After the introduction of CRISPR and off-the-shelf technology, corporate and home-based gene hackers have flooded the world with genetically altered humans and animals from ancient history, mythology, and demented imaginations. Surviving populations have withdrawn into walled cities and family compounds as monsters take over the world’s wildernesses. An elvish brother and sister lead a caravan of genetically altered humans westward to a mountain sanctuary to escape persecution from purebred humans. The caravan of domesticated dinosaurs and gene-hacked animals crosses a country covered in carnivorous plants and animals, collecting genetically altered refugees looking for safety from a world on the edge of unaltered humanity’s final extinction. Final Extinction is a wonderfully creative future world. A group of genetically-modified friends embark on an action-filled journey to help protect other “mutants” from the persecutions of the unaltered “purebloods”. It’s an age-old story of prejudice against that which is different, with a twist. Fantastic genetic engineering has changed humans, animals, and plants, while also adding back many types of dinosaurs. Now, humans may need these changes to survive an increasingly dangerous world.
As always, the world-building is exceptional and the characters are fun. The roads are overgrown with weeds. There are few vehicles, so people often travel on foot or with unusual steeds. Attacks are common. People now trade with precious metals and dinosaur teeth! I love the vivid descriptions. Xan, an elvish empath, “could feel the pressure of their minds like a headache that almost made the sun bright.” This is a book that will keep you turning the page. Five stars!
