemistry draws them back to each other again and again, and suddenly their downtime is full of sex, smoke, feeding… and emotions. The only problem is that Zane’s a mortal. If they’re in this for the long haul, then Greg has to either turn Zane or accept a future of watching him wither and die. Greg doesn’t want to lose Zane, but he also can’t stomach condemning him to this “life.”

And if they can’t find some middle ground, they’ll have no choice but to let their love go up in smoke.

This novella is approximately 26,000 words.

L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.

Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.

Everyone knows the pluses and minuses of vampire unlife. You can live forever if you’re careful to stay out of the sun. You never have to worry about the problems associated with aging. Your senses are sharper. On the downside, life can become very lonely when family members, friends and lovers die. The only thing vampires can feed on and digest is blood, so no going out with friends to try that new neighborhood bistro.

In Greg’s and Zane’s world, vampires live alongside humans, so they must do what society expects of them, like work and pay taxes. While companies are required to make reasonable provisions to accommodate vampire sleep patterns, they can certainly be exploited in other ways.

“Staring at the warm lights from distant offices, I wonder if the occupants are as frustrated as I am. If they’ve fed recently. If someone told their bosses that vampires only need to feed about once a week – even less if we get a nibble here or there – and if that made their companies decide they don’t actually need to take lunch every day. If I ever find out who told that to the powers that be at TekNorth, not to mention the legislators who exempted us from the mandatory break laws, they’re going to have a very disgruntled and hangry vampire on their hands.”

Greg Dawson is unhappy with the grueling hours and frenetic pace of his work as a software engineer. The one bright spot of his job is the programmer he’s been crushing on for two years.

Zane Webber has a thing for fangs. He also enjoys his weed. Even though marijuana is legal in Seattle and TekNorth turns a blind eye to its use as long as it doesn’t impact performance, feeding coworkers is against company policy. Nevertheless, Zane offers himself to a tired and hungry Greg.

This is a funny, sweet, and steamy story. I loved how Greg’s and Zane’s relationship progressed from feeding, getting high and sexy times to something much deeper. While the story was told from Greg’s perspective, the author did a great job conveying Zane’s emotions and feelings. I very much enjoyed their highs and lows.

A perfect story to cuddle up with on a cold winter night.

I think I’ll read more of these stories(vampire-gay romance) in the future but not ones that focus so much on sex. It was a good read but not great, maybe because it was short and I wanted more. Told in Greg’s POV, 1st person, fast-paced. It’s a stand-alone novella and it was enjoyable, hope you like it as well!

It was a sweet, short book, well, more sexy than sweet. It packs so much heat into the short length that you can actually see steam rising out of the pages themselves! :P

There’s not that deep a story for us to sink our teeth into, but the quickie covers all the emotions we usually crave while reading an MM book, so let go of your reluctance and give it a chance.

P.S. - I would have loved an epilogue, though.

Funny and Sexy!! 3.5 Stars!!!

This was a sweet and funny novella set in a world where vampires are out and the only the only thing special about them is their immortality. And, of course, their need for blood.

Greg, an always 24 year old vampire, works a depressing and stressful job as a software engineer. He is not a happy man. When we meet him, he's hangry and bemoaning his fate and lack of blood at the office. In walks hottie programmer, Zane, who is curious enough to offer Greg a little blood to tide him over. Zane, high on pot, becomes a human edible. Greg gets high and loves it.

The short story takes off from there with very little angst, lots of sex, and weed.

I liked Zane and felt like I knew him a little better than Greg, even though it was Greg's POV we read. I felt there could have been more to Greg than being a regretful vampire who hated his job; and I could have done without the endless references to his no longer beating heart. Lacking a big plot, I'd have like more characterization.

Overall, this was a sweet, funny, and steamy read.

What a fun, sexy little story! Short, sweet and perfect. Vampires aren't usually my thing but if more books were this light-hearted, but smooooooooking hot at the same time? I'd read more of them!

My favorite parts were how LAW portrayed office work, so very Office Space with it's drudgery and ridiculousness. And Nick J. Russo completely sold the tale with his narration.

First off, for any that this matters to, this is not a HEA but a HFN. That said I really liked this story, it was definitely unique, explored some things I had not read about previously and was mostly very light and fluffy, all things I enjoyed! The writing and character development and world-building were very well done, so much so I kinda wished this book was longer or perhaps there was a second book. Due to the author's wit (pun intended) I found myself highlighting multiple parts of this story! Overall this was a fun and very enjoyable read!

Grade A, 100% Prime L.A. Witt smut at her finest.

You know when you can count on her for just the best damn f'ing and nobody does it better.

Narrated in spectacular fashion by the always excellent Nick J. Russo... a perfect combination which never fails. It's funny, it's sexy, and it's sweet - a great romance (in under 3 hours).

