This collection is a must have for anyone who loves to read cozy mysteries with cats, witches and quirky small town settings. A Witchy Boxed Set contains the first two books in the Harper Grant Series: A Witchy Business and A Witchy Mystery.
A Witchy Business The small town of Abbott Cove holds a secret… It’s home to the Grant family of witches! Harper Grant is happy working at Archie’s Diner as she tries her best to avoid the attentions of the town’s gossips. However, when a body turns up during Abbott Cove’s annual festival, she begins to understand her family isn’t the only one hiding secrets. With the help of the new swoon-worthy police officer, Joe McGrady, Harper finds herself on the trail of the perpetrator. Will Harper uncover the killer’s identity before it’s too late?
A Witchy Mystery Harper Grant is trying to get out of attending yoga classes with her sister, when she makes a gruesome discovery. Grandma Grant is intent on causing her usual mischief, and the townsfolk of Abbott Cove cause Harper no end of trouble as she tries to help the most difficult ghost she has ever had to deal with. With the help of police officer, Joe McGrady, Harper finds herself on the trail of the perpetrator. Will Harper uncover the killer’s identity before anyone else is murdered?
I really had fun with these stories. I enjoy cozy mysteries and always ready to dive into a new series.
Abbott Cove is a small town inhabited by witches. One in particular stands out, Harper Grant. She can see and speak to the dead. Often spotted looking like she’s talking to herself, she’s fodder for the gossip mill. And you know how small towns are. To avoid this, she explains her position to the newly departed spirits when they come to her for help.
Sticking her nose into Officer Joe McGrady’s investigations means she gets to see him more often, but probably not the best way to get up close and personal with the handsome hunk.
Both of these were fun mysteries. Nothing too gory. Lots of laughs. Mysteries that kept you guessing with a mixed compliment of suspects. And a dab or too of romantic anticipation. Harper was fun, whip smart, and not afraid to tell it like it was. I grew quite fond of her. And she sure had a vast amount of patience. Some of these ghosts she knew in their former lives. They weren’t so nice then either.
Priced at 99 cents, this set is a steal. Love the cozies. Grab a copy.
I'm not certain which name to use since I've read books under both names: Danica Britton and D. S. Butler. Either name will give the reader something clean and entertaining to read.
A Witchy Boxed Set - This set contains the first two books of the Harper Grant Mystery series: A Witchy Business and A Witchy Mystery. Both books are well written, quickly read and entertaining. The mysteries are well handled, but even with the twists and kinks, I figured out the baddies. I had fun with Harper and her adventures; she's a likable character and she continues to develop with each book. Her family, friends and community are just interesting and likable, too, and grow more on their own through their involvements.
The story lines of both books keeps the reader immersed in the pages. There's no stupidity, just naivety here and there. The stories are clean, but there's well done touches of sexual interest, not tension yet, between Harper and the Deputy. I'm interested in reading the rest of the series, since they're my kind of relaxing to read witches. 4*
A Witchy Business #1 - Fun to read. This book is well written, quickly read and entertaining; good humor. I had fun with Harper; she's a likable character and she does develop with each book. Her family and community are interesting, likable and steady growing, too. The story line kept me immersed in the pages; really the stuff Harper puts herself in and what happens to her keeps you reading. There's no stupidity on her part, things just happen. The mystery was well done and many twists are thrown at the reader, but I still figured the correct baddie. This is a clean story. 4*
A Witchy Mystery #2 - More humor. This book is well written, quickly read and entertaining with more humor. I still had fun with Harper; she's a likable character and she does keep developing. Her family, friends and community are interesting, likable and steady growing, too. This story line kept me immersed in the pages; Harper doesn't fail to put and find herself in situations, which just keeps you reading. There's no stupidity on her part, things just happen. The mystery was well done and many twists are thrown at the reader, but I still figured the correct baddie. The story is clean, but there's well done touches of sexual interest, not tension yet, between Harper and the Deputy. 4*
Harper Grant and the Poisoned Pumpkin Pie #5: This is a short story filled with humor, magic and laughs. This time there isn't a murder, but there's an investigation that gets stopped when a big investigation happens. Harper uses a little magic and wonders if her magic caused the poisoning. Good for a coffee break or a little down time; very relaxing. Still clean. This short can also be found in Witch or Treat, a collection of paranormal stories. 4*
