Derek Flint is a loner. He lives with his mother and spends his evenings watching his clients on the CCTV cameras he has installed inside their homes. He likes their companionship – even if it’s through a screen.
When a series of crimes hits Derek’s neighbourhood, DC Beth Mayes begins to suspect he’s involved. How does he know so much about the victims’ lives? Why won’t he let anyone into his office? And what is his mother hiding in that strange, lonely house?
As the crimes become more violent, Beth must race against the clock to find out who is behind the attacks. Will she uncover the truth in time? And is Derek more dangerous than even she has guessed?
As a writer of suspense thrillers I often ask myself what if? What if this happened instead of that? Or why a particular person reacted as they did. So often fact is stranger than fiction and these books start with a fact which I develop. You may be surprised to know, for example, just how many patients experience changes in their likes and dislikes after a transplant operation ~ The Darkness Within. Or how easy it is to look into someone’s home through their CCTV ~ Stalker.
Just a little bit about me. I live in England and have three children. I have always been a writer - from when I was at school, with poems and articles in the school magazine. In my teens I began writing short stories, a few radio plays and novels. I finally made it into the bestseller charts with Damaged in 2007 which I wrote under the pseudonym Cathy Glass. Since then I have had 28 books published, many of which have become international bestsellers.
Thank you for your time, I hope you enjoy the Lisa Stone thrillers.
Cathy Glass made a huge following when she wrote about her different experiences in being a Foster parent. Each child with a different story. I was one of her avid (and still am) followers.
When she jumped over to my next genre that I love to read I just had to seek it out. The first book was absolutely great.
This book I’ve just listened to on audio is amazingly creepy, suspect and very palpable with each chapter you get to.
I must say, the narrator chosen has done a splendid job. It was easy to sync between book and audio.
The thoughts of who we trust in our home from painters, decorators, plumbers to electricians who has not allowed a tradesperson in their home?
The thought of having a security system installed for your own safety and peace of mind should be straightforward right?
This creepy book made me want to go check all my cctv cameras! Stick tape over my laptop camera and work out how I could surf online incognito! What a fabulous plot this was.
Nothing was as it seemed, no one were who they were and you were kept alert right until the very end.
I can’t wait to start her next book.
This woman has pure natural talent which she must have been hiding under a bushel. I love both her genres.
If you love psychological thrillers, creepy, and keeps your attention, then this book could be for you.
Yikes! This one might have you putting some tape over your webcam. If it's not already there. Or maybe you'll start thinking a bit more about your home security...
Stalking has changed with the times. Now someone doesn't have to follow you to memorize your habits, note when you come and go. They need only to hack into something of yours online, and they can find out more than you'd think just from your social media presence. This isn't necessary for Derek Flint. He's professional and capable. He seems like a great choice to install security at your house. Bring everyone living there peace of mind, keep them safe. Oh, and log into the cameras and watch all of you from the privacy of his bedroom. That too.
Quite a few of his clients start to experience invasions and robberies, and he seems dismayed. He wants to watch them and protect them, not see them suffer. DC Beth Mayes isn't so sure. She quickly learns that he has a connection to many local crimes, and she senses something off about the secretive man with the reclusive mother. Rightly so, but is he responsible for more than spying?
Nice and creepy, quick read. It's a bit different than what I'm used to, focusing more on the technology you can use to watch someone. It was alarming in a whole different way. Some parts were a bit predictable, but there were aspects of the ending that definitely threw me for a loop. I worried this book would be full of tech talk that was beyond me, but it's definitely not. Derek isn't a master hacker by any means. He simply takes advantage of the trust people place in him. It makes everything easy to understand and get into. Lisa Stone is an author I'd be happy to read again.
I received a copy of this book from Net Galley and Avon Books, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.
After reading this book, I eyeballed my computer very, very carefully.
Derek Flint sells and installs computer security systems. Then he goes home, and watches from afar. He has their passwords, so it's no problem for him to log in, and watch what's going on. These homes are like the family he doesn't have. He feels it's his responsibility to look out after all of them.....
Like the woman cheating on her husband. Derek sends an auto-message to her husband and he rushes home to find his wife dallying with another man. He then assaults his wife leaving her with severe head injuries....