Great narration coupled with a fun, super sexy story. This is rather short, and I would have loved a dual POV, but in all I had a great time listening.

Story = 3 stars, Narration = 5 Stars; Total =4 Stars.

Too much sex not enough story for my liking. BUT, I think the idea of a vampire who gets high because he feeds blood from a stoner is pretty hilarious! Don't think I've read that one before. So PROPS for that :)

This is an unexpected gem!

I really have to say right off the bat, if you have ANY problem with recreational marijuana use don't even bother. The cover and blurb should put you off but I am reinforcing that here. It is now legal in many place which I wholly approve of and support. If you don't, move on nothing to see here.

Anyway, on to the story. I expected a light sexy romance with lots of humor to pass the time. I definitely underestimated L.A. Witt. Duh! What was I thinking?

Anyway, this is a bit of an alternate universe where vampires are known and part of society. We also find that they get immortality but still have to work for a living and pay their taxes. That really sucks! Greg, our vampire is working 14 hour days on a software rollout which leaves him with no time to feed, get any real sleep and is completely stressed over the micromanaging and complete lack of understanding or support from the company he works for. If you work anywhere in corporate America you'll sympathize with his grumbling. I couldn't help giggling, been there & done that!

Anyway, I really do not want to put any spoilers here but his crush offers a snack to tied him over without telling him he had marijuana in his system. What followed had me laughing out loud to the point I had to explain to the hubby what was so funny.

After that there is a confrontation because seriously Greg was under enough stress without being caught high or messing up the software rollout.

Then there is a 'meet cute' that bring Greg and his crush Zane back together that leads to smexing and another high that Greg really enjoyed. After that we get to watch Greg and Zane begin a relationship that is supposed to be for the fun of it but love always sneaks in there doesn't it. Of course, Greg is a vampire and Zane is a mortal so as soon as Greg realizes he is in love he bails. At this point I don't think I've spoiled anything that wasn't in the blurb so I have to be really careful now.

I will say though that there is a scene that broke my heart. No great sobbing but my eyes stung and I had to get a tissue for my sniffles.

This is not a fated mates or magical love type of story. We get to know both of the MC's and their relationship grows organically over weeks and months. They go from fuck buddies where Greg gets to feed and get high and Zane gets the rush of the bite while Greg feeds and both get great sex to dating. There is one date that was beautiful!

I think I need to stop now, if I don't I'll tell you so much you won't have to read the book. I really enjoyed getting to know Greg and Zane. Yes, there is humor here and some angst that broke my heart but didn't take over the story. I'm giving it 4 stars, real tears would have made it a five.

Greg is a vampire, and as a vampire the only thing he can consume is blood. So that means no energy drinks and junk food to fuel his way through the late nights at his job as a software engineer. Oh, and it also means he can smoke weed...

Enter: human edible.

Until he drinks the blood from his fellow employee Zane (don't tell HR!), who happens to have some weed still in his system, causing Greg to get high.

Add in love and other stuff, what more can you want from a novella!

I first heard of this book when the author talked about it on Facebook - about this romance between a vampire and a stoner. Giggling, I made a note to snatch this up when it became available.

It's a quick read, and just based on the title, you'd think it'd be all fun and sexy times, and you'd be half-right.

Greg is the aforementioned vampire, forever frozen at 24, needing blood, having to stay out of the sunlight, and somewhat regretting his decision to become one of the undead, even if it will allow him to eventually pay off his student loans. He works as a software engineer for an IT company, and since in this particular universe, people (mortals) know about vampires, the company accommodates them by having the vamps work overnight, and provide sleeping quarters in the windowless basement in case of unpaid overtime so they don't have to drive home in the daylight.

Zane is a mortal/human, similar in age to Greg, and works at the same company as a programmer. On whom Greg has a secret crush. Zane also indulges in weed which is legal in Seattle, where they both live and work.

Speaking of work, the company has been putting Greg under a lot of pressure to get the new product ready for release, which means overtime and no days off, and Greg is hangry. Which, being a vampire, is never a good thing.

Then Greg happens upon Zane outside, while taking a minute to breathe, and hangry Greg takes up Zane on his offer of taking a sip or five from Zane's neck. Which is super frowned upon at the company, but hey - whatever. Except Zane has partaken of some pot, unbeknownst to Greg. And now Greg is also a bit high.

I laughed and laughed and laughed at this point, because high vamp was hilarious.

This being an L.A. Witt book, the sexy times are right around the corner, and boy, do they ever burn up the sheets. With or without weed, with or without getting high. The author has a real knack of writing those scenes, and they never felt gratuitous or repetitive.

Obviously, as feelings develop, as they usually do in romance books, Greg now has a problem on his hands - he's immortal. Zane, not so much. And considering how much Greg regrets having chosen this life, he sure as hell won't convert Zane. But thinking of Zane growing older and eventually dying also makes Greg's unbeating heart hurt. What's a vamp to do?

