Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

A lot more story then I usually get in a Dragon Ball series/book. It was a bit of a surprise, a nice surprise, but a surprise none the less.

Most of the book concentrates on the investigation of the identity and origin of Goku Black. This spans universes, and time. The book also shows what has been going on in the future since Trunks destroyed the androids in his time line. The action does not really start till thee last two chapters and the fights are much more detailed then the previous issue. Though the Saiyans have a habit of enjoying a fight too much to strike the finishing blow. I can't wait for the next part of this battle.

I great chapter of the Dragon Ball Super series, more story driven then the other books/episodes in the but in a good way, then a decent fight to finish this chapter off, and a great spring board for the next book.

Dragon Ball is a comic very close to my heart. I’ve loved it since I was a kid learning to read and was delighted to see it return recently for a new run with Dragon Ball Super. So believe me when I say I’m genuinely disappointed that this third book was absolute garbage. This Goku Black storyline is the worst one since that Android nonsense in DBZ!

A new villain called Goku Black destroyed future Trunks’ world so future Trunks has travelled back in time AND across universes to recruit Goku and Vegeta to go back with him and defeat Goku Black. But who is Goku Black and what does he want?

That sounds like a relatively clear plotline, right? Except it takes well over half the book for Akira Toriyama to get around to it. Up until then is the most meandering, pointless drivel you’ve ever read. This book is Dragon Ball at its most convoluted. There are Lord of Lords, Lords of Everything, Gods of Destruction, Gods of who knows what who want who knows what - the needless hierarchy is confusing and distracts without ever adding anything of value to the story. Towards the end Toriyama literally has to include a diagram explaining what’s happening and even then it’s not clear!

Goku Black’s true identity and motivations were so bizarre. He wants to destroy all mortals because mortals destroy all planets - which seems kinda hypocritical considering the damage he’s wrought on future Trunks’ planet, not to mention the mental gymnastics involved in objecting to destruction with more destruction. And he’s based his entire worldview on one encounter with some humanoid lizards on some random planet from thousands of years ago! … huh??

It takes an age to get to some actual fighting - in a supposedly martial arts comic! - as Vegeta steps up to take on Goku Black. But even the fighting doesn’t make sense. Vegeta’s kicking Black’s ass and then suddenly Black manages to find another Saiyan level - “rose” - even though he was barely able to do Super Saiyan a few pages ago and then there’s another villain and… ugh. I just didn’t care anymore at that point.

This third volume of Dragon Ball Super is what bad writing and an overly complicated plot looks like. The end result is a boring and stupid comic - maybe the worst Dragon Ball book ever. Introducing the concept of parallel universes really was the worst thing to happen to this series. Barely readable - I hope Toriyama just abandons this storyline soon for something less tortuous and tedious.

--

EN Now that I’ve read both "Dragon Ball" and "Dragon Ball Z", I can draw a much clearer distinction with this new series.

First of all, this is the first one not illustrated by Akira Toriyama. Here, Toriyama dedicates himself entirely to writing the story — and it shows. The narrative is much richer in dialogue than the previous ones; I’d say it has at least twice as much (if not more), which greatly enhances the storytelling and depth.

Toyotaro does an excellent job with the artwork, to the point where you can hardly tell Toriyama isn’t the one drawing it. In fact, I’d even say he brings a higher level of detail to the visuals.

"Dragon Ball Super" focuses heavily on the concept of multiverses, and for now, the entire narrative revolves around that. I love seeing how the relationship between Vegeta and Son Goku has evolved — there’s now a genuine sense of camaraderie between them, even with Vegeta’s usual bad temper.

This next volume wasn’t too bad, but until the last two chapter it kind of felt mostly like build up for greater fights and events to come in the following chapters. That being said I’m stoked for all the goku black scenes especially after he’s gone full magenta now. Really since it’s been so long since I’ve watched the beginning of the anime, I really am not a hundred percent how this is gonna fully turn out.

This is actually pretty damn entertaining even if follows a lot of the same beats as Z.

So Trunks comes back from the future to warn Goku and the others about a new villain. BLACK GOKU. So yes...his name is very original. But come on, we got Vegeta's kids named after trunks and bras, so...lolz. Anyway Black Goku has destroyed Future Trunks timeline or least taken over. It's kind of what he does. So Goku and Vegeta decide they're going to teach this little punk a lesson.

The battle scenes are pretty great here, and Vegeta finally gets to show off his fighting style again. I also thought there was some great freaking funny moments, one involving Goku not ever Kissing anyone. I think the pacing works though some scenes are very heavy exposition explaining the gods structure and stuff that tend to go on a little too long.