Like the young babysitter in one home, who ignores a child's cry because she's involved with her boyfriend. Another text message is sent to the parents of the crying child. When they arrive home, clothes have been straightened, whiskey glasses washed and put away. However, when the camera is rolled back, everything is revealed...
(Book Blurb) When a series of crimes hits Derek’s neighborhood, DC Beth Mayes begins to suspect he’s involved. How does he know so much about the victims’ lives? Why won’t he let anyone into his office? And what is his mother hiding in that strange, lonely house?
Is Derek the stalker? Or is he the one being stalked? Is he responsible for all the break ins, all the crimes? Or is her being set up to take the fall?
This is an outstanding book. Characters are finely drawn and take part in an original story premise. The ending was absolute perfection. This book should make everyone be much more careful when it comes to their computers.
Many thanks to the author / Avon Books UK / Netgalley / Edelweiss for the advanced digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
If you want to read a book that will set your heart racing then this is the book for you. Forget Frankenstein, vampires and things that go bump in the night for me it's more the real fears that could happen like being stalked, murdered or being watched which I find really creepy.
Derek Flint has no friends and has always lived at home with his elderly mother. Every day he goes to work at the business he runs installing home security but only for the customers he approves of and wishes to help. Derek arrives home each night and prefers to spend his time shut away in his bedroom with his computers and many monitors rather than spend time with his lonely mother whose only company is the television programs she watches all day. Two lonely people living together but leading separate lives with only a screen for company but just who is watching who?
This has to be one of the most scary stories that I have ever listened to in a long time. I listened to the audiobook version of this story which was wonderfully narrated and had me listening into the early hours of the morning. Very highly recommended.
Two words I can use to describe it: Predictable. Boring.
A lot of computer "tech talk" which basically sends me into a coma.
I knew the "who" from the very beginning. Like, seriously, within the first few chapters. I read to 48% and then skimmed to the end to see if I was correct and I was. I have really shitty detective skills so that should tell you just how simple this story is. No one is more disappointed than me to say that.
Thanks to Edelweiss and Avon Books for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I have never read anything written by Lisa Stone before so I was delighted to read this in exchange for a review on netgalley.
They say you should never judge a book by its cover, I have discovered the same about titles, the “Stalker” led me to believe it would be about somebody following someone around, so I was pleasantly surprised that it was more technical than that. Derek flint a loner who lives at home with his mother, runs a security business installing alarms and CCTV actually watches his clients from the comfort of his own bedroom!
From the start I was undecided about Derek Flint’s character and motive as at times I felt sorry for this loner, at other times he seemed very creepy and secretive. I really wanted him to be innocent!!
I would definitely read another of Lisa Stone’s books.
I admit, with the title 'Stalker', this was not what I was actually expecting. That being said, the technological aspect suited me to a T - I love a good technothriller! We all usually assume that stalking means following by physical means but it can be through a computer, with all of the technological advances we have made. like it is here.
So, now we have established that this is cyber stalking, lets talk about everything else. The style and pace of writing is good, character devlopment is also done well - you actually sympathise with Derek Flint and his situation. This is a classic case of 'just because you're a loner, doesn't mean you're a criminal'.
I enjoyed all of the elements of this title and would recommend it to those who appreciate technology based/high tech thrillers. My only slight gripe is that some of it was a little predictable. I do intend to try some of Lisa Stone's other books in the future.
I would like to thank Lisa Stone, Avon Books UK and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Stalker by Lisa Stone, an addictive read. Once the story got going I couldn't put it down. An original story with some dark and disturbing themes.... really enjoyed it.
It is the story of a sad, lonely man called Derek Flint. He is in his 40's, lives at home with his mum and has no friends. He runs a home security company, he installs the systems and then watches his customers at home. When a spate of crimes occur involving his customers homes The police start to suspect that Derek has something to do with them.
Thanks to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest opinions
Derek Flint is a loner, a forty-one-year-old man still living with his mother, a computer geek. "He had to admit he often felt more relaxed and in tune with computers than he did with people. You knew where you stood with them."