I'll leave you to read this for yourself...

It's not easy fleshing out your characters to make them realistic in a novella, especially since one of them is supernatural, and you also have that whole world-building thing needing to happen, but the author does a fantastic job sprinkling the info into the narrative without ever making it feel like info-dump. Greg bitches about higher insurance rates, and extra tinting on the car windows, and being taxed higher than mortals, and generally having to pay more for stuff, because of that whole undead thing, which is plenty to make this world feel real enough.

There's more to the book than just the sexy times, even if those are plenty. There's also doubt and confusion and fear, and the author did a great job exploring those feelings. As the story is told entirely from Greg's POV, we don't get a whole lot of insight into Zane, but what we get is enough to paint a picture of the guy - laid-back, a bit of a free spirit, definitely into weed and sex with Greg, but also insightful enough to realize that Greg needs to come to terms with what's bothering him, and then giving him the space and time to figure things out. Well done, that.

Recommended for all L.A. Witt fans, and those who love romance books that are sexy, light, and fluffy, but also have some serious undertones.

If I remember correctly, I think this author wrote the story on a dare or something like that and I had no idea what to expect, but I actually quite enjoyed the story. It's a really quick read or listen and imo more romantic erotica than erotic romance, but the characters have great chemistry in AND out of the bedroom. There is a lot of really hot, cannabis infused sex, but I treasured the moments where they just talked and connected most. I think I would have enjoyed this story even more if the story had been longer and we had gotten more story with the same amount of sex and had gotten to know the characters even better. However, I really liked what I got to know about the characters and thought they were very likable and their story with a nice HFN ending was really cute. If you like a quick read, a cute love story with likable characters, great chemistry & a lot of very hot sex, this might just be the book for you!

There are stories that seem like there's no possible way that they could work, that the concept is just too ridiculous. Then you read it and it just works and is so sweet and sexy and funny! My only gripe is that I wanted Zach's point of view. Otherwise, this was a great story!

This was extremely entertaining for me.
It's funny & witty & sexy AF. Nick J. Russo's narration for the audio is fantastic & made it all the sexier. He also made Greg's hangry-hate-my-job moments more amusing, and made me sympathize with his regrets.
The only negative, which knocks off a star, is that I really would've liked to have known more about the characters' pasts. It's as if Greg had no childhood or adolescence, as if his life hadn't begun until shortly before he became a vampire. He'd only been a vampire for about a decade at the start of the story, so knowing more about his past would've been a good addition. The same goes for Zane - we know next to nothing about his past. You get a feel for their present life & their general personalities, but again, it would've been good to know more.
BUT it is a short. If we're to read this story as a singular period of their lives and as Greg having an epiphany about his life, then it works well all to itself. It is both an HEA & HFN. I believe that they will be together for some version of forever, though we might not get to see the entire rest of their lives.

Not terribly clever, but a cute idea and pretty hot! I like all things vampire and that was a funny little different take on things.

LA Witt books usually are a hit or miss for me. When she’s good, she’s really good, but some of her books don’t work for me at all. This falls somewhere in the middle, cause the characters weren’t all that interesting and the story wasn’t… well there wasn’t much story at all.

But she’s so exceptionally talented at describing THAT moment right there, before you fuck, where it’s all just insane attraction and it feels like time is standing still and everything is charged and just so…. UAGH. It may be over the top but it works for me. And there was plenty of that in here.

“Blood from A Stoner” is a different take on human-vampire society, set on AU Seattle where the two beings lived in harmony. The novella was a crush turned to hook-up turned to (true) love trope between vampire Greg and human Zane. For novella length romance, the rapid switch of Greg and Zane’s relationship is expected. What I like was the way the author treated how the characters handled the difference between them, making the whole situation almost real. In short, this is a HFN paranormal love story with rational characters. One a reader could read in one sitting and finish it with a smile on their face.

This is a short and sweet paranormal romance! Software engineer and vampire, Greg Dawson is sick of the nightly grind. He bumps into Zane Dawson, a cute mortal co-worker who offers to let him feed. Vampires can’t get stoned unless … they feed from someone who is already stoned. Pity Zane forgot to mention his habit! What follows is a series of highs, both sexual and drug-related as the two get to know each other. I loved the guys, their intersections, and the paranormal angle. I’d give it 5 stars if it wasn’t so short with a HFN ending (129 pp, about 3 hrs on audio). I have the munchies for more! Nick J Russo gives a perfect performance here, capturing the highs and lows (LOL).

This is the kind of novella I LIKE and WANT MORE OF!! We had the romance, the sex, it was coherent... LOOVVEDD IT!
If I really had to nitpick though It's a heartbreak wainting to happen. But the story ended on a hopeful note where the mcs were happy. So I guess I'm happy too and for once am glad it was a novella length story and I didn't need more.