Overall, while this is only half of the full arc, it still is pretty entertaining. Hoping this series continues to be fun. A 3.5 out of 5.

The story is finally getting back to the Z roots, digging the story a lot more now, but these new power levels are pretty lame and unoriginal, two new saiyan levels in three volumes, are we gonna go through the entire color spectrum?! Art is not even colored.

Man, I'm so fed up with future Trunks storyline! It's like being served spoiled food, heated up and covered in fresh breadcrumbs - it's still no good, no matter what you're going to do. Goku Black is a lame villain, his motivation is just idiotic, and the whole thing seems to be cooked up only to revisit the potara fusion .

Why, oh why did Dragon Ball Super ever see the light of day?

This volume is very reminiscent of older Dragon Ball, with random power ups, time travelling, and action upon action. It focuses on plot progression and exposition, setting the scene for what's to come in the future (or the past...).

While the story arcs are fun and feature some exciting battles, I have a tough time wrapping my head around all these colour-saiyans that are being introduced. How can I even take them seriously? It used to be awesome that hard work led to new levels of super saiyan but in this case, you get to reach new heights through failure.

The story also explores new ideas that bring a new amount of intrigue but sometimes struggles to make it as compelling as it could be.

It remains to be seen if this story arc will deliver.

The first two volumes of Dragon Ball Super were some of my least favorite Dragon Ball content. It's not necessarily that the story is bad, it's just that it's so clearly retrofitting the plot from the anime in such a small amount of space that it made the whole affair extremely cluttered. There was an incredibly important plot line that was relegated to an off-panel explainer in the manga.

Reading volume three, it's clear that Toriyama wasn't all that interested in the first arc of the anime and wanted to get to the Goku Black saga that begins here. Almost all of my complaints from the previous volumes have been rectified. Toriyama now let's the story breathe a bit more and it reads like a pretty traditional late Dragon Ball Z story. Unlike the first two volumes, I'm enjoying the manga version of the story more than the anime. Now that Toriyama is free to expand where necessary, cut any anime-style filler, and establish the manga as a more separate entity, he's back in rare form. Toyotaro does a good job of illustrating in what I'd consider the late Dragon Ball house style. It's a bit less cartoony than Toriyama's early work on the series, but the style here is practically indistinguishable from what fans of the anime will recognize.

I am knocking the volume a bit because of my personal feelings towards time travel arcs. The original Trunks/Android saga from Z was good, but there is a certain point here where the story starts to become quite convoluted. There's time travel, alternate timelines, alternate universes, and multiple versions of the same character existing at the same time in spots. It can be pretty confusing. I can't help wonder what my experience would have been with the material if I hadn't already watched the corresponding anime and was now experiencing the story for the second time. I'll note that it was one of my least favorite sagas from the show, so far.

All that being said, it still felt to me like a classic Dragon Ball mix of top notch action and intermingled gags. After putting off reading this volume for a while based on my experience with the first two, I'm happy to report that I'm looking forward to getting back to it more regularly once again.

Dragon Ball Super is treading a lot of the same ground as the originals, as is my comment… this sentiment is nothing new when it comes to Super. However I am enjoying it! Although, I can’t tell if I am just diggin it because I’m happy to be back in this world or the story is truly grabbing me. Regardless, I am stoked to meet new characters and be back in the Capsule Corp world of Dragon Ball. That’s enough for me.

Alright. I wasn’t sure about this but it slowly getting better, volume by volume. We got some answers about who this Goku Black is, and Vegeta and the real Goku got to future’s Trunks time to help him. So far it’s not looking good but thanks to Trunks’ diversion, they both managed to get away.

Okay, I think I will enjoy this storyline, but this volume took so long to build up and there were times when it was confusing trying to follow who was who and what universe they were from and everything. I think it would have been better if things were more clear and the main plot didn't take so long to build up.

3.75 Stars. Many laugh out loud moments that aren't in the anime are in the early chapters. I do find that the manga is more straightforward than the anime when explaining who Goku Black is. Toyotaro also seems to be in love with speed lines which at times can become a tad distracting. Better than the last volume but still with room to improve.

Après un tome 1 un peu fragile au niveau de la narration, je suis nostalgique de redécouvrir l'histoire de san Goku à travers un univers multiple. Ils ont réussi à garder une pointe d'humour des premiers tomes de la série originelle.

Another great read of the Dragon ball franchise! The Goku Black storyline is very different from the anime, such as him turning super sayian before going up to Rose.