He runs a home security business, then at night in the privacy of his bedroom, he keeps an eye on his clients, who he thinks of as his online family.
But when bad things start happening to his clients, the police start connecting the dots, realizing that the one thing they all have in common is Derek's home security business.
But someone is hacking Derek, someone who rattles him by claiming he is watching him.
Having recently been hacked, this thriller scared me to death! And the fact that these kind of things are actually going on in the world wide web and are not just fiction. Change those passwords! Cover those webcams! Be careful who you trust!
I received an arc of this new thriller from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review. Many thanks!
For anyone who isn’t aware by now the wonderful Cathy Glass, who writes the heartbreaking true stories of her time as a foster carer, now also writes under the pen name Lisa Stone. I have to say having now read both of her books in the psychological thrillers genre, she is really making a name for herself and proves that she writes just as well in fiction.
As soon as we meet Derek, we know that something isn’t quite right. Someone offering and fitting home security services, you would expect them to be someone you can trust. When all becomes clear of what he gets up to, I was shocked and horrified. If anything it puts me off ever having security cameras in the home!
In a way I did feel quite sorry for him at times as he still lives with an over bearing mother who certainly wears the trousers in their home and constantly nags and chastises him.
The story flicks between Derek and Beth who is looking into numerous break ins in the area. Like her I was quite baffled how homes and businesses that had just spent money on upgrading or getting brand new security systems were then still getting broke into.
The story gets darker and more gripping the further we get into it until its very much a race against time to solve it. I was pretty much on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it was all going to end and I wasn’t disappointed.
Stalker is a page turner of a read that had me hooked through out. In fact I read it in one afternoon as I didn’t want to put it down. Another great read from the new queen of psychological thrillers.
My thanks to Avon and Netgalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
I always enjoy stories that focuses on every day items that could turn into a negative impact on someone’s life.
This crime novel takes the basic premise of various people installing a CCTV security system in their homes, whilst unbeknown to them loner Derek Flint spies on he’s clients once the system is operational.
Derek still living at home with he’s mother is a fascinating complex character that is so well written. Even though a spate of serious crimes that seem to link him as the perpetrator, I was instantly sympathetic towards him.
This instantly creepy fast moving story is easily enjoyable for both the tech savvy or technophobe reader. The strength of the storytelling kept me hooked. A fascinating simple concept, I could put this book down!
I’ve come to the conclusion that sometimes the most realistic scenarios are the scariest to read about. Especially when it involves modern technology we all just take for granted. Maybe there’s something to be said about living like a hermit in the middle of nowhere, off the grid, offline and unplugged.
You’d think you’re keeping yourself and your family safe when you install an alarm system and camera’s, don’t you? Derek Flint runs a home security firm and he takes the safety of his clients very seriously. A bit too seriously, in a horribly creepy sort of way. When a series of crimes hits the neighbourhood and it turns out the home owners all had their security system installed by Derek, police quickly zero in on him.
Derek is the obvious choice for a suspect. He’s a loner, has no friends, lives with his mother and has a few quirky tendencies. With a vast source of knowledge about his clients at his fingertips, is he the person the police is looking for?
Stalker had me hooked from the very first page. It’s suspenseful, compelling and incredibly gripping. I had an inkling as to what was happening but the truth is far more sinister and terrifying than I ever expected. A stalker doesn’t necessarily have to follow you home, stand across the street watching your house or having a peek inside your bedroom window. Not in this day and age. Things have evolved and not all of them for the good.
Lisa Stone has taken a modern, realistic concept and turned it into a dark, disturbing and utterly chilling psychological thriller. One which will undoubtedly pop up into my head every time I pass a CCTV camera and I may never feel safe again. 😄
This was my first time reading a book by Lisa Stone but it most certainly won’t be my last. Cleverly plotted, tense and addictive. If you enjoy your psychological thrillers, this one is for you.