Witch or Treat: A Collection of Paranormal Cozy Shorts D. S. Butler has a Harper Grant short in this collection. I've also read books and shorts by Regina Welling and Erin Lynn, Joynell Schultz, and Ruby Blaylock, and found all these ladies write entertaining stories. If you like any of the above, you'll like them all. I didn't have time to read more before I had to post this review, but I'm interested in reading all of these shorts. 4*
The Witchy Boxed set contains the first two paranormal cozy mysteries featuring the delightful Harper Grant, a young witch who doesn’t have any talent for casting spells, but can see and talk to ghosts. In A Witchy Business and A Witchy Mystery, Harper confronts the ghosts of murder victims who have not been able to move on to the next world until their killers are discovered and brought to justice. It is not easy for Harper to find the guilty party in either story as she must first help the ghosts accept the fact that they are no longer alive, and grasp the idea that no one but Harper can see, hear, and communicate with them. The ghosts have no idea who killed them, but Harper is given some assistance by a resident ghost in the restaurant where she works, and is encouraged by her sister and grandmother, witches who rely on spells to perform their magic. The three quirky family members live in a small town and are viewed by the residents as odd, but acceptable, and no one guesses their secret. I immediately ordered the next book in this light-hearted mystery series to find out what happens when Harper finally lands a date with Joe, the hunky deputy in town, and to learn more about Smudge, the cat who adopted her in the second book. What can I say? I’m a sucker for witches, ghosts, spells, and black cats with green eyes. I should get out more.
You know what? I wasn't sure what I would think of this book. It was 99 cents, I pick it up for a little mystery in my life... who knows how it would turn out?
And I actually really liked it!
Sure, there were formatting errors, there were some editing errors, and maybe a few times I was rolling my eyes, but... it was genuinely fun. A very fun, witchy read.
I really like Harper. She's a good main character, and reminds me of myself at times. A bit of a busybody (though not always her choice, of course), kinda quirky, kinda crazy... She was great!
Yeah. These two books were good, and fun. I might just have to pick up the third one around Christmas time!
While there is nothing particularly original in this series--there is the usual somewhat inept witch/investigator, the crazy grandma, the irritating sister/best friend, a couple of aggravating ghosts and a hot cop--the series is well put together and fairly well written. So if you love the genre and type, you will like this series as well. I did enjoy this as a relaxing read on a cold fall day; I can recommend it as a cute romp filled with ghosts and witches.
+ Enjoyable mystery that progresses well. The main character is quite likeable. The story is unpredictable in the main. The side characters are interesting and beg to have their stories enlarged. - I found the family dynamics too spiteful, it made me uncomfortable. A huge piece of chapter 19 is copied to chapter 20. The ghosts are too alike in the two books.
Cute and catchy. Harper strikes me as someone that we all see within ourselves. She’s often trying to be a supportive friend and so the right thing even if she goes about it the wrong way. Smudge is also adorable and is the reason I’ll be picking up further books.
These books are entertaining and easy, just the thing for when you want to relax and submerge yourself in the pure pleasure of a funny quick paced mystery . It is hard to stop once started so allow time to read the whole story, and then relax and enjoy !
The books were great. I liked everything about them except need to change each ghost attude, make them different. Would recommend your books to family and friends
These two stories were fun with spunky characters who are representative of strong, independent women. If you enjoy a bit of paranormal, and a touch of romance with your mysteries, consider these novels.
I read both of these before as singles but they were still very enjoyable the second time around. Characters quirky but likeable. Plots interesting and exciting. Satisfying conclusion.
I had a hard time getting into this book, but when I did the reading was quick. There were twists and turns all throughout the story and I couldn’t wait to get to the next page and the next chapter to see what was coming up next.
I'm 85% done with A Witchy Boxed Set: Very cute. Characters flow nicely with each other. With the first book, I totally didn't see the murderer coming. I love books like this. When multiple people you think could be the murderer then the author throws in the twist. This is my first time reading D.S. Butler I will be reading others from her hopefully soon.
