Mankind excels at killing. We are especially creative when killing each other. This was true ten thousand years ago. This holds true now. The only difference is the scale of destruction we have learned to unleash. Few can comprehend the scale of the weapon that Krisko Borivoj (a.k.a Bora) has now unlocked. Within the last two weeks, Bora’s scientists have engineered a weapon surpassing the destructive power of a nuclear warhead. Far surpassing. Now he is ready to launch. Right now, off the east coast of America, Bora’s hand-picked team of highly-skilled terrorists are securing the perfect location to launch their weapon. Within the next two hours, they will launch their attack. An underwater power facility might seem an unlikely location from which to launch the most devastating weapon mankind has ever devised, but the small team of US Marines tasked to defend the facility will soon learn the truth. They will learn how blood-thirsty some men can become. They will learn that failure will leave our world in unrecognizable turmoil. And they will learn that Mother Nature is still the world’s deadliest assassin.
SHANE M BROWN was born in 1974 and writes from Brisbane, Australia. He attended James Cook University, graduating with a First Class Honors Degree in Biological Science and a Masters Degree in Underwater Archaeology. Shane has published multiple short stories and recently signed a contract selling the rights for a feature film to be based on one of his stories. His other novels are titled FAST and PLAZA. His collection of short stories is titled AFTER.
It has been a few years since I read the last F.A.S.T. thriller (Haywire) back in 2013. I have also read and enjoyed Plaza. I came across Swarm and jumped on it. Loved it. Non-stop underwater action. Really bad ass villains and as always, some unusual creatures. I will have to hunt down Melt, another Shane Brown thriller. A+ for sure on Swarm!
This novel is a blend of high paced sci-fi action and monster thriller; and the combination works well. This is the perfect book for a flight or a beach read, not too heavy or too deep, but fast moving and lots of fun. The actions ratchets up higher and higher as the story progresses and it kind of reminded me of a video game in that regard.
Shane Brown writes clearly and I have an easy time visualizing the action scenes no matter how over-the-top they are. The main characters have been featured in two other novels so you may want to read those books first if you haven't already (titled FAST and HAYWIRE.) As a result there is not a lot of focus on developing the main protagonists from the other books (however the villains are interesting, creepy and well written.) Even if you haven't read the earlier books in the series this is easy to enjoy as a stand alone novel, I had only previously read FAST years ago and didn't realize this was a sequel until I was halfway through it.
Fans of action based sci-fi will enjoy this one. If you're looking for something deep and philosophical to discuss with your book club this might not be the book for you. Please note this book does include some graphic depictions of violence so squeamish readers might want to look elsewhere.
Coleman & Co. find themselves defending an underwater scientific research facility from an old time friend, Bora, who plans to use it to launch a biological attack on the entire North American seaboard. If that’s not bad enough, the submerged siege is noticed by the locals, and they don’t like visitors.
As expected, through the author’s vivid descriptions, the facility itself is brought to life as a character in the story. The action never relinquishes from the very beginning except to sprinkle moments of sheer terror throughout.
I have now read all five of the author’s novels and I enjoyed them all, really enjoyed them. I even followed him in hopes of future releases. I can’t think of a much bigger compliment than that. Thanks a bunch!