This is second book of Lisa Stone I have read and I thought this book was so much better than the previous one. I really enjoyed this book I will look out for more books of this author in the future. We meet Derek Flint who is a loner, that lives with his mother. He also owns Home Security Services which installs CCTV security systems. Derek is very serious about his job and takes pride in what he does. You can say he takes his work home with him. He logs into the cameras at home on his PC and watches his ‘family’ so nothing untoward happens to them. But, then some of his clients are victims of crime and the police thinks he did it, DC Beth Mayes is leading the investigation to find out what is actually going on. I really enjoyed this story it gripped me from the start. This is an un-putdown-able thriller which flowed easily and I liked the author’s style of writing. Even though Derek was a bit creepy, watching his clients. You kind of felt sorry for him, as he was oblivious to what he was actually doing. Thank you NetGalley and Avon books for an ARC of this book for an honest review.
I was supposed to be busy – too busy to read this book, but it would not let me go. Just another page, another chapter … oops, book read and no work done. The story was enthralling – literally enthralling! It has been quite a while since I was this obsessed with getting to the end of a book. I can’t put my finger on it – the story-line is good: serial (seemingly unconnected) crime events in a small town; realistic police procedures leading to initial incorrect assumptions of guilt; more focussed police work – nothing so far really out of the ordinary. But then comes the central character, Derek Flint. One of life’s great losers and forgotten men. He fits the profile of many a serial killer / psychopath – no friends, lives with his embittered mother, sits in front of a computer all night … in short, not someone you would ever feel sympathy for – or even remember if you met him. In your first introduction to him, you have him pegged as the evil perpetrator – and just wonder how long the police will take to bring him to justice. Derek runs a moderately successful Home Security company – by himself, with an occasional poorly paid apprentice – and knows the potential flaws of his clients’ security issues inside out. Who better to plan robberies and arrange abductions? It is all so obvious, that you know (as a seasoned reader of crime novels) you must have the wrong end of the stick. Derek is conscientious, polite, always punctual (clearly a sociopath!) – but actually, genuinely cares about the welfare of his clients, and does everything he possibly can to keep them safe. And that is where he starts to get a bit creepy. He sees his clients as part of his family, and spends every evening with them all, watching their every move, listening to them talk … via the security cameras and microphones that he has installed in their homes and businesses. Deep down, he knows what he is doing is wrong, but he justifies it as giving each client that added extra protection that only 24-hour surveillance can bring. And in this current crime wave, that is definitely what they need. However, Derek’s warning emails and texts don’t just stick to crimes against property, he also flexes his moral compass – with some quite unforeseen consequences. I really liked the character of Derek, and so much wanted him to come clean to the police, and to his clients – before it was too late. He appears more and more to be one of the (really) good guys, but there is always a sneaking suspicion, that the stress he is put under will drive him to the dark side. Some of the twists you can see coming – but that in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the book. Other twists are clean out of the blue. It is very difficult to review this book in a way that will bring it all the readers that it so deserves. But you just need to start it – and the book will take over from then. I can recommend this book very, very highly. I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
‘Stalker’ by Lisa Stone published by Avon Books and out now
Hey, there has been an explosion of books this year re Stalking, a lot of books have the word in their blurb or have a character who is involved in it or being the victim of it and its a popular subject to write ( and read ) about.....I wondered then when I saw this book with its no ‘compromise on the subject title’ ( Stalker means stalker doesnt it and thats that, no room to manoeuvre on that title ) just what new aspect it could bring..... Derek Flint lives with his over bearing Mum and he runs a successful security firm...he installs CCTV into peoples homes and business’s and is the epitome of a good solid business man.....or so it seems.....what he actually does is set the CCTV so he can access it 24/7 and so he spends all his free time in his bedroom watching ( and listening to) via banks of monitors, people who have his CCTV installed....he sees their lives at home and work and he LOVES it what more could a stalker want? Seriously? Its ideal and he never interferes in what he is privy to......well apart from the the odd security message saying the system has picked up a possible security breach sent to a husband whilst his wife is entertaining the plumber so the husband can access the cctv and see whats occurring......and that’s never going to harm......is it? I think you can see where the new angle on stalking goes to in this book and it makes for a fascinating read.....add to this a gang of truly nasty ‘dark web’ thrill game players who then hack Dereks systems and it all makea for a grim yet addictive read, its dark, intense, worryingly scary and will make you question everything you thought you knew about internet security....and make you shiver at the ease at which peoples desire to watch and stalk is so easy to achieve Fascinating read 10/10 5 stars
Meet derek who installs CCTV for a living. But he's not your average installer. He picks and chooses who gets it, he then watches the families from home. Sounds great, think a bit of us all would love to spy on someone in this way. He has some amazing set up at home watching many different families at once. But you just know life cannot go on like this. What happens if he gets caught? Will one of the families find out and come after him? You will have to read on and see. The storyline was great. It was very quick paced and kept my interest from the beginning. I lost interest in the last few chapters as i felt it dragged on a bit once Derek was with the lads from watching you. Felt a lot was not needed. So I skimmed the book at this bit. Shame because this was the only reason it lost a star.
STALKER was sick, creepy and engrossing story. Thankfully it was not disgustingly violent and gruesome. But its one of those stories that will make you think and be more careful when it comes to your computers, passwords, security. Usually we expect that stalking means of being physically followed. Now that we are surrounded with technology, stalkers have easier access to people's private life and their homes. You can loose your privacy and you will never know what are the motivations behind stalker's behaviour.
I liked that the characters were solid and the storytelling kept me hooked from the beginning till the end. What starts off as a case of voyeurism turns into something more dangerous and darker, leading up to interesting ending.
Stalker is one of those few crime thrillers that will make you want to check up on yourself. While a horror may make you want to check underneath your bed or in the closet, Stalker will make you check and recheck your online security and change your passwords.
A great read, a stalker who watches your every move through cameras that he has installed in your house to keep you safe, it's certainly believable and with the technology advancing at such a pace I suppose it could happen. Derek was a bit of a sad individual with no real friends, he lived with his mother but they didn't get on, his only pleasure was watching the screens in his bedroom, but when events turn sinister Derek is under suspicion of more than just watching.
"Security cameras are supposed to keep us safe, aren't they?"
A brilliant story that definitely makes you think twice about installing security cameras around your home, and internet safety. You forget how easy it is for people to hack into your security systems and how much they can learn just by watching you. I was hooked from the start of this one, and I loved the plot. My only issue was that the ending seemed a little anti-clamactic and a little rushed. I've got loads of this authors books on my bookshelf so I look forward to the next one.
STALKER is a very creepy and eerie read, that felt a little too like a reality at times.
When you think of stalking people you think of being followed. Well in this book we get a whole new look into the dark world of Stalking via technology. But not just any technology..... people's home security systems.
Ok so your probably thinking yeah that's right some security teams watch cameras. But not Derek Flint!! He entrusted his community with his security cameras in their homes. Then watched their every move from his house. Brrrr creepy right!!
Well it only comes to light when there is a spat of break ins. He believes he is keeping his community safe! But is he??
Is there a deeper connection to what is happening? Is Derek responsible? It's the job of DC Mayes to find out just what Derek's motives are!
Derek was a strange character for me. On one hand I actually felt kind of sorry for him. With no friends it's almost like he uses the cameras as his friends. Which is actually bloomin creepy. Especially as the people he watches are unsuspecting. So I did have mixed feelings. But I do believe the reader is meant to feel like that about him.
Lisa has done a great job at bringing the term stalking into the current. Technology really has become like big brother is watching you. We just don't expect it to be from someone's bedroom. Lisa creates the perfect amount of suspense and eerie atmosphere. At times the plot was a little predictable but I did like that there was a few lil twists.
I really do recommend this creepy book if you enjoy technology thrillers mixed with crime fiction. I'm looking forward to reading more from Lisa.
Thank you to Avon books for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Derek Flint has high professional standards, which would be considered a great asset for someone who installs CCTV security systems. His courteous and prompt service differs vastly from his competitors. Sadly, so does his moral compass.
With cringe-worthy contentment Derek dutifully ‘looks out’ for the well-being of his customers by viewing them on their brand new cameras. The problem is that’s not a service they signed up for.
His behaviour is creepily unacceptable and there is no justification for him to take advantage of the people who gave him their trust, especially as his voyeuristic opportunities have escalating consequences for all concerned.
I found myself strangely absorbed by Stalker as it delivers a socially rejected oddball and many reasons to test my judgement of the characters throughout. It also got me thinking about the times we may need to invite a specialist into our home who is way more tech savvy and knowledgeable than ourselves, and how vulnerable we are as a result.
Although the plot itself wasn’t overly complex it was a compulsive and quick read nonetheless.
(I’m grateful to have received a digital copy of this title from the publisher via Netgalley, which I voluntarily chose to read and review.)
Than you to Negallery and the author for a copy of this book. I was excited about this story and the idea that someone was watching through your cctv system, a really creepy thriller. I was disappointed. By the 50% mark it was becoming quite a chore to read. The ‘twist’ is completely transparent and there is chapter after chapter filled with unnecessary packing. Completely forgettable I’m afraid 😟
Cathy Glass writing as Lisa Stone. If I could give this more than 5 stars I definitely would. I was hooked from the beginning. A completely gripping thriller which I found difficult to put down. Highly recommend. #NetGalley #Stalker
My first Lisa Stone book, and Im already in love with her writings. Stalker is a page turner that had me hooked throughout. Usually, a slow burn book with a technology aspect will put me straight to a coma. Surprisingly, i love this one 🤣
I’ve always been a HUGE fan of Cathy glass and can say I’ve proudly read every single novel of hers sometimes even twice they are that addictive and fabulous! You can obviously imagine my excitement when I realised Cathy glass was releasing thriller fictions under the pseudonym Lisa stone and I had to get down to water stones immediately to buy her latest books- Stalker and the darkness within, I decided to start on stalker and I was not disappointed I was hooked immediately which I’d expect no less from Lisa stones books! The thought of being watched in my home unaware when I believe I am safe and have privacy makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck- I confess that it even made me check the webcam on my Mac book that sits in my bedroom, Derek is a middle aged loner who lives with his controlling mother, he runs his own cctv business and is actually very professional at his job so much so he has built up a good client base, he has installed cctv systems in their homes which they are very happy and impressed with and feel much more safe, however they are unaware that their cctv systems are hooked up to dereks system at home and he can watch them whenever he pleases which he does every evening, he believes he’s looking out for these people and their families and feels it is somewhat of a companionship watching their lives unfold before his eyes, when break ins and sinister crimes hit dereks neighbourhood DC Beth Mayes who is in charge of the investigations becomes suspicious of Derek- how does he know so much and is he involved in the crimes?? She is determined to uncover the truth of what Derek has been up to and who he really is...
I love the way Lisa stone writes her books, she knows how to immediately draw her readers in and keeps you engaged, I found myself eager to finish any tasks so I could get back and read more, I also love the very detailed descriptions of every scene in her book it makes you feel you are there in the room watching everything unfold before your eyes. Lisa also slowly builds the tension up until the final unexpected twist that leaves you flabbergasted. A fantastic gripping and additive plot and I’m looking forward to reading her other two books.
I liked Derek. He was quirky, reminded me a bit of myself minus the voyeuristic activity 😂 But although this wasn’t boring, it was pretty uneventful. There was no real twist in my opinion, and I felt like it was slow through to the halfway point and then everything started happening at once, not given enough time to be explained and then it ended.
Good but now great, could have been better because the premise was creepy.
Derek Flint is a middle-aged loner who lives at home with his Mother. By day, he installs top notch security systems for clients. By night, he watches those clients on monitors in his bedroom while eating reheated microwave dinners. When a number of his clients are the victims in a series of crimes, Derek doesn't think much of it - but when it continues, he begins to wonder if he's not the only one watching them. Is someone watching him?
I had no intention of sitting down to read this yesterday, I requested it from NetGalley as I liked the premise and I said I'd read the first chapter. I couldn't put it down, and tore through it in a couple of sittings. Derek is a great main character, the kind that you find yourself rooting for even though he has behaved questionably. I could see this working really well as a TV drama, and I'd recommend it for people who are sick of thrillers about The Girl In The Window/Train/Bus/Lake/Attic/Picture etc.
Thank you to the publisher for granting me access to an early digital galley via Netgalley.
